New Range Rover Velar review: Better than the Germans?

Meet the new Range Rover Velar!
It’s a step down from the full-blown Range Rover, and Mat’s about to find out if it’s worth the £54,000 starting price.
When it comes to the design, there are several updates over the previous edition. Around the back, the Land Rover badge has been replaced by big Range Rover lettering across the back. There are also new 3D effect taillights, as well as an updated bumper. Along the side, you’ll find a choice of new alloy designs, and on this car we have the 2-tone effect design thanks to the black roof. Up top, there are a couple of new design elements, including new headlights, a new grille, and an updated bumper.
Step inside, and there’s been a big change with the centre console. Gone is the second screen and physical climate control buttons - they’ve all been removed and that functionality added to the infotainment system. In their place… Is nothing! All you’ll find is a large gear selector surrounded by silver plastic.
When it comes to the actual infotainment screen, it’s been updated, but it’s not the most intuitive system. There are buttons on the steering wheel to manage the digital dials, but the menu can be a bit convoluted. Thankfully though the general design of the interior is nice, with lots of soft-touch materials throughout.
When it comes to engines, there are a couple to choose from. If you want a diesel you can choose either a 2-litre turbo or a 3-litre with 200hp or 300hp respectively, and if you just want petrol there’s a 2-litre turbo or a 3-litre six-cylinder with 250hp and 400hp. All these cars come with an 8-speed automatic and four-wheel drive.
There’s also a hybrid available, which comes with a 2-litre turbo petrol and an electric motor that can put down 400hp.
So what do you think, is it worth the £54,000 price tag? Especially when you consider this can rise to almost £80,000 for the top-of-the-range model?! You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Something that brings money back to your pocket, real estate, stocks, whatever can bring back value to their bank account rather than draining it. While not everything needs to be a button or dial, stuff like aircon, defogging, volume absolutely should be. Stuff that is used frequently should not be buried in a touch screen when it is clearly not safe for a driver to take their eyes off the road to find and use it.

In the cold, the handles don't pop out unless you use the remote, and even then some of them don't open, or close.... Low profile tires make a very uncomfortable ride, and usual electrical faults from LR. Depreciation has also been hell. Bought 2nd hand for £44K, 2 years later, 26K. USB devices don't always work, and sometimes, there is a huge delay before the radio, or music starts playing (depending on what mood the car is in!!). DAB signal is terrible compared to other cars in the area. And as covered in the video, you are quite low down to what would expect from such big car and the front pillars obscure your view when turning.

    • The thing is with all cars, 90% of features work as learned behavior. If you own the car and you use a feature more than a couple of times, you know exactly how to operate it. Therefore there is a lot on inconsistency between reviews of other cars which have been reviewed much more often or used as long term cars where journalists are much more familiar with how they work.

      @jamiebray4205@jamiebray42054 ай бұрын
    • The review also hasn't been tested correctly. You can use the talk button on your steering wheel and ask it to do something for example set temperature to 20 and it will adjust the temperature for you therefore you don't need to use the screen. If you want to touch the screen you can just slide it up and down depending on how hot or cold you want it. There is also a short cut button on the steering wheel you can set for example heated seats. It's extremely easy to use and the effect of no buttons has been completely over exaggerated !

I think the only way it becomes 450 liters is if you get the add on optional non run flat tires and decide to get the full size spare tire. Most X3's will get the full trunk space (550 liters) since runflats come standard.

The old one was cumbersome and slow (something the new gen does not seem to improve on) but it was way nicer and definitely classier, which let's face it, RR is all about class. So much so, that had I been able to actually afford one, that could well end up being a dealbreaker for me. Just has that 90s budget car vibe to me.,

Thank god for the warranty, but my car was not even that high mileage, not to mention that it was driven mostly on long trips with my family and well maintained. They also have issues on almost all of their engines, mine is 3.0 SDV6, but the petrol ones have issues too. I think that only the 4.4l Diesel is good, but I'm not sure if it's even still on sale.

    @markknight8560@markknight85604 ай бұрын
    • That’s incorrect. What you have described will only place the ZF gearbox into sport mode whereby it will hang on to the gear longer before changing up. It will not sharpen the throttle response, steering or suspension setup. For all these three, it’s necessary to use the touchscreen. Trust me, when you’re on a fast country road and want to quickly change the settings to blast past the infamous Nissan Micra or Tesco truck limited to 40mph for your safety (!), you really don’t want to be faffing about with a touchscreen and embedded menus. The original Velar was conceived by Gerry McGovern back when JLR and TATA were cash rich - design and engineering trumped the accountants. Things are very different now. This facelift is a thinly veiled attempt at rampant cost cutting to increase the profit margin on each car sold. If you still desire a brand new Velar and have the budget, the right configuration is the 3.0 diesel six cylinder with air suspension with those 21” wheels and privacy glass. These cars look very average when poorly configured but drop-dead gorgeous if the right specification is selected. I know. I have one and she is wonderful, really she is.
