Lyrics:
Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
He said that it was from when
The cars had smashed so hard
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Once there was this girl who
Wouldn't go and change with the girls in the change room
But when they finally made her
They saw birthmarks all over her body
She couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just been there
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
But both girl and boy were glad
Cause one kid had it worse than that
Cause then there was this boy whose
Parents made him come directly home right after school
And when they went to their church
They shook and lurched all over the church floor
He couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just gone there

  • I'm a dude born in the late 90s who grew up in the 2000s and 2010s. Much of the music I first fell in love with were made in the 90s, but obviously I didn't experience the culture of the decade and its sound; I'm just a music snob. But I've never heard this song until I stumbled on this video by complete accident. I keep coming back to it, and it induces such a nostalgia and a sweet melancholy. There's something special about it; the relatability a lot of us share in the comments I think is a strong symptom of that.

My reading: young people feeling insecure (1) something unexpectedly hurt their image and self worth (2) something they were born with hurt their image and self worth, so they deflect by hurting the image and self worth of (3) a person who believes differently than the herd. This is a poignant and good song.

  • I was a kid when my grandma died and i heard this song for the first time, and the last. The pain was unbearable, and this song to me tasted like pain, grief, tears, broken heart. Never had the courage to listen to it anymore, till today. After 22 years. Cause I'm afraid my husband is sick and that I'm gonna lose him too. In the meantime, 4 years ago, I've lost my mum. No, I'm not ready, I'm scared, maybe it's something that can be cured, but what if? I don't know what brought me here after so many years, but here i am, facing the most traumatic loss i had as a kid, the pain of being bullied my entire life, my mom's death... Maybe this song is trying to tell me that this pain will not be in vain...i must believe that I'm struggling now to be happy in the end.

In the 90s life priorities didn't allow me to fully appreciate that era new talents and I may have heard this song on the radio, but didn't listen at it as it deserves. Nowdays, with youtube I'm catching up and discovering it and what a masterpiece it is. I can't stop to replay it again and again. Beside the kids stories, it is the music, the voices and harmonies and the rithmn that captivate me. Surely one of the best song I regret missing in the 90s. Who knows maybe I may had the opportunity to see them live back then. Too bad.

    • True. The "formulas" they used in the 1980's had dried up, and so the record industry became more willing to spread a wide net for different acts as a means to find "the new sound." The music in the first half of the 90's was far more varied than the decade before or after the 90's. In fact, the music became more narrowed and formulaic even by the late 90's.

  • Some Songs just makes me teary eyed without even trying. This takes me way back to the early 90's I remember when I first heard this song and it's timeless production Despite the lyrics not being complex, it's still a very beautiful song. it just takes me back to the good old days when I was young and happy. when Playing 16 bit games on an NTSC Tv set felt like the best thing in the world. Love from Nigeria.

Live acoustic with no digital editing. Peace out & stay safe in the '020s.

    • I've found that certain songs are permanently ruined for me due to my listening to them at the time of tragic events in my life, thus connecting them to those events. Even 35+ years later, there are still certain songs that I can't listen to or they'll immediately bring me right back to those moments. Now for the past 10 years or so, I make a point to avoid all music after a death or tragedy and sometimes for months later.
