www.alaskawildlife.org Last week Athena and Artemis, our two rescued female muskox calves, were moved into their new enclosure and met for the first time. We caught it all on film so come join Athena as she greets her new friend Artemis and have their first “play date”. At first these two weren’t sure what to make of each other but they’re becoming fast friends! Be sure to come by the AWCC and see Athena and Artemis in their new home behind the Animal Infirmary.

  • I worked at a mining exploration camp one summer. We found two baby muskox maybe a few days old. There’re mom was killed by wolves. We took the muskox back to camp with us . We had to try and find a baby formula for them. We had to call vets from all over the world to get one that was good for the baby muskox. A vet from the Calgary Zoo came up with one that worked. It had to be changed a few times to get it right. Anyway the time spent with the baby muskox was priceless we had so much fun with them. They were like dogs they loved to play butt you when you least expect it. They finally went to the Calgary Zoo at the end of the season.

  • I am surprised by the friendliness of bovines. My only exposure has been to domestc dairy cattle which seemed kinda dull perhaps due to over breeding

  • How strong is the musk ox horns?

    @ronaldpagar6513@ronaldpagar65133 жыл бұрын
    • Quite strong - muskox bulls ram each other with the tops of their horns, called the "boss". This is 3-4 inches thick and their skull beneath is about 2 inches thick, so they have plenty of protection.

  • Not to start a controversy but the mother could have died from several reasons, but encroachment is probably not one of them ....just so people know.....predators, age, terrain, etc.

    • Southern California is waaaaay too hot for them. They are Arctic animals. Anything over 60F is sweltering heat to them. Sorry!

  • Cute, but it's not a good sign that even muskoxen who live in one of the most inhospitable and remote environments on the planet need to be rescued, probably from humans that are encroaching on their territory for "economical" reasons, or in other words greed.

    • Earth needs triage. All kinds of creatures are doomed at this point. Now there are many who argue that the temps aren't reaching untenable levels. When Dunning-Kruger effect kills.

    • Maybe, but I’ll bet they came from someone who was trying to keep them as pets. The thing about living in inhospitable and remote environments is there aren’t usually many people there.
