A lot of people will be asking “why are you doing a video on this sport when you said you wouldn’t?” Well … I’ve been watching a lot of French TV and films in French to brush up on my multi-linguistic skills. Been watching a lot of Pétanque games online and never realized that it’s incredibly popular in France. To be honest, it’s actually a really good sport to watch! Hence the video.
How many languages do you speak?
@@ratedpending if you ask me honestly, I don't speak any language fluently (not even English!)
Let me say this then: bonne chance avec le français!! Good luck with the French!!
i noticed that old guys are playing it all over the place in france
Hey I was thinking a video on how competitive sailing races work would be cool
Ninh explains why hes been missing 😭
Burnout, and KZhead doesn't pay like it used to. (Well, it never really did, but it used to pay more.)
@@cygil1 Nah hes doing another yt channel it's in his channels tab
And also he's done 143 videos on sports idk if he has run out of them or he just got bored 😅
He's been uploading to another channel called Ultimate Bucket list. kzhead.info/tools/HMVJvXh_HqAwJo9Fo7BSYQ.html Check it out he makes good content on there. He's taken tours of various stadiums, and gone to various tourist destinations.
@@ancient6676 That's what I said 😅
This pretty much sums up my Ninh Ly watching experience over the years: See a video in my notifications about a sport that I've never heard of Watch the entire thing, enjoying it immensely Spend the next few days obsessively watching matches of said sport Thank Ninh for his amazing and criminally underrated channel, and for introducing me to sports that I never would have heard of otherwise Thank you Ninh
Thank you so much, glad my videos inspire you to watch some of these sports!
As a french viewer, I can insure you it's pretty popular, especially on vacation during summer, and extremely popular in the south of france, because it was born there and almost every village has a "boulodrome" on which you can play a game. Even in villages up north in france you can still find a boulodrome. Pétanque is basically the unofficial french national sport.
I got hooked on the game in Southern Arizona in the high desert. There's a group of French ex-pats that play every Sunday.
4:09 God damn it, that was beautiful
Yes, that was literally the perfect carreau! Absolutely textbook.
I played this once at a local club. Have a set myself . Great pass time that takes practice.
Absolutely!
@@NinhLyUK One video of rules of Kho-Kho
Amazing! I’m a French teacher in the UK, this is a great video to show my students!
Awesome! Thank you!
this is the best garden game ever. It doesn't require great physical fitness, but it's a lot of fun. I bought the first set 10 years ago, prepared a field in the garden and it started. Whenever guests come, we play, have a barbecue and play. My parents who are older play. sometimes the neighbors come over and they also like to play something much better than bowling. It's worth trying - great entertainment for family and groups of friends.
This is awesome, memories of holidays abroad, we need a world championship or something in Blackpool tbh
Travel ... ah, I remember that. That's the thing we all used to do before the government ruined it all.
there is a petanque world championship
I love how you continuously upload Ninh Explains series during lockdown
I try dude!
Oh the irony now!
Great video! I love your channel! Please never stop making these sports videos! You make my day every time you post! 😊
I laughed so much when I saw the explanation of "FANNY". In the middle of a "formal" explanation of a game rules, knowing that one point of the rule is to kiss the arse of a girl named "Fanny" is hilarious ! It is sooooooo French ! I know, I'm one of them from the South of France. If I had had to explain the rule, I would not have dared saying it as it is more a "tradition" than a rule but coming from an English speaking person, I love it ! You made my day ! I had never thought of the picture. Now I'm going to make one and will use next time I fplay with my friends. Thanks for the great idea ! Lots of fun ahead
This looks more fun than bowls. Made me google where I can buy the boules in here. And dat music choice, the freaking national anthem!
Well spotted. And yes, it can be played anywhere that's flat so it's a lot more accessible. And thanks!
I've been loving the frequent uploads!
Thanks. I don't know if I can keep up the pace, but yeah.
Great video yet again! Merry Christmas from the US Ninh!
Thank you Dave, Happy Holidays to you! :)
Brilliant thank you about to play this in senior games with my students; think I’ll leave out the Fanny rule!
Yes, probably best to avoid that last part. Thanks!
mr ninh, watching my second clip of yours confirms what i wrote of the first viewing of yours that you do have a enjoyable talent in providing quality content.
Love your sport videos, probably the best explanations of the net, hopefully we'll one day see a video on Jugger(both "Juggers of the Wasteland" & Collegiate rules)
Thanks Kody. I'll consider it.
