God, not only are you a master blacksmith you're also a really tallented presenter to be able to deliver information in such a clear conversational tone while working so hard, you really do make it look easy.
I just took a blacksmithing class today, and I googled "Rounding Hammer" this evening - this popped up. Very nice!
I can’t figure out how to post a picture to the comments, but I just finished making my first pair of tongs. Also my first ever forging project. They’re not great by most standards, but using them makes me so happy. You helped me start this journey, thanks Alec.
just had a blacksmithing class today and one of the instructors mentioned your videos as must watch. just thought you'd like to know. awesome vids, thank you.
That was awesome. What a great job sharing your skill with a younger person.
Hey Alex, I'm wanting to make my own rounding hammers. thanks for videos really enjoy them. keep it up
Loved ur vid man keep it up this is the first vid i watched on making a hammer loved it.
I love your videos man. My son and myself are always excited to get to watch the new video
Alec, you're the best! Now that spring is finally here, in New England, I look forward to spending more time outside and will follow your blacksmithing course. Thank you!
+Frank Fomkin That is fantastic, Frank! I look forward to being of help and value :D Alec
@@AlecSteele I know that you don't have time to read these anymore but I just found your channel in December of 2021 and I'm so impressed by your channel. It's really made me think about trying to get a forge of some kind and try my luck. I just don't know what step #1 is...
I really like these instructional videos, thanks for making them.
I wish I had a hammer like that. Love your videos and you inspired me to start blacksmithing
im not there yet....but im sooooo close! thank you alec for all,you do from all,of us newbies thank you!
Hi Alec. Just love you videos so much. I just started blacksmithing. Yep new lol. Just made a gas forge and not looking at a bigger one right now. Going to make a home made hammer too and a 2'' sander too. And what ever else comes to mind lol. I always was very good with my hands. I'm a carpenter by trade and have been welding for ever too. So I have been wanting to do this for a very long time and with watching you!!!!!!!!! Just gave me that litter pouch I needed. So thanks Thomas from Canada.
+Thomas Saulnier That's awesome to hear, Thomas! Really appreciate you dropping the comment :)
how has it been going?
Wow that is a beautiful hammer you have so much talent.
absolutely Splendid my friend
A powerful video, I simply given this onto a colleague who was doing a bit of analysis on this. And he in truth bought me breakfast because I found it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the deal with! However yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love reading extra on this topic. If doable, as you become experience, would you mind updating your youtube channel with more details? It is extremely useful for me. Large thumb up for this youtube channel put up!
Love the Video Alec , awesome direction to go with your work too i hope you get a good turnout for you course!! keep on posting!!
+Jake Roscoe Thank you Sir! :) Alec
Just started blacksmithing I'm only 12 and I'm looking how to make my own hammers.I think this video will help a ton THANK YOU!😀
Today is the 11th day of December in the year of our Lord Jesus 2021... and I just found this channel a few days ago and I can guarantee you that he doesn't read the comments anymore! 😆 He has certainly come a long way and I'm so impressed with his enthusiasm and excitement for blacksmithing... and his skills of course! 12-11-2021
thanks for the post alec! Been waiting for this one :)
Well thank you for watching! I am glad you enjoyed it 😀
,damn, you have come a long way. Congrats
These older videos are great. Knives are great, but I wish I would've started off with tools and hinges and things like that. I'm sure the skills acquired there would've transferred to the blades more effectively than the blades to the tools.
Great video!! Hello from Miami
lovely tools, good vibe man. :)
oh ya buddy your freaking amazing. thank you.
Really nice vid The hammer turned out amazing kind regards Felix xD
+Lohnunternehmen Unteregger u. co. Thanks Felix! Was great having you here!
Alec! Could you please make a video showing us how to make the hammer eye punch that you used in the first minute of this video?? I would like this to be one of the first tools I make for myself! Thank you, Love watching this stuff.
Bravo Maestro!
There used to be a written tutorial somewhere for this on your website. I can’t find it anymore. Is it still available anywhere 🙏
Hey Alec would you be able to make a tutorial on the hammer eye punch I am very keen on trying this also will a truck axle be okay to make the hammer out of?
Hey Alec I'm about 5 months into blacksmithing and I'm learning more from you than anyone else! Thanks for the videos man! P.s. how much for a Alec made hammer lol
Hi Alex I am Landon young and i am 12 I have Ben blacksmithing for about a year you are really cool and I love your videos .Will you make a video on how to forge weld I tried but it did work like I wanted it to thankful
I have also been blacksmithing for about a year
You need too check out joey van der steeg he is pro in forge welding
Hello alec ! Amazing hammer, i wan't the same, the hammer in the french shop are not beautiful ahah. Good job 😉
Alec I love you videos!! You’ve inspired me to start blacksmithing. Would I be able to order a rounding hammer from you to get started?
