My dad, a vet, saved one when I was a child. The local Kookys were very territorial, so they would attack it if it went outside. They would also sit outside and watch it inside, whenever our little Kookaburra would see one of them it would freeze. My mum would find it frozen and close the blind, and little Kooki (it's name) would hop off happily around the house, until a little while later you would find it frozen again as the outside birds would have found another vantage to look in. Eventually all the blinds would be closed in the middle of the day and Kooki would be happily hopping around the house.

Whenever you give a Kookaburra food, they almost always gotta kill it. ; )~ I gave a wild one a long strip of bacon fat. He flew across to a flat rock and proceeded to whack it over & over for about 5 minutes. Maybe he mistook it for a centipede... ~ ~ ~ I used to feed a family of Magpies at my mum's property in amongst the tall Karri trees, down in WA's South-West. Each year there was another generation, with the juveniles from previous years helping to feed the noisy little things. There were also 28s & Kookaburras who would appear out of nowhere as soon a the food came out. I learned, to my astonishment, that 28s - those little seed / nut eating parrots - loved meat, especially chicken... ~ ~ ~ Kookaburras would periodically swoop in, bully every other bird, grab some food & fly on out to eat it. I did get along quite well with a big old female. She bossed the other Kookas round with lots of beak clacks & upward parrrrttts. We decided that she was the Matriarch of the family & treated her with respect. I never got her to climb onto my hand, but she used to glide in to sit on the back/shoulder part of a cane chair whenever I came out & sat on it. She'd be a few inches from my right ear (a bit of a concern with that huge chef's knife of a beak), occasionally playing with my hair, but mostly she just sat quietly (with just a few small krrrks & the occasional quiet beak clack). If I brought out food, I offer her some as I was eating & she'd look everything over carefully (alternating eyes), then delicately take it from my fingers & chow down. Whenever another bird - usually a magpie or kookaburra - came close, she'd hop across to another chair, stretch out har wings & squawk out some damn loud sounds, interspersed with powerful beak-klacks like gunshots. After they were run off, she'd come back kind'a stressed, with mussed feathers, each needing careful realignment. I'd gently stroke her chest & throat, and she'd get a little dopey, drooping her head & rousing suddenly. This intimacy was a profound privilege & just so wonderfully amazing from a wild bird. ~ ~ ~ I've always considered both Kookaburraa & Magpies to be far more intelligent than we give them credit for. They certainly know how to tell time & recognize individual human faces - both relatively sophisticated aspects of intelligence. For example: If you feed magpies outside the laundry door @ 4pm sharp, the next day it'll be 3:55pm & they'll appear en masse, ready for their snack. If you're late, then a delegation of 2 or 3 males will go 'round the house, looking in each window until they see you, and then it's tap-tap-tap squawk, tweeeedle, tap, TAP, TAP! - until they can see they've got your attention - and finally following you back through the house (watching through the closest windows). If you ever feed them, make sure to exaggeratedly show them that the bowl of food is now empty. Otherwise they may come & tap on the laundry window, after you leave.

Well, magpies are well known for being extremely smart!
@tookitogo3 жыл бұрын
I have a Gray Butcherbird and it's offspring come for a regular feed, I can hand feed mum, but the younger one is still a bit shy. Along with them is a big family of Magpies, some are trusting, others still a bit wary. I will take out food for them and point to one and say, 'you, are you ready?' and toss them something. What I have noticed is that there is never fighting over food. They all wait their turn.

Kookaburras are the largest members of the kingfisher family. Kookaburras are present _only_ on the continent of Australia and in New Guinea. The name is a loanword from the Wiradjuri language, 'guuguubarra', onomatopoeic of its call.

