Hi Jay, I got this same laptop about 2 years ago, and man, I love it. I upgraded to 32GB ram, a 2 TB nvme and a 2" SATA 2 TB. I usually play Resident Evil games and Warzone, and still going hard. Using it for work and the same (I'm an architect and I used for like rendering and on the go sketching). Greetings from Mexico!!!

@@viq234 I got a fix for that.. U gotta downgrade.. Never update the driver... Not joking.. So the way u do this... Is by manually finding a driver from ur.. Winsys folder?... I think... Dont completely remember the file path... There's a tutorial for it online...

Just a FYI, you mention the fans are loud at 15:40 but they are likely that loud only because you manually set the "turbo" mode on which throws out balance of fan noise / perf. The perf is still almost as good in the regular perf mode and likely also good enough in the silent mode, which prioritize no fan noise over no thermal throttling.
I bought this laptop for work in December 2020 with the intention to use it as a gaming device if needed. It's been amazing. I added 16gb ram and some storage (I got the smaller battery with a 2.5" drive bay). Been using this almost 18 hours per day between work and gaming since I got it. I love this little machine. Thanks for giving it a nice review. Unfortunately the heat is an issue though if gaming, needs a cooling pad, but that's my only gripe.
Look into Undervolting (Throttlestop) the Cpu, and Undervolting the Gpu with a custom curve (Afterburner). With both of those done, you should get 1) better performance 2) cooler temps 3) lower fan noise

@@LeythLegacy No downsides whatsoever. As long as its stable. Some of the intel 10th gen cpu's could be locked out of undervolting by Bios updates and the like though, so one has to do research to see if they are able to undervolt their cpu.
@@slickrounder6045 doesn't Throttlestop bypass that in newer versions, since it isn't using BIOS hooks since some PCs don't even have those options turned on in the BIOS at all?
I always repaste the cpu and gpu with arctic cool thermal paste. The manufacturer globs way too much paste on those. You'll see an immediate difference in thermals. Undervolting is a bit tricky to find the sweet spot since if you run very intensive games, the PC will shutdown on you due to starving the cpu.

You should do a follow up video where you upgrade the ram and storage to see how much of an improvement it might have. Maybe replace any thermal paste with something better to see if it help keep everything cooler.
Thermal Grizzly doesn't help. it keeps throttling.
It won't help lower temps because your are more effectively removing heat that both the CPU and GPU will boost higher. If you seen the video from LTT where they add a heatsink to the Steam Deck. It didn't run cooler. It just boosted higher which gave better FPS to the games.

so I got a similar laptop just recnetly with a 3050, 8 gig ddr5 and AMD 6600H. my 3d Mark score was 5325 which is average with others. I then upgraded the ram to 32 gig andjumped up to 5614 giving it a "legandary" score on 3d mark. I then found Lenovo overclock for the GPU and also stuck it right next to my AC on full blast and am now at the world record for people with the same hardware at 5794. I will say this gen of budget gaming laptops are pretty impressive.

I purchased an ASUS Tuf laptop that was supposed to be a 120hz monitor through Amazon about 4-5 years back. When I received it, I eventually realized I was sent a 60hz model. The computer was (and still is) solid, well constructed and has held up over time and many travels. I just implore all who receive their product to double check the model number you ordered vs the model number on the actual unit you receive. And the specifications.

Love the TUF laptops! I had one like that, then decided to go big and bought an F17 FX706. 11800H 8c/16t with a 3060 and 32GB of RAM. I plan to keep mine forever! Solid laptops for anyone in the market.
The inclusion of the warranty that covers accidental damage is extremely impressive! As long as it’s not loaded with “well, it would be if it wasn’t for” type of garbage to where you are almost barred from getting it warrantied.
I can't vouch for their warranty repair quality although. (purchased September 2021) Last March I had issues with the keyboard where the I, k and other keys stopped working. I sent it off for warranty repair and it was working again. The issue then returned a week after the 1 Year Warranty expired with the exact same issue with the exact same keys.

@@Ivyticrea Yeah. It's a really good laptop outside of the keyboard (rn I'm using an external wireless keyboard) and it's pretty simple to replace it as a user (you can just out right buy the keyboard unit and replace it). It's a shame my experience with their warranty has been poor.

