Stephen Fry's Key to the City - Exploring the Mysteries of the City of London

2014 ж. 5 Шіл.

Stephen Fry discovers the hidden mysteries of the City of London, from the huge amount of cash in the Bank of England vaults to the terrors of Dead Man's Walk at the Old Bailey. The QI host tours the City of London, discovering the hidden mysteries of this rich and powerful square mile. Along the way, he visits the Bank of England's vaults, witnesses high drama at the London Metal Exchange as dealers buy and sell stocks, and experiences Dead Man's Walk at the Old Bailey, where many condemned criminals trod their final steps. Plus, as a recipient of the Freedom of the City of London, Stephen finds out just what privileges this gives him.

  • Its unbelievable, how he suits in every situation, in every room, he always has the right habitus, the right things to say, the right clothing. He is an absolute phenomenon. I love you. And i dont say that very often. I love you. Said it twice now. The first two times within years.

    • But at the same time they wouldn't film loads of footage of Stephen being out of place, and no one laughing at his jokes, and his trousers on backwards, or something. It's their job to make him look good, he's got an image to think about.

  • Stephen Fry is perhaps one of the greatest icons of Britain. He speaks with an eloquent manner that is refreshing to hear in this day and age when people choose to be illiterate and crass. I never thought I would miss these days of fine English mannerisms and well spoken gentlemen. Mr. Fry is actually not only of this style, but he brings to it a class that is rare. I loved the audiobooks of Harry Potter, as read by Jim Dale. I thought him to be the ultimate for Potter. Then I realized that Stephen Fry narrated for the European side, and I tried it out. After getting used to it, I found his version to be like hearing a completely new and different book series. To my amazement, it was brilliant and so very enjoyable that I now have two versions to listen to, both bringing equal joy. Anyways, I got carried away. I am appreciative of everything I have heard of Mr. Fry, and hope he lives a great length of life, so I can selfishly enjoy his work throughout my days. Oh yes, I must mention, he is outstanding as the part of “Gordon, Gordon” in the tv series Bones. Again, his presence made the show all that much more enjoyable for his involvement. I hope to meet him someday. It would be an honour. Warm regards from Canada, eh!

England had its own trading post in Westminster that was run by the Masons. The Vatican is the Anti-Christ, so if you love the fact the Queen has no authority here, then you love Satan's dominion as this is the heart of the banking and legal organizations around the world. This is the head of the beast that captures everyone and their property worldwide through their securities and legal minions of legal persons. The Queen on the other hand is the living representative of God on earth for her people, the living Christ. When the bible talks about be in the world, but not of the world, these are the two jurisdictions it is talking about. One is the living and the other the land of the lead (corps).

It's a matrix, a web of interlocking services and production. I salute the young man and all who do his job because it is challenging, if somewhat repetitive and boring. But I also took interest in the physician who sat next to Mr. Fry at the ceremonial dinner. As S.F. said in the narration, she volunteers her services in war zones. Apparently with all the class warriors here lamenting the financial sector the doctor's rubbing elbows with the cream of the City contaminates her. No it does not.

  • I admire the courtesy and politeness in these old rituals. While the modern age thinks there's no place for patience, kindness, etiquette and an honourable way of conducting oneself, the British say "We bow first, then you take a drink, wipe, we bow again and then pass the cup. And o, wait... don't forget to watch my back!" Seems very silly, but there's so much old fashioned truth in it. A sort of formalisation of common courtesy. While most are certainly undeserving of how 'good' you have to be in order to take part in something like that, it motivates those who want to be as 'good', to persevere. I imagine an old British man of business telling his employees to work harder, for one day they, too, can share the same cup with the Mayor of London. Unfortunately, I can also imagine how patronising it may sound to those with no appreciation of such ambitions. When you abandon honour and dismiss the authority of those who have gained it, you shall have no real authority yourself and shall leave a mediocre legacy.

I feel safe in saying that a great many people in the world have no idea how old London actually is. I realize many people think the observance of ancient customs is a waste of time and resources but I think it's what sets England (London specifically in this program) apart from many other countries. Never let go of that. Russia has had to go to a great deal of trouble to resurrect their history from before the Revolution in 1917. People should cherish and respect history and roots.

You're sense of humor is wonderfully representative of that often associated with the British. Do you prefer to be called British or English? Wish we had ready access to train travel here, but that's, unfortunately, a thing of the past in the USA (with the exception of parts of New England and the eastern seaboard). When I was in London, I often got goose bumps when I'd realize I was standing in a city so redolent with history. Fired my imagination, I can tell you. I was fortunate enough to have some history instructors who piqued my interest in the subject. I'm forever grateful to them. Our history here is so comparatively short that learning about English history (continental European history as well) has greatly enhanced my knowledge of that of the USA. Thank you for your wonderful comments! A return trip to London is at the top of my travel bucket list, no doubt about it.

    • ***** I have a "cousin-in-law" who would agree with your statement about Scotland. Her ancestral roots are in that particular country as are those of my darling stepmother. They've both made trips to Scotland and absolutely love the place and it's backstory, if you will. I spent only a few days in Glasgow and Edinburgh which only served to whet my appetite. My aforementioned cousin-in-law and I are planning a return trip as soon as her daughter finishes college. Interesting that you're in Australia! My stepmom visited there for a month and had a friend who eventually bought a home there where she wintered. Her friend's decision was fueled by having a daughter who's a university professor in Sydney. How did you come to live there and how do you like it? I envy your willingness to live in countries other than your own. While I realize that the shared language (for the most part) among England, Scotland and Australia facilitates your relocations, I still admire your chutzpah in making those moves. Thank you so much for clarifying the proper nomenclature regarding England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. I've always been a bit unsure about it and I don't like to offend as the result of ignorance. You're a treasure trove of the kind of historical information I truly enjoy. Such a shame that so many people find history boring even though, given the way it's usually taught, I can understand why. Thanks very much for taking the time to expand my horizons. The oldest annual tradition we have in my hometown of Louisville (established in 1796) is the Kentucky Derby dating from 1874 (the race is only three weeks from today). A very small portion of the original clubhouse still exists, but it's barely discernable amidst the expansive construction and, to coin a word, uglification which continues to pile up. In a historical sense, we're mere babies on the world stage.

