Going to make a home made hammer too and a 2'' sander too. And what ever else comes to mind lol. I always was very good with my hands. I'm a carpenter by trade and have been welding for ever too. So I have been wanting to do this for a very long time and with watching you!!!!!!!!! Just gave me that litter pouch I needed. So thanks Thomas from Canada.

We hope to move up to propane in the next month or so. We also make our own oak and mesquite charcoal. We do everything by hand on a two foot piece of high track we are using as a striking anvil. Our current project is a San Mai Bowie with mild and high carbon Damascus on the outside billets ( scrap mild and 1095) in a 72 layer twist pattern and the core billet is going to be a 112 layer opposite twist in 1095 and 15n20. How would I be able to send you photos

    @tomcaygill9271@tomcaygill92718 жыл бұрын
    • Hey Tom! En9 is a perfect steel to use! 100mm of 50mm round will make a 3lbs hammer or so! If you are ever curious about what size you need, simply look up a steel weight calculator and allow 1/4 pound for wastage to scale and grinding!

  • im just getting into forging, im hoping to most do damascus kitchen knives out of recycled steels. at this stage i have only managed to buy an anvil, my next purchase is going to be a gas forge. im curious to ask, what tools do you think are required for an amateur's forge to start with to atleast make some kitchen knives? also were you using one hammer to strike another hammer to shape the steel? my background is in metal fabrication and i was always told to never strike one hammer with another during my apprenticeship, tho i never really knew why, is there an urban myth behind this or something?

    @mrjimjimjimmyjim9824@mrjimjimjimmyjim98247 жыл бұрын
    • oh btw, thankyou for these videos im really enjoying learning the techniques you use :)

      @mrjimjimjimmyjim9824@mrjimjimjimmyjim98247 жыл бұрын
    • Mr jimjimjimmyjim Hey there I know I'm a bit late but I have some input. Kitchen knives, although they seem like the easiest place to start are by far one of the hardest. when people use kitchen knives, they expect to be able to simply use it, then throw it in a sink until it gets put through a dishwasher. if either of these things were done to a home made carbon steel blade it would be destroyed then and there. for most kitchen knives, stainless is essential to prevent rust stains petina and other things to affect the blade. the handle on the other hand would need to be finished in a few different ways in order to stand up to getting wet on a regular basis. plus the finish on the knives MUST be quite perfect as it needs to be able to be sanded to a high finish entirely. so just a word from the not so wise start somewhere other than kitchen knives. I would not even attempt making a functional carbon steel knife without a good belt grinder and some proper abrasives, hand sand paper. an angle grinder, saw or saws, hammer(s) tongs (if you are blacksmithing not stock removal) and alot of practice. files help for fine detail but I would not attempt to make a knife using no power tool except for your first couple to understand how to form knives and shape bevel tangs bolsters etc. anyways, I love the craft and encourage you to try to start! but some tools will cut out literally 10's of hours off each knife.

      @randoprior4130@randoprior41306 жыл бұрын
    • Mr jimjimjimmyjim Also I would suggest that since you are hitting that hammer with a cushion under it (hot steel) the steel will absorb the impact. if you hit a hammer with a hammer against an anvil you would very likely do damage to all three surfaces, so I could understand that.

  • Torbjorn uses a little metal wedge in the end. Is this essential?

    @Thehowlingbrown@Thehowlingbrown4 жыл бұрын
    • Ser Browntown no. You need some kind of wedge(wood or metal or both) so that the handle sits in place. Because the hammer eye is shaped the way it is(like a taper) a wedge functions as a stop so that the hammer doesn’t go off the handle. Hope this helped
