I love how free he is. He doesn't feel any obligation to act like a normal person who makes sense in normal ways-- everything is music, everything is rhythm, everything is experience, everything is art.

I took a jazz class and we talked about him and scatting for a couple days. As someone who's played music for a long time I was captivated by his talent and skill. Sometimes what he does is funny or strange compared to modern music but no one can deny his skill. I think him being okay with being a little different and strange is what makes him so captivating to me. He doesn't care what he looks like he's just doing his thing and making his music.

actually if you listen to Indian musicians, they have a way to "sing the rhythms of the tabla" or "vocal percussion" to mimic each of the different types of finger/hand strokes used when they play a set of tabla. That's probably an older form of beat boxing. The term used is Konnakol. Check out Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, they are probably the two best contemporary tabla players. I think Trilok is more original as he strays away from traditional Indian sounds and rhythms as he incorporates other music forms. Konnakol is taught to elementary school kids in India as they have to be able to "sing" the parts before they can learn how to play the instrument. it helps internalize the rhythms better. top percussionists can improvise rhythms and then play them after they sing them.

I remember this concert. I'd never heard of the guy. Saw the show on HBO or something. Never forgot Al Jarreau again after that. Simply the best. He's like a jazz trumpet or sax player and can damn near sing every lick you could put through a horn. I don't know if any of you know or remember that singer in Fifth Element. They used some synthesizer tricks to pull off that performance. Al Jarreau could do something like that without any synthesizer. A great imagination and a voice that could reproduce anything he could imagine. He's the king.

Al Jarreau is the Greatest Jazz Singer of this era. The way he could change the sounds, mood, styles in his voice was amazing. There will be no other singer like him. I've had the pleasure of watching him in concert up close & personal, but this particular performance is SPECIAL. Since his death, I've become mesmerize with this set. Just UNBELIABLE & GREAT ALL IN ONE! It's amazing how the music transcends his being. How his voice or being becomes every instrument in the band & he does not hold back, doesn't care who watching, he was a professional at his craft & I will always miss Mr. Al Jarreau. One more note on THE MAN- My friends & i went to Central Park to see a free concert. On the card was Sly & The Family Stone. Holding true to form, Sly & the Family Stone never showed up, but in their place was Al Jarreau. You just wouldn't believe the cat calls and boos that came from the crowd, including myself and the group I was in. No one had heard of Al Jarreau. But once he started singing & performing we were stunned by what we were hearing from this singer that we never heard of. To say the least we never forgot who this singer was & I will always sing his praise to this day. This recording from 1976 is one of if not the best live videos I've seen of a performance. Thank You Al Jarreau & GOD bless you my brother for bringing JOY & HAPPINESS INTO OUR LIVES.

