Torrential rain did not slow down the action at the 2023 Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin.
Florida's Parker Valby ran wire to wire to defeat a strong field that included defending champion and the reigning NCAA XC champion Katelyn Tuohy from NC State.
Her time, 19:17.2, bested Tuohy by 12 seconds and broke the course record.
Northern Arizona took the team title with 52 points over NC State's 95.

  • Super strong race by Parker. She kept pushing the pace. She freakin beat the course record by 16 seconds with high winds and very rainy conditions. Truly impressive race. Congrats to Parker on the win!

    • @@tracyyoung224 Hard disagree with this analysis. Tuohy's time was extremely good today. Valby ran the course record. Tuohy was still over 23 seconds ahead of third place and 15 seconds ahead of her time from last year's meet. I can't see any way to analyze this race where I think that Tuohy ran a bad race and is burned out from track season that ended over 4 months ago.

At last year’s NCAA she could not break Tuohy and may have won if she had not pushed the pace. Obviously running from the front is her style ala Pre. If she develops a kick, she will be devastating.

  • When I ran cross country there was no human way a golf cart could have made it over the course. Sandy flats; stony river bottoms; semi-vertical, tree-root-riddled mounainsides; and weather-dependent water-filled drainage ditches. This more akin to a pasture walk after the hay was cut.

  • Finally I get to see a well delineated and "developed" cross country course! This was a great course!! For the last 10 years (at all levels-open, senior, masters, world class etc.) cross country courses have become "road races" not the way cross country courses "supposed" to be (rolling hills, flats, rough terrain, weather etc.) look at the 1980's world cross country championships and European cross country. In regards to Valpy, she was awesome, very strong and north western U always a top performer. This team is a reflection of great coaching by Jill Miller.

  • NAU women & Parker Valley made a very LOUD statement today. Not sure what is going on with Sam Bush but she didn't race like she usually does at Piane and was on the Nuttycomb Roster/Start list but DNS'd. Interestingly, if you insert Tyynisma in somewhere between 5th - 10th which is not unreasonable given her championship racing history then it is almost a dead heat between NAU and NC State (no clue as to the Fitness or health of Amaris though she has been photograped training in workouts with the team) Gonna be interesting to see how this plays out. Also noticed no Mazza-Downie for Florida (only ran 6).

If State can get KT, Kelsey, 'Maris and Sam performing up to potential, then there's got to be SOMEBODY out there who can score in the 30-40 range for number 5. At Joe Piane Leah was 4th and Grace was 9th. I like it. Bush, by the way, was 30th.

Also, true freshman Aussie Keira Moore is going to be a force the next few years - I think she finished 18th. NAU has crazy depth as the B squad finished 1-2-3! Men's NAU team won without Colin Sahlman so who would likely be a competitor to score at the 5th spot so they can do even better later in the season. Bosley seemed bothered by the weather...never really kicked it into high gear, but he has lots of time to peak.

  • Katelyn has asymmetric upper body motion with her arms. Her right arm moves in a natural way along her body, but her left arm comes across in front of her. The motion throws off the rest of her lower body symmetry and efficiency. She needs to control her left arm like she does her right arm. It will give her more speed and use less energy.

I think observers pick at Tuohy if she doesnt win a race. The level of work and talent to be the worlds best is unappreciated. I sure hope Tuohy can at least enjoy her efforts and ignore the pessimistic noise.

I think she started to beat Kelsey in 8th grade, then, about a year later, young Brooke Rauber comes along. Tuohy is a s tough as nails and I'm not worried about her. I just wish she'd forget about the Olympics. With the packed pro field right now she is not going to make the team this year.

She was back about 95th place (and your race-wide place NUMBER counts as points in CC, lower is better), and the NC State team was about 35 points behind NAU at that point. She gobbled up 33 places. A coach with access to the live feed probably was yelling "you need to catch those 40 gals and we win!"... And she charged off to do it! She did what she could, but NAU was not going to be beat that day.

    • I'm surprised no one has mentioned it, the rain 'softened' the course and that favors taller runners, particularly those like Valby with injury problems that make hard surfaces problematic. If Valby was a racehorse, she would be termed a 'mudder'. Touhy has improved since last year, as evidenced by her improved time, continuing to ascend and descend the hills better than the other runners, but the final reel-in was too little too late. This was Valby's course and Valby's day.

However, she has great endurance and has definitely trained to run fast at a consistent speed - that was the best way to run her race and she nailed it. So my question about KT is that did she under-estimate PV's speed and wasn't able to kick enough to catch up, did the rain impact her confidence in kicking at the end, or have we seen PV take up another level?

This was all done in less than ideal conditions. I can't draw any conclusion that says Tuohy should've done anything more than she did, especially if you view this as a team race. I mean, Tuohy pretty much left Chmiel in the dust in order to try to keep contact. Even though Chmiel still managed third, from a team perspective I wonder if it wouldn't have been better to just let Valby go from the start. I'd love to hear what Tuohy's coach thinks.

  • So adding another comment as I've been thinking about this. How PV ran is how she's going to run every race - she has good endurance and good speed. There's no secret to how she's going to run. She's going to run strong and fast every time. She is taller and has a bit of a longer stride - not much KT can do about that. OK so KT's best time in the 5k is 15:03 which means she runs about 1k in 3 minutes. So if she had kept up that pace she would have run 18:03 (let's add a few seconds due to fatigue so 18:30 and the course). PV ran this in 19:17 (Tuohy in 19:30). Now weather was bad and KT does back off a bit in bad weather (don't blame her at all). So what's next? Not sure but all of their races should be great. Have a great season KT and PV - hope you push each other to great times. Every Bird needs a Magic and vis-a-versa.

