Please join me in this video, The World Was His Lobster - George Cole - An Actor's Life.
George Cole was a prolific film actor and an established television legend - so deeply ensconced in the character he brought to life that even I think of George Cole as Arthur Daley before I correct myself and remember what a truly magnificent actor George Cole was, long before Arthur Daley in Minder made an appearance on our television screens!
It is incredible how different George Cole was from the character he inhabited for fifteen years and beyond, as everyone that watched Minder and even those that didn’t know Arthur Daley the dodgy businessman, used car salesman - self-proclaimed entrepreneur - dishonest, shifty, and cowardly! George Cole had none of those traits - he was loved by everyone who worked with him and enjoyed nothing more than being with his family and friends, and doing the Times crossword!
George Cole began his acting career at the age of fourteen under the supervision and guidance of one of the country’s most applauded actors - who took him into his home at the age of fourteen - their friendship was sealed and George Cole would eventually buy the house next door to his mentor and live there for seventy years!
George Cole was cremated at Reading Crematorium in Berkshire, but his final resting place is unknown - please join me as I bring flowers and find a peaceful place to lay them as we remember the brilliant, fascinating life of an iconic actor who gave us so much pleasure on film, television, stage, and radio over the years.

I do my best to respond to all comments but it can take a bit of time - so thank you in advance for your patience! If you are interested in reading more about the amazing George Cole I can thoroughly recommend his autobiography:

  • As an American growing up in the 1960s, I only knew of George Cole from two black and white films, Scrooge and Morning Departure but from just those two movies I could tell he was an excellent actor. I had no idea he had such a prolific career in Britain and I'm glad he did. Cole had a genuine charisma about him that came across on screen making him instantly likable. You really do this remarkable man justice in your video.

  • Awwww George Edward Cole I absolutely love him. "Our Arfur" He brought so much happiness and joy to my life. And yes I heard Alistair Simms took George in. St Trinians has Flash Harry a Cockney Spiv hahaha wonderful. And then 'Minder' It was amazing and magical. It is so lovely that George and Dennis remained good friends throughout. I miss them immensely. Thankfully these incredible legends have left so many memories with lots of irreplaceable footage. Dennis Waterman said he and George had the time of their lives in Minder ❤😊❤😊

    • @@BeautifulBadandBizarre That's true. Unlike his character Arthur Daley in 'Minder', George himself was always a very moral man in real life. He was not just highly respected for his greatl acting abilities, but was also loved and adored by both his fellow actors and the public alike. Unfortunately, they don't make them like him anymore.

  • Well done for this storey of Georges life. I had the pleasure of working on Minder for the first 52 episodes, George and Dennis were absolutely wonderful and totally professional, they knew what all the crew did and why, and were helpful where they could be. I think it did become the Arthur Daley show eventually, as when we started, the first episode shot was "Bounty Hunter" and it wasn't seen as a comedy, although of course it developed into one, probably due to Georges delivery of the fabulous Leon Griffith's scripts, plus George and Dennis's ad-libs. Crew rumour had it that Lee Montague was considered for the part of Arthur, if he had done it the show would of course been very different. Four very happy years of my career.

  • His death signals a passing of a man who despite being a superb actor in his own right, was one of the last surviving links to the world of Alec Guinness, Bernard Miles, John Mills , Kathleen Harrison et al, and in particular his mentor and lifelong freind Alaister Sim. Bot performances in 1951 A Christmas Carol and also Laughter in Paradise as well as the schoolboy spy film are classics that resonate down the decades. Brilliant and a gentleman of his time too. Lovely stuff.

  • 90 is a pretty good innings by any standard and what a life. Marvellous actor in every respect. No one can deny his greatness in the role of Arthur Daley but for me, personally, there are two roles that I much preferred him playing. I'm a big fan of the St. Trinian's films and he is Flash Harry to be sure. The other role is as the father of Madeline Smith's character in the 1970 Hammer Horror film The Vampire Lovers. I was actually aware of his history with the legendary Alastair Sim and I really must get around to reading his autobiography. So good of him to keep the most private part of his life private. So many "celebrities" could do with learning from that. There was nothing flash about George. A truly great actor and a decent bloke. He and Dennis are both missed. Thank you for another wonderful tribute video. Well researched and tastefully presented, as always.

    • Yes! I'm so glad he had a long and happy life I agree also that Flash Harry was brilliant and wasn't Ingrid Pitt in Vampire Lovers? She was amazing - sadly she she died young didn't she? I would so definitely recommend George's autobiography - it's worth reading! I agree regarding keeping his private life private - I think it must have been terribly painful for him - I very much respect his decision not to talk about it publicly but I did smile at your comment about 'celebrities' today it's so true!!! Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the video

    • @@BeautifulBadandBizarreIndeed she was, and in so many other great horror films. Ingrid Pitt was a fabulous actress. She had that total presence thing going on. When she was on screen you couldn't take your eyes off her. Funny thing, but just last night I watched The Wicker Man (the original and best version) featuring her remarkable presence. She was made to play the role of Carmilla - the original vampire - long before Count Dracula. 😁 I just had to check. Ingrid Pitt died in 2010 at the age of 73. Her life story is pretty remarkable too.

    • Thank you so much - I thought she was younger than that! She was such a beauty as well as being incredibly talented. I haven’t seen The Wicker Man! I do actually find the 60s and 70s horror films more watchable than todays offerings - although having said that - I pretty much feel that way about all film genres/entertainment! I can’t remember the last time I watched a ‘modern’ film - I think it might have been Legend 🤭

  • I found "The Firebug" episode of Gideon's Way. Oh his character is quite disturbing! but I felt empathy for him too. Fantastic acting from George Cole. I'm so glad you mentioned it. I had never watched Gideon's Way before. So I'm going through the other episodes. What a great programme. Thank you Shar for such a wonderful presentation and tribute to such a great actor and person. I remember George Cole as Flash Harry in St. Trinians and A Christmas Carol (scrooge) and other movies. I actually didn't watch Minder that much when it first aired, I may have watched one or two episodes but I was a young teenager back then and probably wasn't into it. I know my parents watched it though. I have found episodes on YT and am going to watch some out of respect for George Cole. I feel I will probably appreciate it a lot more now as an adult.
