  • Being a union member I can tell you that there was a period where the unions were overreaching in their demands. I can also tell you that is no longer the case. We want to make a living and to be able to support our families. Somehow conservatives have painted union as wanting too much and making the US anti-competitive in the world; that average worker salaries should not be based on a minimum amount, but the lowest amount a manufacturer can get away with paying - while still giving bailouts and low interest loans to corporations and the wealthy that far exceed that of all those workers combined. We need to change people's minds about what unions are and what they actually do for the common worker.

    • I'm not anti union by any stretch of the imagination, but I find your first sentence and fourth sentence to be kind of weirdly out of touch with your points. Unions went too far but conservatives painted them in his light somehow? Sounds like unions did that on their own, or at least gave conservatives the ammunition necessary to make the argument. To be fair to your argument, I am sure conservatives didn't provide a nice nuanced and balanced approach to this and didn't overexaggerate anything at all, surely not, but unions kind of did this to themselves and if they are getting back to more real "for the worker" negotiations then great, but like Tim Ryan pointed out, perception changes slowly. It is going to take time to rebuild that reputation after decades of corruption and focuses on politician lobbying by union leaders and heads.

But Batya is also correct that Democrats have all but abandoned them -- not just over immigration but because they've switched their focus from economics to demographics. They've become obsessed with "minorities" and "diversity" and have almost entirely forgotten courting WORKING CLASS people (their former base), REGARDLESS of color or demographic category.

    • Not correct on that second part, because unlike republicans, the Democratic party has actually proven it can walk and chew gum at the same time to be able to try to help ALL of the demographics you've just listed (minorities. diversity, working class, etc). Just because the republican party wants to make everything an either/or "win" scenario in SUPPOSED favor of their voting base over their opposition doesn't mean it's automatically a "both sides are just as bad" situation that means Democrats do the same thing. But understanding this reality requires the capability to compare what republicans SAY to what they actually DO when proposing/passing legislation.

It is discouraging when those things happen but won’t change until members make their elected representatives more accountable for how they represent. At some point it was bad enough in the shop for people to come together and vote to become union, pretty much the same way they can vote to become non-union. • @@timapple9157 In regards to CEO's growing salaries (etc)... we've been developing our own home-grown oligarchy fro decades. As for unions... union LEADERS absolutely are a part of that oligarchy. They *are* politicians... they work for "a" government, if not "the" government... and they are ELECTED. Union leaders are your "corporate government"... your *second* one. Think about this... Cali just passed a law to raise fast food workers' minimum wage to 20$/hr... but it's "only" 15$/hr for other workers. As a result, hundreds, if not 1000's... are going to get laid off... permanently. The ones who are left, are going to have to work harder as a result. So, if they "care" so much... why didn't they talk Newsome out of this, so that their members could keep their jobs? Aside from that, raising the minimum wage *causes* inflation. No, it's not the only cause, but it's one of them.

It's a fact that companies are in business to make a profit and if they don't, then why be in business. That doesn't mean they can run amuck over workers, but there are plenty of non-unionized companies that pay a good to great wage. • Bill was close on the marriage statistic. STATS: 41% divorce rate in first marriages, 60% of second marriages, and over 70% of third marriages end in divorce. I first learned these stats watching Dr Phil.

  • Fair play to Tim Ryan for standing his ground on unions.

  • Ryan's comment about the 40 year right wing war against unions was spot on. It started as a cottage industry and rapidly grew. Thats why there's a small per cent of organized workers.

  • I have a large client that moved a lot of their operations out of the country. Places like Mexico and China, etc. I asked him if they will ever come back. He said no he said the educated people stayed in Mexico and they’re getting better quality of work there than they are here in the US he says the uneducated and the lowest on the totem pole or coming over. Dr. Phil is not being forthright with his response.
