New version of The Hours by Philip Glass arranged for piano solo by Michael Riesman and Nico Muhly (with some edits made by me) and recorded in a small wooden church in a remote Dutch village using a 70-something years old C. Bechstein Model C grand piano, which most definitely contributed to achieving a unique sound and atmosphere:

Once, I loved a woman, I still do, but she never loved me back. This music takes me to her, in a place without boundaries, without time, without age. And whilst the music plays, I feel loved. And I don't want the music to end, so I play it again and again for hours. Always the love. Always the hours.
That's very sweet and you've expressed it beautifully. Music can do that for us in a way perhaps no other art form can. It's a marvel of human creation.
You should be a poet or a writer, this comment really made me feel something. This music really does inspire emotion, Im glad you could feel it!

Could be my words. I do the same, but it’s for a man I loved but was never loved back, it’s 20 years now, 175 316.255 hours. This music takes me back to him and makes me feel loved.
I am a classically trained piano player since I was 7 (I am 43), and I firmly believe that The Poet Acts is one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed (and it get even prettier when it’s played piano-only). I can’t believe why this OST didn’t win an Oscar.
Because the selection team didn’t understand, it’s pure emotion and communicate with soul

I have given up Rock and Roll for Philip Glass' music. Life has so much more meaning now.
The wonderful part of life is you can appreciate each genre of music for what it is. You don't have to give up anything.
Some composers have the ability to send strong messages and vibrate our heartstrings in such a way that can truly transform oneself.
Harold, are you familiar with his operas, especially "Satyagraha" and Akhnaten"? We saw "Satyagraha" at the Met back in 2011, and I still count it as one of the most moving experiences of my life, musical or otherwise. We'll be at the Met for this season's "Akhnaten" as well. Please, look these up and delve into them. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
@@narennallapareddy2994 i will sometmes play Glass on youtube and Godspeed! You Black Emperor on archive.org simultaneously
He wrote a symphony with David Bowie and Brian Eno, so he has some respect for rock and roll
Many years ago during college I spent a Saturday helping a Swiss master pastry chef shuttle deserts to a faculty dinner. He saw me looking longingly at the Napoleons he was finishing. He cut a piece of it for me. I tasted it and said to him, "Oh my god! How can anything taste this incredibly amazing?" He smiled proudly and asked, "Would you like another?" When I tried to describe the music of Philip Glass, I immediately thought about that Napoleon. Incredibly amazing. Sometimes I wonder if I worthy enough to listen to it. I feel so privileged to live in a time when I can access this kind of beauty anytime I want.
What did you answer him when he asked if you would like another one. And how did he respond to your answer.
@@jaaps772 Well, I said "yes," and he have me another piece.
I’m 70 year old Brit. Wish I could play like you do. I watch this video over many times. Love it
The pauses in "I'm going to make a cake" have never been so well achieved. Thank you.
I've been listening to his piano music every day for months, but this one remains one of my favorites. Brilliant composition, brilliant playing, beautiful sound.
Philippe Glass, I’ve finished reading your Book.. what a journey of your life and your music.
Words without Music? loved his book as well.
It makes me cry and so sad for all that has passed and all that has ended, friendships, lovers, the time that was wasted that in retrospect should of been treasured...memories without the clarity they use to have but still with the pain and regret of yesterday....and....I love it.
Glad that Mr. Glass drove that taxi so he could write the kind of music he wanted to write and so classical lovers could hear new music with melody, rhythm, harmony and intelligence. Woot!
to my mind, "The Hours" is one of the most remarkable movies ever made...
I've been so stressed out recently that I really need a decent night's sleep. I can't wait to get to sleep. These compliments make me feel unique and all that. You guys are fantastic. To be honest, I can't thank you all enough. Good night, and rest well. Sleep is quite essential, and you require it.
J'ai tellement aimé le film !!! cette musique si envoûtante que j'écoute régulièrement ! et la musique de Philip Glass en général ! Bravo
"The Hours" is one of my most favorite movie & soundtrack and this cover is just absolutely amazing. I've listened to it multiple times now What a lark, what a plunge!
This is stunningly beautiful. Gripping. Uplifting. Melancholic. Energising. Insightful. Delicate. Oh, to be able to play the piano with such emotional intelligence and wisdom. Thank you
yes. the superlatives could go on and on. and on and on and on...............love.
Llega a el alma.esta música, muy gratificante. Gracias.
