Maul was terrified because he knew Qui Gon was spending his skill points in the meditation circle.

Maybe the games left me jaded. But I feel like Cal would whoop Maul's ass two ways to Sunday.
speaking of videogames, in swtor, isn't Qui-Gon's meditation stance and Maul's pacing the animations used for healing outside of combat?

I wonder if Qui-Gon knew he was going to die and he was getting ready to become one with the force.
I’m not sure if he knew and was ready, or had just reached a point where he was just always ready. We saw him clash with the council, but we also saw the council and order being played for fools throughout the prequels. I get the impression that’s because they were already tools of the republic first and tools of the force second. Qui-Gon ignored the council when instinct told him to, or found a way to bend the rules, following the force.
I reckon you've hit the nail on the head there.
Yes, probably. Qui-Gon, and Obi Wan knew how to do this.
Just what I was thinking, I believe he knew.

There is. He has appearances sprinkled throughout the Clone Wars cartoon series and they got Liam Neeson to come in and voice his lines too! There is also a young adult series of books with Qui Gon and Kenobi in their early adventures.

@@Halloweendm soo maul definately had nothing to fear from him.
In Som of Dathomir Mail whooped Grievious’s metal behind.
Palpatine himself feared Qui-Gon Jinn. He knew that Qui-Gon was ahead of the Jedi Council. Qui-Gon was more developed and tune within the force. He knew what had to be done. Unlike the jedi council, who were weak and, quite frankly, easily played. If Qui-Gon was part of the council, maybe Palpatine wouldn't succeed. As for Maul, if he fought a Qui-Gon in his prime, he would have lost. Qui-Gon was arguably the greatest jedi ever (second is Luke).
Palpatine is not stupid. Jedi Council does respect Qui Gon Jinn's opinion for many reasons and wanted him on the Jedi Council, so they can ask more questions. Jedi Council and Qui Gon Jinn disagree each other but respected each other and listen to each other as well.
@DeathScepter Never said Palpatine was stupid. And Qui-Gon was never asked to be on the council. The reason being was because of his challenging behaviour. Qui-Gon was defiant at times, albeit respectfully.

