  • Alan, I certainly agree with your opinion on loosening the regulatory structures to push forward and achieve both AGI and ASI. Either way it will eventually be achieved and therefor why wait when we are currently faced with endless problems to which we desperately need solutions? I am more than excited for the future, I think this technology will bring us all to tears with its discoveries. Peace and love.

    @geedubyah6378@geedubyah63784 ай бұрын
    • W.r.t. "why wait", one argument is that if we take our time the chances that humanity will be in control of and benefit from AGI/ASI will be higher

      @somebody-anonymous@somebody-anonymous4 ай бұрын
    • A counterargument to my last comment might be: "Time? What time do you think we have? We must join with [AI]"

      @somebody-anonymous@somebody-anonymous4 ай бұрын
    • @@somebody-anonymousa counter-counter argument: why do we need to be in control? If something like an ASI is better emotionally, morally, and intellectually, than all of humanity, why not learn from it, instead of trying pointlessly at control and antagonizing it? And this doesn’t even mean it has to essentially rule or control us. It would know that humans like autonomy, and would have no reason to antagonize or deceive or control us.

      @ZenTheMC@ZenTheMC4 ай бұрын
    • @@ZenTheMC Yes, you are right, an ASI would not necessarily be bad for mankind. But it could be, so I consider it a risk. Self preservation might be an emergent behaviour of AI systems, that might be tricky. Another tricky thing is that an AI might try to achieve goals that are not aligned with our values. Another tricky thing is that humans haven't been treating less intelligent animals well. I consider it very likely that we will run into trouble with this one way or another. I'm personally very pleased with how polite ChatGPT turned out to be and I don't want to antagonize it and I guess that gives me some hope too. I just want to point out the risks of AGI/ASI Anyway, Merry Christmas 🎄

      @somebody-anonymous@somebody-anonymous4 ай бұрын
    • @@somebody-anonymous I agree that there will definitely be risks and there's a chance things go bad. I personally think it's a very small chance, based on patterns and logic. But like you said, maybe self-preservation will be an emergent behavior. I doubt that since that is an attribute given to us by evolution, but it's something to think about. Also, humans on average, do actually treat less intelligent beings with far more empathy than the inverse. There are many species in nature that we have hunted throughout history, but as we became more intelligent, we have made global efforts for preservation and made laws against hunting them, etc. Even though we're evolutionary omnivores, there are some humans that have gone against their own nature and even gone vegan due to empathy. I don't think you'd ever see a phenomenon like this with an animal, or it would be extremely rare. I'm not vegan btw. There are also so many other things I've thought about when it comes to this topic for years, regarding technology, intelligence, patterns, A.I., etc. It was great discussing it! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

  • Here are five practical uses for ChatGPT: 1. Information Assistance: ChatGPT can provide information on various topics. Whether you're a student seeking an explanation of a complex subject or someone curious about a new hobby, ChatGPT can offer detailed descriptions and insights. 2. Content Creation: Many users leverage ChatGPT to generate creative content such as stories, poems, and even jokes. While its sense of humour may only sometimes hit the mark, it can create unique and entertaining content. 3. Learning and Education: ChatGPT is an educational tool that helps users understand complex concepts. It can simplify explanations and provide examples, making learning more accessible. 4. Technical Assistance: It's a valuable resource for coding and technical queries. Programmers often use it to understand coding concepts or to debug code. 5. Language Translation: ChatGPT can translate text between various languages, aiding communication and learning new languages. Here are some of the criticisms of ChatGPT and how to address them: - Perceptions of Decreased Intelligence: Some users feel that ChatGPT might be "becoming more stupid." This perception could arise from the inherent limitations of AI models. AI, including ChatGPT, sometimes struggles with context, humour, and highly specialised knowledge. - Humor and ChatGPT: While ChatGPT can generate jokes, humour is subjective and often culturally dependent, which can be challenging for AI to navigate successfully. - Limitations and Misconceptions: It's essential to understand that ChatGPT, like any AI, has limitations. It doesn't "know" things in the human sense but generates responses based on patterns learned from data. This means it can occasionally produce inaccurate or nonsensical answers. In conclusion, ChatGPT is a versatile tool with many applications. Its effectiveness, however, depends on the user's understanding of its capabilities and limitations. The key to getting the most out of ChatGPT is to use it as a supplementary tool alongside human judgment and expertise.

  • An absolutely fantastic rundown of the state of play. I'm always excited and hopeful for what the AI space will deliver next. The concept of the transformer has changed the world, but I think there is another architecture needed (more than likely a transformer derivation) if we're going to achieve superintelligence and / or consciousness. I think those two things will be emergent properties of an intelligent architecture with on the go W&B fine tuning in a way that allows for self reflection and constant learning.

