Big Alaska Bull Moose Fighting -Start to Finish!
Left Hook finally returned to the valley and planted himself in 22's territory. We could see 22 a half mile away, bedded. He got up and started his slow/deliberate walk, grunting the whole way, audible across the valley despite the raging creek waters. He turned and headed up toward us, we knew Left Hook was somewhere in the hemlocks after a cow, but were waiting in a clearing in case he came out again. 22 started wagging from downhill, and then from the hemlocks came Left Hook, also wagging. Left Hook stopped to rake, and we knew this could erupt.
After jockeying for (SAFE) positioning, we were able to capture this amazing footage from two slightly different angles. It's the kind of thing one tends to watch a few times to appreciate the power and nuances as these massive animals go at it. The fur does fly. Enjoy!

Those dudes are HUGE! I was expecting the hall monitor to yell-"Hey you two...break it up!"
Yeah, typical of rumbling guys, as IF they'd listen! haha. Thanks for watching! And yes, they are massive!!!
I've never hunted bullwinkles so all I know is what I've seen from videos, but...these guys may be the biggest I've ever seen on video!!! I might have to use a gun vs my Bowie knife like I do with "just" 800lb elk 😉
@@dansherwood9851 Riiiight: You don't want to bring a knife to a moose fight!
Actually I don't think I want to attend a moose rumble. My 407" elk was as big as I want to mess with. Bent the blade on my knife, had to resort to sharp stick to the eye...😉 Or a 270wsm.
@@dansherwood9851 You're right. Stick to elk. And leave the moose and grizzlies alone!
I know it's crazy... I just can't believe both aren't missing their eyeballs 20 seconds into the fight!
It is amazing that despite having seen/filmed several fights, we have not witnessed an injury other than a couple of lamenesses. There are bulls who had eye injuries, but we never saw it happen. Truly amazing that they can avoid such damage. Thanks for the comment!
they have evolved to suffer minimal damage@@MooseManNaturePhotos

The beginning was like an old western when they are walking out to the main getting ready. Very cool.
Yes that's it! John Wayne coming down Main street for a gunfight. We were so lucky to be able to follow the one bull into the arena and glad that the terrain opened up to allow us to film it all. Usually they're in the trees where we can't get to them. Thanks!
Exactly what I was gonna say. It was even in slow motion. All that was missing is a tumbleweed and a woman clutching her pearls😆

What's incredible is that they so carefully choreographed their fight, and splined their massive and lethal antlers in such a way as neither of them drew blood on the other in spite of the fact each appeared to weigh in at close to a ton each!

You are so right. t never ceases to amaze us how few serious injuries occur with these fights. We've witnessed several, known for a couple of injuries (eye, leg) but nothing that took a life. (We did not witness the tragic fight this year between Grumpy and the mystery bull, and are glad for that.) Want to keep ti that way! Meanwhile, Swagger lives, so he survived his leg injury, and Left Hook may be blind or partially so at least in one eye, but is otherwise thriving. Phew! Thanks for the comment!
i think the one on the left is bigger and probably older
@@davidburns3480 He is. Older. Wiser. WIDER. And we were surprised by the younger bull's moxie to take him on and even go at him from downhill. Impressive!

Thank you for watching, Philip. Yes, we got lucky for this one for sure! Amazing how much more tactical these fights are than bighorn or even elk fights
Yes, they are. Interesting observation. I guess there's a lot at stake here. Death, being one. Thanks for the comment!
Mooseman, how many times have you seen where two bulls got locked yogether and ended up dead?
I've read that given the amount of energy it takes for these big boys to fight and the serious damage they can do to each other, such fights are usually over pretty quickly with one bowing out rather than taking it to an extreme. Usually no one is badly hurt. This proves the theory. Aren't they absolutely magnificent?
It's a test of strength not a death fight
It's true, they really aren't out to kill one another, just best the other. It's all about mating rights. That is the only reason they fight. It's rare that death occurs. There can be lockups that will kill both bulls but that's not their intent; that's a freak thing. And the bull that spins out or calls uncle is allowed to leave without a chase. It is respected. Sometimes they are more civilized than humans. Thanks very much for the comment, you're so very right, Cindy!
@@MooseManNaturePhotos heh I suppose it's a moose version of them playing rock paper scissors with each other
@@Roger__Wilco 🤣 Only just a TAD more physical!

I was glad to see them both walk away and live to fight another day. It looks to me like there is plenty of land out there for both of them to have their very own territory without a fight to the finish. They really are magnificent creatures! I love watching the video of the man who takes his trash out to the shed and when he turns around a HUGE moose is walking toward him. He immediately goes back in the shed and shuts the door and the moose stands there and waits for him to come out for just a few minutes and then goes on about his business. I have watched that video a dozen or more times.
They usually do walk away, thankfully Maryann, otherwise I'd not want to film a fight! And while bulls do tend to keep to a particular area, t's not about territory they fight over, it's the cows. So wherever the cows go, the bulls want to be. In this instance the younger bull had some cows in the older bull's area, because the older bull had wandered another mile and some away for other cows. It gets crazy out there. And I saw that video too, of the guy and the shed. Funny stuff! Thanks for watching!!
Now I gotta see the shed video
Amazing! And the beauty of the landscape! The colors!

