      @justgivemethetruth@justgivemethetruth3 жыл бұрын
    • @@justgivemethetruth It's not a lack of imagination. If you look at the reasons they rationalize how the world's socioeconomic issues/hierarchies are written in the Expanse, it's the most creative thing ever. Adding in fake fantasy elements to it doesn't make it more creative and saying they just magically solved world hunger/war/poverty and created some Federation where humans are close to as perfect as can be is even less imaginative IMO and Star Trek has a lot of creativity in it. These same problems that exist today and hundreds of years into the future exist for different reasons and it shows that it's likely a permanent issue with humanity as a whole and potentially other intelligent species who use war and violence to settle differences and to gain advantage on their opponents. The Expanse is largely more about paradigm shifts than it is about alien threat or space battles.

    • @@Wallyworld30 It really helps that Ty and Daniel are adapting their own story for the show. GOT was great while the show's writers had GRRM's books to work from, it went off the rails when they ran out of source material and had to wing it. I've read in interviews where Ty and Daniel have enjoyed the opportunity doing the adaptation as it allows them a chance to reimagine characters and plotlines in a way that works in a visual medium.

  • I was intrigued by the fact that, after opening a gate to other systems and going to new worlds, the story sort of reverted back to the whole Belters/Earthers political stuff, and the characters seemed to fold back into themselves, dealing with personal issues, their past, etc. Kept asking myself if this was how it played out in the books. Thanks for clearing that up!

    @psychonaut5921@psychonaut59213 жыл бұрын
    • Personally I really like that the story goes in this direction. Cibola Burn/season 4 gives a taste of what must be happening with the colonisation of the new worlds; but so many sci-fi stories have covered that ground of exploring alien worlds in the past. I think it's far more interesting to explore how the opening of the ring gates alters the already tense political situation of the Sol system and the lives of the characters who live there. Plus for the first three books/seasons that politics and intrigue was the bread and butter of the story and Cibola Burn establishes that the peace between the factions is shaky at best; it makes no sense to throw that to the wayside not properly resolved in favour of exploring the alien worlds. The books do eventually get to deal far more with the worlds beyond the ring gates though; I really hope the show gets to adapt that part of the story. I understand why some people who might have expected the story to do something different may be thrown off by this choice though; it's certainly proved a contentious season and I think part of that is down to some people expecting more stuff to do with the aliens and the rings. Although I will admit it also has some pacing issues, I think that some of the people who feel disappointed may enjoy it more if they re-watch now knowing what to expect

    • While I share the hope the story will continue, movies are too short to tell that storyline. If they did movie / tv show hybrid, that may work. What I mean by that is tv show for the smaller moments a character story arcs, while movies fir the big battles or action scenes. • How could you miss the part that it wasn't Phiiip who decided to bring Naomi along. Marco decided that and baited Naomi using Philip. It wasn't because she was trying to find him. It was because when her son called out to her for help after all those years, she couldn't abandon him again. And Marco did it just to satisfy his ego and have her as a trophy. And he could give less shit about how that makes Philip feel. Honestly those two characters are brilliantly done in the books.

    • @@BeCurieUs it’s horrific, but we don’t spend much time on earth apart from Amos/Clarissa/Anna. I found myself wanting to go back to Ilus or other planets like it to explore more about the ring builder killers. The belters turning into Jacobins with spaceships just felt pedestrian after the threat revealed in books 3 and 4. That’s not to say you don’t write the contents of books 5-6 (personally, I wish JSA Corey had condensed it into one longer book with about 20-25% less filler. You can address Inaros and set up Laconia for book 7 without so much fat.) It seems the correct sequence of events is off though because once you introduce the builder killers, you lower the stakes by going back to belt/planet grievances. I get that book 8 really ratchets things up with the PM killers (and I’d like book 7 more if 5-6 were condensed), but the show is suffering because the source material takes too long to get there. And I’m NEVER the guy that says source material needs to be written to cater to a potential or existing adaptation, but after the events of Cibola Burn, 5-7 is an utter slog in getting to the events of Tiamat’s Wrath.

In that, it just felt more violating but I can understand why people thought the pace of it wasn't as fulfilling. Hell, I think this season of the show didn't REALLY hit home how much earth is fucked. The TV keeps talking about millions dead. Put B on there folks and make us really feel it! Maybe that is the odd part about this season. It feels like more has happened then the show really let us feel about it? Maybe that is what I liked about the books, I could live more in those moments, I felt very connected to everything going on, I def didn't feel as connected to this season. Like I didn't care about Drummers new Family at all, the choices there, I just didn't care. The book, maybe I felt that way a bit, too, but it hit a little more since we spend more time with them. • The reason Cas Anvar (Alex) isn't returning and had his character killed off is because of allegations of sexual misconduct, an internal investigation was ordered and a private investigator hired to look into the matter. A thing of note is that the allegations and subsequent investigation came after principal filming meaning that Alex's death was likely a change made after the conclusion of the investigation, however no official comment has been made on the topic by all parties involved.

    @wabba67@wabba673 жыл бұрын
    • Yeh, in the show they say something like "about 1.2 or 2 millions dead, much more expected". So it really confused me when this video and people in the comments talk about bilions of dead; and the wiki goes as far as to say that the planet is devastated, with most of humanity on earth killed. The pictures they show also look more like the equivalent of a large nuclear strike, similar to the martian nuke, rather than a world ending event. Really makes me wonder what they're going to do with that. The show paints a very different picture.

Or maybe more like One Punch, where every season is one more tier up the threat ladder. I mean, of course, that is how all long term things go, always gotta be raising the stakes. But some people are going to like different parts of that for different reasons. My friend always talked about how MOST people hate the later seasons of Buffy, but those are her favorite because they are a big, hot mess. Anyway, nothing to add per say, just had me thinking all day today about how and what it is I enjoy about the sci fi I consume :D

Alex has contributed so little as a character I honestly get surprised when we cut back to him, unmoved, still staring at the razorback screen, still waiting for something to happen. It’s a little ironic the show got worse with more money from Amazon. It’s not a bad show at all, per se.
