"A Saucerful of Secrets" was titled "The Massed Gadgets of Hercules" in its earliest performance and became a Pink Floyd live staple from 1968--72. A live version of the track is available on their 1969 double album Ummagumma, and an alternative version is seen and heard in the film Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii,

I can't explain exactly why, but this piece is painfully beautiful. It sounds like something lost in ancient times, like primordial nostalgia...
Gregorian chant for angels. The lack of lyrics with choir boy sounds.
So beautifully put. This is how I feel watching this masterpiece
like something found from pompeii
I wonder what that “saucer full of secrets” is about is it the area of pompeii itself and the wonder of what lies below the unexcavated ground or maybe the tale of Mt Vesuvius as a “saucer,” it’s magma and hot ash a “secret,” from the beginning it builds up to a crescendo where it explodes, just like the song.

The band Crumb makes songs like this: "MR", "it never ends" - Crumb is one of the top bands today.
I love how they're here performing in an empty Roman Amphitheatre, in the middle of a ruined city, playing only for the ghosts of the Romans, while the wind blows the sand and their long hair, while David cries to the ghosts with all his passion, communicating with them. Reenacting their woeful cries as they were engulfed in fire. This is what this performance means to me. This is why they're really here.
That's what I thought....connection between souls
They are playing right where all the combat spectacles took place. The games. Then there was the eruption.

Such an inspiration for my music
My personal favorite has got to be the Ummagumma live version. It looks (yes it looks, and sounds) amazing on LSD!

If you listen to the whole song it creates such a bigger and more satisfying feel to it. Its what makes Pink Floyd, Pink Floyd.
