Fantastic Crosswind Landing at Madeira Airport. Storm Filomena was diverting planes to other airports and put many more on hold for the wind to be inside limits. The TAP Air Portugal Airbus A319 CS-TTS was inbound from Porto and was on hold until the ATC cleared the landing.
The crosswinds made the landing even more difficult, several pilots informed about windshear on final that made some planes to go around minutes later, but this TAP Captain managed very well all the conditions and landed safely on runway 05, after a nice battle with the wind!
Hope you like the video!

@@Thijs-Kuiken Because others did a go around under the same conditions following this one!
These pilots are true heroes. A few years ago, I was on an Aero Mexico flight into Chicago during a fierce rain storm with strong cross winds as we were touching the runway. The winds had been rocking the aircraft as we made the final approach, so it was a tense landing. As the landing gear touched the runway, the plane tilted sharply to the right because of water on the runway and a crosswind, but the pilot was prepared for it, and made a swift but accurate correction that leveled the plane's path as he reversed the engine power, bringing us safely to the gate. As I stepped off the airplane, the pilot was standing by the door to the cockpit, and I think I was the only one who thanked him for his skills and actions. It could have been messy if he hadn't been prepared for it.
Thanks a lot for your comment, nice story!! Thanks for watching my friend!

The plane wasn't even strait when the pilot put the right wheel down on the runway! Wow! Very impressive. Thank you.
That's the way to land in crosswinds, first you put one wheel, then align the plane for the full touchdown :) Thanks for watching!
Yeah, I agree. I hate when guys do that. Can the plane do it? Yes. Should you? Not if your a good Pilot. Let the plane point into the wind, i.e the left side here. As you get closer to the ground roll in some aileron for the cross wind. Then as you are about to touch down, straighten out with some right rudder, add more left aileron to stay laterally on the rwy. Check forward on the controls a bit as needed. Let the left main touch, pedal the plane with the rudder pedals to keep it straight, then as you decelerate, continue to roll on your left aileron to keep any gusts from lifting the wing as you decelerate. Doesent matter if its a 152 or a 787. Always the same. Fly the plane, dont let it fly you.
@@hillaryshields2032 WTF does that have to do with anything here?
@@FunkMasterJunk "I hate when the guys do that"....airliners like this aren't like c152s. If you 're a good pilot you follow the procedures,or you dont know what you 're talking about. These planes can land with the crab angle, this is standard for them. You might need to take a break and read their manual. They didn't let the plane fly them ,they just used one of the crosswind technique which is taught by the constructor. That was a textbook landing. However not all passengers actually enjoy this kind of touchdown so for their comfort i would personnally prefer to remove the crab when i can.
@@Hk-uw8my at no point did I say the plane couldn't do it. In fact, in my second sentence I said, "Can the plane do it? Yes." Why are they designed that way? Because they make a plane with the lowest common denominator in mind. The guy who comes right out of flight school and starts flying with an airline. Never having hand flown anything between a light twin and a narrow body jet. Never having flown off dirt strips in the summer and Ice rwy's in the winter or having flown floats and skis. All these guys know is coupled approaches and flying the last 200 feet of an approach. The "principles"of flying remain the same. From a 152 to wide body jet, as I described above. A good pilot who has hands and feet will straighten the plane out prior to touching down. Procedures or SOP's has nothing to do with that scenario. Good hands and feet is what it's all about.

Two weeks ago my Binter flight from Porto Santo was bobbing weaving loads before setting down. These pilots really know how to fly a plane.
Indeed, the Island hopers are amazing!
We honeymooned in Maderia nearly 40 years ago before this runway was extended, it’s the only flight I have ever been on where the pilot apologised for the landing before we started the approach, take-off was nearly as bad as he took the plane to the extreme end of the runway lined up and applied the brakes then wound the engines up until they screamed and the plane was shaking, then let it go, we were then catapulted down the short runway. Found this quite painful on both occasions as my wife is not a good flyer and gripped my arm so tightly, she drew blood threw my shirtsleeve both times.
That times things were very interesting, true pilots with nerves of steels! Thanks for your kind comment, a nice story :)

There is a reason why this airport is one of the 10 most dangerous airports to land. If a pilot can manage to land here with these conditions, they pretty much can land everywhere. Thanks god we have experienced pilots like this one.
Thanks a lot for watching, Madeira is not one of the most dangerous airport in the world, it is one of the most challenge. There's much much more airports with lots of crashes, Madeira last accident was more than 40 years ago, the runway was so small at that time, now is really big!
@@MadeiraAirport Well, some people see it as dangerous, some see it as challenging. Everyone's opinion is different. One thing is for sure, it is not the most easiest airport to land. A few days ago I spoke to a pilot and he said: "Once I tried to land there 3 times in a row and then I had to give up and go to Porto Santo" all because of the cross winds in that day. The difficulty here resides mainly in three factors: 1) The airport itself is a difficult place to land 2) Strong crosswind 3) The wind comes from the left, placing the aircraft in the lee side of the little mountain. You can expect turbulence from the descending wind hitting the ground, producing vortices. I guess there were also gusts, so the wind speed wasn´t constant. The pilot did really a great job and landed the plane masterfully.
You are right, the wind was in and out the airport limits for more than half an hour, before the ATC cleared the TAP to land, so it was a small gap on the big gusts! After this one, 2 planes did a go around because of windshear on short final :) Thanks for watching!
agreed .. very skilled
Wow, what a pilot! I was clenching just watching.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching :)
Salute to the piolet as well as the person who captured this video.
Thanks a lot for your kind words, glad you enjoyed the video!
I'm glad I can't see that when I'm sitting in the plane.
Indeed :) Thanks a lot for watching!
Oh, you can feel it. Trust me, those passengers are terrified.
That pilot deserves a hug!
Indeed, really nice job!
Wow . Beautifull and adventurous landing . Shock to see this type of plane landing.
This type of landing is very common worldwide, is a perfect crabbing, a technique used on crosswinds landings. Thanks for watching!