I don't think I've ever smiled broader than I just did while listening to this! To have such control over your voice is simply amazing. I'm 14 years old, and it saddens me that I first hear of this genius now... after his demise.
I love how free he is. He doesn't feel any obligation to act like a normal person who makes sense in normal ways-- everything is music, everything is rhythm, everything is experience, everything is art.
Omg this comment right here perfectly expressed what drew me to Al!!!!
classic
Exactly💯✔️❤️ He doesn't let anyone put him in a box💯✔️👑
A real master!
Everything about him is Al Jarreau, simples.
It took many, many years of listening to all kinds of music before I was musically intelligent enough to comprehend the depth and ability of this man's music.
Recorded On December 2016
I was hooked the first time I heard him. The song was My favorite things. I thought he would look like Bing Crosby. Imagine my reaction to finding this video.
Finished on January 2017
I took a jazz class and we talked about him and scatting for a couple days. As someone who's played music for a long time I was captivated by his talent and skill. Sometimes what he does is funny or strange compared to modern music but no one can deny his skill. I think him being okay with being a little different and strange is what makes him so captivating to me. He doesn't care what he looks like he's just doing his thing and making his music.
did you opened yourself to the rich traditional african musics? 'cause that cosmos would have connect you easely to Al Jarreaus ghift.
2024! We need to appreciate originality!True expression! Brilliant art!
My dad described Al’s music to me when I was very young, as,”using your voice as an instrument.” He was not wrong!
Beat boxing before beat boxing was a thing. Rest well Al. You are missed.
He was scratching the track vocally before djs were 🙏
Didn't know Al was gone . I'll see him when I Git there . P.S. When did he go too the upper room ?
Want Esmeralda
that's what I was thinking before beat boxing
actually if you listen to Indian musicians, they have a way to "sing the rhythms of the tabla" or "vocal percussion" to mimic each of the different types of finger/hand strokes used when they play a set of tabla.
Al Jarreau is the personification of jazz ... and truly a gift to us all. This rendition of Take 5 is mind blowing. What a legend, and he will be missed immensely.
@Karrlin Kirklin too good to be true
Truly he is. He was a gift.
Kem is great but nothing like Al Jarreau..
Yes it is!!!!
He lived his unbridled free self. A pure soul, true blessing among his pure soul
Ladies and gentlemen you will never see something like this again! Times have changed and its becoming a lost art!
Say it LOUD and Say it again 😞 😢
You don't know what we'll see. Lots of things we never thought we would see: smart phones and a black president to name 2.
If you see everything is going down the tubes. Music is no where near what it used to be both in singers and actual non-synthasized sounds/instruments.
People are clueless too. Do you know Cardi B got on the RollingStone cover her 1st year... something that took Prince years and years to do... imagine that.
No one wants to be different. Everyone is the same and copy cat. We had at the same time Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Patti Labelle, Anita Baker. Tell me who do we have now? Not even a single person even close. And please don't say Beyonce.. lol
Happy heavenly birthday to Mr. Al Jarreau today 3-12 & ty for all the good lyrics & music
Real dappy player: she sitting on her front pouch, sipping on Coconut mix with sugar cane juice 🧃 Every time her mama wasn't indoors, he was lucky to walk by. One of the most gifted jazz groove artists of 21st century. Rest his high synergy Soul.
This is the difference between playing music & BEING music!!
well said!
arch Stanton -- You nailed it!
arch stanton Playing music is being music. No matter the instrument being used. Music is an expression....of a state of mind.
👍🏿 x 50!
indeed
The original Take Five by Dave Brubeck has always been my favorite piece of music. I just saw this version. My first thought seeing it before I listened was maybe it's not the same song. I mean how could anyone do a vocal of it, right? I was moved to tears. Unbelievable. Al Jarreau is a celestial being not of this earth.
agree
Listen to the version by Grover Washington as well. Shows what a brilliant composition this was.
Paul Desmond is the real compositor....
Have a listen to Carmen McRae version.... excellent vocals.

Did anyone else forget to breathe because they were so immersed in this simply amazing music? We will never see talent like this again and I am glad I could be around to be part of it.

Apologies for the late reply. There is only a couple of songs that can ever do this to me. This one and a Grace Jones song. (And a couple of others that I perform).
There will NEVER be another Al Jarreau. Rest in eternal peace.
The poetry of music.

Al was simply the best , his improvised interpretation of Take Five is a Masterpiece.
Listen to the new nas track. It pays homage to this and it's awesome.

If this performance had not been recorded, and someone tried to describe what happened, I would not believe it were possible. Al Jarreau, quite simply, is his craft. :)
+Edwin Stewart No way to describe is right. Not only his scat that's so amazing - he morphs into a ton of different musical instruments while being a living, breathing super jazz singer of all time. Watch some of his videos from the 70's up to the current day. He's just a joy that was created for our entertainment. There still are people out there that don't get it and I feel sorry for them. He is awesome!!!

Truly the BEST times for Al Jarreau Live in Europe RIP Al you and George Duke missin' you both!
40+ years ago a friend of mine worked at the Beacon theater and Al Jarreau was performing. I had never heard him before, only heard of him. I was there while he was practicing for the upcoming show and got to meet him backstage. Of course I stayed for the show. He absolutely blew me away. He was incredible!
You and physically SEE the music through this man. This is why I love jazz. It reaches down into you and grabs your soul by the throat.

