Question, on installing various apps on iPhone, how safe is this really? Is the iOS sandboxing truly bulletproof where the apps will only ever have the access we manually grant via Settings > Privacy&Security? And I've wondered what info ALL apps can pull by default regardless of iOS privacy settings? I'm eager to try out this Linux "vm" app. Just got me thinking about the question of iOS apps sandboxing in general. Thank you kind sir!!

iSH uses purely software emulated x86 Linux, while Termux is merely using Android's terminal. The latter is faster.
I'm fairly sure Termux runs an alpine container and it is not actually a shell running on your "base" android. Probably the same for iSH.
@@4nto418things like kernel and performance are passed down from android to termux, and with root you can run a local terminal, none in ish, pure software emulation
@@4nto418termux uses a chroot which is a rootfs that uses the already loaded kernel from android (because the android kernel is decently close to Linux mainline), the one on Android is faster because the chroot doesn't have to emulate anything, because android is so close to Linux, most of the work is being done your the app, when on iOS, it needs to do more work

Android is already a regular Linux distro
No it’s like saying iOS is already a regular Linux distro. We are to a point that it’s a completely different product
@@dontgoonmyprofile9028 According to Wikipedia, "A Linux distribution (often abbreviated as distro) is an operating system made from a software collection that includes the Linux kernel, and often a package management system." Android is technically a Linux distribution, but not a traditional one. And, for your example, "it’s like saying iOS is already a regular Linux distro" iOS isn't based on Linux, but it is based on Darwin is based on BSD. Please do your research.
@@dontgoonmyprofile9028It's closer to saying IOS is a regular BSD. Except it's more accurate to say that android is Linux than that IOS is still BSD because android is still open-source (even if Google play services and lots of other stuff that you usually need to have a functional smartphone isn't)
@@dontgoonmyprofile9028No becouse android uses linux kernel and ios don't

I dont need almost anything from your videos but they are so good that I watch all
This is awesome… I’ll definitely be checking it out for iPhone! What a cool way to learn on the go. Again, super cool video!
Looks like it's doing a VM of some sort, since uname shows i686 architecture.
Yup! iSH emulates an x86 processor in software. It’s due to some Apple App Store restrictions. Honestly I’m surprised Apple allows lets them be.
It is, but it's actually a bit more interesting. iSH implements an x86 emulator for code instructions, but reimplements the Linux kernel syscalls in native iOS code (which is much faster than emulating a real Linux kernel)
Ah, quite an ingenious way to do it-and more performant since some operations would be native that way. Thanks for that info!

I have Linux on my PC. (Linux Mint) I have Linux on a virtual machine. (Linux Mint) I have Linux on my phone. (Termux) I use an operating system based on Linux on my phone. (Android) I have a USB with Linux. (Linux Mint) I use a Linux subsystem for Windows.
@blob6591Android is based on the Linux kernel. It's essentially running a modified Linux kernel.
iSH is just a shell, which means you aren’t looking at the files in the iPhone. It is a “shell” that is running on top of your iOS. You get the standard Linux commands therefore can do descent utility.
What does termux do then, i can go to the root of the system but nit really do anything because of premissions. What does termux differently?
I think that Apple restricts what files regular apps can see. What you see here is a Linux file system that exists only within the app. It’s for learning, not for actually manipulating files on your phone.
I remember back in 2014 this was ridiculous but nowadays it's a great way to learn bash on the go and play around the terminal. You can also make quick scripts in bash, sh, zsh, etc, or even in a platform independent language like python.
Using the CLI on a mobile device is painful, though.
Very resourceful, thanks.
Thanks Bombal❤
Android is based on the Linux kernel, which is used for the hardware part. A tutorial on installing Ubuntu on a Samsung smartphone would be interesting.

It's not really Linux. It's just an emulated shell. If try to actually execute or compile a program you wrote it will completely fail. Plus it does not have root access even if you jailbreak or root your device.
Also there’s many ssh apps for iPhone and android too.

On my jailbrocken iPhone I use NewTerm. It’s bash terminal running on the phone itself that has full access to the entire file system.

Android IS a Linux distro.

To be useful you would need to be able to access its device inputs and outputs. eg audio in and out, and storage. Would this Linux distro allow that? This would be a great way to repurpose old phones, eg with or without network access. audio capture and save for example. I have so many old phones.
How do i begin to learn this Magic? What is my entry point? I actively seek it!
Ish shell.... Do you need to install packages to run ping , whois ...etc or it comes prw loader ?
Good stuff

But it’s a terrible phone
Hey David , can you guide us about ish .
Alpine FTW💪
This is NOT the way to learn Linux. If you’re starting out with this, you’re gonna have one hell of a time figuring out why nothing works.
Of course you can run Linux on Android. Android is a Linux system. On the Iphone you're running an emulator, while on Android, you're just accessing the operating system like running cmd.exe on Windows.
Android is basically Linux... this dude is supermarket-level technical support.
Android is running Linux by default, you don't need application for that. IPhone can't run Linux unless you put some virtual machine in ios. what you can do with this apps is to use (GNU) userspace apps

And I'm Groot, i think.
Linux is underrated 😎
Does Apple still lock iPhone user's access to "their" network adapters behind a paywall? As a sys admin, that's one of the reasons I hated Apple. I couldn't even access my own network card to do scans at work, without a ridiculous paywall in the way. So, not only do I have to pay for the phone, but I also have to pay another couple hundred to access the hardware I just bought? Insidious... Androids are wide open. You can do pretty much whatever you want.
And anyone else aswell 😊
Question for you : is this why you cant see the dev mode option on say... an iphone 11 Ive had a variety of androids and to access dev mode is just a matter of sequential tapping and your able to access dev options. Appreciate the feedback👍
