This is how I usually color my 2d animation work. This is not a software tutorial, or walkthrough video. I just share my philosophies when it comes to coloring. Also take a shot everytime I say "basic" or "basically".

  • A really quick time-saving trick in Toon Boom is that you can actually select all lines of the currently selected colour, and then delete them, so cleanup is pretty simple. I've even found that situationally, I can turn my brush strokes into pencil lines, fill them in, select the colour of the lineart, and then just delete it, so there's no bleed-over with softer line brushes when you have duplicates of the lineart.

  • Hi Toniko, Love your videos!. For Toon Boom, I think you can create a solid matte pass based on line info by going to drawing > generate auto matte ( you do have to have "support Overlay and Underlay Arts" ticked in your preferences under the "Advanced "Tab) you can also turn off the visibility of the Underlay sublayer once you're done by going into the Layers's "layer properties" > "Drawing" Tab. I hope this info helps your workflow!

  • Cool tutorial: A few tips for Toon Boom: -If you're working in vector mode, enable "Automatically Create Colour Art" in your Tool Properties. Then you can just paint on the colour art layer without having to duplicate the entire layer. (NOTE: does not work with bitmap) -To automatically create an alpha matte pass for every frame, change the Paint tool to Paint Unpainted, and enable "Apply To All Frames" in Tool Properties. Then just draw a lasso around your drawing area and you're done! Or, just click Drawing>Generate Auto-Matte and it does it in one click.

And in the opentoonz the bitmap work can color automatically the guide line for the shadow. And open to one has a beautiful method of coloring multiple frames at the same time, it can be really helpful

  • Added to my watch later for when I'm off work. I always get my creative drive when drawing is impracticle. Not sure if youve ever covered this but what about a video about early planning? Ive done a couple gifs here and there over the years but I wanna start getting serious with making some shorts, but I find that planning and timing keys are a really abstract concept for me and Ive been trying to find either guides or streams where the animator starts out from just a blank canvas and breaks down the key framing and breakdown process. I get how it works on paper but I feel like Im missing something when I comes to increasing/decreasing exposure to find the right timing. Most videos on yt tend already start off somewhere in the inbeteewning phase and I feel like I'm missing out on juicy info that doest get much talk for a noob.

  • Tvpaint is much more nicer now for coloring with the CTG layers!! No need to worry about the gap closer leaving white areas because of textured lines. I don't need to use any matte layers thanks to that anymore. plus the option to switch color from the pallet for the whole shot is amazing. I think toon boom also has something like this...

  • In Harmony all layers actually have a separate line and color layer by default meaning that there's no need to create additional layers in your timeline for keeping line and color separate. What you need to do once you have your clean line art is use: "Create Colour Art from Line Art" feature and this will automatically generate invisible strokes in your color layer which you can then paint in. There's also no need to paint each frame one by one as you can speed up the process using the onion skin feature to color in several frames all at once. Also, nodes are extremely powerful within Harmony and there's no need to use an additional compositing app like After Effects to achieve things like cel shading or lighting fx.

  • Do you have any advice about how much time it should take to do the final line clean drawings and colour for each drawing ? I understand that could vary quite a bit , depending on the character details, but "on average" how many clean final line drawings per hour/per day is considered an acceptable standard in the industry and how many colour frames per hour/per day ? Maybe specific examples: like if you had to cleanup and colour a sequence of animation using your mascot character , Bon Bon, how many clean line drawings per hour/per day would be average , compared to clean line drawings of a more detailed character like the warrior dog character (at around 3:17 ) ? Obviously being able to draw faster is better (as long as the quality holds up) , but I think it would be nice to have a goal to shoot for . For someone starting as an entry-level cleanup artist , how many drawings a day would be expected ? With more experience how many drawings a day does an experienced cleanup artist typically do per hour/per day ?