@@NinhLyUK omg, thank you!!! I only say add Jugger of Wasteland rules because the two rule sets can best be seen as JoW rules = Normal (American)Football, Collegiate = Flag/Tag (American)Football
Hi Ninh, next can you explain the rules of Marngrook?
He's already got a vid on Australian Rules Football (aka Marngrook) kzhead.info/sun/gNKvY5arb5yGrWg/bejne.html
I love La Marseillaise in the background!
Well spotted!
In Argentina old and retired people play this game, with the only variation in you must make the boules (bochas) roll, instead of throw it through the air. And you can play from any place of your half of the pitch
Yes.
Brilliant. I’m trying to get a Petanque club going in my home village and this is a great video to show them. Thanks you.
I'm trying to do the same as you Christine. Any way you can let me know your progress in relation to building the Piste? Projected size of Terrain, Materials used and overall cost. Thanks in advance.
I live in Scotland and we've got a petanque club nearby. Next time I see a game in process I'm going to shout 'FANNY' at the players and see what reaction I get.
You only do that if they lose without scoring a point. Then it's acceptable. If you do it at any other time, they might take umbrage to it.
@@NinhLyUK They most certainly will. "Ya fanny" is an often used insult up here, much more so than in England.
Superb video!
Great explanation .. thank you! Vive la France… 🎉🇫🇷
The name of the sport was derived from words in the provençal dialect meaning anchored foot. The inventor of the game was a bocce player who became arthritic. As a bocce required a run up to bowl, he created a new game where the boule was to be delivered with feet planted on the ground.
Yes, I believe so.
"Pétanque" comes from the southern France patois (occitan) : "PÈ" meaning "feet" and "TANCAR", verb meaning "stIck, fix". Meaning that both feet must remain still when playing.
That explains why it seems so similar to bocce. Great extra info my dude.
So it's identical to bocce with feet planted?
Bocce allows the player to take steps in the delivery. Pétanque requires the player to have both feet within a 0.5-meter diameter circle and part of both feet should remain in contact with the ground inside the circle.
Very fun to play, if you never tried it you should give it a try one day, its like one of those games you play with friends the weekend a beer in hand before the barbecue
Definitely a fun game to play on the beach!
I am terribly sad to say it, but you need a pastice not a beer to play la pétanque :p
I had no idea there was this many sports till this dude
Yep, I get that comment a lot!
Great video as always you are completely unique on youtube
Thanks Aiden. I try!
Great video!
Splendid video!
Thank you very much!

Hey Ninh, have you ever considered doing a video on why soccer teams always make jerseys that arent their team colours?
thank you for making this video and making it funny too
You are one of the best channels on KZhead I hope you continue on this and I learned new sports from you Is It possible to make video About The ( Road Tennis rule ) 🌹Thank you for your beautiful videos 👍
Thank you very much. I don't know about Road Tennis? Is that a sport?
Yes road tennis is a different type of tennis 🎾
Are you going to a video about nfl vs rugby soon?
I love all these rules videos, and I'm wondering when you'll complete the cue sports and do a video on Billiards (English Billiards)
I'll consider it, but it's a dying game that nobody really plays anymore.
@@NinhLyUK That's fair enough, it is a game I find really interesting though
Thanks to make so perfect video and let us know its rule, history, but i am thinking we must play it ourselves then can know the rules totally, now we just knew a little or rough about its rule. But i will watch your video always.
Catch as catch can!
Thanks for that, really good to teach petanque to non french friends :D
Can you please make a new video explaining the rules of Carrom? My kids would really like that. Thank you very much for all your sports rules explained videos.
Great suggestion!
Good on ya for getting another sports explanation video in.. Regarding the Fanny bit.. I’m glad you have to buy the winner or winning team drinks compared to butt kissing.. After all, being light a few bucks is hell of a lot more preferable than public humiliation!!
There's still villages in France that enforce that. They actually have a statue on hand just in case!
Yes in the south we do the butt kissing, but the most of the time it is on a mosaic so we do it's funny
Boy still cranking sport videos since I stopped watching. Good job, ninh!
Playing la marseillaise was the icing on the cake
Hi i think it would be cool if you explained Schwingen (swiss wrestling)
Hi Ninh! Not long ago I was introduced to the backyard game “Bottle Bash” (otherwise known as “Polish Horseshoes”) and I had a great time. I hope you would cover that soon, considering you have already covered cornhole, another backyard game
I've never heard of it?
@@NinhLyUK Link incoming to help you out
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_horseshoes Here ya go: Please keep in mind that distance between poles vary as this is a backyard leisure game.
Merry Christmas 🎉
And to you sir!