One of the things I have always done with any pre-built or laptop system, is completely re-format and re-install a fresh copy of windows. I know for most normal users that wouldn't be a thing they would probably do, but its definitely something I would recommend people to do, just cause there is so many things that end up on those systems that are just bloatware and don't really add anything.
I'm exactly the same. It's probably quicker than going through and uninstalling all the crap that's on there, and removes any chance of missing something.
I did this too with my older laptop. I will say though, the typical user will definitely have issues getting the bare functionality working. Depending on the manufacturer, some things like the Fn keys and such are either separate software or part of that "manufacturer" suite. Easy for use to figure out, but I can see the typical user going insane and throwing the thing out the window when they learn that stuff aint just built in 😂
I also tend to do that, but with Windows 11, the hard drive has some encryption on it that prevents the simple re-image that I have done in the past. So so far I haven't bothered. I didn't find this laptop (I have the similar A15 model of this same laptop) to be too bad for bloatware.
Actually, I have a Z15 that's a couple of years old, and there wasn't much crapware that doesn't end up on any non-Enterprise Windows install anyway (Candy Crush FFS‽). The only thing I bothered with was uninstalling McAfee. Some of the ASUS software is actually useful, like the charge limiter to preserve the battery and the BIOS update software. It also came with Windows Store codes for GoW4 and AoE Definitive Edition. As I recall, mine only has a single m.2 slot. It came with a SATA m.2, but supports nvME. I stuck a 500GB EVO 860 in the 2.5" slot to up the storage to 756GB.
@@MaddJakdlast week I had two 11th gen laptops to format for some friends, I'm surprised neither of them had touchpad drivers on setup (one of them not even had full USB to plug a mouse, only USB-C). And one of them didn't recognized the NVME drive and had to manually download Intel storage drivers to be able to recognize the drive on setup. And here's the kicker as of why they asked my "tech savvy" help: both had a corrupted setup after Windows Update and putting to sleep
The entry level versions of the ASUS TUF / ROG have had very reasonable prices for a while now, probably to attract customers. Getting one of those and updating RAM + possibly the SSD yourself can save you hundreds of bucks while still getting a quite powerful machine. I got my notebook for $650 as well, and ended up with $800 total after the upgrades while machines already equipped with those went for $1,300. The two biggest issues are RAM ( 8GB is barely enough for Windows ) and getting a decent dedicated GPU, and only having to look out for the latter makes finding something cheap a lot easier.
Yeah these days 16gb should be the minimum especially considering it costs the same to make. They just want to push you into their higher tier models.

I have the A15 model which I bought last year: Ryzen 5800H, integrated Radeon something something graphics, and a RTX 3060. I added 8gb (it came with 8 gigs just like the one in the video) and this thing flies. It can actually make use of DLSS which always help push everything to 60 fps in High settings which is better than what I can say on my main setup with a 1080Ti 1440p (Cyberpunk, Darktide, etc). And I read in the website that the new models have the latest Ryzen gen plus RTX 4000 series, so that's a great purchase and I fully recommend it.
Depending on the region, the 90Wh Battery is only available on FA506IV / FA506IU. Also the Accidental Warranty may not be available as standard on some region but can be purchased as an option depending on the retailer. Overall this is a good laptop 😃
Sounds like you have to choose between the warranty or the bigger battery. To be honest, I wouldn't game without it being plugged in anyway, so I'd want the warranty.
@@TheZoenGaming Yeah you definitely want 100% of the GPU for gaming and it's always a wise choice to get the extended warranty. You can always upgrade the battery later on any of Asus's authorised service center.
modify the power IC chip and chokes and your battery will charge better.
90w battery or sata option is diff btwn those models not the warranty. 90w battery will take up sata drive area also.
Mmmm. Looking online specifically for those model numbers and they are hard to find.... Seems the 506lh is the base model and the one reviewed here.
I'd be interested to see what the performance is like with windows bloat removed, dual channel ram running at the rated 3200 and undervolting/overclocking. Making low end hardware work faster is more interesting than just throwing money at higher end parts to me.
Its been my experience that laptop BIOS are super pared down...which means RAM QVL compatibility is that much more important. Do your research ahead of time because you may not even be given the option to enable/ modify XMP profiles.
Quite good for the money, I bought my sons each on about a year ago. Theres are Ryzen 7 models, still with a 1650. They originally came with a single 3200 8 gig stick, we got a pack of 2 8 gig sticks in a kit, split them and put one in each laptop and it works perfect. XMP or should I say DOCP enabled. They run discord, games and youtube almost perpetually. Im not sure my oldest' has even been shut off save for me cleaning it/updating a couple times.
I had a similar sh1te years back. Better RAM, a cooling pad, overclock 1650 (especially VRAM), make sure to close all background processes. Now cyberpunk runs at 50 FPS med/high (CPU bottleneck btw), Doom Eternal on medium will run at 90fps. You can squeeze a lot of performance out of the thing. But really, don't buy this. Buy a 3060 model.
ive used a similar model of this laptop and with limited bloatware and upgraded ram, honestly such a great deal!
On lower-end hardware, Linux has become a legitimate option thanks mostly in part of Gabe Newell and his ambition to be Microsoft-independent. I literally see no point to be using Windows anymore for most use cases. Riot is holding most end-users back by not accommodating open-source options. People are still cheating on Valorent while using Windows. The system in use doesn't stop anybody from being a scumbag, it only delays the inevitable. It's like the transgender bathroom problem - most TG persons aren't going to r8pe people, but it's used as an anti-equality fear tactic. Same with Linux! most Linux users just want to use their PC and aren't going to do petty hacking things in a video game but people are still utterly convinced Linux users' sole interest is hacking. Wish people would stop thinking like that…
I have the F17 and I can say from experience that doubling the ram really helps out the fps with this laptop. The extra nvme slot for fps gaming and a 2.5" sata port for cheap high capacity storage. May not be as good as my custom rig but it does the job on the go! For what its worth though you could build an older dell for less money and still get similar performance. Maybe not as fast but still acceptable.
Noticed a massive cooling improvement simply by reapplying the thermal paste. Crazy that was needed brand new out of the box. Give it a shot if your turbo boost is instantly hitting 90+.

