They really do bring out the best in each other. The quality of this match was insane! Serena's first set was near flawless! Vika was able to handle Serena's power and her improved movement was the best I've seen from her in her career. Wish it was best 3/5 sets!

Incredible effort from Azarenka after being crushed in the first set by Serena. She showed incredible fight in this match and finally, finally won a match against Serena on the grand slam stage. Although she didn’t win the US Open, she is playing so well and is looking like a player ready to beat everyone in 2020 and beyond. Incredible win for her here.

Felt for Azarenka in this tournament. Finally she managed to overcome Serena who was always Azarenka's biggest obstacle in slam tournaments, only to then find a next gen player now blocking her path to victory in the final.

Listen, I am a huge Serena fan, whether she does break the slam record or not she is one of if not the greatest in history.. that being said, everyone is afraid to admit that she is not the same player she was in past years. She’s almost 40 years old and has other priorities in her life. I truly think, if she wants 24 she must get a little bit fitter. There’s no denying the absolute full out panting between points. Oh I agree with you Mike. Clearly Serena is not the same caliber of player she was years ago because as you stated she is knocking on the big 40 and getting older. This happens to every athlete as they age...no matter how skilled and talented they are. Concerning Serena's heavy breathing,she had a part of her lung cut away years ago after her first,life threatening bout with blood clots-Does not have full capacity in her lungs. Her dealing with It,makes her tennis achievements even more amazing. The breathing reminds me of when Serena first came back to tennis in 2011. She got it under control for the most part the next year. Won Wimbledon,Olympics. It maybe affecting her more now due to the time away due to covid-19 and not keeping up her physical workout level or age combined with changes in her body after giving birth. Serena's probably about the same weight more or less when she dominated the sport-her physical stamina seems to be the issue though. When she has gotten into 2nd and third sets she has often not been as hard charging to victory as she has been before.

She has a lot of inflammation. I think it may be due to her diet. Once I cut out sugar, I breathed much easier and clearer on the court. Djokovic the same. If she hasn't already, perhaps she should see a dietician?

All these medical issues that she is experiencing might be the reason she never wins again.. am very surprised she has not figured out exactly what is it she needs to do. I never understand why people hate on vika and Maria for grunting but don’t say a thing about serena. Personally I wouldn’t hate on any one for grunting bc they’re giving it their all and that’s what happens. But at least maria abs vika are consistent. Serena half the time doesn’t do it and the other half grunts louder than either of them, and some shots will have a very distributive long almost scream like grunt. I would find it much more distracting than a consistent loud grunt from vika and maria

Serena has gotten worse for it over the years, but Kuznetsova, Niculescu and Halep are other offenders who come to mind.

Serena has made the semis or better in New York for 10 straight appearances. Amazing. Sadly she's only won it 4 of those 10 times LOL. I agree with some other comments - she's working harder than she has to. She's pressing too much. She's grinding against herself instead of making her opponents do most of the work. I think fitness wise she's fine. She has to play smarter and she'll get there. Fact of the matter is she's putting herself in these positions to keep winning majors. She just has to focus on that moment and cash in.

Azarenka is fit. Calmer and fast. Serena is not fit enough, get tired too fast and become desperate and anxious when things don't go her way instead of thinking. Too difficult to win the 24, this was her best chance.

There are fitter players on the tour nowadays who could hit better than Serena. Most of the time Serena manages to win with power. Her chances of winning one more slam will be better when she improves on her fitness.

Listen, I am a huge Serena fan, whether she does break the slam record or not she is one of if not the greatest in history.. that being said, everyone is afraid to admit that she is not the same player she was in past years. She’s almost 40 years old and has other priorities in her life. I truly think, if she wants 24 she must get a little bit fitter. There’s no denying the absolute full out panting between points. Serena can do it, it will just take work! LOVE YOU SERENA! LETS GET THIS!
Oh I agree with you Mike. Clearly Serena is not the same caliber of player she was years ago because as you stated she is knocking on the big 40 and getting older. This happens to every athlete as they age...no matter how skilled and talented they are. People who refuse to accept this reality are the very same ones who choose to live in a delusional world where Serena is still in her twenties and not well past her prime.
Serena had already played back to back three sets...she's no machine. Vika was so much fresher and also played great. This was some high quality clean hitting tennis.

Her dealing with It,makes her tennis achievements even more amazing. The breathing reminds me of when Serena first came back to tennis in 2011. She got it under control for the most part the next year. Won Wimbledon,Olympics. It maybe affecting her more now due to the time away due to covid-19 and not keeping up her physical workout level or age combined with changes in her body after giving birth. Serena's probably about the same weight more or less when she dominated the sport-her physical stamina seems to be the issue though. When she has gotten into 2nd and third sets she has often not been as hard charging to victory as she has been before.
She has a lot of inflammation. I think it may be due to her diet. Once I cut out sugar, I breathed much easier and clearer on the court. Djokovic the same. If she hasn't already, perhaps she should see a dietician?
All these medical issues that she is experiencing might be the reason she never wins again.. am very surprised she has not figured out exactly what is it she needs to do. She should have qualified people on her team to inform her best.. the way I see it she will have to start playing smarter tennis where she is running less..

If I eat a pie or ice-cream, my body starts freaking out. Djokovic cut out breads, sugar, carbs, most dairy, anything fun, and he's winning almost everything.
She suffered from pulmonary embolism and lung resection is not a treatment for the same.

I know it's hypocritical to call out grunting when Azarenka is playing but Serena was bordering on hindrance in that third set.
I never understand why people hate on vika and Maria for grunting but don’t say a thing about serena. Personally I wouldn’t hate on any one for grunting bc they’re giving it their all and that’s what happens. But at least maria abs vika are consistent. Serena half the time doesn’t do it and the other half grunts louder than either of them, and some shots will have a very distributive long almost scream like grunt. I would find it much more distracting than a consistent loud grunt from vika and maria

Serena has gotten worse for it over the years, but Kuznetsova, Niculescu and Halep are other offenders who come to mind.

Serena has made the semis or better in New York for 10 straight appearances. Amazing. Sadly she's only won it 4 of those 10 times LOL. I agree with some other comments - she's working harder than she has to. She's pressing too much. She's grinding against herself instead of making her opponents do most of the work. I think fitness wise she's fine. She has to play smarter and she'll get there. Fact of the matter is she's putting herself in these positions to keep winning majors. She just has to focus on that moment and cash in.
Imagine if Ash, Simona, Bianca, Kiki, Belinda and Elina competed in that Open, I'm pretty sure the draws will be different and some player will not go as far as the Semis.

Azarenka is fit. Calmer and fast. Serena is not fit enough, get tired too fast and become desperate and anxious when things don't go her way instead of thinking. Too difficult to win the 24, this was her best chance.
Id definitely say azarenka and many other players r fitter than Serena, but her fitness isnt bad. Yes shes breathing hard but she manages to play great throughout all 3 sets she plays. As for the getting too desperate and anxious, i definitely agree, when she’s not in control she gets too frustrated and her level drops
