Ultra running, whatever

Yeah, I run. I’ve always run, but not like this; with a plan, bags of Tailwind, a beeping watch, and the looming deadline of a race that’s happily called the hardest 100k race in Australia. That means proper training, taking it a bit more seriously than some of my antics in the past, and likely means I can’t just eat bananas. That, and I’ve lined up for this bloody race twice and not finished (yes, there’s films on the way about that). This holiday has many themes, and one of them is running. Run you bastard.

  • G’day folks! Secret Screenings are back for 2024. beaumiles.com/screenings/ I’m touring brand new (half baked) films around the east coast of Australia. On the night, I’ll also be telling you a bunch of excellent stories that may or may not have anything to do with what you've just watched. Goodonyas!

Please refrain from the Robinson Cruso style. 😱 One video made me so worried that you had spent ten years on a desert island and were now running for your life to find your way back to civilization. But now I see that everything is fine. 😅

  • I have been running, trail running and having my own crazy adventures for a decade. No one joins me, my family thinks I am daft. Many years ago I found you and your stories and adventures. Another red bearded outdoorsman who loves the trades on the other side of the world who could inspire me and make me feel a bit of kinship. It’s not meaningless Beau. We do what we can for the world around us. The trees you planted, bottles you saved, waterways you have cleaned and the wood you repurposed, all makes the world better. Especially the stories.

Unlike tendons, sinews and cartilage which have no blood vessels so they grow much slower, making them the weakest links. That loud whipping sound of a snapping achilles sinew is horrifying. Glad it wasn't me. Take care and enjoy!

Though my life is very different than yours I try to live in a similar way, there is a lot of pain in this world both internal and external but there is also a lot of pleasure to be found if you go looking for it. Life truly is a blessing. Another cracking video.

  • Great work Beau. As a now 46 year old father of two, the comment about contributing nothing while out there resonates with me, but I also know myself well enough now to know I'm a miserable bastard if I'm stuck in the house. Getting out is never a bad idea, and as you say, even a mediocre run, ride or walk elevates the mood and makes me a better man, dad, husband, manager, employee and all the other roles we play...

  • "I contribute nothing"... That's bullshit Beau. When you run, you're taking care of yourself both physically and mentally(mentally is probably more important). I would bet that you are 10x more attentive to your kids just because of that. I climb and do the same thing. Sneak away for a weekend or a week, but the recharge that I get just lets me give so much more to my kids and my wife. Taking care of yourself is important. If you don't do that, then how can you take care of anyone else?

  • From one runner to another, thank you for the insight, infectious enthusiasm, and wonderful mindset. Almost ten years ago I ran my first race, a half marathon. I inadvertently chose one of the hilliest races in the state, but still had a lovely time. I trained a little more seriously the next year, and set a half marathon PR of just under two hours, which was lovely. I had to take four years off of running due to some injuries, and it was a terrible time, but by 2022 I was finally healed back up enough to run again, and life is just magical. I ran my first full marathon then, hiked the entire coast of Oregon in 2023, and this year am working on speed. I've run my fastest 5k and 10k races since 2016, and am on track to challenge my half marathon PR in a few weeks. Your videos have definitely helped me as I clawed my way back to being a runner again. Thank you.

  • This is so well timed. I'm doing a very hilly 112+mile bike ride at the weekend, the training is complete, I'm watching this while taking a break from finishing the pre event bike checks and that little monologue at the end was just what I needed to hear.

  • Awesome film mate. Totally sums up why I love trail running. Have ran, hiked and skied the trails you ran many times. Such a magical place

  • Love watching Beau run to all our favourite places in the high country! So good. One trip we did the Falls to Hotham crossing with our kids. Husband (absolute legend) ran back to Falls to get the car the next day while we relaxed at the Moritz.

  • you are so enjoyable to watch, i can not wait until this channel explodes because it will, you are to good of a film maker. One thing to bring up, is i know alot of youtubers have been pulling the family out of videos for safety, speak to demo ranch about it, he explains it well. You have such a amazing wife and family just want you all to be wonderfully happy and safe. just something to keep in mind. good luck at the race i hope you finish!!

  • Man I miss running. I was born with a club foot but had corrective surgery before the age of 1. As a teen I would run during sports, parkour, and forest runs along creeks and rivers. In my 20s my ankle just disintegrated to the point that I couldn't even stand without excruciating pain. It's just bones grinding together in there. It took 15 years before I finally got a pediatrist who would treat me and I can now stand and walk with little pain but running still feels like having my bones broken over and over. I really miss being able to just run through the woods, hell I can't even run with my kids. I know that's how it goes as we get older not being able to do the basic human activity of running is tough. Maybe someday I'll get a better treatment and will be able to hit the trails again but for now I'll just live vicariously through Beau.