@@Abdullah-it2dx When idle? Maybe clean the fans and exhaust ports, re apply thermal paste and maybe check the tast manager for programs which overuse your cpu when not doint anything. But cleaning should help a lot.
@@Abdullah-it2dx agreed with M.P.. my laptop from 2009 used to go 90C+ after about 3 months purely from cat hair eventually clogging the heatsinks up. cleaning it out with an ESD safe brush + canned air and it would return to about 75C. and then I eventualy replaced the thermal paste with arctic mx-4 and it maxed out at 60C while BENCHMARKING (about 50C in game) so I'd highly recommend to use it (it's cheaper than noctua's paste with very similar performance, lasts 4+ years, electrically non-conductive so it won't damage circuitry, and viscous so it's perfect for direct-die cooling and resisting the heat-pump effect. you just have to make sure to manually spread it with a spudger/piece of card)
@Don Greek to be fair, most drivers don't know how to service their own car either. it's just one of those things. the hardest part is to overcome the fear of your first time, which is why we have to be supportive and informative when people show interest. afterall, it's not like anyone is born with all the knowledge and experience built into them
@@glebglub I’d recommend PTM7950 over any thermal pastes for laptop at this moment. I can never go back to regular thermal paste. Its has lasted me 3-4 months without any issues, pump out is nonexistent, and it is almost on-par with liquid metal.
You had me at "1 year accidental damage protection". That's freaking huge. I bought a pair of Skullcandy headphones last year that came with a Allstate warranty. After about 4 months, the earcups material starting separating from the housing. No fault of mine. They legit told me that wasn't covered by warranty. So Asus is taking a big leap here and I applaud them.
Oh man I had skull candy with Best Buy protection and got like 3 free replacements. It was awesome.
Might sound weird but I always buy headphones that I can buy lambskin earpad replacements for.. expensive but they last and are very comfortable.