He embodied Music. Such a creative force with immeasurable positive energy. Rest Peaceful, Beautiful Mr. Jarreau!
Did he even need a band behind him? What a genius......

I have never heard of Al Jareau. I played this and immediately thought 'what is this insane shit??' But four minutes later i'm absolutely transfixed. This must be what genius truly is. The ability to surpass lunacy and enter a new realm of breathtaking.

I will always love this man's incredible powers to transform me from all the thoughts that I knew then, and now! There has never been another like him, and I doubt there ever will!
the first al jarreau song i heard was we're in this love together. it was after christmas 1982. i was 12. in the following spring, i heard mornin'.

he even included breathing in his song such a legend

when the bass comes in. damnnnn. you could hang a coat on that groove
+powerrangerjesus And that keyboard. Holy hell that's brilliant.
The final part, where Tom Canning plays lots of chromatic stuff on the Rhodes and Al Jarreau goes deeper into tension and psychedelia, is so incredibly stunning that one feels sad when it finishes!
+bluestudio67 thought i was the only one
I like to pick out an intrument in a song and zone in on it. Once I do that with every instrument I sit back and listen to them all at once without straining...and that's when the song gets really good. No song is boring after that. Try it, man.
Solid solid solid
Just look at his smile...he loves his job! And he does so well! He's so professional!
a masterpiece. I am still speacheless 40 years after
I was too much impacted when I first heard him singing this song
Yeah, as me!
Dave Brubeck would be so proud of what this master has done with this song 🎵 👏 🙌
He was very very proud and amazed in fact there's some vintage KZhead videos I believe from the 90s where he played and Al sang
This guy's scatting is AMAZING!!! as he weaves his magic into Brubeck's Take Five...
How can anyone not stop and be hypnotized by this one and only!
Just as stunning today as when I saw him 40 years ago.
this man do with his mouth what his body needs, and do with his body what his mouth sings. This is the perfect connection between music and a musician, he is not dancing voluntarily, he has to dance in order to feel what is necessary to sing like that.
It's the musical spontaneity of Al Jarreau which makes this piece so unforgettable and yet infectious.
As I recall, Al recording his first album at 36 years of age. By practically all standards, that is late for most musicians, but as Paul Mason once said 'We will sell no wine before its time!'
He was not only a great singer but a wonderful human being as well. He performed an amazing act of kindness that I witnessed, by singing this same tune 🙏🏽
Was moved to tears when I first saw this video (-_-) Incredible talent

As much as I love Take 5, by various different artists (namely GW Jr); I must say this is most insane version I have heard. Absolutely love it.
Rest in Peace Al J~ Bumpin your music all day!!

This is why I loved this man and his music!!
Just simply amazing.! Jazz, rap, beat boxing, ( before the genre had a definition, ) all there in one special brew. This is genius.
I have been a fan from 1977, still honored to be here and seen him in concert.
Rest easy Al Jarreau he was best skatter to ever do it. He was so free in spirit. Love this video 🎤💛👑🎵🎵💛🎤
My top fave of Al Jarreau! Been THE biggest fan of Al Jarreau since my first concert in Philly in the 70's! Loved his shows during the Summer at The Mann Music Center during the 80's...still my go to artist for chill mode! Truly gifted vocally& musically!
RIP to the master of jazz vocals with R&B twist Al Jarreau
This vocal virtuoso just seems to soar to the high heavens on wings of silver and that voice never ceases to amaze and stuns us with each rendition.
A truly natural musician and performer who kept playing until his last breath. R.I.P Al Jarreau.
Whoever is on the Fender Rhodes knows how to PLAY that keyboard!!!! Beautiful playing!!! That whole band is nuts!! Miss ya Al Jarreau!!! You were the best!!!

So you say TOM CANNING knows how to play the keyboard. That's very generous of you!