The only wild bird I've had perch on my hand was a fledgling dove. There seems to be a time in their life where they tire out very rapidly after leaving their nest, and this one had perched on a sliding gate. I noticed it wasn't flying away when it was getting close to the rollers. I came over to try to scare it away so it wouldn't be injured by the rollers, and it didn't budge. I decided to put my finger under its breast and try to see if it would step up. It did once it had nearly lost balance. You should've seen my wife's face when I was standing there with a dove perched on my finger while opening her mom's gate. I'm pretty sure one of its parents was perched on a power line nearby. I found a tree branch I was able to get it to step up on, and that was the last I saw of it.

They love the cold fresh water, and since I also live in the desert they never turn down a nice cold drink. We had a similar situation with a magpie, unfortunately birds hate seeing other birds get helped by humans...no idea why its almost like they look down on it.
@@brogers_ That's so true. Wild birds somehow always know and will try to kill pet birds the same way the will kill other wild birds they deem deformed or baby runts.

THIS BIRD IS CALLED BOOF
;D YES I LOVE IT
“Say thank you.” Little Boof: *raptor noises*
I didn't know these existed... and Now I love them
Damn, we learned about these amazing birds and their laugh using the famous song about them already back in primary school.
kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, its a song I heard before I ever saw one.
Search for "kookaburra remix"
That is how to keep a bird not in the cages. They are free to fly. Beautiful bird love it.
Kookaburras are the largest members of the kingfisher family. Kookaburras are present _only_ on the continent of Australia and in New Guinea. The name is a loanword from the Wiradjuri language, 'guuguubarra', onomatopoeic of its call.
The bird sounds Australian.
We don’t have many cool animals in The Netherlands but I recently got a wild duck to sit on my lap. It took quite some bread though haha.
The noises that birds make are really interesting! They each have such unique personalities
Lol rin pfp
That's actually not its call, a kookaburras call is known to us as the laughing bird. If you watch a video of the kookaburra making its call you would see why.
your dog is missing some legs but it is handsome and strong
One of Australia's few animals that won't kill you.
Australians are lucky to have birds like this. All we have here in NYC are Rock Pigeons that shit on everything and are too afraid to let anyone touch them.
I can't believe there are people that never heard of a kookaburra. Here in Canada every school child knew "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bushes he."
Bush is he*
Andrew Jackson it’s not a saying, it is the name of an animal.... Like a “buffalo”.... Blame the Merican education system I’d say.
Paul Burley, I know, it is hard to believe.
There is more in the world then just Canada. I only heard the word of the bird through that song as it was sung by the girl in the Dr Who episode 'Fear Her'. But here in the Netherlands, generally, I think the bird is unknown.

Lovely story

sixtysixstyx when you realize the animal that you think hes gonna drop is a bird
Same here, sixtysixstyx. I don't think the kookaburra would have survived a fall from that high up if it had fallen off his hand. Just saying.
You really think the bird would think that and not panic as it's falling? I'd hate to be dropped from that height if I were that bird on that person's hand.
Cranston Snord xD
Michal these are wild birds. I can assure you their wings aren't clipped.
No, KZhead did not recommend this to me. I actually searched for a kookaburra video and I am NOT disappointed 💙
One of my favorite birds. My mother called them a Laughing Jackass.

@Sardeed The simulation is a lie designed to pacify the population, fed to the masses by our propaganda parroting, corporate controlled media. Existence is merely the shadow of an illusion, nothingness compounded upon itself in a timeless loop, a continuity of static null-matter reverberating inwardly unto oblivion.
Youve seen dinosaurs to know this? Or are you saying that because it sounds kind of like the cgi raptors in movies? Dinosaurs never existed.

Thats pretty cool dog
I love kookaburras. If I lived in AUS I would be trying to befriend the local population just like this. Amazing little friends in the sky aren't they? Just hang out in the backyard with some meat, and start feedin' em :) I'd also put out a couple of bird baths (the kind that refresh the water and keep the inside clean, they're nice I got em in my backyard for the local birds here. They love the cold fresh water, and since I also live in the desert they never turn down a nice cold drink. There's a lot of lovebirds for some reason that live inside the cactuses out there in Scottsdale. I also will see pidgeons and doves here and there as well as some hummingbirds.