Hey Alec my mate Darwin and I love your videos! Please keep on keeping on! He and I have build a clay lined charcoal forge a couple weeks ago ( air mattress pump for bellows) and we are successfully turning out bars of Damascus! We hope to move up to propane in the next month or so. We also make our own oak and mesquite charcoal. We do everything by hand on a two foot piece of high track we are using as a striking anvil. Our current project is a San Mai Bowie with mild and high carbon Damascus on the outside billets ( scrap mild and 1095) in a 72 layer twist pattern and the core billet is going to be a 112 layer opposite twist in 1095 and 15n20. How would I be able to send you photos
hey!! where do you get your steel from and are hammers hardened and tempered like other tools ? I love watching your videos !! thanks :seb
Does this have to be heat treated or is it strong enough being forged? Also, if making an axe, do you have to use flux to weld the halves in different styles? Thanks and God bless!!!!
awesome hammers wish I had one
I am a veteran that has tajen up Blacksmithing as my own form of therapy. Your video's had a lot to do with that. I would be honored to own and use one of yoyr hand forged hamners. In hooes to one day make you one as a thank you. How much would you chatge, and do you even make them for sell? Thank you for your time.. Your video's fill my day will much joy..Boaz
Hi Alec, How about your in person courses? Where can we sign in and know the schedules and its prices? Thank you so much, Ruben from Portugal =)
Hello love your videos as everyone does I would love to know how to purchase one of your rounding hammers let me know if that can happen thanks
hey alec can you please make a video about making a top fuller?
I would love one of these!!! How much are they Alex?
Is it the same if it's just you making them? Is there something you can do to hold the steel if you're doing the work solo at the moment?
Beautiful work. Do you sell your wonderful hammers.
hi !!! can you make a video on how to make your rouding tool for the faces of your hammer ;)
la forge montagnarde with another rounding hammer XD
They're available on ebay. I bought the identical tool a few years ago.
You can see him teaching people to make one in this video: kzhead.info/sun/bLmbmZaem4d6dZs/bejne.html
What is that thing y'all use to round the hammer face with?
Hey I'd love to do the course it's just a little out of my price range. Is it just an online course because $299 seems quite expensive just for videos. Not that I'm discrediting them. I love you're videos. I was just wondering if I had missed anything. Thanks
If forging a hammer without a striker or power hammer, would you suggest using handled punches like this, or a handheld slitting chisel Brent Bailey style?
Where do you buy your steel for forging
Do you sell stuff such as hammers??? I would love to have one of these
Is there a formula for the convex on rounded end of hammer
What's the differents between a rounding hammer and a usual other hammer?
Great Hammer! Do you sale them??
How do I buy one of these hammers from you?
Hey Alec! What grade of steel did you use for your hammer?
Just a quick question, Alec. What size billet would you need for a 6lb rounding hammer? Love the vids, and I'm absolutely getting your online course as soon as I can manage!
Hey Nomad! Thanks so much for asking!!! 2.5"x4.5" will get you a hair over six pounds :) let me know if you have any more questions!!
Thanks for responding so quickly!
@@AlecSteele hi alec great video definitely inspiring but do you need to heat treat your hammer?
What is the name of those tongs that you are using
Hey Alec would you be willing to sell a beginner set of tools? I love watching your videos and am tying to get into smithing myself! Being in an area and time where so few people even know what blacksmiths are I want to change that. Just let me know if you will be willing to sell some tools or if you ever make it to North Carolina please let me know, cheers
Hey what was the tool that you used to make the rounding face
does anyone know where to buy or a video on how to make a hammer eye punch or drift?
I love watching a team fourging. I wish my rail action hade a hardy hole
Alec, great video, the hammer turned out beautifully! Quick question - can you use roll forged 1084 steel (like from a railroad rail) to make hammers, hardy tools, etc.? If so, I assume heat treating would be required? Any suggestions? Thanks so much!
These are the questions worth asking
You can, but generally you want something more mid carbon steel. Higher carbon steels become more brittle as they work harden, and become more prone to chipping later in their life. It’s not a deal breaker, but definitely something you have to keep in mind.
Hi Alec! What kind of steel do you use to forge that hammer? Great vídeo!!
1045 it says in the top left corner
do you sell them hammers .and .where can i buy them?.. thank you
Hi Alec. Great informational video. What steel would you recommend for hammer making? en9 or something a bit harder? Also what stock section would need for a 2 and 3/4 to 3 pounder? cheers Tom
Hey Tom! En9 is a perfect steel to use! 100mm of 50mm round will make a 3lbs hammer or so! If you are ever curious about what size you need, simply look up a steel weight calculator and allow 1/4 pound for wastage to scale and grinding!
+Alec Steele thanks for the advice. Definitely going to attempt one soon.
Just wondering if you forged most of your tools yourself?
Where do you get your metal
how do you go about making such a hammer if you don't have someone else there help?
Why do you drive the cheeks out after punching instead of flattening the midsection before punching&drifting?
Hi Alex you have in made me change my life I'm knew to this and I'm starting my own black Smith shop and I'm doing things very slowly cause the money situation is very low right now and I tied to order a routing hamer off your web site but it said that you were sold out!.when Are you going to make more of them
Hey, if Felix can visit you and help, can I? I'm 15 and from Canada
Man I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really miss these videos.....................................
so do I
Can you show us how to forge a touch mark?
