The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, is holding public hearings from 19 to 26 February 2024 on the request for an advisory opinion regarding the Legal Consequences arising from the Policies and Practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem. These hearings are taking place at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the seat of the Court, under the presidency of Judge Nawaf Salam, President of the Court. In this session, we heard from South Africa, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, and Belgium.

It's good other countries are standing up to openly denounce these war crimes, i don't object that by any means. 🇿🇦🇿🇦 However, i think it still falls short. And it's unfortunately, not enough. The ICJ rulings are binding, and yet, it lacks enforcement power. If the ICJ were to order Israel to stop military operations in Gaza, as binding as that may be, how is it going to "force" Israel to stop? Then, if the ruling is not "implemented", the case resorts to the Security Coucil to "decide upon preemtive measures" and this is where the case stagnates, because we know the U.S is Israel's greatest ally and will use "right of veto". The only "consequence" this will have in the eyes of politicians is the growing lack of credibility in these organizations, that might affect their political campaigns, not the lives lost and suffering of millions. Ultimately, in the ICJ this is a bureaucratic process that can take months or years, and Israel only has to delay the ruling so Palestinians die of famine in the meantime. Famine and death are happening now. And if the ICJ were going to emit a ruling, for Israel this is basically: "Oh, yeah? Make me." International law is weak. And the system upon which these international organizations operate, is designed to favor the hegemony of certain States.
The Court findings should actually be enforced by the States of the world themselves - i.e., the implementation of ICJ findings normally would be developed by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which would give the nations a guideline on how to proceed. However, as you probably will have observed yourself, the UNSC is compromised due to its member USA, which wields its veto against any humane intervention and makes effective "formally correct" action impossible - whilst supporting Israel in its goal to exterminate the Palestinian people 😢 The States speaking up must overcome their qualms and join forces to ACT NOW, irrespective of fresh UN resolutions or no (I say there would be enough evidence AND rulings, along with clear instructions in div. Conventions, but I'm just a normal citizen with a conscience, but no knowledge of Law etc. ...). Stop sending ANYTHING to Israel NOW. Shun Israel in all aspects of life NOW: sports, culture, education. INCREASE funding for humanitarian aid, notably for UNRWA, NOW. It's crucial for the survival for the people in Gaza!!

Those who gave orders to mass attrocities, collective punishement and incitement to wage a genocidal warfare of scorched earth tactics against an ethnic group as a whole without distinguishing between combatant and non-combatant and by systemic disrespect of humanitarian law and by systemic destruction of healthcare, denying life saving aid and using starvation as a weapon of war. It is a disgrace to have ICC being silent and let it happen without issuing a single order or clear warning to those who are committing these grave breaches and violations. And to issue an clear order to bring to Justice those who are: Aiding and Abetting the Israeli Government and the IDF Forces by endorsement and support by diplomatic cover for this warfare Those who are conspiring with the Israeli government by defunding humanitarian Organisations which try to give life saving aid and medical treatment for wounded and displaced starving civilian in a warzone. It is unacceptable how ICC could just stay silent in the time, when Justice by the ICC would be most needed, to take action. Justice and International law must be upheld and be applied, silence is not an option! UN-Bodies, UNRWA, UNHCR, WHO, UNICEF, the Red Cresent and International Red cross, Doctors without borders and others are under a real threat, to become useless, obsolete where these life saving humanitarian Organisations couldn't fullfill there mandates or life saving missions to serve civilians in a warzone. It is outrageous not having ICC to upheld international law and haven't ordered some guardrails to give humanitarian and medical teams some judicial cover for their life-saving work. It is really a disgrace

So while each obviously takes turns to put their case forward (duh), Israel doesn't feel that it needs to. In their statement this week at the Security Council meeting, the Israeli ambassador basically called the UN and the 13/15 countries who voted for a ceasefire terrorists... So, yeah, Israeli exceptionalism at its finest 🙄