This scene stuck with me after seeing TPM in 1999 because it is a great metaphor for the different approaches to life. We can seethe and rage at life’s unexpected interruptions and frustrations like Maul does, pacing back and forth and futility probing at the blast shields, or we can accept that which is beyond our control and keep centered, like Qui Gon. Both die shortly after the scene which adds to the metaphor, that we will all die but we can choose to live in discontent and bitterness like Maul or harmony and purpose like Qui Gon.
Actually... (spoilers) Watch the Clone Wars TV show to find out how Maul REALLY dies...
Qui Gon is everything a true Jedi should be 🙏 his mind is set on nothing but the will of the Force, for good or bad. He doesnt care for politics or being a warrior/soldier. His very existence is based on being aligned fully to the Force. If the Jedi order were like him, Palpatine would likely have never risen to (unlimited) power...
No! it's his padawan Obi Wan that exemplified the greatest balance between alignment with the force and duty to humanity. Everyone knows Obi Wan was the greatest example of a Jedi.
@@johncraftenworth7847 Well, I suppose that's really the thing, then. Obi Wan really was the quintessential Jedi, as the Jedi are people that follow a code. They aren't an extension of the Force, not really. Bastions of the light, certainly, but not pawns of the Force. Qui Gon, on the other hand, was that true extension of the Force. He gave himself fully over to the Force, and the Force granted him the ability to live on consciously in it after his body died. I'm sure over the centuries there were many Jedi scholars that argued that what Qui Gon achieved, and how he embodied the will of the Force, was really how the Jedi should have been, but ultimately, what Obi Wan exemplified was what the Jedi chose to be.
no way qui gon wasn't that snobby he taught Yoda, yoda taught Obi Wan, Obi Wan taught Anakin, the force ghost skill. bc qui gon love and respect all these guys!! @@AlindBack
This is the first time I have heard someone describe/detail Qui Gon in a way that makes me appreciate him in a way. Most just mention how Qui Gon is amazing and fabulous and never mention WHY! So thank you for describing this so well.
This why qui gon was so damn amazing
What.......why he got run through?
This is one of my favourite "star wars moments", thank you for sharing your thoughts on it. I love it. Maul pacing back and forth like a caged predator waiting to pounce on his prey, hyping himself up. Qui gon the epitome of the jedi taking the moment to reset himself. Two opposite sides of the mirror
I've actually met Ray Park (the man who physically portrayed Maul, he was voiced over because apparently Lucas didn't want a Scottish Sith). Hell of a nice guy. Everyone was handing him pictures of Maul for him to autograph, I handed him a picture of him as Toad from the X-Men. He got into a Star Wars groove so he signed it with "Feel the Force" He offered to redo it thinking I might be upset but no. I love that mistake, makes that photo priceless. One of my most cherished possession. The second most cherish possession is my sanity...wait, where did my sanity go?
On a side note, I find it fascinating that while Sidious was the culmination of the Rule of 2 Sith, by the time he came about, much of the point of the Rule of 2 had been dropped in favor of the thinking of the Ancient Sith it was meant to replace. By the time of Plagus' master they were once again more focused on personal power and immortality, and after Sidious started the Empire, he too began to seek this and focus on military might. Both things the Rule of 2 tried to remove.
On top of that, weren't Maul and Dooku around at the same time? Sidius didn't know Maul was alive when Vader came around, but he wasn't exactly sticking to the Rule of 2 himself, anyway.
@accuset Eh, yes and no. Maul was trained while Sidious was still the apprentice to Plagus, but neither of them considered Maul to be a "true" Sith, seeing him more like the equivalent to an attack dog. And he certainly wasn't considered a Sith after he returned. That said, I do think Maul being trained at all does probably go against the Rule of 2, but I'm not 100% clear on that.
Growing up with kotor, I figured it was battle meditation, but I can see how he may have been seeking the force for a window to defeat maul and saw his own death as the only way he could be stopped by kenobi.
Everyone mistakes qui gon for being weak as well, being that he only fought maul on screen and lost. In actuality, he was one of the most powerful jedi alive at the time. He was obviously wise and experienced, but he was actually considered to be the second best form IV lightsaber duelist behind only Yoda. I believe in TPM novel maul states that he knows if he makes one wrong move against qui gon, he will die. Maul only wins due to him guiding the duel to a small space which doesn’t work well for qui gons lightsaber form, as well as qui gon getting tired due to age. Qui gon is my favorite character and the most underestimated jedi
Don't wait for the jedi too come save you, be the jedi and save others.

