It's fascinating how subtle some of the plot lines were in older movies as they alluded to things which could not be said openly. Note the older bachelor of the house and his long term guest who lives there without paying rent. History would remember them as "good friends".

Set in 1919... my stepfather would have been 10 years old. This film setting rather broadsided me, as I realized why Papa was the man he was. He was truly from a different era. My birth father had died when I was but a baby, in 1964. I was the youngest of 7 children. Mama remarried in 2 years, to a man 16 years her senior... they spent 40 years together, and it seemed they loved each other more with every passing year... Papa passed in 2005, at 96 years of age. He was truly a good man.

In the past I have seen Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" in theater and films, but now, I have found that the "Country Life" film version is a wonderful one, and I fully enjoyed it. Thank you. I have come upon this film quite by chance browsing something else on youtube , I am a fan of Greta Scacchi and then I noticed my cousin Sam Neill , so decided to have a look . I have read up the plot of Uncle Vanya , so have some idea of the story , i am a little way into the film on my computer enjoying it very much . I am now going to save it so see on my 55" Smart television , it looks a great film with some very funny moments.

Found this by accident, when trawling for something to watch. So glad I did. Loved it. So much humour and pathos, with excellent acting. Ignore the shallow people here whose idea of a good film is clearly someone in a superhero suit and loads of CGI; hopefully they will get it when they grow up. If they ever do.

Already saw it on the Flemish TV, by chance, about twenty years ago. Aussies are definitely making very remarkable films… This one is the best ‘Uncle Vanyia’ adaptation I know, alongside Andrei Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky’s ‘real thing’ (clearly spoken in Russian). Two different atmospheres, but both do work perfectly.

This is my kind of movie. Googie Withers was one of my favourites from the 1940s so good to see her still going strong in 1994. Sam Neill is gorgeous and reminds me of another of my faves, Michael Kitchen. Uncle Jack was fantastic and Wally got the best lines.

Found this by accident, when trawling for something to watch. So glad I did. Loved it. So much humour and pathos, with excellent acting. Ignore the shallow people here whose idea of a good film is clearly someone in a superhero suit and loads of CGI; hopefully they will get it when they grow up. If they ever do.
And for those who care for some fine French wine.. 🍷

Already saw it on the Flemish TV, by chance, about twenty years ago. Aussies are definitely making very remarkable films… This one is the best ‘Uncle Vanyia’ adaptation I know, alongside Andrei Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky’s ‘real thing’ (clearly spoken in Russian). Two different atmospheres, but both do work perfectly.
And here's a funny little tidbit : some years back Sam Neill was talking about his struggling with sex addiction . I'm not sure if it was here on KZhead or what
This is my kind of movie. Googie Withers was one of my favourites from the 1940s so good to see her still going strong in 1994. Sam Neill is gorgeous and reminds me of another of my faves, Michael Kitchen. Uncle Jack was fantastic and Wally got the best lines.