  • I was wondering what programs you were using lol. I stick to Blender for all my needs along with Vegas pro for simple and a bit faster simple parallaxing along with any other possible lighting effects. I know this was made 2 years ago, but it's still fun to see and witness. thing is I usually do just layer per layer. I hate puppeting I feel like it's cheating really. I feel like more love and passion goes into it layer wise. What I love about artwork in general though there are so many ways to create and as long as you have the skill, passion and imagination you can make things come to life!

  • Toniko, you know that there's a sublayer you can use for coloring in Toon Boom, right? 6:10, to the right of the drawing area there are three icons: an eye icon, an icon with two stacked rectangles and an L, and an icon with two stacked rectangles and a C. The L icon toggles the vector line art sublayer, which you're currently drawing on, and the C icon toggles the vector color sublayer. You'll need to pass vector information from the line art sublayer onto the color sublayer before you can use the fill tool. To do this, there is an icon just above the drawing area that depicts three arrows sandwiched between two curves, one gray and one blue. Once it has been clicked, the vector information should have transferred onto the color sublayer of your current frame and you can begin coloring. Idk if you already know of this feature and you've just elected to not use it, but I figured I'd give you the info just in case you didn't. Great video otherwise, love your stuff!

    @UltraInstinctYiik@UltraInstinctYiik3 жыл бұрын
    • I turned it off because I used to have a keyboard short cut that would unintentionally switch between the color and line art layers, and most of the times I don't know if I switched. Also my shots are not super complex, and its easier for me to see the different layers in the timeline. I'll eventually find a way to use it someday.

      @TonikoPantoja@TonikoPantoja3 жыл бұрын
    • yes, this! and the keyboard shortcut for creating colour art (ei. the strokes) from the lineart is * if i remember correctly. Toon boom also has an option to generate a matte, as a default it puts it in the underlay art layer. although from my experience it's more useful for rough animation, as it's not super accurate and filling in actual clean lines won't leave random gaps like in a raster based software. Just in case it's of any use to anyone, here's the link to the documentation :) docs.toonboom.com/help/harmony-10-3/Content/HAR/Stage/005_Traditional_Animation/282_H4_Generating_a_Matte_for_Your_Animation_.html

    @mnicacruz@mnicacruz3 жыл бұрын
    • Both TVPaint and Toonboom Harmony are drawing programs , with an animation timeline for arranging and compositing the drawings in a sequence, so you can make the drawings directly in TVPaint or Harmony. There is also the option of drawing animation with pencil on paper and scanning the drawings , then import them into TVPaint or Harmony for coloring. And you could , in fact, make the drawings in another program , such as Photoshop , Sketchbook, or Rough Animator, etc. , then import them in to TVPaint or Harmony as an image sequence to finish by adding coloring and effects .

I copied the structure of the lineart layer and i filled a base colour and press enter instead of keeping the structure of the lineart layer it just put everything on ones suddenly (I mostly work on 2s) And i tried the same for the erase part which also works and when i pressed enter It didnt keep my layer structure again it cuts them all to 1s again :< It was fine since i was making a small GIF animation But how can I change this since I really like the work flow of this?

    @Y00rana@Y00rana3 жыл бұрын
    • Hi! Not sure why that would happen, I've never had a similar issue with this method, but if at the end of the process you're left with two of the exact same drawings next to each other (ei. your animation had drawings on twos - so 1-2-3-, and after this whole thing your matte/solid drawings look like this - 112233), try going to image>exposure>recompute exposure and see if that helps? i'd be curious to know. good luck!

      @navigating-the-void@navigating-the-void3 жыл бұрын
    • _"it didnt keep my layer structure again it cuts them all to 1s again"_ - You can prevent that by disabling Auto-Break Instance , located in the layer stack to the left of the timeline . (look up Auto-Break Instance in the online TVPaint User Guide). OR if you did not turn off Auto-Break Instance and your instances (drawings) were all changed to ONES , select all the instances on the layer and then click on the button *=?* in the Handy Custom Panel, under Set Exposure . Clicking the *=?* button will recompute all the instances to their previous exposure . (look up Handy Custom Panel , Set Exposure in the online TVPaint User Guide found on TVPaint's website)