When I saw this (Qui-Gon meditating) for the first time I thought Jinn was just resting.
In a sense he was
It definately didn't help
That is in fact true… from a certain point of view.
@@TheMrprobadass I had a feeling someone would say those words
Same! I wonder what Lucas says concerning this scene
Qui-Gon will always be the best Jedi as he was what a Jedi was supposed to be. Though that final bit of the fight in Duel Of Fates always made no sense to me, when the shield doors opened, Obi-Wan could have used the force to super run like he and Qui-Gon did at the beginning of the movie...and he would have made it to Qui-Gon in time...Or even though the ray shields are lightsaber proof, the parts on the wall that MAKE the ray shields are NOT, just slash those and the shields would drop lol.
If im fighting someone and they stop to meditate, id s#$t myself
Good idea, the smell should throw them off their game
Happens every 3 minutes in a boxing ring. Three minutes to work, one minute to meditate...
With all this insight and knowledge from your channel and a few others I can’t wait to watch Episode 1 back on the big screen on may 4th!
Qui Gon was a great Jedi. If I was in the Jedi Academy… I’d request Qui Gon to be my Master
I'd request Obi Wan without hesitation
As someone who has watched all of your videos, this is by far one of your best! Keep it up.
This is the 2nd time he's covered this topic...this is more of a summary from a previous video.
The more I hear about qui-gon, the more I feel upset that he died.
For once I totally agree with you, about the scene and the characters state of mind. Good video!
Here we are, 25 years later still dissecting this legendary duel. I love it.
This is great. Pure Duel of the Fates. I think Qui-Gon saw everything through the Force. It was our pleasure to watch this holocron. May the Force be with you too😊
It harkened back to the calm shown in A New Hope. In PM Obiwon is the emotional learner, Qui-Gon the image of the Master Kenobi can and will become. Unflappable both physically and spiritually in the force.
Darth Maul terrified of Qui-Gon?! He hid it well.
What part of "Fear leads to a anger" did tou miss?
@@TheErlend87 I got that. But no one said you had to hide your fear or anger if you were a Sith now did they.
Seeing this in the theatre upon release was awesome to say the least.
This is one of the reasons he would have been the perfect master to Anakin. He would teach him to detach and better himself strengthening himself not only of his mind but I'm the living force itself.
The fan video on Darth Maul was the best fan video ever made.
Awesome content!! Yeah, but then Obi surprised the heck outta Maul, didn't he? 😂😂
I want to see more Qui Gon with Nielsen in the near future. Id like to see how those Jedi in the Fortress Inquisitorius base were being used, As the grand inquisitor said, there are far worse things in death. Id like to see how they are doing that and tie it in with Qui Gon since he mastered the force ghost.
Nice job
This was one of my favorite moments, the show of different ideals
Personal favorite actor of all times, and character oh the series.
He was preparing for glory and i think Maul was more worried and confused when he sensed something right before Obi-wan leaped up and sliced him
I was under the impression that force sensitive creatures only became stronger as time goes by...
My perspective was that Qui-Gon knew he met his match, and someone that could defeat him. In both duels, Maul had the upper hand convincingly.
From the “Star Wars episode 1 journals” Darth maul’s training was very intense. Scholastic did great on the series. Great read. Let’s you know who is, … Darth maul. May the force be with you.
Qui Gon was old he was taking a break with age comes wisdom the wisdom to take a chill break when you get an opportunity. Also he was preparing himself to join with the force he knew his time was all most over on this side of the living force.
He deserves more screentime. I hereby demand the old Jedi Apprentice book series be made into an animated short series. Sure, the story focuses on a young Obi Wan, but thats where we see the wisdom and power of Qui Gon on full display too.
Qui-Gon is a great Jedi but for an old lengthy man using form 4 was not very good for combat. Him losing is just the lack of encounters with lightsaber duels so he didn’t pick a form for fighting effectively
I always loved that scene
Qui-Gon is my favorite Jedi. He's the total package and challenges the status quo the Jedi simply accept as law.
I always assuming he was preparing himself to be a ghost like Obi and Yoda - Yoda does say he learned the technique from Qui Gon -- and Obi before he fell to vadar did a mediation thing
I always thought it was just a episode 4 call back.
Darth maul - "You lost obi one i have the high ground, bow to the dark side" Obi one - " ha you underestimate my power................as one of the main characters" Darth maul - "DOH"
