Entertainment Personality and Entrepreneur, Charlamagne Tha God, a.k.a Lenard McKelvey, joins The Pivot Podcast for a conversation covering everything from mental health to evolving as men personally and professionally and his approach to growth as he continues to expand his entertainment empire. Keying in on the changes and steps as men they can all take to be better friends, husbands, dads and role models for younger generations. Not shying away from his shortcomings and mistakes over the years, he acknowledges the wrongs he did personally and professionally but is proud of who he is today. The guys talk about men in position to succeed and allowing the weaknesses of women, sex and ego take away from the hard work is the biggest mystery to him as they talk about the recent situation with Celtics Head Coach Ime Udoka and the lessons that can be learned.
Ryan, Fred, and Channing dive into his journey and his transformation to stardom as he opens up about changing his name to his upbringing and environment. Growing up and hustling was part of his daily grind and recognizing his time as a drug dealer, Charlamagne was headed down a dangerous path when his life changed doing local radio.
Infamously known for his hot takes and wide open opinions on celebrities that would trigger negative reactions, Charlamagne tells the guys that it has never been his intention to rile people up, he was just always speaking honestly and saying the things everyone thought but was afraid to say. Never giving up on his dream, even after being fired several times, the years of experience and relationships led him to creating a media empire and recently being inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame, Charlamagne reflects on his path and recognizes to Fred, Channing, and Ryan that there are definitely things he wishes he could redo or should have held back on when speaking on others lives and careers but the biggest compliment to him is acknowledging the growth from that place to where he is now.
Although he had and currently has what others consider the “perfect life”, Charlamagnes opens up and shares with the guys that there were very dark times and there was always this undiscovered void to fill. Influenced at an early age by his surroundings and environment, Charlemagne was on the verge of self-sabotage due to infidelity and substance abuse until he made the Pivot seven years ago to attend therapy which has been life-changing.
Therapy and counseling have always been frowned upon in black communities and Charlamagne has set out to change that philosophy and instill a new approach with one of seeking help and preventing activities to promote self sabotage instead of encouraging it. Fred also shares his struggles of anxiety over the years and how therapy has helped ground him and offer him alternatives to get through certain situations which he shares hoping to help others in similar situations.
Charlamagne also talks about the upcoming changes for the popular global morning show The Breakfast Club and lets everyone know that change is part of the process and that opportunities for others is what life is all about and spins the changes into a positive vs the drama everyone wants to create around it. Transition has been the most rewarding part of his life and continues to use his experiences to help others and shape the lives of young people, starting with his own family.

  • Fred, your vulnerability had me tearing up. My son is 20, he deals with anxiety/depression and refuses to go to therapy bc it’s not “cool”. Nor is there a strong male force in his life to help him understand how it can help him. I’m gonna have him watch this interview to listen at how multimillionaire men can still have the same issue he has and get help. Thanks for sharing, Fred. You don’t know how much this helped me! ♥️🙌🏾

All the times of staying up, overthinking about all the bad scenarios that could possibly happen in life and going down the worst possible rabbit holes of all time are actually because of anxiety... That's really revolutionary and full circle that his podcast made me realize that. I've had therapists that didn't get this right but I feel like a new part of me is opened up and I'm happy about that because it means I'll finally know how to deal with it to a degree of course. You can never truly get rid of something like that but as Fred said, by not putting myself in situations that will cause anxiety, I will be much better off in life and live a much healthier lifestyle. Thank you pivot cast. 🙏🏿

  • I really appreciate the PIVOT and having positive quality guests with transparent and authentic communication within our culture. I also would like to see more conversations with solutions on not being ruining black women & running over us due to EGO, ENTITLEMENT ATTITUDE & IMMATURITY… healing is necessary & there’s NO shortcuts in doing the work…

  • I loved the conversation about how to keep your kids grounded ..I don’t have a lot but me and my kids travel 2 or 3 times a year and I want to teach them everyone doesn’t have this privilege…but after this conversation I’m wondering why am I so adamant about teaching them that ..I just want them to never think they are better than anyone because I was the little girl that never took vacation, got my passport in my 30s
