  • The hardest hit forehand I've ever seen, a real sledgehammer. Great player, great sportsman and a very loveable guy. Wish you all the best always, Juan Martin. Thanks for all the pleasure you gave us tennis fans.

  • When I first saw del Potro I was very impressed, but had reservations concerning joint longevity. Del Potro’s longer levers (limbs) necessitate specialized muscle strengthening exercises to offset the greater stress on joint and lumbar regions. Most male tennis competitors have considerably shorter levers (limbs) than athletes of del Potro’s height.

  • I suppose it's only tragic because his father died and yes mishandled his son's money but as far as del Porto is concerned, he's doing ok. Still fairly well off, a GS champion and one of the most popular figures in the sport.

  • The title is real but it is negative. I would use different word and focus on the achievements of his carrier instead of the tragedy. The docu movie "How to become a champion" is a good example.

  • Always wondered why he didn’t switch to a single handed backhand. He had the talent and the power to at least try. He would have had all these months of recovery to practice and perfect the new backhand.

  • Doesnt cover the whole tragedy. His father died from a heart attack and shortly after it was discovered that he wasted away the fortune of his son in poor investments.

    • I've taken this story with a pinch of salt as it largely comes from a single journalist's claims in a fairly dubious looking Argentine tabloid, and pretty much any other mention of it elsewhere is a recycling job which cites the same article, which itself presents no sources or direct quotes on the matter. One moment they claim he is broke and bankrupt, in another they say he has $3million leftl, both of which can't be true. There's no verification to be found so, although there could be elements of truth in it, it could just as easily be a pack of lies for clickbait.

  • A brilliant player when not injured. I'll never forget the obliteration he did of Nadal in an indoor match in China I think. Just blasting monster forehands which Nadal could do nothing about. He had a great mental strength and never wavered. Very unlucky with injuries. I don't know about his father mishandling his money, I'm sure he is fine for money. Many prestigious tennis academy's wouls pay him very well as a consultant.

  • Your heading is misleading. There is no "tragic story". All you did was brag about his accomplishments. Almost all authors do this, unfortunately.

  • Tragic story?? This guy had a great, if injury shortened career, made millions of dollars, traveled all around the world many times, won the US Open in 2009, won the silver medal at the 2016 Olympics, and retired due to knee issues. I don't know what your definition of "tragic" is, but Juan Martin's life and career are certainly not tragic.
