Coming from the IT industry (40y male) I've found true relaxation in sculpting. I'm really grateful that the yt algorithm recommended your channel as your vids and tutorials are truly amazing contents and helps me tons to understand several aspects and possibilities of air-dry clay. + When my wife heard the video she instantly asked for the channel, your voice and style of speaking is a kind of ASMRish thing for her! Thank you!
Hi, really lovely to hear thank you, I am glad yourself and your wife enjoy, many more projects coming soon, thanks 😊
Very helpful! Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Glad it was helpful, thank you for watching 😊❤️

I’ve just found your videos, and love them. So informative and great projects. I’ve been looking for a hobby to see me through the winter months, and I’ll definitely be giving air dry clay a go! 😊
Wonderful, I hope you love it as much as I do, thank you and WELCOME 🤗🤍
Thank you so much for your wonderful tutorials. I will now go watch the resin video. I am new to air dry clay and am used to painting rocks and then using resin to seal them. Thank you so much for your time and effort!!!
Wonderful, I hope you enjoy your journey through air dry clay…now you can have literally any shape ‘rock’ to decorate 😆❤️😊
I've got the DecoArt DuraClear gloss varnish, and have used it on many projects, including clay for several years; and, now, on the strength of your video, because I've always trusted you, I've just this second sent off for the Triple Thick one. Thank you for this most helpful video. :)
I hope you love it as much as I do, getting all my Christmas clay all lovely and shiny with it 🤩 thank you 😊

This video is so helpful in deciding which varnish is suitable for a particular creation. Thanks so much. ☺️
Glad it was helpful, thank you 😊❤️
Thanks so much for this video. All the ones I've seen so far were for polymer clay, and it's so different from air dry clay. I've heard great things about the triple thick, but I may just use polyurethane because it's the most economical, and I'm just starting out.
The polyurethane I find just takes longer to dry but yes it is economical, best of luck with your creations
When I make items for outdoors I use polyvine exterior I have clay items outdoors that’s been there quite a few years . I highly recommend. Although if you’ve decoupaged the items like mine don’t put them in the sun , shade is definitely better x
Thank you for the tips. I use polyurethane to waterproof in this video: How to Waterproof Air Dry Clay kzhead.info/sun/bJV-hrGQfX-diIk/bejne.html
Thank you Sarah, very useful. There's nothing on KZhead about decorating with air dry slip, trailling or how to make coloured slip. I wonder if mason stains work with Das slip or maybe just acrylics, mica powder...If you ever have the time, could you please make a video on this? 😊
Hi, it’s something I’ve been meaning to experiment with, and guessing not done so much with air dry as probably quite tricky?! Thank you 😊❤️
Thank you very much for your tutorial
You are welcome, thank you 😊
I like ModPodge but I've been in love with DecoArt Triple Thick from the first time that I used it on some Scrabble Tile pendants. It's self-leveling too and when applied thickly will dry to a nice, semi-domed effect (raised edges). Thanks for sharing and I think I'll stick with these two sealers.
Triple thick is very under stated, once found it’s a winner isn’t it, thanks 😊
So interesting! I'm using a spray varnish but I will give the Triple Thick a try. And your little houses are so cute! Any tutorial coming? I would love to see your method. 😉
I used spray lacquer as my go to for a long time and it’s all personal preference really. YES a Christmas air dry clay video is on it’s way 😊🎄❤️ thank you
Well explained
Hope it was helpful, thanks 😊
Thank you so much for your video. I need to seal a cat paw print just plain air dry clay so I’m really cautious on what to use to seal it, so thank you!!
Get a piece of the same air dry clay, let it dry fully and then test what you plan to use on that, that way you’ll know if it’s what you’re looking for, thanks, I hope it works out well
Thanks, very helpful video!! What would you use to seal if you made a planter that would be getting watered on a regular basis? Thanks 🩷🩷
a polyurethane varnish, but it still couldn't sit in water, and may need repeating every year or 2 or when needed, take a look at this video: kzhead.info/sun/bJV-hrGQfX-diIk/bejne.html thanks
Hi, can you use varnished/glazed air dry clay as tea light holders? How do they react when put on top of a candle?
