After years of delays, the long-awaited Alfa Romeo Tonale has finally arrived to join the luxurious yet crowded subcompact premium SUV segment. With bold styling that exudes Italian flair, the Tonale has the looks to turn heads, but does it have the substance to match its head-turning presence?
Stylish But Not A Standout Design
There's no mistaking the Tonale for anything other than an Alfa Romeo thanks to its trademark triangular grille and sculpted Italian bodywork. The aggressive front end with slim headlights gives it an appropriately sporty appearance, while the rounded back and full-width taillights create a sophisticated rear look. Overall, the Tonale has a handsome if somewhat conventional shape for the class.
The interior is a highlight and feels suitably premium, with a driver-oriented layout, aluminum accents, contrasting stitching, and comfortable if under-bolstered seats. The available 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is excellent, but Alfa's infotainment system, while responsive and loaded with features, looks a bit dated with its small 10.3-inch screen.
Effortless Around Town But Soggy Elsewhere
Powering the Tonale is a plug-in hybrid setup consisting of a 1.3-liter turbo-four gas engine, an electric motor, and a 15.5-kWh battery pack. The electric motor provides lively thrust off the line, helping the Tonale reach 60 mph in a reasonably quick 5.5 seconds. However, the powertrain feels strained and wheezy at higher speeds lacking the punchy performance Alfa is known for.
The 33-mile electric driving range allows for quiet, emissions-free commuting, and when driving strictly on electric power, the Tonale is smooth and effortless around town. But the powertrain's strengths end there. Switch to hybrid mode and the transitions between electric and gas power are far from seamless, with jerky handoffs and regenerative braking that's difficult to modulate smoothly.
Perhaps more disappointing is how disconnected the Tonale feels from the driver. The steering is devoid of any feedback, body motions are poorly controlled through corners, and the adaptive dampers fail to quell excessive body roll and dive. This is simply not a driver's SUV like its Stelvio bigger brother.
