Over 17 years ago, the inaugural ship of a fresh category of naval vessel tailored for near-shore operations was launched by the U.S. Navy. These vessels, known as Littoral Combat Ships or LCS, were envisioned to be swift and nimble, equipped to confront contemporary coastal challenges like missile-equipped boats, diminutive submarines, and mines.
Littoral combat ships share similarities with corvettes utilized by other naval forces.
The Freedom class and the Independence class represent the two variations of LCS.
