In todays session,
I wanted to put Alejandro through a session that worked on his Fast Approach and Slow Arrival technique when dealing with 1 vs 1's and angle shot stopping. As usual, from the beginning of the session, I wanted to introduce the "Stopping & Starting" concept so that he would feel comfortable once we moved further into the progressions. From start to finish, I felt as though Alejandro made tons of improvement. He was able to take the concepts we introduced and slowly find a way to translate them into saves. I was very happy with his overall performance.

  • Alejandro is taking a 1/2 step backwards before going forward. It's a false step. Think of two people racing a 60 yd dash standing side by side. At the sound of the gun Alejandro first step is back with his right foot, if his opponent first step is forward he is already about a yard behind at the start. You can really see it at the 3:40 mark in the video when you use slow motion. Something to think about if he is racing for a 50/50 ball in the box. Lots of good information.

    • Great explanation there. I've been playing soccer since I was 4yrs old and GK at that. You never learn to much. It is possible this GK plays another sport such as baseball and or (slow- pitch) softball. In the outfield there when the ball is hit your first step is back not forward. In soccer its just opposit first step is forward no matter where the ball is going.

  • 1) I loved watching this training session because I know that I need to work on my angles and 1v1 scenarios. 2) I think the progressions connected well and continued to build throughout the session. 3) I liked how you critiqued Alejandro on his approach to set position; while the one foot on one foot off may be advantageous, Alejandro can make the jump work and simply needs to learn how to adjust, by adding that second jump you mentioned. Although I may not comment much, I’m a huge fan of your channel. I have found a lot of these training sessions help me visually and there are always new tips and advice for me to learn and try to incorporate into my own trainings. Thank you so much and keep up the hard work!!

  • I've been looking for a good drill to do with my son in the back yard to simulate adjusting to the ball and the strikers approach. He got a offer from a club team without ever trying out after they saw him in a penalty shootout in a rec all star game. I think he's so good at penalty's cause that's all we really do in the back yard. Will for sure give these a try.

  • Nice training. Eric Stelle visits us regularly down here in Melbourne, Australia and gives us the De Gea style lessons too. Top bloke! One technical point on the jumping forward to set, I can see the gk jumps in heavy, very low, and then gets his final split/set in a bit late and on the rise. Jumping into set is actually beneficial as it activates the stretch shortening cycle, but the jump should be more vertical. Jump up, land in your set position, and as the ball is being struck, you should be coiling down like a spring, then pounce towards the ball. You will have more power, and a lower center of gravity which studies show is one significant difference between pro and amateur gks. Watch some German gks training or top tennis players getting set on a return serve as a good example.

  • 10:35 Quick question. When the keeper is going to use the block save after closing out a 1v1, aren't they supposed to lunge to their right when the attacker is coming from the right? This is how I was taught, but I can easily see this helping to cover the back post (potentially leaving the front post exposed slightly) or is it just the preference of the goalkeeper?

    • I always go for covering my near post because leaving the near post exposed even to a slightest can lead to an unstoppable shot by the attacker 🤷‍♂️ I'm just a beginner, maybe I'm wrong

    • That's how it is taught to every beginner, but experienced goalkeepers sometimes use their intuition and try to predict the trayectory of the shot. It's up to each goalkeeper what decision they make.

    • Hey Luis! I would highly recommend squats and deadlifts. Not only will it make you stronger, but I feel it'll help with your power movements into set positions and help with stability prior to shots. In regards to doing them during the season, I would consult with a strength trainer and see if there's any way to supplement those workouts without it leaving you sore. It's important to have strength maintenance throughout a season to help with injuries and overall health. Hope that helps!

  • Question on video; Why use a smaller goals for a lot of drills? When should I as a keeper identify when to actually close a distance for 1v1? Majority of my personal saves in 1v1 situations have come from setting the feet and reacting using the K technique etc. but I now find my self hesitant to closing down an angle and now instead stand my ground at the incorrect times, last two goals conceded were due to this, thoughts? I think you said before were a..rounder kid, I’m not overweight but struggle with diet and having that “ Athletic” look. I can lift heavier than average and such in the gym but you wouldn’t be able to tell by looking. Any help or advice would be great.

    • I tend to use the smaller goals/poles to help my gk's develop the technical foundations (movements, techniques etc) through my progressions. Once we have that covered, we'll move to the bigger goals. I think when it comes to the K SAVE or the BLOCK SAVE, it's becoming so fashionable that people are using it as a default rather than playing each situation based on what's being presented to them. So I'd say, 2-4 yards away, the block save would be most ideal, but any further than that, I'd say just play it honest and stay big. That'll give you the best possible chance to make a save imo. I think for us heavier set guys, having a high IQ/being able to read the game + having superior technique, is what'll keep us around. SO, I would say to focus on those two things!

  • At 12:55 is there a coaching reason why he keeps standing, instead of closing more of the goal, by moving forward? I know he shouldn't dive headlessly forward, since the coach/striker could take a touch around him for an open goal, but it looks like a step would still be rather appropriate.

    • This keeper has 0 skills trust me, I'm a pro goalie in Italy, it is always better to land on your laterals because you are much quicker to get up, then the low central catch is terrible, you never catch that ball with the legs opened in that way... I could keep on...

  • Ik im not a professional goalkeeper but I’m a goalkeeper and when he did the intro diving you never collect the ball with you legs wide open coz if the balk slips outta your hands it’s a goal coz it’s gone straight through your legs. Pick it up like you proposing to somebody but like do it sideways

    • Agree with Kiah. There's other ways to stretch hamstrings not by learning bad habits. Should have a leg down to prevent rolling through legs. Good session though otherwise

    • That shape is a warm up, top pro clubs do it across Europe. It's never taught as a technique when the work actually starts. And despite what a lot of people and coaches think, the reason you step to the side and follow with the trailing leg ISN'T to block the ball with your legs if it spills. It is the best way biomechanically to get low and get your head and hands behind the ball. You save with your hands not your legs.

    • @@Psyaii 😂🤣 FFS. wrong on all counts. It isn't used as a warm up across Europe 😂...... I know! And it IS used to block the ball IF it is spilled by your HANDS to prevent it going through your legs. It is not biomechanically easier to do this as for example, if your right knee Is down to collect the ball you have to twist your body towards it to collect....... I'm done 😂

    • @@michaelgraham7301 Saying 'I know' isn't a very compelling argument. I've had pro keeper coaches from European countries do that in the warmup, it's just a stretch with the ball. I said its biomechanically better, not easier. Better because it allows a twist (obviously) and gets your head over the ball and hands and body balanced in behind. Aiming to make a complete block with your legs stuffed in together is cramping and leaves the head inefficiently upright. Have a look at top goalkeepers, they will have a gap because they prioritise the hands. I've also never seen the legs actually save a gk from poor hands anyway, it's more like rhetoric for coaching kids so they get the idea, but it's the wrong way to think of the technique