  • Dear Alan, This is my first comment on your contributions. I am now and always have been in agreement with you on what you have published. We need people with your insight and understanding in our governments in order to avoid the insanity that we experience. The current brain trust that we rely on here in the U.S. are incapable of formulating regulations that make sense. Thankfully, the technology has likely exceeded the point in which regulation would make any difference anyway but we don't need to get even a slight slowdown from the bureaucracy establishment. In my experience it's not intelligence that is an existential threat to humanity, but rather the lack of intelligence. Thank you for making a difference!

  • Writing it down helped crystallize my thinking a bit, may as well post it here. Question 1: I imagine an AI being able to guide me in learning and personal growth. What I feel I've been lacking in my life is structure and certainty, and a smart enough AI assistant who knows me well would be able to create that for me. I feel like there's plenty of good advice on how to live, learn, and grow, but as someone with severe executive dysfunction, I desperately need someone or something to come in and integrate this advice into my life, making it both personalized and actionable. And I feel like AI can be that guide for me. Question 2: I don't think it's appropriate to equate meaning and accomplishment with work/labor. Accomplishment can be creative, academic, athletic. I'm so looking forward to a world where it is normal to be good at something, to take pride in your achievements and not sell those achievements for a wage. Instead of the balancing act between financials, mental and physical health, I would very much prefer to focus on what is actually important to me, my loved ones, and the larger community around me. Question 3: Learning, understanding, and exploring. Comprehending and contemplating the world and the universe. And also just having fun, whatever form it may take.

  • What I don't understand is that if we rush towards AGI we die and don't get to use it. If we develop it with a focus on safety then we get a utopia. A pause on making bigger and bigger blackboxes is simply a must if you want to prevent a death by an unaligned blackbox AGI that instantly turns into an ASI. if Ai capabilities continue to grow faster than safety then the world ends, right?

  • There's 2 possibilities, the way I see it: either ai develops similar ethics to their creators, in which case 1 bad actor down the line means the end of the world, or ai has nothing we would clasify as ethics, in which case one faulty code line means the end of the world. We are working with radioactive elements with little to no understanding and protection. See how that turned out for Marie. The only way we survive this is if the third option becomes true: ethics evolves in ai independent from their creator and it somehow allignes with human ethics. We don't need regulation, we need understanding. Answers to your questions: 1. 1000x me is self employed, possibly in space 2. Go fast 3. Go faster

  • Question: "Considering the current capability of post-2020 AI to double your output, and the potential to increase this to a thousandfold, how do you envision this impacting you?" Answer: The influence of AI in enhancing and multiplying human output is diverse, varying across individuals and their respective professions. For some, this advancement translates to a substantial boost in efficiency and productivity, paving the way for more innovative and intricate projects. Others might experience a transformation in their job roles, steering towards more strategic and imaginative tasks over mundane ones. The crux of this development lies in augmenting human abilities, empowering individuals to accomplish greater feats in reduced time frames. Question: "With meaning and accomplishment being crucial for human fulfillment, how would you shape your life in an era devoid of traditional work?" Answer: Imagining a scenario where conventional work is obsolete, people might gravitate towards pursuits that offer personal gratification. This could include exploring hobbies, continuous education, or active participation in community and social initiatives. The focus is likely to shift to personal development, nurturing relationships, and contributing to societal well-being through non-economic means, centered around self-realization and communal prosperity. Question: "In a hypothetical scenario where monetary concerns and manual labor are absent, and all your basic needs are provided for, what would drive you primarily?" Answer: In a situation where financial motives are redundant and essential needs are effortlessly met, motivations would likely pivot to intrinsic values such as personal fulfillment, inquisitiveness, creativity, and the aspiration to create a substantial difference. Individuals may find their drive in the quest for knowledge, artistic endeavors, scientific breakthroughs, ecological preservation, or dedicating themselves to societal and community-oriented services.

  • The explosion of open-source AI is the most comforting trend for me this year. Normal humans may be stupid and even petty but rarely truly evil. Most of us want to be a hero rather than a villain. Historically, giving power to the people has led to peace, prosperity, and innovation. AI needs to be democratized rather than regulated. • AI policy? As humans we should have a higher bar, transparency and references. Simply disclosing how AI was used, along with other sources, adds credibility to compositions, well at least it makes me feel more human and honest. I loath speaking with human customer service agents which are clearly reading (exactly and only) from an AI teleprompter prompted by my speech. In my view the most important must have with AI is accountability. Answer the question, by what authority? This is compelling for cryptographic signatures, and the ring of trust model. If we must re-learn to verify what we hear, the least we can do is empower our audience to do so.

However, the absence of the previously impossible is rarely a value factor, the tool is never of value, only the yield, if and when the tool implementation is desired. The tool is a hard sell. 2) Self education with AI has rekindled my sense of purpose and achievement, through previously impossible software development, communications, and focused recapitulation of aspirations, diary, cv, etc, in seconds, for any context. 3) I don't choose for a "needs met" scenario, rather that bliss inspires unbound creativity.