Skullcandy are not headphones, aren't they just cosmetic accessories? I've seen them in a store a while back, looked like toys for 10yo girls :-P. FYI the accidental damage protection isn't included, they just include info about it in case you want to buy it, like most makers do.
Lemon has upto 4 year accident protection. Of course the first year is free the other years you gotta pay for.
I bought the same a year ago with an i5 10th gen as an outlet. Upgraded the ram to 16gb. Also with 2 m.2 ports (one already with an 500gb NVME drive) and 1 sata port, so added 1tb nvme drive and 1tb ssd sata drive. And Nvidia GTX 1650. Dual-boot Windows 10 and Linux. Enough for some games and photo/video production. Incredible upgradable laptop than those overprized Apple... Happy new year and greetings from Brussels (Belgium) !
My best friend actually bought this laptop cause he needed an upgrade, he wanted to stream and code but used a 2012 laptop with a TN panel. He bought this one and used the hell out of it. The downside is that it gets really loud and noisy because the cpu doesn't get enough air. Luckily I was borrowing a 3D printer at the time and someone on thingiverse made feet that raised this specific laptop, it even came with a hole for the power plug. Made it more comfortable and basically solved the heating/noise problem
I watched this video on this very laptop. I haven´t opened it up, so thank you for that. Now I know how to open it and what to expect inside...and what I can upgrade. Love your videos dude!
Honestly, the TUF Gaming series are surprisingly great for what they're priced at. I had gotten the A17 less than a year ago for $700 at Best Buy and it exceeded my expectations. Upgraded the RAM to 32GB, added a 2TB m.2 ontop of the one it came with and it works like a dream. Surpised that the TUF series kept going on sale too for some odd reason
best buy has one with a 3050 now for $679. I know the 3050 isnt anything super hot but its better than a 1650.
I got the 3050 one and its honestly great for gaming. The real bottleneck is the 6core cpu on sandbox open world games. However i can perfectly play cyberpunk, elden ring, new world at high/max settings on 36 fps (equivalent of 30 on a 144hz monitor). Any other game that isn't a sandbox mmo it will amazing with dlss. As a ps4 pro gamer. Going from medium to low at 30fps to high max at 36fps is a big step in budget gaming. With dlss at medium you should be able to play many games at 72fps. The biggest step up imo is the 144hz monitor. Low fps Gaming feels so much better on a high refresh rate monitor. You need to get an extra 8gb stick of ram.
@@jprec5174 ehhh you keep saying DLSS but keep also forgetting that's basically just like saying "and for raytracing." It's like, DLSS isn't a magic button. It has to be manually implemented into the game by the devs themselves. Which makes it all but useless for like 99.8% of games out there. Don't get me wrong, if you don't mind the smudging and artifacting and all the nuisances of DLSS, it's fine, and that and FSR are able to be really great additions to the budget gamer who's on like 1080p 36fps medium settings, sure, to bring that up to 72fps is more than worth every single thing about upscaling. But the problem is...GTA V doesn't have DLSS. Witcher 3 doesn't have DLSS. I'm pretty sure Scorn doesn't have DLSS. Pathfinder Kingmaker, no DLSS, ditto for [insert nearly any non-AAA game]. If it's Cyberpunk or something where you actually have (and probably need) an upscaler implemented it's cool, it's just some of you guys keep making this sound like some magical thing that makes all games go faster. It doesn't. And sorry but I really gave the 3050 a lot of shit, deservedly, for the outrageous prices it goes for (that's literally a $200 card max; dumb kids are still paying double what it's worth, which is $190). At least on a laptop makes sense (like the 6500XT, which with its PCIe 3 lane issues, doesn't belong anywhere but a damn laptop tbqf at least the 6400 had real uses, albeit 80$ overpriced minimum). As per cores, lol a budget laptop is the last place I'd be concerned with core count. A hexcore is perfectly fine in a laptop, which is already a tightly crammed space and bad cooling so idk why the hell so many laptop makers insist on shitty i7's that overheat and throttle. A 8core CPU is definitely going to need lots of cooling, and it'll never be up to desktop spec. Idk I'm just really disappointed by how few games really take advantage all those cores, seeing how Intel stagnation set teh tone for gaming for ages and so now everything's basically designed to run on quadcores only where my main advantage I'm finding is that a i7 4800HQ can't do dick without serious throttling/stuttering in the background, I'm serious I tried playing a game and running firefox in background and the damn video started stuttering lol. So. There's that. Big time use case is the fact many (SHITTY) companies like Valve insist on turning their software into bloatware and forcing you to run said bloatware in backhround tasks in order to play game, so you literally cannot play Steam games on a HDD with 8gb of RAM and a 2gb graphics card anymore, because Steam literally uses all that up on itself. An octacore CPU is great for just leaving Steam, Gog Galaxy, and Epic on in the background, maybe a shitty Ubisoft or Paradox launcher too, Firefox for aggressively shitposting of course, a wordpad document, your RGB software, Ryzen Master, Adrenaline 2020 for watching your metrics graphs go brrrrr etc. A 3700x I basically don't have to care about background stuff whatsoever and I literally leave all aforementioned running while I play AAA games. A quadcore is still "fine" in this day, it's just you can't do anything in background at all and need to close down all tasks so good luck getting some streaming and capture going. A hexcore should still be plenty fine though, considering in reality you've probably got 2-4 more cores than you're even using to play most games (though bafflingly like you said, a lot of FPS and adventure titles seem to be the ones using those extra cores, sadly not the ones that'd benefit most like Cities Skylines and Universe Sandbox 2 ):
@@pandemicneetbux2110 do you even know what DLSS is? If a game doesn't use DLSS you can just use Nvidia image scaling. I don't even need DLSS or NIS. I can get games to run at 60-72fps just fine. Most shooters hit 72 to 144 (CSGO) just fine. I only mentioned 36fps on elden ring because it plays flawlessly at max settings at 36fps (which is not far off of what ps5/xboxSx are pushing on their quality modes (albeit they run at higher res). Elden Ring is notoriously unoptimized which is why i brought that example up. Drop the grass and shadows and you can hit 50-60 fps easily. I just hate framerates that bounce around all the time. Already tried New World. Plays flawlessly at 36fps on high/very high, or 60fps with med/low settings. Another game that's a notoriously unoptimized (especially in towns). For a little dinky laptop that is impressive. If i wanted to game hardcore i wouldve bought a proper pc.
For the most part it does great 👍. Games like Escape from Tarkov or anything past Battlefield 4(or hardline)and the new Modern Warfares or even Squad just doesn’t run well at 60 fps at any settings. I am very green when it comes to non console gaming and somebody with more experience could probably mess around with it and get it to run better. If you can be patient, I would save another 600 bucks and just put together a pc. It is something that is worth it, if you just have to play something and have fun and even at low settings you can have a more fun, varied experience than you probably would on a console. Mine has the Ryzen 5 gpu, but other than that they’re exactly the same 👍. Great video 🫵👍✌️
The outward design (except the brush look) is like the Acer Nitro 5. In terms of specs and price, it's quite similar. So good thing that they're keeping these at a reachable price

I have a very similar MSI laptop I picked up black friday 2021 - it has a 10500h six-core and a 60Hz panel with the 1650, and was just under $500. I added a second stick of RAM and a decent size SSD for storage. I'm in it for under $600, and I'm very happy with the performance for the price. Dual channel RAM is HUGE. The 144Hz panel on this one is nice, but I really don't mind my 60, especially with the 1650 - I don't play anything super twitchy anyway. CP2077 is totally playable with dual channel RAM.
I have the Acer Nitro 17.3" version of this laptop that I purchased a couple years back for about $100 more.. unadvertised Black Friday deal.. and its been a great laptop. The guts looked nearly identical to the Asus here. With added memory, a second drive and fresh Windows load it was definitely a steal. I enjoy watching your videos and find your team to be very entertaining. Looking forward to your next upload.

