  • Ah, I finally see my own mistakes. I often use a retractable leash but have switch to a standard leash now that I take longer walks with my dog. Hes reactive to others so I put him in a sit if his hackles rise. Im switching to the slip lead i use at the shelter for my dog so ill have more control and can give better direction. Its those owners that need the most direction that demonstrate your teachings the best. Now working on in-house barking/guarding.

As with Tom, Dean studied wolves in the wild and works on behavior modification, not dog training. That be your best bet! His seminars aren't cheap but they will be the best money you spend and the info you learn can be applied throughout your life with dogs.

  • Hi, I am trying to rehab an 18 mth old lab/pit male. He has been in shelters for at least the last 8 mos. I have worked with dogs for years. As well as other animals. BUT THIS BOY IS A SPECIAL CASE! He is aprox 90 lbs. (Recently fixed) and has the behavior of an 6-8 wk old puppy! He does not show much interest in any toys, he ONLY seems to know how to rough house when interacting with people. He has decided that REDIRECTION is how to get your attention. And when you go to take the shoe away for example, he then acts like a puppy, biting your hands, feet etc. Same with toys. Thow the ball he will go get it & bring it back- then 'attack' your hands/arms. He is NOT being aggressive. It is EXACTLY like a 9lb puppy would do EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT IT IS NOT AN OPTION TO TURN HIM ON HIS BACK AS YOU WOULD A PUP. He is huge. He also looks you straight in the face as he does this (or lunges at you) and I admit he has made me feel uncomfortable- even knowing that it isnt aggression. I do not know HOW TO TEACH BASIC RESPECT TO HIM. I am at a loss & I also know that my failure to get him lined out is going to lead to his being destroyed! I can let that happen! He is actually a very sweet & intelligent boy- he has just been extremely mishandled & is misunderstood! My friend swears by Thomas and suggested that I try to reach out for any advice that you might have... I THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP! Karen Fox Threadbear66@gmail.com
