I'm super interested in the mechanics and functions of tutorial bosses in FromSoft games, so I decided to make a video about two of them--Iudex Gundyr from Dark Souls 3 and Margit, the Fell Omen from Elden Ring--who I think represent the genius behind FromSoft's designs.
Intro: 00:00
Iudex Gundyr: 00:50
Margit's Mechanical Brilliance: 03:40
Final Thoughts--Play However you Want! 08:19

    • @@jermergerg It actually is my first of the genre. I need to work on my basic skills - avoid spam rolling, get my parry timing right and such. I managed to get throught the first couple of hours so I'm somewhere between the absolute zero and being able to kill Margit. I just roam the lands and kill whatever I can. Bosses are out of the question for now..

    • @@m.balauszko Yeah that's the right move. You'll get there for sure. I'm actually working on a combat guide for my series of ER guides, so hopefully that'll be out at some point within the next week. Biggest advice is to watch hand animations and try to train yourself to not react prematurely. Also, as I'm sure you know, embrace death lol. Dying a lot is par for the course, and you get better each time :)

    @oncerain@oncerain29 күн бұрын
    • Yeah fair enough, that wasn't the right word. I didn't mean to imply you can't win the game without parrying, although that's certainly what "indispensable" wound up conveying! I just meant that it can make a lot of difficult encounters much easier for people who are having trouble with them, but you're right, it was incorrectly phrased on my part.

  • Well made video and well put together thoughts but I'm going to diagree with you when it comes to the Margit and Elden Ring bosses as a whole. I agree with what you said about Gundyr but with both bosses you have spoken a decent ammount about parrying whilst also saying it's a good place for newer players to learn this mechanic, I can assure you new players are not parrying their first boss of their first souls game. Speaking on Margit, I suppose it is a good tutorial boss as it gets you ready for the absolute bullshit that is coming up with every Elden Ring boss because Miyazaki has completely run out of ideas so instead of making hard but fair bosses, he has decided to add in to every boss a million delayed attacks and roll catches. Most people who kill Margit will not come to the revelations you have had about him on their first kill, and since we are talking about a "tutorial boss" only first experiences matter so you or I talking about the boss after killing it multiple times isn't really an accurate reflection of what the newbie has really experienced. Margit is full of bullshit, insane unnaturally delayed attacks, "unreadable" 4(?) hit flurry where I still don't know which way to dodge without getting hit at least once, input reading knife throw, cane uppercut which is fairly fast but you get used to it, and the hammer jump where he lingers about 2 seconds in midair which we could also class as a delayed attack. All of this is unfair, cynical design which is not good for new players ESPECIALLY if they try to fight Margit at the very start the way the game tells you to, but then this comes to the problem of From going to an open world design instead of a more curated better paced experience like Dark Souls 1. You say don't let people discourage people for using spirit summons and I agree with what you said about it being a game and have fun how you like, but spirit summons just breaks the bosses and makes them easier as the bosses clearly aren't designed with summons in mind. You also said, and I'm paraphrasing here "he reacts almost perfectly with his knife and it feels like there is malice to it" he does, and there is. Elden Ring boss design is hot garbage designed to frustrate the life out of seasoned vets of the series because the general playerbase has become too skilled at the combat system over the years. Just look at Twin Gargoyles fight in ER compared to Dark Souls 1, sure DaS1 is much easier but it feels fair whereas in ER I just feel like the dev is either incompetent or laughing at my misfortune. Sorry to rant just wanted to offer a counter opinion but respect the way you put your opinion across.

    @Olliecksdee@Olliecksdee20 күн бұрын
    • I appreciate your kind words, and respectful disagreement like you've done here is always welcome on my channel :) I can *totally* understand why the delays frustrate people. Personally, they don't really bother me. I think they signal a reorientation toward an emphasis on learning the move sets of each individual boss at a very deep level. If that's not super appealing, then I think Elden Ring probably isn't going to be very enjoyable, but for me, I kind of like that approach, so the delays don't bug me that much.

    • @@jermergerg I think a lot of what I posted was my opinions from my first playthrough of the game from a while ago, I have since started a new playthrough and I am having a lot more fun as I supposed I know what to expect and where to exploit bosses movesets better. But there seemed to be a lot of people who felt the same way I did about the bosses when the game first came out especially if you used slow weapons it just seemed impossible to even get an opening. I resorted to Mimic Tear to kill Melania the first time as I was so done with it at the time. But definitely having more fun now, hopefully the DLC is a banger althought it's VERY expensive for what I expect the ammount of content actually will be.

      @Olliecksdee@Olliecksdee20 күн бұрын
    • @@Olliecksdee I'm a *total* dexterity guy in all souls-like games; I can never imagine how people use heavy weapons in these games--they're so slow! But yeah in Elden Ring especially, boss fights with heavy weapons are just not my thing.