Use one which is not flammable and we never leave a flame unattended. It’s on my list for a video, thanks 😊
I have a smaller variety of varnishes. The only one I've used and not have a good outcome is the triple thick as the last time I used it, it dried tacky so I haven't used it since. However, I may give that a go again when I get the chance to buy a small bottle! Have you tried the Mont Marte (Australian brand) Gloss Clay Varnish Signature? It is made specifically for polymer (apparently may dry tacky on polymer clay due to plasticiser in clay) and air hardening clay (Dried absolutely perfect with no tackiness in my experience). I think it may be polyurethane based. They also made the iridescent varnish with pretty glitter in it.... might look tacky (not feel) to some people but it is quite pretty! Mont Marte makes air dry clay too. Similar to Jovi but a tad more fibrous. I also have the Jo Sonja Polyurethane gloss varnish, Dura-Clear Matte and High Gloss finish. in my experience, they all dried perfectly fine on air dry clay... and the water droplets test. I will get back to you on that! Thank you for your educational videos as always! 🥰
Thank you JoJo. That’s not good that you found it went tacky, I wonder if the bottle needed a good shake or reacted with something, not sure. I really love it. A lot of this style of varnish are fairly similar so worth trying any we can get hold of. What I like about the triple thick is the small sizes they do them in so it’s really not expensive to try a few. I’ve not tried that brand no, sounds like you are a pro crafter 😁 happy crafting 😊❤️
@@RedRockingBird Thank you for your comment/reply! I am not a pro crafter but thank you! haha I just like to experiment for now. I really should get my butt into gear and start making things. I have blocks of Jovi adc waiting for me to make them into something!... and art supplies. Eeek! Yes, I will have to go hunt down the Triple Thick and give it a go again. Oh by the way, water test on 3 varnishes: DuraClear High Gloss Varnish, Jo Sonja Polyurethane varnish and Mont Marte Gloss Signature Varnish. All passed the water droplets test! Unsure about using the varnishes used on the inside of the pot plant though. Hmmm!! Another experiment, looks like! Thank you again, Sarah! I always enjoy your air dry clay videos ❤❤ Happy crafting to you too! 😊😊
@@JojosCraftyLove wonderful, good to hear those 3 also passed the water test. Thank you. I’m currently filming my air dry clay Christmas, it’s so much fun, so definitely save some clay for some of those 😉😁
I am curious if you've ever used Helmsman Spar Urethane or Polycrylic on air dry clay? Thank you for the video, very informative. Have a lovely day.
Helmans I haven’t but both would be great I am sure, what I like about this kind of varnish is you can buy a tin and it literally lasts forever, only downside might be drying time might be a bit longer, test it out if you have some and see what you think, it’s all about just having the confidence and going for it, many thanks 😊❤️
super informative video! is the das varnish non flammable/fire resistant? I want to make an ashtray for a friend but don’t want it to turn into a fire hazard lol. thanks !
I’m not entirely sure on this one
I've just started using air dry clay and your videos have given me so much information, thank you! I have one question if I may? Is it wise to use gesso prior to painting with acrylic and then use varnish on top once dry? Thank you in advance ❤
You can gesso first yes, but I find as long as you give enough coats of varnish over the acrylic or other chosen paint then that is the main thing. I do sometimes undercoat but most often not! Enjoy you air dry clay projects, thanks for watching 😊❤️
Thank you for your reply. Much appreciated 😊

Thank you ❤️Can i use Liquitex pouring medium gloss ?
If you’re ok painting it on then yes I would
Would you say the small tubes of the Deco Art last a long time? Or would you recommend getting the 8fl oz over the 2fl oz bottles?
They don’t seem to go as far as say a tin of varnish, the triple thick is thick 🤪 so doesn’t last so long as you end up putting more on, depends how big your projects are and if they are much better value for bigger bottles or if any are on offer ☺️❤️
Have you ever made a artist's paint palette with airdry clay. I see others have done but am concerned the watercolor will stain or soak through. Do you have recommendations as to what varnish or finish would be most appropriate? Your instructional videos have been very inspiring :)
Yes I have and I do need to make more so I must make a specific video for this, I’d use a strong varnish or resin
Lol, you are going to laugh at me. I had to rewatch this video because I went sound asleep 💤. Nothing to do with you but my age, getting over Covid ( all clear) and a bad headache.😅. Thank you. I can’t use strong odor products because of my allergies. I have used triple thick for painted wooden pieces but not on my clay. I have a brand new bottle of the dishwasher safe Mod Podge. I can’t wait for the next video. 😊❤
😁 bless you, I hope you are feeling better, definitely try the triple thick on the clay. I couldn’t resist getting the dishwasher mod podge… and then just had to test it in the dishwasher on the clay 🙈😆❤️ thanks for watching
@@RedRockingBird doing much better but I’m just getting old🤣😂😊 and when I get tired, I get tried. Some people say I don’t look my age but I feel it especially since my daughters are, 50, 46 and 37.
