My granddad (pops i called him) had a kengal imported and he was an absolute beast young even for the breed. His name was Pax because he was worth a whole pack. My pops loved that dog more than anything in this world but he knew what his job was. Due to this he "Armored" Pax with a strong wide thick spiked collar to protect his neck and a custom made jacket that protected his back and bum which also had smaller spikes. My pops didn't lose a single animal under the watch of Pax he was like a juggernaut on the field of battle so intimidating most of his wars were won without him even having to fight. He was the best dog ever. Loyal and gentle with insurmountable strength in body and mind but great with kids playful and happy. When Pax retired he got a nice normal collar and my pops retired with him. The big ball of love managed to live until 13! unusual for such a big dog but nothing with Pax surprised me. Not even a week after Pax passed away I found my pops in the morning still sitting in his old style rocking chair. He had died in his sleep and he had Paxs collar gripped in his hands. It is and always will be the sweetest and equally saddest thing I have ever seen. I never allowed them to remove the collar from his hands. He was buried still holding it. Eventually I dug up Paxs lovely big box after I was given permission to re bury it on top of my pops because the thought of them being so far apart kept me awake at night! I know it sounds insane but it gave me peace.

I heard the story from my friend about a kangal facing a pack of 6 wolves. Although outnumbered the kangal confronted the wolves and stood his ground. Unfortunately the shepherd (my friends grandfather) arrived too late with his shotgun to repel the pack and his kangal was mortally wounded by too many bites and died the same night. But his bravery saved the flock, he fulfilled his duty paying the ultimate price. There can't be a dog breed more loyal, brave and fearless than a kangal. Like a Spartan breed!

In 1990, I was working in the field on a highway construction. I was a newly graduated civil engineer and was staying at the construction site. We had 2 kangal dogs at the construction site. One night I woke up to the sounds of barking growling and roaring. When I opened the container's door, a brown bear was fighting with the Kangals. I watched for a few seconds in amazement. The bear stood on its two legs and clawed at the attacking Kangals like a racket. One of the coils gave up and fled the battle, while the other continued to attack, but the bear was too big and strong. If he continued like this, he would kill the kangal. I immediately ran inside, grabbed the shotgun, and aimed at the bear. However, the rifle had 2 cartridges used for bird hunting and could not stop the bear. There was a distance of 20-25m between us, and if the Bear was injured, he would have gotten even more angry and killed me. Therefore, I fired 1 shot into the air, my aim was just to make the bear get scared and run away. In the stillness of the night, the sound of the rifle resounded from the mountains, and the bear stood up and looked at me, and we were eye to eye. I immediately aimed the rifle at the bear's eyes again. The bear got on all fours and started to run towards the mountain. I fired the rifle once so it wouldn't come back. When it was all over, Kangal lay motionless on the floor, but he was breathing, his chest heaving. He lifted his head slightly, looked at me, and leaned back to the side. In the morning, when the sun broke, I went to look at Kangala, she was lying in her bed. The bear's claws cut all over him, and his feathers were red from the flowing blood. He only drank a little water until evening that day and did not eat anything. He wouldn't let anyone near him or have his wounds cleaned. Finally we found a healer who understands these things, he cleaned his wounds, dressed him. It took a month to get back to his old self, but he was braver and stronger than before. He was the hero of our construction site.

@@Trianglewitch. yes and no. For example, if my kids play outside and other kids (he does not know) come up they are vigilant. But if they know the kids or the kids are accepted on our territory by us they too get the same protection. Funny thing is, he has only one master (me) but if i play rough with the kids he steps in. Not aggresively,but just to let me know he's watching things don't go to far. Amazing dogs. Only downside is the aggression to other dogs. Basicly every dog he didn't grow up with is considered a threath. So dog parks are a big no go.
When i was 8years old the Kangal of my grandparents bite me in my face... I still got the scars... And i played with this Dog before... When they sleep and you scare them it dosent Matter If you are a child... They will bite.
As soon as I seen a lion and tiger get brought up I lost my mind because there's not a chance that any dog can live or survive those bigcats.
I live in Türkiye and i can say that if you have your kangal dog next to you, you won't be afraid of anything. Because he will protect you from any danger including bears. Sadly i don't have a kangal yet but i hope i will have in future.

