As I'm prepping my fly box for this season, one of the species that come into my mind is the exclusive bull trout. These fish hold a pretty special spot in my heart because many of these big bull trout are tuck deep into the backcountry and finding these guy usually come along with experiencing the and finding that most beautiful area I've ever been to.
These trout as well as many other predatory fish like to sit in deep and slow water, which is why I tie a dumbbell eye version of the complex twist bugger in order for a fly to sink hook point up to minimize snag as well as sink faster than its cone head or bead counter part.
Tie these fly in White, Olive, Pink, or any colour of your choice, let it sink, and await that powerful tug.
Material list:
Any straight eye streamer hook of your choice (Preferably with a wide gap)
UV polar chenille (or any polar chenille)
Saddle hackle or shlappen
Marabou
Dumbell eye (I use medium for a size 2-6 hook, if you go bigger you should oversize your eye as well because sink rate is extremely crucial)

  • I like using popper hooks for this type of flies. It puts the eyes in direct line with the shank of the hook and still turns them over really well.

  • Include the hook make, size (from that we can then proceed with alternate hook) and thread in your material list. Organize the list in the order the materials are tied in.

    • Thank you for the feedback! I will edit the list soon and in future video. Originally I wanted to keep the material list basic with missing info to encourage people to experiment w colour, hook type, and maybe even material.
