Baby deer rescue and release

A deer doe abandoned one of her twin fawns, the fawn had injured leg and could not keep up with the mother.
I do not support keeping wild animals as a pets, but this was special situation. The baby deer was healed and released back to her real mother.
Update: The doe and two her fawns is still around, we seen them through the summer and the autumn.
Here is follow up video one year after release: • Baby deer a year after...
Here is few videos how she learn to drink milk and bathing:
• Bathing. Baby deer res...
• Learning to drink from...
I am thankful for every single person who liked, shared and left a comment. I didn't expect this story to become so popular. I am sure that any of us with a little bit of a conscience about our existence, with love for the nature and animals would do the same.

  • Selenium. The baby needed selenium. That means the mother does too. Goat kids, sheep lambs, and deer fawns are very similar in nutritional needs. The brace was the right thing to do, as was the bottle feeding. A mineral feeder filled with goat minerals or cattle minerals (goat is better) will bring the mother back and help her to birth healthier babies in the future.

  • I also raised a fawn. I found him passed out in 93° heat. I carried him for five minutes before he came to and realized I had him. He was less than a week old, with his mom killed by a car. I called the wildlife people, they told me they had no resources for him and to take him out to the forest and let him die. I told them I couldn't do that. They told me as long as I didn't confine him I could raise him. Which I did. That was almost two years ago. Last September, when rut began he took off. People in the valley had seen him with 10-15 does. That made me very proud. He has only come back once, last Jan. he brought a girlfriend over for a visit. Raising him was one of the greatest times of my life. I miss him... But I raised him to be a deer and I think I did good...

He can't keep a big wild animal at home, especially since he has so many animals at home that you could see from the video. He can just leave little deer, but he take her home and save her, and i know, that little deer live a nice life.

  • For everyone asking why he didn’t call wildlife rescue or a vet... I don’t know exactly where he is in the world but many places don’t have those readily available.. he obviously owns some type of farm and knows his way around with animals. The deer didn’t seem to have a pain reaction.. most likely this baby had a weak leg upon birth and just needed some time and help to get stronger.. he had the capability to do that on his own. I applaud him for using his resources to help this sweet baby.

    • Call the state DNR and ask for the biologist, not law enforcement. They won't help that much but the biologist probably will. If there is a nearby university with a wildlife department they could also help. Especially if the doe died during birthing. If you are in an area with CWD, they will want to see the doe. This is very important to keep the deer healthy.

      @roberts5482@roberts54824 жыл бұрын
    • Kat salem, I agree with your comment about why everyone asking why he didn't call a vet. Either way it doesn't matter because he nursed that baby fawn back to health , and returned to her natural mother . Instead of complaining in comments, people should be cheering on this guy , who helped it. I'm sure if he couldn't help it , then calling someone else in would of been his 2nd thought. And like you say kat, he looks like he lives way out in the wilderness 🙂

For the whole city, we have 5 veterinarians and they all deal with dogs / cats. In autumn, I strongly doubt that one of them could help a deer or any other wild animal.

  • These comments always frustrate me. People are too busy acting like internet lawyers and veterinarians and are like "THIS IS ILLEGAL AND YOU ARE HURTING THE ANIMALS". Shut up and go back under your rock. Guy found an abandoned and injured fawn, helped it, and released it. Laws vary by state, but you are absolutely allowed (in most places) to take a wild animal for a short period of time with the intent for recovery and release. I'm telling you this as someone who has worked with local shelters and vets for helping distressed and abandoned animals. I've fostered and released everything from cats and dogs to raccoons, chickens, deer, and birds. I only ever kept one, a raccoon, and got a license for it. So ya'll need to learn your facts before you start acting like some professional, because you only sound like professional internet idiots. Thank you for saving this little fawn and giving her another chance.

She had few options in the scenario: she could stay with the hurt baby and risk the lives of all three, she could take the baby with her, again risking all of their lives, or she could leave the baby. This option had the highest chance of survival for both the healthy baby and the mom. By leaving the hurt baby, she only lost one child. It’s not an easy choice, but it was the best one, vice all three of them potentially dying.

    • Susan Di Laudo Then you'll want to watch ENP videos, of Asian elephants that have been rescued out of severely abusive situations and taken to Elephant Nature Park, which is a sanctuary, safe, joyful and free. No more chains, no bullhooks, no riding, no work, no abuse, just healing, safety, respect, protection, swimming in the river, socializing, mudbaths, play, lots of eating, and an abundance of peace, joy and contentment. It's so safe and wonderful that there's been a baby-boom among the rescued females, of babies that have never known suffering or broken trust. The KZhead channel is called Elephant News. Talk about seriously wonderful work!! You'll share the joy!!

  • Back when I was a kid, my brother befriended an adolescent female deer. He named her Bo, and she'd come by to visit almost every day. We had a deer lick set up on our property where we could sit and watch the deer, but she always came closer to us than the others. When we moved a few miles away, she actually found us and kept coming. She'd had two or three fawn and was clearly the alpha female when she got her hind leg caught on our neughbor's fence. Luckily, my dad and brother were able to untangle her, bring her and her fawn onto our property, and call an animal hospital about what to do. Basically, we could feed and water her, but her healing was out of our hands. The leg fell off at some point, but the stump healed nicely. Even with just three legs, she was still the alpha female in the area. She'd even eat from our hands after we rehabbed her. Sadly, we don't live there anymore and I haven’t seen her in years.