An adult male grizzly can grow as big as 1700lbs. Polar bears can grow past 2000lbs. There's no way a solo dog can take on such powerhouses.
200 pound humans have killed bears for 1000s of years, little tiny mosquitos have killed humans for 1000s of years, bears fear wolverines , big cats - honey badgers, etc. Those animals didnt have human assistance such as 1000s of years co-existing with humans good water, meals and cool collars, in the open the Kangal has a hard to comprehend endurance that allows them to not only far out maneuver but also chase, bite, wear down much larger animals until the advisory has no more energy to fight and at that point the Kangal is just getting started to deliver very devastating bites and they don't stop. Tactics not sheer size play into any dog breed's advantages over nature and livestock, its a benefit of being mans best friend. Kangal dogs have been bread for this purpose for a long long time . funny twist- my 15 pound terrier picks on my 120 pound Kangal.

I was given a dog at the age of 10. We always thought it was a mutt. But watching this I'm starting to think it could have been this breed. I could not keep the dog at my home, because my mom rented. But my grandpa, who lived in the country, took him for me. Myself and my cousins always loved how big he was and took short rides on his back often. He was the same color and had the curled tail like this breed. And my grandpa told me he was the best guard dog he had ever seen. Not sure what he protected the property from but where my grandpa lived we have seen fox, a small bear, possum, raccoons, snakes, and other small wild animals. So I assume it had to be one of these. He would also catch his own food😅my grandpa loved that the most. He would eat squirrel, rabbits, and whatever else he could catch. But I remember how any time my cousin's and I would go explore the woods near my grandpa's home or just go for a walk down those long empty country roads, my loyal dog was next to us the entire time. He was so strong and beautiful. I miss him so much💕
The big guard dogs love their humans. I had a mastiff/pit bull that weighed 130lbs in his prime and he was #1 protector. He loved us but would not tolerate another dog around him, male or female. I had to walk him in remote areas where people rarely went.

@Eric Miller, I was going to say... Are they sure the donkey isn't protecting the dog. 😂 Many farmers have stopped using dogs as you say and have opted to use donkeys to protect livestock. I mean they also have a powerful bite and a powerful kick.
My son is willing to pay high dollars for a dog like this and around his small children he has a ton of bears in his neighborhood I told him he needs a few of these dogs they're beautiful and amazing ❤️❤️❤️🐾🐾🐺🐕
I raised and sold these for years. They are known as Anatolian Shepherds. There are enough around now that the price shouldn’t be prohibitive . Don’t buy a show dog as they breed for conformation. Get one from a farm., a working dog. If one is left only with the animals he probably won’t be socialized and there fore dangerous. One raised with people interacting will be ok. They do seek to enlarge their territory to patrol, therefore they want to get out. They also dig a hole to lay in as a way of hiding from predators. Their head is laid up on the rim.other than these traits they are the best, they come up in the morning to be petted and then remain on duty afterwards. They don’t have a prey drive but desire to keep everything safe. In the west they are used for sheep. They are killed by a wolf pack or a grizzly but will stand up to do their duty. I have a Kangal that I got as rescue dog. Such a gentle nature about him and so loyal. Wants to make friends with every human and dog that he encounters

Wolves have been around hundreds of thousands of years longer and are still the apex predator. Don't forget it. One of my two huskies is a low content hybrid. It's an honor and privilege to be in its presence everyday. Kangal are amazing animals and one isn't better than the other, but the wolf is still the Apex.

My grandpa used to breed and raise kangals, he said that there was something special about a kangal's bark, it's quite similar to a lion's roar, might be about the decibels or sound frequency. Kangals often don't even have to fight the opposition due to their super scary barks. Scientists need to do a research on this cause I am quite certain that a kangal's bark induces a different of fear and forces most animals to flee.
Timber wolves are not the same as the smaller wolves in your country.Healthy and mature a Timber wolve can be easily over 200lbs.Itll be like a 200lb trained boxer vs a 200lb citizen.The wolf being the 200lb trained boxer.

5 Great Pyrenees (Similar breed--Slightly larger) were abandoned on a farm in Arkansas. They started hunting for food... Ended up taking bison. After animal control failed a few times they sent hunters in. They were run off as well. They had to take them out with sharpshooters from a helicopter.
I have clean blooded Kangal, and when i feed him he takes peace of meat from my hand fast, but when my 2 year old daughter gives a dog piece of meat he takes it so slowly so it does not scare a child. I never seen in my life more caring dog then Kangal. By the way it has the strongest bite of all dogs including wolfs and hyenas documented on discovery channel.
Hyenas are no dogs. They are catlike animals. And im not shure but i believe theor fightforce is bigger when Thema frlm kangals.