And yet, Qui-Gon's death lead directly to the Sith destruction of the Jedi Order as it was in that time. If anything, there is a great lesson about the force here: It does not reward apathy. Qui-Gon sought to center himself in the force to be subject to its will. In this, he chose apathy and to quote Kreia: "apathy is death." This is, in my own opinion, exactly where the Jedi most often fail to truly practice their own philosophy correctly. They mistakenly believe that being apathetic, they will become in tune with the (light side) of the force. In reality, this apathy cuts them off from the power the light side of the force. Kreia was right: "apathy is death." What the Jedi is supposed to achieve is not apathy, but the absence of prejudice, so that when they act, they do so justly. Note, I believe the Sith too, almost invariably fail to truly follow their own code as well. Most often, this happens for a simple reason: "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely". The Sith so often become absorbed into the quest for more power that they inevitably forget *why* they sought power in the first place, and in this, they lose themselves to this corruption and become a source of all manner of vile acts. A true Sith is not a slave to their impulses, for that would imply a *lack of power* over themself. The Sith philosophy is not inherently evil, nor good, it is amoral by nature, what morality is takes on is up to the Sith in question. The Sith code, practiced correctly, is merely the pathway to power and freedom over destiny.
For 25 years. I have waited to fight maul. To face him. Form 7 vs form 7. I will defeat him
I never got the sense that Maul was angry or fearful or QuiGon meditating but rather that it was showing the difference in philosophy between a Jedi and a Sith. QuiGon takes a moment to center himself, waiting patiently and listening to the force for the moment that the ray shields will open. Meanwhile Maul is impatient, testing the force and just wants to keep fighting, keep the hate and anger flowing.
This is how you should actually handle all people who are against you focus on the task at hand and do not lower yourself to there level even as you face of in whatever it may be as if you can achieve this you have proven that win or lose you are in fact better than your opponent as they need you to react for without that in many ways even if you win you deny them satisfaction and in many cases any argument that you are both alike and many people can’t stand it.
Seeing these old clips makes you realize how lightsaber blinded Obi-Wan was. Homey gets kicked by everyone and it always works lol
Ya he looked real scared right before he ran Qui-Gon through.
Darth Maul was also riding the high of his first Jedi kill. Padawan Darsha Assant was his first true kill...her Master sacrificed himself to ensure that Darsha, Lorn Pavan, and I-5YQ were able to get to the Temple to alert the Council of the impending Naboo blockade. He felt robbed of the kill of the Master but he was able to take Darsha and this boosted his ego of being the first Jedi he killed. Then he killed Qui-Gon and the high he got from that was his undoing.
Though I hated too lose Qui gon so soon his presence was felt
Qui Gon meditation was bringing him closer to being a #TDBank💳 card holder🤳🏼... Darth Maul was out of his league as being a Sith... 🌎💘💰
If only the jedi masters would've listened to qui gon instead of pawning him off, and then him finding the chosen one, and the putting the chosen one in positions where the jedi didn't want to hear... oh... younglings died...
As a kid I always thought Qui Gon was meditating to open the doors
Grievous was just another maul a skillful monster to hammer things down both destroyed by obi wan
Nice.
This holocron had a lot of ads....
Qui Gon had more depth, emotional intelligence, wisdom and strength of character in one film than the entire sequel trilogy cast
Qui-Gon meditating was finding his center, which is what Jedi are supposed to do... Maul, pacing was amping up his rage which is what Sith do... he wasn't scared.
Man, that might have to be a tattoo. Qui Gon is my favorite Jedi.
He was worried he would be cut in half and shoved down shaft. It was all he could do was pretend dead when a Jedi Master viewed his dead body.
If Qui-Gon had lived, i think he would've mastered a different lightsaber style. Likely picking up Form 2 like his master, but also Form 3 which he and Obi-Wan would've mastered together. Meanwhile Annikan could've learned to master Forms 2, 3, and 4. And then when Annikan's older, he learns to master Form 5.
Qui gon could have ruined Palpatines plan.
he eventually did it, depending on the PoV
Qui gon has high blood pressure and was simply trying to bring it back down.
I always thought gon was just using a heal item 😂
And all funny memes about lightsaber injuries aside, that’s why he let himself die on Naboo.
Qui- Gon Jinn was the key to all of this and the Sith knew both Darth Plaguis and Darth Sidious

We need a Qui-Gon Jin prequel
Did Qui Gon know he was going to die and used what training he had to meditate become an incomplete force ghost? To become a Force voice?
Here's a question: yes I do understand that the ray shield doors do open automatically but why use the force to open them up sooner or keep them open while everyone gets through? Or Maul, being a sith, force choke either Qui Gon or Obi Won while the doors are closed?
Qui-gon and Anakin are the only Jedi that reminds me of real people
Both keep there soul something most jedi don't do or encourage. Qui was more a Grey jedi experimented with dark side at some point he just didn't fall into it. Unfortunately anikin feel straight in.

The duel of fates was also about the fate of Anakin. Qui-gon wins or at least survives the fight and Skywalker has a different life
If qui Gon would've trained on some Taken or Raz Al Guhl kinda stuff,he would've beat Maul 🤣
I have come to believe that the whole of KZhead, users & content creators alike are somehow hung up on the word "terrifying" and it's variants. There must be some compilation of metrics somewhere that explains the effect it's supposed to have. If not...😕 It could just be band wagon snake oil.
