That man he killed wasn't just a soldier. He was a husband. A father. A son. A nephew. A brother. A human.

  • As a German, my great great grandpa was in World War I then my great grandpa was in World War II my great great grandpa left a message that my family still keeps safe he said “I couldn’t kill the innocent British soldier with a big hammer. I didn’t want to kill him, but then a German soldier told me.” “ smashes head with a fucking hammer.” “And so I did so because they threatened to kill anybody who didn’t obey the officers orders and he was an officer.” my great grandpa, who was in World War II said “ Today we have invaded Warsaw Poland and we successfully did it. We are planning to invade Denmark, Norway, Finland, and France to in the future.” and we still have those two messages from them to this day. Edit: and the reason why I put it in English is because not a lot of people speak German and I know how to translate stuff in English because I learned English Spanish and German. Well I knew German ever since I was born because I’m German but I just had to translate everything

  • One of the things that made this movie so incredibly devastating, at least in my opinion, is that we follow Paul through all this. He slowly deteriorates, sees everyone around him dying, he cant do anything about it, he feels somehow important to us, since we can relate to his reactions. And in the end, everything he saw, all the horrors of those useless massacres, we expect him to go home, think about it and tell the story. But no, the Stories he found, the man with a family he killed, all his friends wishes, all useless, all just as if it never happened, sinc ePaul just dies as well. And noone else knew I guess the movie wanted to show us, that all that was as inhumane as it gets, but no one gives a fuck about you, you dont count. This film, is a remarkable masterpiece

  • The more you read about WW1 the more horrific you realise it was, all the new weapons created and yet often it would come down to hand to hand combat. During the battle of passchendaele so many men and animals drowned in the muddy craters without even firing a shot. 35 Australian soldiers were killed for every metre of ground taken, just imagine that a whole platoon with lives whipped out for a metre.

It didn't matter whether, you were British, French, Italian, Russian, German, Ottoman or whatever country you came from, they at this point, probably thought, 'What was the point of all this?'
