Over 45,000 pocket knives are produced each day by Victorinox, Europe's largest knife manufacturer. The iconic Swiss Army knife has been around for nearly 130 years. It was originally created by Karl Elsener in 1891. We visited the flagship store in Geneva, Switzerland to look at some of the company's 400 different knife models.

    • I remember a documentary a few years back. They are still a family owned business not listed at any stock market. (They don't need to focus on paying dividends and their market rate.) Like some other companies in europe, they have apartment houses near the factory that allow for cheaper rents for the employees. And the heating of those houses is done by the waste heat of the factory. And when the sales went down after 9/11 and the (then new) security checks, they worked out a temporary contract with another company and assembled hairdryers for some time to not have to fire their workers.

  • I've had a Victorinox Hunter knife with me now for the best part of 15 years. It has served with me in three countries as an utterly indispensible aid in my work as a long distance driver. After all this time, with no additional sharpening or setting, the scissors are still sharp enough to cut my fingernails with. I am so impressed with this knife that has been through so much that I routinely purchase similar models for my friends. Even my wife has one! I hear that Victorinox will refurbish old knives in their factory, an option I may take as my knife starts to appear more worn out.

    • You poor soul. Cutting, slicing and chopping must be quite difficult using trash knives. Victorinox can’t make a blade to save their lives. It’s damn junk metal. I broke my Victorinox blade in two just trying to cut triple thick duct tape. I have a $40 set of butcher knives and a $5 hardware store pocket knife that work better than anything Victorinox could regurgitate. All edges maintained by an $18 set of 1000/6000 whetstones to the point of slicing loose leaf paper cleanly.

In theory a knife can have a sharper edge than a sword, since most swords are subject to much different harmonic vibrations and as such are tempered to lower hardness, usually around 47-55 HRC so as to retain flexibilty. Knives can be harder since they are subject to different harmonics and thus can afford more hardness. Many D2 steel knives are in the 58-60 HRC range if not above and stainless steel knives, by far the most common in kitchens are around as hard too. So in theory such knives have potential for higher sharpness than many swords due to higher hardness. So long

In almost half a Century, I've lost count of the repairs I've made to peoples things, from a delicate earring to a large campervan, and virtually everything else in between! When my friends young daughters were deemed responsible enough, I gave them a Mini Champ each, which they still have more than 23 years later, along with a Huntsman and the Victorinox Multi Tool. The girls were well equipped for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards courses. Victorinox SAK make fantastic gifts, along with a mini, high output LED light and an ultraloud mini whistle, all of which fit easily onto one's key chain, making them always available. Suffice to say, I love the Victorinox SAK range for their high quality practicality and affordability. The 29 people I have gifted SAK to have really appreciated them and still carry them daily!

  • Swiss army knives are great, but Victorinox also produces normal knives like steakknives, kitchenknives ect. The army knive is a perfect example of "good in all areas, but in none perfect". Of course a knife you can use for 100 different things is not as good, as a knive only made for cutting meat. That's why they also produce normal knives and i love them. Every knive i havr in my kitchen is from Victorinox. Some of the best chefs in the world use victorinox knives. If they don't cut anymore well, you can send them in for service and they will grind them for you. There are even little cheap kitchen knives for 15-20 dollars and i use some of them since 10 years. They still cut. Awesome brand

  • Having owned several of these in my life I had largely forgotten about them and decided I needed to add one back into my gear options. Was trying to find the right one and for 39 bucks complete with its own pouch I found a huntsman. Really it’s about as big as a knife for everyday should be. It’s got the right features for most things you’ll want to have on hand, and it fits with everyday life. I’m not a huge fan of the red scales cause I wanted camouflage but it saved me 10 bucks so I can deal with it. I honestly think knives like the Swiss champ are pushing the envelope for practical purposes but since folks will buy them. I’m probably going to buy the large sized Hercules next for a fishing trip I’m taking as I will take the huntsman but I want something a bit beefier on hand too

  • I got my first swiss army knife as a preteen, now I'm 38 and I'm looking at it right now. It was looking pretty rough in the recent... decade... because some of the plastic had broken off, the blades were dull and it was really difficult to move the tools at all. And of course the spring in the scissors had long broken off. Turns out all of this was easy to fix at home. I ordered replacement parts on ebay for cheap, sharpened the blades, cleaned it, then oiled it. It's probably 25 years old now and it looks as good as new.