The 2.5 sata slot is useful if you happen to have an older laptop that's died and you want to pack that extra storage and access your old files.

Great review Jay, thank you. I bought a higher spec in the ASUS F15 range (Intel 12650H, RTX3060M, 16GB DDR5, 1TB M.2) and it is a fantastic machine. These are always worth a look because I found that other laptops had a major spec compromise at the same price point so are really good comparable value. It still has a single stick of DDR5 though - sigh. I will add another at some point, but to be honest, it is pretty fast (6 performance all HT, 4 E cores) even though it is hamstrung, even comparing it with my desktop (12700K).

I picked up a similar one for christmas. I got the Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3. It has a AMD 6600H, RTX 3050 and 8 gig DDR on sale for 599. I think its 679 right now. I then upgraded the ram to 32 gig DDR5 and it's amazingly powerful. Highly recomend if you want a budget laptop

Looks like a great deal. I've been using a TUF A15 that I bought about 18 months back (8-core 4800h, 16GB DDR4, and an 80W 1660 Ti with a 144Hz 1080P screen), and it's been awesome so far. Battery life is not the best, but I don't need an all-day battery either, so big deal. It was also only $1,000 normal store price back when I got it, so I always tell people to check out the TUF lineup when they're looking for a decent gaming laptop.
Even I have the same laptop, but with R5 4600H, 8GB DDR4 and a GTX 1650, all for around $625. Although I wish it had more RAM (as I run out of RAM pretty quickly when doing intensive work).

Thanks Jay! I have been looking at replacing my ASUS 2 in 1 from 2015. I want to jump up to a gaming laptop, all while I will be building myself a new desktop that can handle VR. Your video basically sold me on this laptop and I will probably pick one up in the next month or so. When I tried clicking on the link for the US, it just took me to the Amazon homepage, not the listing for the laptop.
I got one of these about a week ago for $870(aud), fitted a 2 1/2 inch drive for my game drive, so far loving this for my new daily driver / travel gaming rig, mine came with dual 8g sticks though. works so much better than my Dell with similar hardware I have had for 18months. First thing I do with any laptop is remover the bloat ware to better customise my experience. A tuning guide for this system would be great.
The keyboard, trackpad, and speakers all remind me of my old ROG laptop I bought a few years ago. They look the same, and the speakers do go really loud without peaking. The cooling is almost the same looking as well, except it has 2 pipes for both CPU and GPU and larger fans, but it has more room because it's a 17 inch. I'm completely happy with mine at $1200
This one is similarly speced out to my MSI GF65. The main difference is that the MSI came with a RTX 3060 and a 10500H. It was $799 on sale when I bought it 10 months ago. I immediately swapped out the RAM to put in 32GB and expanded with an extra 2TB ssd. That's my travel laptop when I'm on the road.

AFAIK GF63 is the equivalent of this one. It might have a 1650. I have an older GF63, and I remember having older version of this TUF model and a Acer Nitro model on my shortlist. Eventually decided to but the MSI due to its design.

I bought one a few months ago, and it performs so much better with 2 sticks of RAM than it does with the single stick it ships with. Even just adding a single stick of 8G RAM makes a bug difference in frame rates and being able to bump up the display settings. I never see less than 70 FPS when playing Back 4 Blood on medium graphics settings, and regularly hit 100 FPS during a fight. As for the speakers and fan noise; I almost always wear headphones, so it's not an issue. Also, in my mind the 48 Wh battery is preferable, because the 90 Wh battery option (which they originally shipped with on launch) prevents the use of the 2.5" drive bay. I also completely agree with Jay about the keyboard and trackpad. Both are nearly the equal of what was on my 2015 Macbook. I gamed with the Mac trackpad for years and could never understand why everyone was telling me that I was hampering myself until I used the trackpad on a HP laptop that was provided by my job. That was absolute crap, where the MAC trackpad (and the F15 trackpad) was just as responsive and accurate as a good gaming mouse.
I managed to snag the F17 with an 11th gen i5 and a 3050 for about $100 more than you paid for that in November, and it's been great for my little one. I still have an old 17" ROG 2nd gen i7 laptop that works to this day (the F17 was to replace that), so the Asus laptops hold up. Great value, and great for a casual gamer, a non-FPS gamer, or for a gamer who has to travel and doesn't want to break the bank when they do so they can also afford a home system. I'm glad you like it, as I know the one I bought my little one has loved.
I noticed in Dying Light medium settings dropped to DX11 instead of 12 which is more efficient. So you might have gotten better performance out of a high graphics quality preset for that game. IPS type probably means some kind of VA panel.