Alec, what material / grade of steel would you recommend for making hammers
+Dave Adams 1045 if in USA!
Cheers for the reply, I'm in the UK, S355?
+Dave Adams En8!
What tools would you consider to be the first tool (besides a forge) to buy or make?
anvil, hammer,and tongs
I need a striker. I really want to make a hammer, but I am at a loss for a striker and any material. And I know I could do it myself, but I'd rather not. Would a truck axle work as material for a small hammer?
a bit late, but yeah totally that'd work for a small 1-2 lb hammer
Why not predrill the hole?
Love to see how you work! What steel do you recommend to make a Hammer?

im just getting into forging, im hoping to most do damascus kitchen knives out of recycled steels. at this stage i have only managed to buy an anvil, my next purchase is going to be a gas forge. im curious to ask, what tools do you think are required for an amateur's forge to start with to atleast make some kitchen knives? also were you using one hammer to strike another hammer to shape the steel? my background is in metal fabrication and i was always told to never strike one hammer with another during my apprenticeship, tho i never really knew why, is there an urban myth behind this or something?
oh btw, thankyou for these videos im really enjoying learning the techniques you use :)
Mr jimjimjimmyjim Hey there I know I'm a bit late but I have some input. Kitchen knives, although they seem like the easiest place to start are by far one of the hardest. when people use kitchen knives, they expect to be able to simply use it, then throw it in a sink until it gets put through a dishwasher. if either of these things were done to a home made carbon steel blade it would be destroyed then and there. for most kitchen knives, stainless is essential to prevent rust stains petina and other things to affect the blade. the handle on the other hand would need to be finished in a few different ways in order to stand up to getting wet on a regular basis. plus the finish on the knives MUST be quite perfect as it needs to be able to be sanded to a high finish entirely. so just a word from the not so wise start somewhere other than kitchen knives. I would not even attempt making a functional carbon steel knife without a good belt grinder and some proper abrasives, hand sand paper. an angle grinder, saw or saws, hammer(s) tongs (if you are blacksmithing not stock removal) and alot of practice. files help for fine detail but I would not attempt to make a knife using no power tool except for your first couple to understand how to form knives and shape bevel tangs bolsters etc. anyways, I love the craft and encourage you to try to start! but some tools will cut out literally 10's of hours off each knife.
Mr jimjimjimmyjim Also I would suggest that since you are hitting that hammer with a cushion under it (hot steel) the steel will absorb the impact. if you hit a hammer with a hammer against an anvil you would very likely do damage to all three surfaces, so I could understand that.
do you make it rounded on both sides or just on one??????
Round on one and flat on the other.
Ahhhhhh I wish I could afford that course😭
+Eddie Ladson How can you afford not to have this course? :) Alec
+Alec Steele haha good point I have to save up. With the three month plan do I have to wait till its paid to view the course?
How much is a hammer like this?
Torbjorn uses a little metal wedge in the end. Is this essential?
Ser Browntown no. You need some kind of wedge(wood or metal or both) so that the handle sits in place. Because the hammer eye is shaped the way it is(like a taper) a wedge functions as a stop so that the hammer doesn’t go off the handle. Hope this helped
Do I need all these tools to make a hammer like this or can I just use another hammer an eye punch and a drift?
You can do it with those tools but it's not going to be a walk in the park, especially if you want those specific shapes. I would definitely get a hardy fuller and hammer fuller but you could grind in the rounding face with enough patience
How much ?
Hey brother, what made you decide to get into Blacksmithing?
+RoughHands Co. seeing some blacksmiths working at a fair age 11!!!
Alec Steele That's how the love begins! I grew up with the men of the family working in Steel Mills in Pittsburgh PA. My great grandfather and his grandfather and so on were blacksmiths in Wrocław Poland. I'm back where it all started. Thanks for replying man, keep up the great job!
I know we spoke about purchasing a hammer, but the more I look at it the more I'm wanting to forge my own. I feeling there's a since of pride in using something you've created with your own hands. So my question is this, from start to finish how many hours does it take?
You should be able to complete your first hammer in under an afternoon after completing and practicing the opening projects of my tool making curriculum available at beginblacksmithing.com - making your own tools rocks! You will love it!
+Alec Steele yes I've been wanted something like this. I truly can't wait. I have a 150# Trenton a 117# Peter Wright a Champion rivet forge and blower and a 4 1/2" Peter Wright leg vise. I must say, it's not a bad collection for a beginner.
What type of steel do you recommend for a hammer like this?
Do you harden the faces of the hammer or just leave them "soft".
Hey! I do harden the faces of my hammers :)
You don't just leave hammers soft. . . What planet do you come from? ;D
Cave of Skarzs Sorry...
'S all good. :P
Was that a hoof-rasp?!?!
You didn't take the scale off with the farriers rasp like Brian does.
Do you have 3 hands?
Oh
The gordan ramsey of forging