Just to make sure, three questions: 1) Does a dead boule leave the entire match? 2) What if the only side with boules left to throw, knocks the jack out of play? 3) If we score no points and we dont know of a lady called "Fanny" but do know of one called "Bottom"...what should we kiss?
Do a video about shooting and one about 2square/downball/handball
Lol, this comes out the day after the new Grand Tour special, which has this game in the first 10minutes of it.
I thought the episode was terrible. Tired, repetitive, predictable and we all know it's scripted, but it's scripted way too much that it's obviously fake. At least with the older Top Gear episodes, you had some semblance that this all actually happened. Amazon really need to cut their losses on this one.
@@NinhLyUK I didn’t think it was their best either but I still enjoyed it. I watch mostly for their sarcasm though. This episode was super scripted, but it feels more like it is meant to be like one of those cheesy movie-ish specials they used to do than one of their standard ones. The year of waiting and anticipation really didn’t help either.
I came here after seeing the Google doodle for this game. I've grown up only knowing Bocce, and Pentaque looks just as fun! I would love to throw down in this sport.
This is the game in the opening scene of the classic Dennis Rodman and Dane Cook action thriller "Simon Sez". Which itself was a sequel to the Movie "Double Team" starring JCVD and Dennis Rodman. I always knew it was called Boules but never even had a sniff of a clue of the other term/name Pétanque. Looks like you just taught an old dog a new trick Sir! Kudos!
I've never heard of that film, must look it up. And thanks!
@@NinhLyUK You're welcome. Hopefully ya like it. If ya ever need any possibly obscure movie info in future, I would be more than happy to help if I can. Again ... love the channel Sir!
Indonesia has similar game, but with much smaller arena and use much smaller resin ball which is like pinball. We call it keléréng. Malaysia also have the game, but I don't remember what's its name in Malaysia
Ah okay, thanks.
Ah Pétanque. It's the perfect game to play during summer evenings while getting a few drinks down waiting for dinner
Hey Ninh, do you think you'd ever start a video series on casino games?
I remember when the marshals from the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix played boule during the Red Flag of the race
rules of sls, street league skateboarding, would love to see that
I want to add thay Pétanque features in the wonderful video game Disco Elysium. The player character can pick up a ball off the ground, and his interior physical strength encourages him to throw it like a baseball. Should it succeed, the ball is violently (but superbly) thrown into the ocean. Little did the player know that the ball was actually a boule, and that he had just disrupted two elderly men's Pétanque game. He must now find a replacement. Funny thing is, should his strength fail, the protagonist's throw would be perfect in the context of Pétanque!
Nice vid
Thanks.
quick question about jkd is it both martial art style and philosophy and is it better and more effective than wing chun
That all depends on how you look at it. It also depends who's does their martial art better. You will find Wing Chun techniques in JKD, as Bruce Lee was trained in this at a young age. But the philosophy of "learn what is useful, discard what is useless" will be different for everyone.
@@NinhLyUK but bruce lee invented wing chun to overcome the weakness of wing chun what is was lacking jkd is the new and improved version of wing chun
Any chance you might cover Horseshoes? It’s similar to this or cornhole.

Can you do a video on Hooverball? (Even if its in weirdest sports part 4)
Im petty sure I had played this or something very similiar when I was a kid (Is a dane and had living in Denmark for most of my life so far) But I never understood how it is played until now
You probably did? It's surprisingly popular and the great thing is that you can play it anywhere that's flat.

Can you explain A7FL soon.
Hey could you do Irish Road Bowls?
What happens if you hit the jack with your boule and move it? People try to score close to the moved jack?
Will you end up covering Jugger in the future?
I actually learnt about this game actually from this cartoon called Oggy et les cafards (Oggy and the Cockroaches) which is popular in India. Heck I didn't even realise it was a French cartoon but damn the good old days, that cartoon was the most French thing ever.
Greetings, Ninh Ly. With the release of the anime Shakunetsu Kabaddi or Burning Kabaddi, I think it would be a great idea to make a video for it if you haven't already (the actual sport). Just thought I'd share my 2 ¢.

How many balls do you actually get per end and/or per player? Also, since it was played 2v2, what's the order and all that. I think this video could be extended quite a bit, since some of the essentials are missing to really start playing it.
It says so in the video at 0:32 mark. And they can throw in any order that they want. And I disagree - I covered most of the rules for anyone to start playing.
@@NinhLyUK Then i've mssed that srry. But still how does the order work. is it like every one by turn or 1v1 within the 2v2?