Lol no. Hyenas have the strongest biteforce of those 3. The bite force of spotted Hyenas averages(!) at around 1,100 PSI.

I have worked with dogs of all breeds mixed and pure most of my life. I can testify to the tremendous heart all these dogs of various sizes and breeds have when raised with love and care as well as discipline and rewards. I recommend anyone wanting to have a dog to research the breed that most fits the environment and purpose before they just run out and get one because there cute or funny etc. Some dogs take a lot more control than others at the start but in time they all become cute and funny as well as very very smart to your habits and moods. I never recommend letting your dog fight with anything when possible. I understand the work dogs with live stock protection or law enforcement. Keep in mind all these dogs really want is to please and help you and your family. You are there new Pack they are looking out for you. Spend as much quality time with your dogs as possible. Remember they are watching you and your habits as much as you are them. I have had some very nasty dog bites in 60 yrs as expected working learning and training canines. Patience and love. The breeds used for bears and big cats are for intimidation, tracking and deterrence. Absolutely NOT fighting!!! If you really love your dog you won't let them engage.

A pack might, but no single dog could. I know Kangals, and Ridgebacks ( I have lived with both breeds). They were bred to guard livestock from wolves, bears and (Ridgebacks) lions. Individually they will die to protect a flock or herd, but in a pack, they will force a bear or lion away from the flock or herd.

Most bears won't confront a pack of dogs but some large brown bears follow canids to take their food or take out a member. A male brown bear at 1,000lbs+ isn't concerned with a pack of dog.

I don't know as much about lions, but bears hate domestic dogs. A group of barking dogs can scare most bears away even if they are too small to stand any chance in a fight. Don't confuse wolves and dogs, a bear will follow wolves in order to steal a kill. That happens all the time. They hate domestic dogs though. I'm not 100% sure why, perhaps they associate them with humans, perhaps they are just so foreign to anything they see in the wild that they aren't sure what to make of them. I've lived in bear country for a long time, dogs are one of the best defenses you can have to prevent bear incursions on your property.

@@SighNaps Not a Kangal but any dog smaller than you (which are most dog breeds) simply let him go for your arm, then shove your arm as far down his throat as possible, pinning him down to the ground and with your other hand gouge his soft spots (eyes, genitals, throat). Not sure what plan you'd have for engaging a bear in a confined space or if back up against a corner.

We're so grateful and proud to have this breed as our heritage. What should also be mentioned is how low maintenance Kangals are so poor shepherds can have a team of them.
To freaking funny. Kangals are wonderful animals but keep in mind the wolves in the region they were bred in are barley bigger than our coyotes. A North american/ Canadian wolf is a different story altogether. And there is no way a kangal is going to kill even an average size black bear, much less a grizzly. Might run one off, but in an all out fight that dog will be bear scat.
Well considering Turkeys heritage is that of Greek genocide and displacement from a city that doesn't belong to turkey, at least their dogs are worth visiting the country for.

Hate to be a mailman in far of Anatolia!😵 BTW, until 100 years ago Kaspian tigers roamed there, not to mention until the early middle ages you had Earasian lions there and they still have leopards. It's a rough place.
I had a stray adopt me out here one day. I couldn't keep her, but she followed me for like 3 or 4 miles. She was very protective of me. If I could have kept her I would have, in a heart beat. Broke my heart that I had to lose her in the city. (That was no easy task either.) I had to buy her water a few times, because, yes during that walk, she did start to get heated up. All love, all play, but she could sense when my back was going to lock up (I have a bad back) and she figured that out in a matter of probably 30 minutes. I was so impressed with her. If I ever get property here, or go back to the US and get property... I'll get one of these and take it with me. (Strays run rampant out here.)
Kangal's are great farm dogs. They always protect the herd and will kill intruders coming inside the fence line. I have found dead racoons, opposums and bob cats. They are fast and stealth. Just an amazing breed, but good with part of the family dogs but not strange dogs. This is because they are extremely territorial, guarding their food and herd. Off leash command is not a trait you will ever have with these dogs. So you can't let them wonder in the neighborhood. They crave owner's attention and are totally devoted to family.
My guy is just the best . He follows his nose for sure . And when someone who lived in the city saw him as a pup and said " WE want one just like him " I replied " No you don't " HE saunters off sometimes just around a couple of blocks , visits his friends houses and will not come if you pay him ! But what a companion ~