What sealant do you recommend if you have used watercolour paint instead of acrylic paint to decorate? Tired modge podge on a test piece and like I thought as it's water based it smears the paint so needing options
Hmmm, I tend to use mod podge and brush it on gently, then use something shinier over this: AIR DRY CLAY with Watercolor Video kzhead.info/sun/fK-Mcal7ZHSBfn0/bejne.html
Hello, do we need any protective measures (gloves, etc) when using varnishes like acrylic varnish for example?
Hi, yes I’d always recommend gloves, a mask and good ventilation, and protect surfaces
Can you paint over something that you have varnish or glaze?
Try it, as long as you then seal over the top again I would guess that would be ok
@RedRockingBird, Have you ever tried a using Minwax Water Based Polycrylic Protective Finish [Brush On ] which comes in matte, satin, semi-gloss & gloss? It has little to no VOC's and is easy for clean up. Also, what about Varathane's Water Based Interior Ultimate Polyurethane which also comes in multiple finishes and is low VOC's with easy clean up. Just curious, if you've tried either product, how did it do with the air dry clay? ~~Christy~~
They will be great I’m sure, i don’t think I can get them as easily here in the Uk but have had similar. I could do with a shipment of them ALL 😂❤️ give a try, thanks
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Can we use this if we used pastel colours on airdry clay
I don’t tend to, but you can experiment and as long as you can find a varnish or topcoat to not reactivate the pastel
I've ran out of varnish and cant buy yet cause my fav one is sold out. Is it okay to not use any varnish or coating?
You could leave it for now and then coat once you have some more, even if that is a while away, just don’t put near any moisture or it would soak that up and go soft. Or if you have any mod podge you could give a coat of that and then at a later date still varnish over the top. I have a few unglazed pieces that have been just fine for a while, thanks
Which would be heat resistant if using for coasters but not wanting to use resin?
I’m not so sure on that one
But are they food safe?? I want to make cups for me to drink out of but i didn't see any information in the video about the sealents being food safe
Air dry clay is not food safe, just for decorative purposes
@@RedRockingBird I meant the sealing
Even sealed with food safe the air dry clay isn't food safe.@@Kusgo
@@Kusgo If you want to make something for food, you need to use normal clay like white, red, or porcelain. Sadly, you will need a kiln for this. Air dry clay and polymer clay is made with plastic so it’s not safe to eat off of wether it is varnish or not
could you suggest how to varnish clay without smudging the paint? everytime i varnish it somehow always smudges my acrylic paint under it :(
If you are using acrylic paint and letting it dry 100% before varnishing it shouldn’t smudge at all
question - i am doing a project for my mum's birthday and am making it out of das air dry clay. i am hoping to paint it with acrylics, and then seal it with one of these. do i need to seal the clay or use any of these on the clay before painting and then seal again? or can i paint straight on my dry air-dry clay and then seal it after? anybody's advice would be greatly appreciated! thank you 😊💞
Hi, how wonderful you are creating something special for your Mum’s birthday. Let your piece 100% dry, more than you think, paint with acrylic paint, leave to completely dry again and then varnish, this varnish top coat I find is more important than undercoating, thanks and best of luck 😊
@@RedRockingBird thank you so so much! i will keep you updated with how it goes! 😁
If I make things with mud clay then varnish with any of these will it be food safe?please reply ❤
I’m not as familiar with mud clay, air dry clay is not food safe but traditional earthenware ceramic clay that can be fired is best for being food safe
@@RedRockingBird thank you 😊
Can we wash them after dried? I want to make coasters . Thanks
Meant to add - which varnish for the above purpose. thanks
Best sponge with a damp cloth
For coasters I like UV resin
can you write me which varnish on the circle is "A glass"?

Can I use clear nail polish for glaze?
I have in the past and not had a problem but I don’t recommend as many people say it can become sticky over time, so many different ones they’ll all be different, thanks for watching
And clear nail varnish?
You can and I did in my previous varnishes video, I have one that never went tacky, but plenty of people say that nail polish eventually goes tacky with time, thanks
@@RedRockingBird Any particular brand?
@RedRockingBird ps... unconnected, but do you know of any good arts and crafts advent calendars please?
What's the difference between glaze and varnish?
Glaze is what potters use with ceramics that get fired in a kiln, so for us that use air dry clay we can sometimes get a ‘glaze’ looking finish (shiny) with a varnish or resin etc.
@@RedRockingBird thanks. Not too dissimilar to gloss varnish?
Is this waterproof?