"Bro that human is watching, let's look like we're fighting."
Yeah, they over acted then! They were really fighting. But I first thought they were going to hug it out.
They pause like...we don't have to do this, ya know?....but they cant help their instincts❤
I know I thought they were going to hug it out but they went for it and that kind of surprised us. What's interesting about bull moose is that if at that moment one decided to opt out, all he'd have to do is whine submission and turn away. That's considered a win for the other bull. They have a code, apparently. Thanks for watching and for the comment, Karen!

I was Elk hunting in the panhandle of Idaho, on a finger, glassing below and i heard twigs and brush cracking behind me. I slowly looked over my shoulder and there stood a moose much like in this video. He seemed dark, huge paddles, seemed to rival a large horse in size. I turned around a bit more and our eyes met. We stared at each other for about 10 seconds. Suddenly the awkward silence was broken. The Moose said to me: Get the Phuck out of here. I said ok.

Absolutely beautiful, a breathtaking example of how the strongest survive in the bare nature and unforgiving elements. Honestly makes you appreciate what our ancestors were once challenged with as they also carved out their territory. Now we have the big cities and roving gang members, once again, only the strongest survive, I hope we can once again stand our ground strong and proud.
Well said, Danny. The genetically strong, not just a physical trait. The wise ones survive. We have been fortunate enough to follow some of these animals for several years and it's not just brawn that carries the genetics forward. I can't imagine how our ancestors carved out a life in such unforgiving climates and lands but they did. Just as these animals do, I guess. But now, with the urban sprawl, it's a matter of who has the bigger gun. Not quite what nature intended!
So very true brother, I've been in some very rugged and unforgiving country In my 68 years, and for some reason I always thought about the early settlers and humans who came before me in the very same spot I was standing. As an ex-veteran and many life experiences from one end of the spectrum to the other, reading the territory and quietly listening to your senses will bring you much life sustaining wisdom. Humans are very dangerous animals when you boil it right now, they can act without any discernment or forethought. The Truly dangerous ones function primarily on emotions, If you are able to quiet yourself and psychologically secure your wisdom In your actions, that in and of itself is beyond Powerfully strong and will always put you ahead of the game. Sometimes it's not the biggest gun brother, a well-placed 22. Can be life altering. Always keep your personal protection tools on you at all times, stay vigilant, be discernible in your hesitation, sometimes hesitation will ruin your day. Stay blessed brother, and may this season of Christmas warm your heart knowing someone up above provided an eternal gift we can never repay. Danny in Texas

Great photography, and right there in our backyard (sort of). Having just been 'up there' today to look around and walking off trail makes one realize how adept these guys are at getting around in the first place, not to mention fighting, which includes backward and forward movements. We little humans would have broken a leg in that uneven terrain in no time, if we had to maneuver without eyes fixed to the ground.
Thank you A! And sorry I didn't see this comment until now. Yes, getting around that terrain with only 2 legs/feet is difficult. The muskeg especially. All our focus is on our feet and keeping our gear from peril. I envy the grace of these moose to cover the ground the way they do. They look like they should be tromping and stumbling but they instead look more like ballet dancers.