Yeah for real see this is why I sing Jay's praises, because despite the fact he's clearly a "retired"ish oldfriend coder/IT guy who's made plenty of money and can pretty much dick around with 3090's for fun, he still keeps in mind the little guy gamer. I have never seen anybody do it so well as Jay does, and I basically made fun of Linus for being so out of tune with us that he was building this alleged "shitbox" PC that was supposed to be e-waste tier....and it had a GTX 1070 in it. Over a year ago. I'm like, many men would kill for a 1070 right now. Jay meanwhile just straight up says "if you have a 980 you're not poor, and you're not suffering." And you know? He's right. Because he can really vibe with that sub-it'snotmuchbutit'smine tier poor tier where you're like "I have a Radeon 260. I wish I had your it's not much but it's mine PC :( " Like, RX 550, GTX 560 having, 1gb VRAM texture loading, HDD booting, 700mhz having kinda shitbox where you can basically not play new pixel games because "you require a directx version that is not supported." Even though it's a damn pixel game. Jay understands these feels. I am never going to stop liking Jay for this fact. He doesn't talk about a "mere" RTX 3070 or 6700XT or whatever, as if anything below 80/800 is for peons. So thank you Jay, truly. Many sufferings were had out there, and it's not just kids, I mean poorer adults, people in different countries with weird GPU markets and etc. If you ever look at the userbenchmark (gag I know) testing page where it shows all the people's systems in recent benchmarking it's wild. I've seen people testing systems in the wild where I wonder how they even got the thing.
Seems like a great option when you're on a budget. I have an ASUS ROG GL553VD for over seven years now (i7-7700HQ, GTX1050 4GB, 16GB RAM) and it's perfect for my needs. I can play Red Dead Redemption 2 on high settings and Skyrim with ~100 mods, although most ENBs are definitely a struggle at this point. I clean the dust off the fan every couple of months and reset it about once a year (because I lose sight of my files lol) and keep software updated, but it's starting to show signs of old age now. Randomly lagging touchpad and heat are the biggest issues (50C with only Chrome open as I type this comment, almost reaching 90C when gaming. You could probably cook an egg underneath the spacebar). It only has one fan which probably doesn't help a lot. I've been very happy with it though so if it happens to die one day, I might consider getting this one next. It costs about 1k where I live, though.

Nah. There's a 700 dollar Gigabyte laptop on Best Buy right now with a 3050ti and an 11400h. That extra 50 bucks would pay huge dividends here, a 3050ti is way the hell above a 1650 in performance (if not VRAM) and the 11400h is a pretty large step over a 10300h

Doing a video on what to do with a brand new laptop would be great for people. I’ve had my boss and many friends ask me to ‘fix’ their laptops cause they freeze. Main issue is all the bloatware.
Bought a TUF A15 FA506IC last year in April and it has been a decent daily driver so far Ryzen 7 4800, RTX 3050 and I added +8GB RAM I use this mainly for work (engineering programs and stuff) and for online gaming (I do not really play heavy games) Really recommended, I purchased this for around 930 bucks (converted value) and it's getting cheaper too now
I picked up one like these up during black friday deals. Best buy was selling these for 600$ (650 after tax). Bought an extra ssd and 8gb stick for ram and I gotta say i'm impressed by it. The speakers are great. Monitor is actually amazing 144hz with adaptive sync so even if you're playing games at 36 fps (equivalent of 30fps) it feels incredibly smooth. Note mine was an i5-11400h with 6 cores, and a rtx 3050 rated at 75w. The rtx 3050 is probably a sore point for gamers, but as long as a game allows DLSS you can game at impressive framerates. And if you hook it up to an external monitor you can use nvidia image scaling which is pretty impressive at boosting framerates.
Nice video, it would have been great if you could have also tested the performance after puting a second stick of RAM, just to see the performance difference.
Around Thanksgiving, this was right around 590 bucks. A really good deal for sure. Camel shows it as high as 770 at one point last year. While the 1650 card will do in a pinch, I'd go with the same F15 laptop, but with the Intel i5-11400H 16GB DDR4 512GB SSD | GeForce RTX 3050 4GB | + 32GB MicroSD Card for another 140 bucks
I agree, not a big difference in price yet you get so much more! The gpu upgrade alone is worth the extra money.

@Dark Joker 2 for tightly TGP limited products you often find that the 1650 outperforms the 3050 and 3060. That's why I didn't spend $500 more for a 3050 part a year ago. There's only so much ability to cool in a small form factor.

I bought the F17 (FX706) and love it. Have already updated the RAMM and added a second SSD. Going to swap to the bigger battery soon. Highly recommend the basic model and upgrading yourself. Save ya some money.
I got the A15 with rtx 3050. One thing I would recommend is definitely upgrade the ram to 16GB. 8GB If not enough and I had a huge frame rate Increase.
Would like to see how much better it would perform with some added memory, and what desktop one would build with the same budget. Then a head-on-head battle between them.

I bought one of these back in 2019 to use as a backup and upgraded the RAM and added an NVME. It's a very capable gaming laptop and it having a high refresh rate and freesync makes it very smooth

Last year I got my sister an ASUS Laptop (non TUF) with the exact same specs as that laptop. It cost €400 which is less than $400. It ran pretty well. It handled most games on high at 120 fps. It did not overheat, it never stuttered. Gotta say, apart from the build quality it is a pretty decent laptop for casual gamers. Also she takes care of her things, maybe that also contributes to it.

