  • I love the actress who was casted for the marie Antoinette role. The dauphin is very underserved tho, he speaks two lines in the whole movie. In real life he didn’t accept her but he was also a kind gentle man, so that would have been a very interesting dinamic for the character

    • Yes! For a character who is used in the movie as the only royal family member who is decent to Jeanne, he remains a terribly underdeveloped character.

  • Yep, very much agree to all of this, as we have discussed already! I think one cannot understate how the king was mesmerized by Jeanne's beauty. She was the Marylin Monroe of her time. Both in beauty and controversy.

    @Lessareve@Lessareve5 ай бұрын
    • Yes! I have not thought of that yet but now as you say it, the Marylin comparison is spot on!

  • As others pointed out - Maiwenn as Madame du Barry is a disaster. Not just because of her utter lack of beauty and youth - she comes off as downright coarse. In her introduction scene you are meant to be overwhelmed by her beauty but she comes off like a terrifying hag instead. As Hanculka13 says this is not about not casting actresses of not perfect beauty, but about casting someone who can embody the historical figure. Its like casting Woody Allen as Muhammad Ali...

  • If this was movie about normal couple then I would be glad to see that ordinary, older woman plays the lead role. But it's about du Barry. And sorry Maiwen but you are literally everything but young and exceptionally beautiful which is like... the selling point of madame du Barry? I'm pretty sure that the real king was not checking her out for her education :D

    @Hanculka13@Hanculka135 ай бұрын
    • Exactly! Sorry if it is rude to say this but Maiwenn is nowhere near pretty enough for this role. Even if you are an actor-director, you can't play the main role in the movie you direct in every single case. Sometimes you don't fit that role. It's as if Mel Gibson wanted to play the main role in Hacksaw Ridge instead of giving it to Andrew Garfield 😄 At a point he became too old to play the main roles in his films, so he stopped that. Maiwenn obviously doesn't realize the same thing. I also always support the casting of not young (khm, Ridley Scott....) and not exceptionally beautiful actresses, who are usually put in the background in Hollywood, sadly, but there are cases such as this when you can't cast anyone but a young beautiful woman. At the beginning, Jeanne was shown with a book in her hand so much that I thought the movie would obviously play into the "clever poor girl enchants the rich guy" trope, but they didn't even manage to do that, there is not a single dialogue between them that would show how these two bond exactly.

    • I disagree , beauty is in the eye and i think maiwenn is mesmerising, intriguing and oozes sexual attraction. Maybe thats a 🇬🇧 perspective

    • @patterdale54 I see that Maiwenn has those special, very unconventional, looks that many will find unattractive and several people will find very attractive. But the point is that du Barry was a very CONVENTIONAL beauty of the time, who was the literal beauty standard, who everyone found beautiful and very attractive and gorgeous. A doll-faced perfect blondie. She was the Marilyn Monroe of her time. Maiwenn is anything but the Marylin Monroe of our times.

    • @@Lily1127channel i get your point, but i guess everything changes over time, i found watching an African lady playing Anne Boleyn hard to find authentic, not racism but then i guess more drama than historical authenticity.

    • No 25 was not 40 😀 Biology was still biology and a 25 year old was still young looking and without wrinkles. Especially that in that era women knew they had to avoid the sun no matter what (and the UV was not as harmful to the skin as it is today) and not lay in the sun to get fashionably tanned as it is today.

  • While they have given it some freedoms with historical accuracy, it was wonderful. I thought Johnny was perfect choice for the king. He was funny and playful with her, but austere and commanding as he was taught to be when he was king. Hu pulled it off very well.

  • I am a movie make-up and hair designer. This woman looks nothing like Du-barry and where most of the time the chosen stars look nothing like their parts, this is awful. A rugged face ,large lips and not even a blonde wig!!! Also Depp never learns his lines and gets his people tell him his lines in his ears.

    • @@Exor840 Look, I really don't care about Depp and Heard's relationship and their private lives. Private is called private for a reason. So I don't care about it, and I don't follow the latest news and verdicts about them. But obviously I am not living under a rock so I saw many comments on the internet about their whole fight. I know that while Depp was kinda cleared in the trial, but to me it still seems like a controversy because there are many people who take Depp's side and also many who still hate him and think him bad. He is still pretty much canceled in Hollywood. Though it is also said that that is mainly because it is horrible to work with him, he behaves horrible on set, often high or drunk, whatever. I really don't care, but I do think, that there are still controversies about him in public opinions.
