Essequibo: Hidden River | Extra Long Documentary - • Essequibo: Hidden Rive...
The exclave of the Curonian Spit forms the westernmost tip of Russia with the oldest ornithological research station in the world. In the far east on Kamchatka, Lake Kuril offers a paradise for the world's largest brown bears. High in the north on Yamal live the reindeer herds of the Nenets. Climate change and gas production are rapidly changing their icy world.

    • In Russia, more than 190 nationalities live, six of them with over a million people. Accordingly, the diversity of cultures is also quite significant. I myself lived in the places shown in this film. The state supports the preservation of nations and their languages and ways of life. For example, there are schools where Nenets children are taught in their language, preserving their customs. However, many have moved to the cities, especially the young. Tatars, Ukrainians, Jews, Buryats, Yakuts, Chukchi, Shors, people of the Caucasus... This film showcases a tiny fraction of the diversity. Russia is enormous, allowing for the preservation of uniqueness without complete assimilation, while still sharing a common destiny and an additional common history. I hope it will continue this way.
