About Malaysia Airlines (from Wikipedia):
Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB; Malay: Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad), formerly known as Malaysian Airline System (MAS; Sistem Penerbangan Malaysia), and branded as Malaysia Airlines, is the flag carrier of Malaysia and a member of the Oneworld airline alliance. (The MAS initials are still being kept by subsidiaries MASkargo and MASwings.) The company headquarters are at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. In August 2014, the Malaysian government's sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional-which then owned 69.37% of the airline-announced its intention to purchase the remaining ownership from minority shareholders and delist the airline from Malaysia's stock exchange, thereby renationalising the airline. It operates primarily from its main hub Kuala Lumpur International Airport to destinations throughout Asia, Oceania and Europe, as well as its secondary hub Kota Kinabalu International Airport to Taipei and Tokyo (Narita).
About Airbus A330-300 (from Wikipedia):
Powered by two General Electric CF6-80E1, Pratt & Whitney PW4000, or Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, the 63.69 m (208 ft 11 in) long Airbus A330−300 has a range of 11,750 km (6,340 nmi; 7,300 mi), typically carries 277 passengers with a 440 exit limit and 32 LD3 containers.[96] It received European and American certification on 21 October 1993 after 420 test flights over 1,100 hours.[133] The −300 entered service on 16 January 1994.[37] The A330-300 is based on a stretched A300 fuselage but with new wings, stabilizers and fly-by-wire systems

  • As a Singaporean, I think MH hasn’t been getting the credit it deserves, perhaps due to the series of events it has suffered back in 2014. While SQ crew is always impeccable and obliging, but they can be super robotic and forced. MH crew on the other hand, are always more easy going and dare I say, genuine. That said, I wish they open more routes so that I don’t have to limit my options to just Emirates, Qatar, Finnair and Lufthansa every time I make a trip to Europe.

  • While they say MH cannot beat SQ or Emirates, etc because they went down after 2 tragic incidents. This is what I felt after flying back with them last March -- despite two tragic incidents that caught the scrutiny of the world and COVID, and yet they still are standing tall, flying and the crew still exudes the legendary Malaysian Hospitality the moment you step into the plane -- in my books they are my award winning Malaysian airline.

    • That is the typical denial and confusion: It is not due to the 2 disasters of years back, it is due to a lack of professionalism, ambition and a clear strategy to be the preferred airline in SE Asia. Malaysia Boleh, too laid back and not willing to become better.

    • Oh no its not. It is a shambles that deteriorates progressively. I have taken pity on them because of past (very public) issues and flown on them many times in the past years. The aeroplanes are filthy inside, the old cabin male staff are awful and the computer ticketing system is truly awful. The flight I have booked on next week was cancelled without notice and I had to rebook through an agent. The flight has only managed to depart within 20 minutes of schedule once in 14 days. On 6 days it has been up to three hours late. Previous flights have delayed me five hours or more. This is the 'last chance' flight for Malaysian Airlines as far as I am concerned and I am already mentally prepared for the delays and broken connection flights. If any of your colleagues wishes to reassure me I would be happy to hear from them.

  • About 20 or so years ago malaysia airlines was said in the same breath as Singapore airlines. It’s gone through some tough times , and is rife with politics internally ; but the in flight crew have always been outstanding imo. One of the most graceful crew and I always feel like I’m at home the moment I board a MH flight

    @Thongger@Thongger23 күн бұрын
    • Was in the same breath? MAS was literally the pioneer of hospitality and world class air service in Southeast Asia. SIA actually learned what they got now from MAS. MAS was slowly declining but the 2014 and 15 event almost killed the carrier. Had it is a private career, I don't think it would last this long. Good thing is, MAS has slowly recovered and finally gain profits after years of losing money and reliance on the government bailing out.

  • I flew on their 737-800NG from HKG to KUL and back in March in economy and even that experience was very nice! Food was yummy and flavoursome, service was Asian efficiency mixed with warm Asian hospitality. A lot better than European experiences sad to say, they really need to catchup, but sadly people have a habit of just “putting up” and accepting sub par soft product experiences. In economy the hard product is almost indistinguishable so it’s the soft product that sets Asian airlines apart from Western ones.

      @sharraleigh@sharraleigh24 күн бұрын
    • @@sharraleigh I can confirm that. Last year we flew Air Canada from LHR to YVR, which was fine but staff friendly but that was about it, but then YVR to YYZ we were delayed for 3 hours on the tarmac because they had to draft in a standby Captain last minute because our original one was severely delayed on another flight. Then finally our flight from YYZ to LHR was also delayed by 2 hours. Both delayed flights as you can imagine the cabin crew were fed up and not as nice as the first and food is nothing to shout about.

