Lyrics:
Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
He said that it was from when
The cars had smashed so hard
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Once there was this girl who
Wouldn't go and change with the girls in the change room
But when they finally made her
They saw birthmarks all over her body
She couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just been there
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
But both girl and boy were glad
Cause one kid had it worse than that
Cause then there was this boy whose
Parents made him come directly home right after school
And when they went to their church
They shook and lurched all over the church floor
He couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just gone there
On a Crash Test Dummies rabbit hole, man the 90's gave us real variety in music eh?
Welcome back. 😢
Yeah it really did. Music just isn’t the same and We didn’t realize how good we had it. It’s nice to go down memory lane and feel nostalgic though.
When the music is worth it, no matter how much time passes, people always come back here to hear it
It's that special, it really speaks on the human condition. The musicianship is very tasteful, I cry every time I listen to this song.
@@Matthew-qk1xi Wow 👏😃
More proof of just how great music was back in the '90s.
Last decade of organic art, now it's all scripted. And you only get in if you play by the rules. Piss.
Couldn't agree with you more. Though they stopped making music for me long ago, I still listen to "Top Forty" stations, and it's all songs by young women about how awful their ex-boyfriends are, or guys wailing about how they will die if a certain girl breaks up with them. @@larryfishbone4163

Not true at all

I'm a dude born in the late 90s who grew up in the 2000s and 2010s. Much of the music I first fell in love with were made in the 90s, but obviously I didn't experience the culture of the decade and its sound; I'm just a music snob. But I've never heard this song until I stumbled on this video by complete accident. I keep coming back to it, and it induces such a nostalgia and a sweet melancholy. There's something special about it; the relatability a lot of us share in the comments I think is a strong symptom of that.

This band was my savior when this song came out in 94. I was a sophomore and bullied for being different. I heard it and thought "You know, I'll wear my weirdness on my sleeve." and played it everyday as school was letting out. Still a fan of the band to this day.

God this music era is something beyond
You're correct in your observation. By the early 90's the music industry was desperate for new sounds, so they were willing to give a broader range of acts a chance at success. It was a wonderful time to be a teenager; so many various musical acts. I'm not sure it will ever happen again... industry has changed.

@@MerlynMusicman It just resonates so well to people, especially kids and teenagers, that they think don't fit in. Everyone has gone through something similar at one point.
MTV played it way too much. Now I can see that it was influenced by Pearl Jam: baritone vocals singing about mistreated kids.

To me this is a masterpiece. My reading: young people feeling insecure (1) something unexpectedly hurt their image and self worth (2) something they were born with hurt their image and self worth, so they deflect by hurting the image and self worth of (3) a person who believes differently than the herd. This is a poignant and good song.
To me it plays out like little kids telling each other stories and spreading rumors. At least that's what I got out of it from how it's worded. When we were little, there were always these weird and often times overly exaggerated stories that would circulate on the playground.
Some good points there!
The kid in the church awkwardly dancing while looking at his parents reminds me so much of me at that age 😂

I was a kid when my grandma died and i heard this song for the first time, and the last. The pain was unbearable, and this song to me tasted like pain, grief, tears, broken heart. True. The "formulas" they used in the 1980's had dried up, and so the record industry became more willing to spread a wide net for different acts as a means to find "the new sound." The music in the first half of the 90's was far more varied than the decade before or after the 90's. In fact, the music became more narrowed and formulaic even by the late 90's.

Such a gorgeous song, a certain melancholy that never ages, timeless.2019 take note.
I'd be honored if some 90s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by the CRASH TEST DUMMIES, Arms of Angel by SARAH MCLACHLAN, and Long December by the COUNTING CROWS on my YT channel in tribute to a couple of great 90s standards. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace out.
Este es un super clásico de los 90, tremenda canción.
A moment of silence for everyone who wasn’t alive in 1993 when this song was rocking! 🙏🏻 (I was 13🤦🏼♂️)
I feel like crying every time I listen to this song. Beautiful memories and sad memories at the same time. I miss so many things but they will never return to me.
I know that feeling. Nostalgia is such sweet sorrow💔
Miss something it's learning so i hope you can now go forward and enjoy life every day 🥳🥳🥳🥳👍💪✊✌ Music is like a Dolorean 😎
Keep the faith. They will return . Also they never left

Totally agree. Thankfully we have this time machine known as KZhead.
Growing older, some songs just make you understand how peaceful life can be❤️

I've always enjoyed the uniqueness of Brad's voice and the entire group's sound!
I just chanced upon this song. I mistakenly typed “mmmm” in my google search and this song appeared I think the universe wanted me to listen to this beautiful song
I heard this song when i was a kid, around the time my parents divorced, my best friends died 3 months later, 3 months after that my brother died. This song swims back through a massive sea of emotions. CTD, Thank you for giving us this song !
pain
I've found that certain songs are permanently ruined for me due to my listening to them at the time of tragic events in my life, thus connecting them to those events. Even 35+ years later, there are still certain songs that I can't listen to or they'll immediately bring me right back to those moments. Now for the past 10 years or so, I make a point to avoid all music after a death or tragedy and sometimes for months later.
@1979 - This music is tied to horrific memories for him, your comment just blows right over what he said.
Dang I’m sorry you went through that stay strong always!
so much loss, so sorry 😞
This is one of those “you just had to have been there” songs. The 90’s was such an amazing time for music.
Sorry to break it to you, but the 90's wasn't such an amazing time for music. We're there some great songs? Ofc. Overall, not a great decade.
@@danwilliams1920 Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgraden, Alice In Chains, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Portishead, Garbage, Depeche Mode, U2, Nirvana, Green Day, Bestie Boys, Metallica, Tool. Yeah none of them released anything good in the 90’s 🤷🏽♂️