    • I don't think so. It was a downhill section and when a runner gets rolling fast downhill, they have to exaggerrate some arm swing to keep the torso from pitching over. Pretty sure they don't have a nasty rivalry where they'd be smacking each other, it'd be out of character for both runners.

Someone else commented that Touhy came around the last turn " like a friggin eagle ", which was accurate. The only thing else I have noticed is between Jacksonville and Austin something happened and she hasn't seemed to be herself, she did run well at the US tournament where she finished 7th beating some olympians.

  • That was certainly a good run by Parker. Has she got a new coach? Her previous coach seemed to be clueless. Parker has had the advantage of a target in front of her for over a year (Katelyn), thus something to aim for. As for KT, she is the superlative champion and has been for 7 years. This performance will only bring out the best in her in the future since she's had virtually no competition for her entire running career. I wonder whether they'll both be at the ACC in two weeks. In any case this duo will likely bring some amazing performances in the coming year. I was glad to see the two of them hug at the end, very gracious on the part of both of them.

It could be she is in a cycle of training, overtraining, where second place is acceptable but not Katelyn's goal. My guess and I certainly could be wrong, is that Katelyn is training for nationals. We have to wait and see if this is the case. I thought she should have transferred after last year's fiasco in the 1500. I don't mean to be controversial AvocatDude

  • Tuohy needs to watch some film and get her arms working evenly... Her right arm hangs lower and doesn't flow with her motion. Parker looks perfect in comparison.

  • This was KT's first race of the season. To me, she didn't look comfortable; she didn't have her normal poise and command presence. My impression was that she was running a time more than an all-out full-gas attempt to win. In the last k, once she saw that Parker was not going to fade and that the race was out of reach, she backed off. My prediction is that at ACCs she will ratchet it up a notch, and then another notch at regionals. In five weeks Parker is not going to run away from her like she did on Friday. If she does, it means something is up with Katelyn, because when she is in fighting trim, she should be able to beat Parker any day of the week. Tuohy is a 15:03 runner (five months ago). Parker's PB is 15:20, 16 months ago. That said, Parker did look great. I think they're both thinking deeply about Doris and Hilda. On Friday Hilda beat Doris by a fraction of a second at Alabama's Crimson Classic home meet.

    • Parker literally just beat her handily head to head. You can’t just assume Katelyn will be better at NCAAs and Parker won’t be. You compared 5k times but conveniently ignored their 6k xc times. Valby has run 18:25 compared to 19:08 from Tuohy. Valby also just ran a course record 19:17 here at Nuttcombe in bad conditions. That’s 12 seconds better than Tuohy and 27 seconds better than Tuohy’s time here from a year ago. It’s clear from this race that Valby is healthier and in better form than last year. This was the best performance of her career, and she is the clear favorite to win in November.

    • "Clear favorites" aren't decided on one race. Parker had a great race, but it was obvious early from Katelyn's facial demeanor, the edge and effortlessness was not there today for her. I suspect Virginia will be different. Hope both stay injury free to push one another. These 2 are the faces of American Distance running going forward. @@LaxStixTactics

    • @@LaxStixTactics You make good points. But looking at the trajectory of their careers, Tuohy is a generational runner; she has proved that already: owning the NCAA indoor 1500, mile and 3000 and the outdoor 5000, breaking a 14 year old record. Parker is a great runner who I predict will peak in mid-collegiate career and then never reach that apex again. But we shall see. I believe Katelyn, in her incremental improvement from season to season, starting in 7th grade, is not merely the outstanding athlete of the season, but, if she chooses to pursue pro running, a very rare runner on a scale with Emily Sisson, Elise Cranny, Jenny Simpson, Shalane Flannagan, Whittni Morgan, Alicia Monson and a few others I could name if my memory were not failing because of age. Obviously. on Friday, Parker was the more fit runner; she won, and good for her. I hope, and would pray, if I were religious, that Parker stays healthy. ( I do surround her with warm, healing light).) Looking ahead, I think a few things in this order: 1) Henes' full time obsession is in running auditions for a fifth guy in who can break 35. If Tyynismaa is healthy and at potential, and Sam Bush (a worry) can make her last two year's result, then the Wolfpack is looking, as usual for a fifth guy in at whatever it needs to be to win. Last year Brookie was 90th, scoring 78 to cop the title. Scoring 78 she was actually the first 5th guy in out of the other 30 teams after the Lobos.. But this year, NAU is the monster, and even with, let's say 3-4-9, and 15 to 20, the Pack will need a fifth guy who scores below 35 to beat NAU. Stephens? Loveys? Quarzo? Napoleon? Who knows? Brooke's 90th place isn't going to cut it this year, no matter if Katelyn is first, second or third..

    • @@Philobiblion I’m not arguing that Parker has had a better career or that she’ll go on to have more success in the future. Obviously Katelyn has accomplished more up until this and I agree that she’ll probably go on to have a better professional career as well. My argument was specifically about this cross country season. My main point was simply that based on how good Parker looked in this race and based on her prior cross country credentials and the fact that she finally looks fully healthy, I believe that she’s the favorite to win the national meet in November. Obviously things can change, and I’m sure it will be a great race regardless of who ultimately wins. As far as the team race goes, it should be a great battle between NAU and NC State, and the health/form of Bush and Tyynismaa will definitely be a major factor. I also wouldn’t count out BYU, as they looked absolutely phenomenal this past weekend at pre-nationals.

    • @@LaxStixTactics Repeating is hard. I think since they went to 6k in 2000 only three people have done it: Shalane, Sally Kipyego (who three-peated) and Sheila Reid most recently in 2010-11. I want to see what KT does at ACCs and regionals. If she wins both then I will look for her to win at NCAAs. If she loses one or both, then I would have to go with either Parker, Hilda or Doris.