  • Used to fly regularly with MAS in economy and business between lomdon and KL. MAS were world class in the 2000s and my preferred airline, hands down. As soon as you stepped on board in London, you were already in Malaysia. The two unfortunate tragedies and economic downturn in Malaysia, the boom of other high quality and affordable airlines operating via the middle east and Turkey, then COVID challenged MAS. I'm still waiting for them to bounce back and bring back flights to Europe other than London as i no longer live there. What happened to them is unfortunate but i and many others still have faith in the national carrier of Malaysia and can't wait to step foot in their cabin again once its convenient. I have so many memories and stories from my many flights back and forth and its thanks to the MAS cabin crew and one pilot that a scared, sky fearing teenager is now someone who loves flight and is comfortable on board any plane. I hope they return to their former glory and reputation, they were and still are an incredibly safe and well maintained airline outside of the two incidents and dont deserve the fear some people still have of flying with them.

  • Context: I have been flying with this airline for almost 30 years. The overall MH product at present seems to have had some improvement in the last year or so compared to during and just after the pandemic when it was quite honestly just appaling. How low does a business need to go when it illegally and immorally keeps funds/credit from customers by cancelling flights and just refusing to process refunds. Mind you, they were not the only airline doing this. The single biggest issue with the airline is the lack of strong and honest leadership/management. The management has been changed too many times, each time failing to make any significant improvement and change. That is why slowly but surely, its overall standards today just does not seem to be quite the same as that of yesteryear. Any business that hopes to succeed must have high levels of discipline, reliability, integrity and accountability. Yet, Malaysia Airlines for many years just seems to have a business model that cannot produce those qualities consistently. Ultimately, the airline needs to decide what is more important to them. Is it to produce a top quality product to rival that of SIA, Qatar? Or is it to nonchalantly accept being mediocre/average? If it's the latter, then I suppose they're doing alright. But if they are aiming for the former, then quite sadly , I feel that they have a long way to go.

  • Dan, I really enjoy your airline reviews. Your don't pull any punches when it comes to the negatives, but you point out the shortcomings in a classy and constructive way. The background music you play is soothing and uplifting, and your production quality is excellent. The seat map graphics are awesome. Thanks for a great channel, and for helping fliers save money.

BUT he doesn't read the comments here (which is where I found out about this & immediately signed up upon my next entry) 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Agree with all your assessments... cabin crews are wonderful, seats and storage/amenities are great and if you are going for the regular menu, food is fantastic. And yeah the IFE is meh. As a Malaysian, I always look forward to stepping on board MH when it's time to go home especially. It feels like I've come home before I actually do.

If you have any insights or advice on this matter, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider my query. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

  • Hi. Fyi Malaysia Airlines (previously known as M.A.S, which was a split from M.S.A) used to be top ranked among the world which was often looked up by others and newcomers like Etihad, Emirates and Qatar but improvised further. Including SIA. Unfortunately when MAS realised this, it was too late and had to play catch up game when others were already far ahead.

  • I took this same flight in January, was definitely good enough. QR had absolutely zero pax on the flight (as you probably know QR controls most of the seats on this flight and MH only gets 4 or so seats they can assign on their tickets, I was on an MH ticket), so there were exactly 2 passengers in business class, myself and the sports minister of Malaysia. Was a VERY peaceful flight. I can also say the crew was excellent on that flight, but with only 2 passengers to take care of, it's hard to go wrong.

  • Malaysia Airlines are seriously trying their best. The first step is of course to make enough money. 2014 was such an unfortunate year for the airline and it took a decade to finally make decent profit. Finally with enough money, they’re able to improve their cabin products coming later this year as well as new planes. Definitely a good step in the right direction! The CEO’s aim is to get them in the top 10 best airline and launch more routes to Europe. I’m flying them to Doha in June on their SAS hybrid cabin on their A350 which I’m excited about! 🎉

  • Lovely review of MH you got here, Dan! The airline has actually upgraded this flight from an A330 to an A350 recently. In fact, this flight is currently operated by the sole ex-SAS A350 they have in their fleet. MH's Doha route now runs with A350s twice daily. Regarding the business class lavatories, the 2nd lav at door 2 is actually solely for business passengers, despite there being two rows of economy seats between door 2 and the business cabin. The right side lavatory at door 2 is locked by crew members and only unlocked when business class passengers use it. If the lav at the front is occupied, crew will guide the business class passenger to the lav at door 2 and unlock it. After each use, they clean it and lock it again. Those two rows of economy passengers would have to use the lav on the left or the ones down in the main economy cabin. Good to see that the improvements to service and product offerings MH had been making is bearing fruit. These tired A330ceos will soon be replaced by A330neos, which will be featuring Collins Aerospace's Elevation business class product. First of those are due to arrive in September. Their A350s will also be refitted in 2026 with an identical or similar product. So this inconsistent Thompson Vantage configuration will soon be no more.

Anyway Malaysia Airlines, uummm...I wonder what their A350 business class looks like, this A330 is not too bad, its decent, for a tall person like myself, I do not think I would be as comfortable in that lie flat bed, I much prefer Emirates Business lie flat bed any day.