I've had English Bullmastiffs most of my 52 years on starship earth and i always felt my three boy's were safe when Iggy Pup was out walking with them....R.I.P IGGY PUP this boy was a MONSTER with a gentle nature but when anyone came up the driveway or though the front gate he would ROAR and if he wasn't on his run and didn't know you he had the habit of Bowling them from behind and standing over them no growling wagging tail let's do it again come on seen some very pale people who can't read signs on the driveway gate or the pathway gate he would never bite was just a fun game..... Man i miss that boy IGGY PUP

7 Hyenas (the strongest bite force of any land animal) could take down a male lion, no way 10 of these could take down a full grown male Siberian tiger, the tiger would shred them.
"Biologists think a wolf can bite at 1,200 psi." What biologists think that? That is the brown bear's bite force. It is a much bigger animal, with noticeably more massive jaw muscles. A wolf cannot chomp anywhere near as powrfully as a bear.
bite force doesn't really mean much. Even if a brown bear had the bite force of a human (160 psi on average) an adult brown bear would still be more than capable of taking on even a large wolf without too much difficulty with their weight and height advantage, especially since a bear doesn't need to rely on its bite since it has powerful forearms, heavy paws, and long sharp claws.

For that matter, bite force does not mean much? Do tell, Summa Cum Laude graduate of Dunning Kruger University, why did brown bears evolve bite force enough to crush a bowing ball, if it does not mean much? A bite force like that costs calories to build, maintain, and use, which are not always abundant. Unneeded morphology atrophes, rather quickly, i.e., the brown bear's ancestral hump recding in polar bears in just a few tens of thousands of years, and oddly enough, much of the brown bear's masticating muscles, too.
Bite force PSI doesn't necessarily mean much on it's own. You also have to look at BFQ (bite force quotient) A smaller rounded jaw with blunter teeth will apply the pressure over a larger area where as sharper canines will apply more pressure to a smaller area so the jaw shape, the shape of the teeth, how wide the jaw can open etc all play a part. Most estimates are educated guess work and even a successful test doesn't necessarily mean it's the hardest the animal can bite or even the bite came from the best possible grip etc. Maybe a wolf was estimated at 1200 BFQ from a very small point of the tooth where as a bear applying say even 700 PSI will be more effective for example especially in certain circumstances. Not many people understand this and for example a Tiger has a stronger bite than a Jaguar it's just that as a Tiger is 2x & even 3x larger than a Jaguar in some cases it's bite is for example only 0.5x more powerful (another way to say this as it's difficult to explain so a Jaguars bite is 3/4 as powerful as a Tiger and less than half it's size and sometimes more if that makes sense?) making the Jaguar pound for pound much more impressive in relation to bite force, but make no mistake I'd rather take a bite from a Jaguar than a Tiger.

When my son was about 11 years old he entered a Jaycee Relay Race. He’d never ran track before and didn’t know everybody wore shorts. He came in jeans, to everyone’s amusement. He ran the last leg for his team - and came away the fastest runner of the day, and made up considerable distance to win. This video made me think of that day. How I wish I had been able to see it, instead of only hear and read about it. I was a single mom and had to work. My son was an amazing athlete. ❤️

Kangals are strong(er) dogs for sure but even people who take care of them in Turkey will tell you, Kangal is no match for an alpha Wolf or a bear. They are just not viscous enough to kill a wild predator, especially one that have adapted to the terrain, has very high stamina and intelligence like a wolf.

Simply not true at all…my brother has a Great Pyrenees and it took off one night after something…you could hear what sounded like screaming and when my brother finally got to where the dog was, there was blood everywhere and the dog was covered in it…but it wasn’t his blood…he had killed 3 coyotes in about 2-3 minutes…the dog barely had a scratch…and a Kangal can wreck a Great Pyrenees one on one…did you not just see the video where they are trying to literally kill a wolf…a grizzly, etc

One thing you forgot is they are extremely understanding and lovely around children and people who are no threat to them. You can ride a kangal like a horse and it will let you if it knows you without a whine, a baby can pull its tail and kangal won’t even growl a little.