It's your beating on government to allow all sorts of sundry fiscal behavior by foreign money, while passing on and raising the price of your services on to average folk, that's got all of you globally despised. I can PROVE how culpable in this even you are: Explain QE. Quanttitative Easing. Go on, explain it in a way anyone could understand it. You CAN'T. And that you can't is just one small demonstration of the smoke and mirrors the banking system plays with now while you plunder countries financially and take their political power to fight you. You're a disgusting bunch, and the whole world despises you.

    • @@drsch I know where money comes from, and it should not be allowed to be created by private institutions, nor should one be allowed to bet on the fall of nations through the formation of derivatives. The banking system is evil and directly responsible for the woes of the world. Research 'MONEY AS DEBT'. Look at 'The Secret of Oz' or 'The Money masters' by Bill Still. Or read 'The Creature of Jekyll island' about the formation of the Federal Reserve - ownd by the BoE, owned by The Rothschilds, the masters of the world we live in.

The English are famous for having no tadte and therfote having to sail around stealing everyone else's, which is why there's now a giant bicycle wheel on the Thames and a monstrous city skyline with the horrorific new buildings sticking out line bubiles on the face of a handsome man. • Well, opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one, doesn't mean you have to share it with everybody. But since you started, I'm only showing mine in response to yours. London has the most unique skyline of any city in the world, it's both modern and ancient, quirky and dignified. It's a testimony of the atmosphere that reigns at the foot of these awe-inspiring structures, one of multicultural invention and English tradition, of craziness and dignity, of history and fun. London is Britishness writ large, it is a true microcosm, the World in a nutshell, and yet it retains all the aspects that make it quintessentially English. I love this city, I don't mean just the City, but London as a whole. It is, as far as my own arsehole (sorry, opinion) is concerned, the single best city in the World.

But as someone with bipolar disorder, you learn to put on the act of being happy and upbeat even when you're not because otherwise everyone treats you as if you're a miserable bore and they hate you and wish you'd just kill yourself already instead of whining all the time. And since that's how you feel about yourself, you learn to just paint on a smile and laugh and make everyone around you laugh because it's slightly less painful that way.

The city of London not to be confused with greater London, have a king(not called king) who delegates to the major and its citizens have to swear OBEDIENCE to the major but only to be good and true to the queen. Sure they don't have their own passports like the knights of Malta do but that square mile is the shaker and baker in the British isle. The city is a tiny country with their own rulers and their own laws. They have power over life and death like no corporation has had after the USA revolution.

It is not accountable to Parliament or any of the democratic processes and even has its own unelected full-time lobbyist, the City Remembrancer (complete with wig, knee-breeches and embroidered gown) who sits permanently in the House of Commons. The Commons have no say in what the Remembrancer does. They might just as well keep a velociraptor running around on the premises.

    • The City of London Corporation is a one mile square block in London where the 110 Livery Companies operate from. The 110 Livery Companies represent every industry in the global market. Most major corporations today are connected with the Livery Companies through proxies or subsidiaries. Business at the City of London is mostly private and they conceal ownership through private contracts. The Knights Templar of London were headquartered at the inner temple of the City of London and today are the Order of the Garter headed by the British royal family and British Peerage. The City of London Corporation, Knights Templar, and Order of the Garter all use the same red cross as a symbol. The Knights Templar were merchants and bankers that held gold for pilgrims who traveled to Jerusalem and provided them with bank notes which were used at the Templar's merchant shops along the way. The Knights Templar established modern banking. London merchants have a monopoly on gold and silver which they use as leverage over the markets and monetary system. They also manipulate the price of gold and silver from London. This Templar merchant and banking system is rigged and functions like covert monopolies through hidden corporate conglomerates. Many universities, banks, and merchant companies are connected to the charters that were issued from the City of London Corporation. Some merchant and banking families that operate in London include the Grosvenor, Goldsmith, Rothschild, Montagu, Norman, Guinness, Sassoon, and Barclay families. Foreign members of the Order of the Garter include King Juan Carlos of Spain, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, King Harald V of Norway, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, and Emperor Akihito of Japan. They are members of the Order of the Garter because they covertly do business in London. The United States is a federal corporation defined under US code 3002 section 15 and is really a continuation of the Virginia Company. The Virginia Company was issued by the British Crown from the City of London Corporation for North American settlements. Former Governor of the Bank of England Baron Montagu Norman helped to established the Bank for International Settlements and worked with Nazi businessmen. They are using the Bank for International Settlements as a proxy to steal from corporate governments through foreign tax contracts like the Belgian Scheldt Dues. They then launder and conceal the wealth in private Swiss bank accounts. Washington DC was established as a municipal corporate state and headquarters of the United States through the 1871 District of Columbia Organic Act based on debts owed to foreign entities like the Hudson Bay Company, Irish Government, and Kingdom of Belgium. Prince Lorenz of Belgium works at Gutzwiller bank in Basel Switzerland right near the Bank for International Settlements and is overseeing the private accounts of the royal and noble families. The British HSBC Bank is international and operates in Switzerland.