I bought a more recent TUF F15 (RTX3050 & I5 11400H) and I really like the power it packs for it's form factor and price. The USB-C port on this laptop also provides DisplayPort if you get a dongle. It has no issues running an Oculus Rift S. But as you said: it is really suitable for a mobile video editing rig, which is one of the reasons I bought it. Again, great value for it's price!
I have exactly the same model as you do, bought it because I wanted something to do on work trips and it has been great! Temps also drop a ton (and battery life improves a bit) with quick throttlestop undervolt, just remember to click "stop data" on throttlestop to make sure it does not drain the battery by constantly reading the sensors, its set to on by default.

@Dark Joker 2 I just ran Time Spy benchmark on mine and can confirm that the RTX3050 reported max board power draw of 74,9W with max temp of 80c and max hotspot of 90c while boosting to ~1950Mhz. These are stock results, no GPU adjustments, no cooling pad etc!

I have one. They are reasonably good for a Windows laptop PC for gaming. I have noticing that overheating can be a problem - what with most of the cooling coming from underneath - and that can sometimes cause it to crash. The screen is pretty decent quality.
I had been eyeballin' the Tuf Series laptops, though not for cheap or value, as opposed to them having some real ryzen and now all AMD options. Seeing how you can actually take the thing apart easily and do the typical upgrades makes it a done deal here. Gotta get on that when I can.
ya the accessibility is great maybe 8 small screws and bottom panel comes off and everything is right there on a platter
My wife has one of these with a Ryzen chip, it's pretty decent.
One thing you can do to fix the CPU temps is to turn off "Processor performance boost mode" within power settings (this requires unlocking thru registry, since it is not available by default within advanced options = KZhead the tutorial). I do have a Ryzen 5800h in my Legion 5, and the setting was set to "Aggressive" by default, which made it boost to max clock speeds all the time and run at a toasty 95+ Celsius. This might not apply to Intel CPU's thou, but it probably does, since it is a Windows setting. There are different settings available, if you still want it, I just chose to turn it off since it has enough power without it to do whatever I need, and I prefer decent 65-75 temps under load for parts longevity and ease of mind.
QuickCPU is a free program that allows boosting or limiting the max turbo boost and/or increasing or decreasing the voltage to the CPU to boost performance or limit heat. It works with Intel and has a fairly nice GUI for making those changes to reduce heat if needed

Asus is pretty solid when it comes to laptops price range, they could do better for bios customization (kinda like what I've seen with MSI) but for the past 7 years I've been using ROG strix laptops and they are such a nice experience
From what I know the main problem is less the performance and more about how long they last. Asus TUF and ROG laptops (dunno about the most recent ones tho) have a tendency of killing their cpu and/or mobo in 2-3 years. I got that from someone micro-soldering as his job and that gets a lot of those dead laptops with that same problem.

I got the AMD variant of this for some gaming but mostly IT-support and Virtualization purposes, had a few moments of thermal throttling but otherwise with my 16 gigs of RAM it works wonderfully for my purposes.. I do suffer from random Windows boot failures, could be the RAM or SSD having some problems, I do full shutdowns.
So far, as I use the said machine, its been great so far. I needed an upgrade cause of the game dev focus of our projects that year and so far its doing its job smoothly.

Not bad for the price. My local computer shop does have a killer deal on a gigabyte laptop equipped with a RTX3060 and Ryzen 5 5600H for just $95 more at around $745. I'd personally grab that for the just the minimal price increase that it is, but yeah still an extra ~$100.
Yea, I got myself a Gigabyte G5 KD in Sept 22. I think its pretty satisfactory, very fast with RTX 3060 and i5, however it does heat up quite fast. And requires few restarts cause the brightness keeps going wrong (maybe its just my laptop's defect) but hell, it boots up fast, so it doesnt cause much frustration to me. Graphics is reall good even if its at lower setting. One of the best buy I had in 2022.
Hi Jayz, great video so good in fact I bought this very laptop ! Upped the ram to 16gb added another nvme, the dual channel makes a difference right away. 8gb doing updates etc it struggled a bit. The performance for the price is unreal, witchcraft you might say. Asus knocked it out the park with this. And I didn’t even need it ha ha.

Got one of these during last blackfriday for about $600. Imo, the screen is a bit small, but it runs stuff like Warthunder silky smooth. A decent backup if I need to travel. Was hoping it'd have a port for my Oculus Rift S, but that's a no-go. Also, as PC hardware is advancing, a 1650 is going to be left in the dust if you're looking to try new releases. Though, it can do everything my current system (i5-6400, 1060) can do better in just about every way- but VR. Saving now for a new AMD 3D cpu and that 4070ti looks sweet- but even sweeter if it'd drop $50-$100. We're at a point in hardware where if you have an older system, even if you swap a single part, you might as well swap out the entire system- but to get anything worthwhile is looking like 2- $3k. That's like.. a used car.

