    • the tech and ride quality (today's cars have air suspension, this doesn't) may not be on par with today's cars, but the materials and build quality far ourclasses any of today's bently or S class, and on par, if not even better than rolls royce. For a car that was introduced in the 90s to have this level of comfort and refinenent without an air suspension is extremely impressive. Imagine if toyota made a modernized version of this car right now, it will outclass the phantom in every way.

  • Hello Doug! Your next mission, should you choose to accept it, is to track down the similarly rare and unusual Nissan President. Followed by another limousine from Toyota, the strangely named Crown Majesta. Both are pretty rare even in their native Japan, and finding examples of either outside Japan will test your detective skills seriously. :) Oh, and another Japanese limo you can have fun tracking down is the Mitsubishi Dignity. Yes, it's actually called that. It's Mitsubishi's attempt to build a Japanese S-Class with extra fruit. Just below it in the model range is another limo, the Proudia (Mitsubishi have a track record of devising weird names for their cars). I suspect they'll all provide you with quirks and features overload if you ever find any to review. :D

Makes sense and even more when you realize that your focus can remain on the road while checking the sides and with wider angles. Had a 68 Mazda Familia Rotary while at Sophia University in Tokyo back in 1972. Manually adjusting the mirrors was a pain but that’s where you want them to be when driving fast and furious through the narrow streets of Tokyo and you’re 19.

  • This, right there, is my dream car. In dark blue, or should I say 'lake Mashū' blue - a color named after the clearest lake in the world. Black is by far the most common, but there's also metallic grey (two actually: one lighter and one darker) and metallic blue (same, one lighter, one darker). The wool has several advantages over leather: it doesn't squeak, it's warmer in winter and cooler in summer (which also helps with perspiration). There is a leather 'option' but it's actually less luxurious, and intended for livery/limousine service - it's easier to clean, therefore more convenient, but certainly not more luxurious. The V12 was indeed intended to be smooth and quiet, hence the relatively low power output - but, hey, this is definitely not a sports car. :) That engine is sick, though, and offer close 500 Nm of torque, with as much as 400 Nm available very low (1,200 RPM). Also worth noting: while the exterior of the car only has "Century" branding (not a single reference to Toyota), there's actually a few place *inside the car* where Toyota is mentioned (eg. the head unit). The Gothic script also carries a "high end" significance in Japan. Seiko also uses a Gothic script for their top of the line Grand Seiko brand.

  • For those who don’t know, Japan classifies cars by how wide they are, from mirror to mirror. The wider the car, the more you have to pay to own it. So most manufacturers would put their mirrors on the fenders instead of the doors to keep the car as narrow as possible. The idea of a V12 in a Japanese car blows my mind, as another thing they tax is the engine size, which is why you find 4 cylinder cars to be so common in Japan. Curiously, cars with a displacement below a certain amount can be driven by people under 18, which is the age required to get a driver’s license. It’s very complicated, and I can see why most people just take public transportation instead. If you want to know why, it’s because Japan is nothing but a collection of small islands, yet houses as many people as most countries twice its size. At one point, Japan was encapsulated by a dome of smog, kind of like LA was in the 70s.

  • I live in Japan so I can give you some interesting insights on those front hood mirrors. Since the century is a car that is 99% driven by chauffeurs, that is probably the reason for the front mirrors, as they are standard on all Japanese taxis (they are preferred because they are easier to see without turning your head and hide the blindspots better like you said). Even to this day, those hood mirrors are standard on brand new Japanese taxis, and there was actually a big backlash on the newest taxi model, the Toyota JPN TAXI (another unique JDM car) because toyota thought it would be uneccessary to add those mirrors, but drivers were so passionate about them that Toyota relented and made them standard.

Do you have a KZhead car channel? Personally, I would be interested in your point of view since you are an enthusiast and can share some of your vast knowledge. I'm sure you could add something to the community, and possibly pick up some revenue if your channel takes off.
