What do you do when you have a stuck ring on your finger? I jammed my ring finger and it swelled so badly that I couldn't get it off. I tried soap and icing my hand with no luck. I was worried it would turn blue and need to be amputated. So I used a Dremel to cut off my wedding ring after 32 years.

  • My husband of 39 years just cut his gold wedding ring off using this tutorial. His ring finger was swollen purple. His dremmel was broken so we went to Home Depot and got a new one first.. Placed half of a clothes pin under band, ice under ring. Ring is off, much with much relief and a new Dremmel! Win win! This was Very Helpful!

    • Just as a tip if it's urgent for whatever reason - if it's a high gold content alloy like usually used for such pieces: It's soft af! You can nip it with a wire cutter or similar. Even a pruning shear/secateur or similar might be worth a try. The edge of a regular file will go through it in no time as well.

    • I was the one who bought the rings and still I managed to get the size wrong: too big for me, too small for my partner (he gained weight). While I have to be careful because my ring keeps falling off my hand, I'm also scared he is going to lose his finger if it eventually gets stuck. Hopefully not lol

  • As an ICU Nurse, I've taken off many rings in the intensive care unit off patients who's hands have swollen considerably more than your finger had swollen. Wrap your finger in dental floss tightly like the threads of a screw, then lube it up with soap and twist it down the finger. I haven't had this method fail me yet. Hope this helps anyone that finds them self in this predicament. Cutting works too, but you might want to give this method a try first. I'm glad you saved your finger, degloving injuries are not fun.

    • I hate to say for an ICU nurse, you don't know that simple windex glass cleaner squirt on the finger, slides the rings right off! I owned a jewelry store for many years and customers would get a ring stuck for what ever reason while trying that new diamond ring on and I always had a bottle of windex with me anyway, to clean the display cases, it works and slides rings right off fast! I think you damn medical people love to charge an arm and a leg in the emergency room for something so easy to take care off!