This is good writing music. The constant repetition and variation in this soundtrack are hypnotic; the music puts you in a productive trance and squeezes out just enough emotion to keep you engaged, but not a surfeit of feeling that will distract you.
the levels on an unwelcomed friend...wow a lovely roller coaster.
yes fantastic...wow such an experience. great tune.
Absolutely Great performance. Philip Glass is ONE OF THE GREATEST Composer in history of music.
Haunting music from a haunting film.
This sound has deep meaning, my heart knows it well, it is part of me. I have lost people in my life, this brings comfort and strength.
Le merveilleux film The Hours m'a emportée jusqu'ici. La musique de Philip Glass est magnifique.
how can a human being play this music so absolutely extremely perfectly? i cried .
I cried as well
Think tittle is perfect. When song starts, i feel that it's not the beginning, that pianist was playing it somewhere, sometime, far, far away; and that i just appeared there in order to listen to it forever and more.
So enigmatic, deep and reflective, especially when considered with the film 'THE HOURS'. Thank you for sharing.
Quelle beauté! Quelle joie de pouvoir s'exprimer ainsi ! C'est merveilleux! merci Philip Glass...
I was trying to write while listening to this, and was doing well for a while, then felt like I was part of a life's work montage in a movie. I suppose that is success!
this piano version of the Hours absolutely blows me away. The composition is magnificent, as is the performance.
I love the piano compositions of Philip Glass. I read posts, obviously from trained musicians, that point out that he is not really all that much of a great talent, and I try and listen to as many great composers that I can but, other than Rachmaninoff, they just don't exhibit the beautiful, pounding passion of Philip Glass. Every day I keep coming back to give him a listen. As an artist, I find him to be my muse.
Sometimes the greatest beauty comes from simplicity. As a pianist, I can see that Glass uses many simple and common techniques in composing his pieces, but it's not about how "easy" it is, but about how masterfully it's executed. In this, Philip Glass is a master. I absolutely adore his music, and it soothes my pianist's soul to listen to it. And this artist here plays with such mastery and emotion that you're carried away into deep thought by listening. THAT is true musicianship. Bravo.
I agree for the most part. Have you ever heard performances by Claudio Arrau on the piano, though?
@@liliangomezalvarez9095 I haven't, but I'll have to check him out now. Thank you!
Glass has this ability to play music like he say "I'm too tired, let my hands take over" and the hands still sound great.
Fantastic. From Metamorphosis to The hours was a logical progression. And an emotional one too, since Kafka and Woolf were important influences while I was growing up. It's only right that they should be the solace in my old age. Many thanks for this beautiful performance.
Sublime and hauntingly beautiful
Sally, I think I'll buy the flowers myself
Flowers? What flowers? Oh Jeezus christ!
Thank you.
dentro de 400 años sera escuchado y recordado de la misma manera en la que hoy escuchamos a Motzart, Phillip Glass ya es un clasico.
I had "An Unwelcomed Friend" playing on loop for a couple days straight. What a marvelous piece.
Exactly et la scène du film qui l'accompagne est magistrale
I'm about to cry, this is so beautiful, loved his hands and arms playing the piano, perfect!
glass will do that to you if properly performed...
P R E C I S E L Y , Erica. i dream of meeting the man and mind of those sensual hands and arms. i think i'd vaporize with ecstasy.
Талантливый, вдумчивый музыкант, прекрасный инструмент, шикарный звук. Спасибо, маэстро!
I don't know who you are but your performance of this is extremely powerful. Bravo! Absolutely incredible.
Thank you!
seriously, dude. you fuckin' nailed it! love it!!!!!
I agree
i know i said i wouldn't comment anymore but i believe i have found my new favorite composer for the time. tearing herself away....wow what a piece
This movie and soundtrack changed my life 🖤
Same here x
i have never claimed to be "into classical music," but Phillip Glass has always managed to tickle some part of my brain. I have severe adhd and normally would not find lyricless music worth listening to intently.. but this.. it's somehow "more."
I wonder if you've listened to Hans Zimmer soundtracks, especially the ones for Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons?
Amazing playing!
Thank you, Graham!
Que trilha sonora belíssima! 🇧🇷
Dead Things is one of the most beautiful compositions I've ever heard.
Just truly one of most expressive and coherent film soundtracks. This interpretation is definitely the best and most pianistic, I can’t get enough of it! Bravo!!
I had never heard of Philip Glass, nor had I heard about the movie of this sound track. But this was one of the most relaxing and yet moving 45 minutes I've had this year. Thank you to all involved in making this piece of art.
I would get as an intro "Glassworks" and Einstein on the Beach"
You must see The Hours !
Unlike a lot of piano music, this is packed with feeling, for me.
@davi duly noted.
Beautiful.Listened as i watched sunrise over Lake Tahoe with storm clouds. Both are inspiring in this time of Covid-19.