Kodiaks don't like dogs though. A kodiak will go after an individual dog if it's in it's way, and they may even try to take on a few if it's mid-late fall because they get desperate if they haven't eaten enough. 90% of the time though, a few dogs will send a brown bear running. I'm not sure if it's because they associate a domestic dog with human presence, or if they just seem alien to a bear because they don't look like anything else. The general rule in bear country for a medium sized property is 3 dogs (triple that if you've got stock or pigs), and it tends to work well.

I had a akita lab cross; Hoss was his name. He never lost a fight, and he was in a lot of them. 125 pounds of big black dog, I got him a spiked collar it came in handy a couple of times. He never started the fight, but he was always on top. I would pull him off by his tail, much safer then his head. Every night he go around to every kids room while they slept to make sure they where ok. Best dog I ever had! He made it to 12 1/2 years. Dog need to live longer!

As soon as I see a dog with a spiked collar, the first thing I think of is how cowardly the owner must be. Of course your dog never lost a fight, he was wearing a spiked collar so how could he lose? If you had to pull him off by his tail, that means he wasn't on a leash and you were pitting him against other dogs. Another cowardly act from the owner of a mixed breed. Your whole story reeks of cowardice.
Against a full-grown arctic or timber wolf in it's prime, the best any domestic dog could do in a pit would be a draw. Luck would be involved. Against a bear? Forget it.

I work at a dog food manufacturing warehouse and we have one these guys there. Love the guy to death. The picture in the beginning of the video with the Kanghal standing on its human is a legit size comparison. I'm six foot two and the kanghal stands on me and looks me in the eyes before he gives me a smooch.
When my Siva stands on the fence and looks over to bark at people he looks like a man , with such big shoulders . Nothing or nobody is coming over my fence ! What a lucky dog to work at the dog food place , that's a great story ! With all the people he must be so happy :)

The scene of the dog chasing the the bear and its baby cubs sums it up for me. These dogs no doubt have a place but to romanticise their ability to kill wildlife is a foley.

Had me hooked in the beginning with the spiked neck collar for other dog, wolf, and bear attacks. Never thought about that once. Pretty cool. And the dog is awesome. I remember a good breed of dog to guard sheep from coyotes, it was featured in cartoons and it mostly used it's fists instead of biting, but the long bangs sometimes got in the way of his sight.
Or you could just get a Roadrunner to distract the coyote, they'll spend days on end trying to catch that sucker and it usually ends in a face plant right into a wall.

A tiger alone can take on and kill 4 dogs in a single fight.. probably kill them all before it exhausts itself. A bear, with so much stamina is an obvious win.

you are hundred percent right, but protection is not always to defeat. i have 4 kangals and 2 rotties, and never seen a rotweiller pitbull or cane corso to attack a pack of wolves. But i saw many times low nomber of kangal going after them. wild animals are always have to protect their selves, a kangal bite may harm them serious and they know it. so its like a firewall sometimes. but in their teritory a bear, or a puma must have to face to face with a kangal if they want something from there. and they will die but wont let them to go easyly

Totally agree ! And, in the rare event an adult Timber Wolf had a one on one with a Kangal, the Timber Wolf would incapacitate the Kangal within minutes. As big and powerful as Kangals are, they are simply no match for either a full grown bear or Timber Wolf…

a bear runs from a dog not because he is afraid of it, but rather its not worth the energy to fight it. Also if a bear is wounded in the fight, it knows it may die. An average size black bear of around 300 pounds as a paw strike of approximately 450 lbs, psi. No dog no matter how strong or vicious, is a match for a black bear in a one on one fight, and the black bear is neither the largest or most ferocious of the bear family.

So to people in the comments saying "well they couldn't beat a full grown grizzly 1v1" while you're absolutely right about that, let me tell you they couldn't beat a black bear either. A bear's fur is soooo thick it's just impossible to kill alone for a dog of any kind. A dog only has jaws while the bear has that plus claws. If the dog manages to get the first hit and grab onto the bear; 1st of all it won't do much damage due to the bear's thick fur and 2nd the bear will still be able to claw at the dog with devastating results. So no, a lone dog could never beat a bear in 1v1 battle to the death. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either delusional or an anime fan.

But yea, wolves do know not to mess with them, but if they really have to they would try defending their pup's or whatever it is.