I have the same laptop but with a 1650ti, I love this laptop but there still are a few things I don't like, such as the thermals and the numpad keys aren't done very well but these are common issues for a 2020 laptop. I got this on a sale for about $700 (july 2021) and its great for the price, I still am yet to upgrade the ram and maybe down the line the battery it can support upto 95wh, stock one has 48wh which is still decent

I recently looked at this in the UK at £530($645) but opted for there A15 for £599 ($730). Difference being a Ryzen 5 4600H (6C/12T) & 4GB RTX 3050. Very happy so far once ram was doubled as well
@Dark Joker 2 I know they come in various TDPs so hard to judge. The Asus Tuf A15 is 60W with 75W boost. I will run the benchmark Jay ran and post the result underneath soon
@Dark Joker 2 I ran Time Spy and found a score for the GTX 1650 in the A15 TUF to compare. It scored 3,538. RTX 3050 Mobile @ 40W was 3,325 so can't overcome the power deficit. 60W was 4,575 and 75W was 4856. Hope this helps

I use 1 of these daily for the last 6months and i luv it. I use it for DJing most and a bit of gaming...added another 8gb ram and a 1tb ssd. My only gripes are the lack of an FN lock and no light for NumLock. Not a deal breaker. Only other laptop in this price range that feels better that i've owned is the Legion 5.
My school has an e-sports team as an extracurricular activity, whilst we do have PCs that are used all the time now, we used to have these laptops (though, the GPU and CPU were slightly better, though I only remembered seeing the GPU being a 2060, so maybe the cpu was the same). Overall though, they were a good experience for when we had them, though for the games we played, which was only Overwatch and Valorant (that was all I played at least), the laptop was great for it.
This is truly a nice deal, with it sitting still at $614 as of writing. But in case anyone missed it, Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i (the RTX 3050 variant) also went on sale for only $649 last week.
Just get a steamdeck its more powerful than this laptop hands down

We got my son an Acer Nitro for black Friday that has the same panel, but with a Ryzen 5 5600H and an RTX3060 for $550 at Walmart. It's such a good value and actually may be faster than the i7 6800k GTX 1080Ti desktop that I handed down to him. EDIT: Just checked, we got it for $650 for black Friday. Still a much better value, IMO.
GTX 1080 Ti was never made for laptops, only GTX 1080 and a laptop exclusive GTX 1080 SLi
1080Ti has a 26% advantage over the 3060 Laptop version GPU, the Ryzen 5 5600H has similar performance to the i7 6800K, not bad for a laptop

I just picked up the 9th gen version of this for $400 cad. Was lightly used and looked brand new. Had a 1tb m.2 added but was to slow for the previous owner. Os was still installed on the hdd. Fresh windows install and moved os to the m.2 and it now runs perfect

Yes,its not as powerful as much higher laptop, but within this price, this rig can talk a lot. and been using this for around 2 years now,and this thing still perform right and never fail even once. LOVE IT
I got this laptop for my son to play World of Warcraft together and i'm pretty impressed by it. It does make a bit of noise when playing video games but not its fine. I actually used myself when traveling and such, really nice machine for this price. Also, you can upgrade the RAM and storage rather easily.
I got a Lenovo Ideapad gaming 3 with a 3050ti and 5600h for $750 I think now they have dropped down to ~$700 and it’s been an amazing laptop! I think it’s worth it to go into the $700-$750 price range if it’s possible because they are a big upgrade

I got the Gigabyte G5 MD from Best Buy for $550 and the price has fluctuated down to that point a couple times over the last couple months, would def recommend people in the market to keep an eye on it. Comes with an i5-11400H and RTX 3050 ti.
How many fps do you get in games?
@@flamewarrior1221 So far I don’t see anything not being playable. I’ve only played Darktide and the Witcher 3 Next Gen update on it. For Darktide on mixed mostly medium settings, 1080p, DLSS on, I get about 60 fps. With the Witcher 3 NG on mostly high, I get 60-80 in non city areas, and around 40 in cities. Since it’s a 30 series, being able to leverage DLSS is a big bonus. Still haven’t upgraded the memory, so I’m only working with 8 gb rn as well. Only negative I’ve seen so far is CPU temps in TW3 (who woulda thunk), getting up into the mid 90s, although on further research evidently this isn’t super uncommon on laptops, and with lower voltage the silicon degradation will be much slower than the CPU fans working overtime.
And both games are recent, and notoriously unoptimized releases. Older games, or even newer games on lower settings will def see higher frames, may even be able to take advantage of the 144 hz screen in some cases.
@@gamingsfinest3356 That is decent. I recently bought a 1650ti 4600h Legion 5 (512 gb and 8 gb ram) for 540 dollars. I saw that Gigabyte deal a few months after I bought my laptop and was not sure if I made a good decision, but it looks like there is only a 5-10 fps increase at max. The Gigabyte G5 is definitely a better deal, but for the games I play the Legion 5 does really well.
Just ordered one of these but went with the step up. The one in this video went up to $750, but for $700 i got the upgrade with a 11400h and rtx 2050. Also ordered a 1tb ssd for the other slot and another 8gb ram stick so we'll see how that works out

I just upgraded from that laptop to a fully built out computer. The Asus TuF did really well for me even presently. I've had for 2 years now and it still is going hard on games like rocket league.
We need another drop of gaming mats! Great video as always