you are indescribable. unbearably expressive, in love with the music you play; as i am with....
morning passages is a masterpiece
Thank you for this interpretation which becomes my comfort when I am depressed.
Thank you! Why would anyone give thumbs down to this is beyond me...
Thank you! Well, tastes are subjective.
Glass plays me, and it is in such a deep and mournful minor key. I love it!
omg - yes. i've poured out my insides with countless comments on Coversart's interpretation of Glass' pieces - never finding the words to express his sensual perfection. but you did: "he plays me"
Stunning and heartfelt performance ❤It always helps me to banish my darkest thoughts for a while. I do cry but the insane fear stops. Thank you, you belong among other things to my salvation anchors. I miss my piano so much. Someday I hope to be able to buy a used piano again. My dexterity is limited by my rheumatism, but movement is supposed to do good.😄
I love this piano music. It is transformational and conscious.
Some nights, I open a bottle of wine, crank up my Yamaha A-S2200 integrated amplifier powering Focal Aria 948 speakers, turn on the Yamaha CD-S2100 CD player with a great USB DAC, play the recording of the phone call PG made to me on my birthday recorded onto a CD, then play Coversart's fantastic interpretation of PG's "The Hours" played on a Yamaha piano.
masterpiece, so melancholic, simply outstanding...exact music for an intriguing and troubled person as Virginia Woolf - Film is fantastic too!
Full of emotion. Powerful.
Bellísima obra y magistralmente interpretada. GRACIAS GRACIAS GRACIAS
Gracias a ti también!
Mec, bravo, j'ai écrit une lettre d'amour en écoutant ton interprétation, ces quarante minutes sont passées comme un songe...
This performance is quaint
Fantastic performance! Thank you.
Philip Morris Glass is one of the best composers of the late 20th century! virtuous pianist! erudite! intellectual! and started his artistic career in the music industry when I was a year old! (1972) and released the first album in 1973! "Music in Similar Motion / Music In 5ths" and his vast muiscal work, with soundtracks! etc ... there are about 86 (eighty-six) :) discs released on the market! out the cameos! for other artists and also composers! I have physically three masterpieces that are for me "The Thin Blue Line (Original Soundtrack) 1999" Philip Glass: Music in Twelve Parts "1993 and finally" Philip Glass: The Complete Sony Recordings "2016. It has already released in 2020, four records that I haven't heard yet. All this work and talent, doesn't match the popular saying! Portuguese "the greater the quantity; lower is the quality "with P.Glass! it is unique and timeless! Thank you very much for existing ....
Psychologically compelling and haunting. Rivers of disturbing shadows chasing life around every corner turned on journey to grave.
By far the most compelling piano performance to date ! Ebb and flow, tempi, all beautifully convey a ‘depth of emotion’, not heard in other solo versions.
yes, victor, as sensitively written as the music is played.
I listen to your videos every day at work.... painfully beautiful...
Thank you for this wonderful performing music by Philip Glass. It's really amazing
I've always loved the music from this album, but I had never taken my time to watch The Hours. Today, I had to watch that movie for a university project and it gives the music an entirely different meaning. Just as good, but so, so much more emotional, as if that was even possible. Great music for a great movie
me encanta como me lleva de la mano hasta la melancolía, este completo de las horas de Philip Glass
This is incredibly beautiful - thank you Michael and Nico! I listen to it often at work to help me focus, or at home to relax.
Magnifique musique et magnifique film. A voir absolument .... plusieurs fois...
Beautiful rendition of a beautiful piece of music. Thanks.
This is so amazingly beautiful, and performed beautifully, beyond words. I can listen to this a million times, and each time I have to cry. Thank you so much, Coversart. You are a blessed musician, and I am deeply in love with your hands.
Thank you!
yes quistomatic. me too. his choice of works and his unsurpassable playing. and - his hands.
Marvellous... I 'm always listening this music. Thank you!
I love the way you play, so clear and full of energy! I often listen to Metamorphosis and now this came by and I recognized your way of playing.
I love Philip Glass. The Hours was such a pretentious movie, but the music is classic Philip Glass.
All I can say is Bravo! Awesome. Your hands on the ivory keys are lovely!
I love your playing and takes on these tunes that are so familiar to me. Thank you!
really love this recording you made. Love watching your hands too. I am just awakening to the beauty and power of Phillip Glass' music and your interpretation is very moving and revealing.
Wow, what a powerful and moving performance. Thank you so much for uploading. :) I'm amazed by the ethereal quality you can bring to these pieces, particularly the first.
So gorgeous! Thank you for sharing your incredible talents.

Stunning! Thank you.
Realmente esta música es un lugar a donde ir, donde espacio y tiempo no existe.
ABSOLUMENT ADMIRABLE ! TRÈS FORT ET TRÈS ÉMOUVANT !
I have several interpretations of this. While I am not qualified to judge I will say that I found the dynamics (I think that is the right word) and the tempos to be fabulous. Or, to put it another way: Loved it!
So lovely! Thank you in all dimensions!
Beautiful music, beautifully interpreted. I love to listen to your Philip Glass recordings.
...and it makes me feel very happy. Thank you!
Whaaaa??! I cannot compete with a standard such as this, damnit! Yes, I can play it, about half the tempo!
Every time you make a new video, it's my new favorite! Thank you for all your work, your videos are so beautiful. They help me study, they help me manage stress, they help me focus on life. You are the most amazing channel!
