Our Hognose Snakes had TWINS!!!

2020 ж. 6 Там.
4 644 892 Рет қаралды

2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw two adorable little hognose faces poking out of the same egg! Ahhhh!!
Update: Both of the twins are doing great! They started eating right away (full mouse pinkies- even the smaller twin!) and will be so much fun to watch grow!

I started watching more videos and ended up subscribing. Not sure if I would ever be able to handle a snake, but I am loving watching and learning about them. Thanks

  • Identical twins can have still noticeable differences if they experience a different development in the egg! The bigger one had a chance to grow a little more, so as he grew his pattern kept going a little more and he's got that extra dot! Different genes of yours will "switch on" depending on your environment, which is pretty cool. You can have the same genes but your environment can change how they are expressed. Also they're all so cute

He was so small it was hard to find pinkies for him. He's a sweet old gent. Hopefully someday this grandma will finally have her adorable Western Hognose. Thank you so much for this wonderful video. : )

  • Hey, I think you might have had a second pair of twins in the set. The enormous albino egg had a baby three quarters out the first time (probably too much to suck back in) and the egg was super filled. The next time we see this egg another head is sticking out, and the egg is much less full. So, twin albinos and twin normals! Keep those snakes together and the amount of twins may become more.

  • Regarding the twins’ slightly differing patterns: I’m not an expert and I don’t know if this is the case in snakes, but in some mammals pigment expression can be slightly different even in identical twins. Years ago I had a conversation with a veterinarian about pinto horses in particular and he said that even cloned horses will have slightly different patterns because it’s mostly genetic but also partially random chance in the exact way the signaling molecules disperse through the fetus. So if that’s also true in snakes, it’s entirely possible that they are identical twins just with slightly different pattern expressions!

    • Exactly what I was thinking. I remember reading about a cloning experiment with a calico cat to observe the effects of gene expression. Her clone had a completely different pattern and was very different in personality. I noticed the snakes had an identical head stamp, which tells me they're probably identical twins. The rest of the patterning is probably controlled by gene expression and that's why it's different.

  • Hi Ed and Emily! I heard you guys wondering about the twins not being exactly identical which mean they could be fraternal, but technically all the babies are fraternal. What I think could be going on there is semi-identical twins. What this means is that the babies had the same cell from the mother, but different cells from the father. So essentially the egg was fertilized twice and the mom's cell split. So they would be identical on the Mother's side and Fraternal on the Father's side. It's an exceedingly rare occurrence and there are only seven currently recognised sets of human twins who are semi-identical last I heard. Or I could just be wrong and one just has an extra brown spot due to something in development. Either way, they're all adorable!

    • Just want to add to the genetics conversation that pattern genetics is not strictly Mendelian and have only been shown to have ~.56-.79 heritability in some population of snakes and reptiles. There has also been some evidence of embryonic stage interacting with genetics to influence final pattern/colour. I bring up all this to say that twin snakes can have different patterns to each other due to environmental influences and epigenetics. For a slightly stretched example (in terms of species) when they began cloning dairy cows scientists found that the clone and original would have different black and white patterns because that trait is influenced by environmental factors. TLDR: They can be identical twins and have different patterns because phenotype = genotype + environment

      @sparrowthesparrow@sparrowthesparrow3 жыл бұрын
    • I'm inclined to think they're true identical twins because they have identical head stamps. A cloning experiment in calico cats found that gene expression controls the spotting. There was a pretty stark example of a clone who had almost no orange coming from a cat with a lot of orange in her coat. If the same thing holds true in snakes, that's probably why the twins are very similar but slightly different in spotting.