Bonus! Sangat menyenangkan bagi kami untuk memfilmkan semuanya! (I hope that translated right!)
That pre-fight walk up was some serious swagger.
Such beautiful creatures! I don't know what the smaller one was thinking upon seeing the size of the older one. Such massive antlers and huge beasts!
Sometimes size flies out the window when hormones are raging Ryan. It was a good fight though! They really went at it! Thanks for being here and for the comment!
@@MooseManNaturePhotosl
I'm pretty sure the smaller bull - the loser - is older, just past his prime.
@@davegingrich8642 Actually he's younger. The wide racked bull is older. The younger bull actually became dominant this past rut. The older bull we believe we lost to winter last year. Thanks for the comment and for subscribing!
the raw crackling sound of the huge antlers smashing each other is so primal. and dont forget, these massive deer species are over 7 feet tall at the shoulder.....
These are massive and powerful animals, drunk on hormones. Sally, bar the door!
Average is 6 feet...just googled.
Used to see this all the time when we lived in Alaska. Boom. Love to have you on my wall ❤️
If you close your eyes and listen it sounds like a construction site with a bunch of carpenters handling wood.
It pretty much does. Ahhhh. The soothing sounds of a construction site! Now, open your eyes and run for your life! 😁
@@MooseManNaturePhotos hahaha 🤣
Awesome,
Thanks, it was pretty epic to be able to film it!
I watched this again. Awesome footage. 22 used the terrain to his advantage got high ground a couple times. Hopefully both these awesome bulls are back this fall. LH needs a rematch.
Yes, despite 22, the wise old man, gaining high ground, LH had the audacity to go for an uphill push! We were impressed (if not slackjawed). We sure hope 22 returns and that LH shows up for the party too, and they do rematch AND that we're there in a beautiful clearing with front row center views to film it all in 4K slo mo! (We can dream, right?)😁🤞
@@MooseManNaturePhotos That would be AWESOME. 😎
Two magnificent beasts that god created Nature had nothing to do with it 👍
Awesome comment! Spot on!!
B.S.Keep your stupid religion and fairy tail myths to yourself.Nature is my God, yours never existed.
It’s awesome to see Deer Elk Moose & Caribou fighting
It is! Anything that grows weapons every year is pretty awesome anyway, and watching them use them? Heart pounding. Not easy to film but we got lucky here!
Incredible!!! That slow swagger, and then BAM it's all out war between them! Truly a hold your breath few moments!! They are magnificent, I have to wonder if you can feel the ground rumbling during their battle? WOW, just WOW!
In the past we have indeed felt the tundra shake to the rumble of two behemoths going at it. Just amazing. We never know if it's actually going to end up in a brawl; at times even these two seemed more like they were going to spar than fight. But this year Left Hook has come to his own and wanted all in. It's unnerving stuff to film because of safety coming first, but we had nice big trees to dash into for cover if need be. Glad you're on board, Kat!
WOW! That would be something to see!
You just did! Ha. Kidding, I know what you mean. It gets the heart pounding for sure. Glad we're on tripods! Hard to hold a camera steady enough to capture it otherwise.
Incredible film footage. Amazing the strength in those beautiful, massive Animals and their Antlers not breaking off. 👍🏻
Thank you so much, we got lucky but we also really worked to get this. What made it awesome was that they chose a rather open arena for this battle. That's unusual. We really thought there would be pieces of antlers lying around after this one but noooo. They were both intact after the fight. Thankfully! They are gorgeous, and massive. You're so right.
@@MooseManNaturePhotos At first I thought to one on the left won the thing, he appeared younger stronger but had some shoulder punctures….! ? Thanks again…..not often we see as clearly a big battle of those giants !
@@juliojames5986 Appreciate the compliment, thanks. Actually, nobody was punctured, just a little scuffed up here. It's amazing really that in all the fights we've seen/filmed we have not seen any life threatening injuries. Thanks for watching!
Two years ago as I was driving home one night just before dark a big bull ran out of tge woods in front of me. He was still all sweaty and had one side of his rack broken off. He was body wise the biggest bull I've seen alive. I'd sure wish I could of seen the massive bull He was fighting with. 😊 I live and own property right in the thick of it all. I'm very fortunate to live where I do.
The way they were walking before the fight was hilarious, like they drank a ton of liquor. 😅😂
That's how they challenge each other 🤗!
That was balls! Can't believe you got close enough to record the sound of those antlers smashing. Just awesome! Thanks 🙏
You're welcome and thank you! We got really lucky that day for sure!! Heart pounding stuff. Safe distance with trees always. Gotta have a solid tree (or several!) close by. Thanks for watching!

I was waiting for the lighter guy to pull out a sword and thrust it into the heart of his rival.
He left it at home that day...
Thanks for Video
Thanks for watching!
Amazing!! Great color and action!!
Thanks, very tough to film a fight, we got lucky!
What a Word se live in❤️
Definitely not in no hurry, 1 of them is like ok bro let's just do this, later we'll meet up and eat together. 😄 Such wonderful photography.
Sorry, Black, I missed this comment somehow! Thanks for that. And yes, some time after this battle they did meet back up to have a bite together. Ha! Thanks very much for the comment!
These guys are clearly bros.
Hard to say, but they sure were well matched! Thanks for the comment.
@@MooseManNaturePhotos there also seemed to be a level of respect paid to each other where they locked antlers first instead of poking each others' eyes out with their antlers when they could. Thank you for the video!
@@matthewforster2661 Yes, they do seem to show respect, it's odd and cool at the same time. There are a lot of eye injuries out there but that's to be expected, a very vulnerable body part for sure. Thanks for the comment!
Powerful animals
Yes, sort of like two small locomotive engines.
Amazing. They must be pretty strong to walk around with those huge horns. They got locked down pretty good at 4:00.
Yes, sometimes the antlers get so locked that both bulls die of exhaustion and stress. At least they shed them every year after the rut is over. They can at least go around in the winter without all that extra weight on their heads. Until the next summer, of course. The amazing cycle of antlered animals. Thanks for the comment.

@@MooseManNaturePhotos Wow that's strange and interesting. Thank you too.
Magnificent. Thank you guys. You do great work.

What a beautiful landscape!
It truly is, Alaska is just gorgeous. Thanks for watching!
And it's all in my back yard. I'm so blessed to have bought land and building my house on it!
