Listen we all love Dead Space and you know I love a good remake. So this is a match made in heave, right? Well it certainly could be. Today I want to compare the original Dead Space to its Remake and find out what (if anything) has been changed and exactly how faithful those changes are. You should probably expect me to at least barouche the subject of this game falsely being labeled as survival horror as well. Because I'm me and you know I can't help myself.

    • I understand where people are coming from with liking Issac to be mute and I’d be inclined to agree if: 1. They didn’t show his face in the OG game twice and make him have an attempted personality by having him have mission based text entries and his animation of grief upon finding out Nicole was dead. 2. If Gunner Wright didn’t give such an amazing performance and give Issac Clarke such life. Gunner Wright IS Issac Clarke. He has delivered nothing but certified hood classic performances in each title he VA’ed in. Even DS3, he did a great job. Not to mention his writing in DSR and DS2 is fantastic. Motive made the transition between DS1 and 2 seemless now for Issac’s character. Also, nobody can deliver an angry stomp like Gunner Wright. He just knows how to make it sound like bliss when he’s screaming “MOTHER… FUCKER!!!! DIEEE!!!”.

    • Strongly agree. It adds to the character for me personally. He's earnest and knowledgeable but has his moments of confusion, stress, and doubt in relation to a present situation. I don't really get how the player character having a personality would take away from an isolated feeling. Especially if voice work and script are executed to add to it.

    • It's like freeman in half life, the creators wanted additional immersion with the player, it's like a trade off, with part 2 they decided to give him a voice and character to trade off a bit of immersion to give it more story structure.

  • You can also break the loot system in this and RE4 by only having a certain gun on you. In Dead Space, this takes the form of not buying other weapons, or putting them in the storage. The game typically gives you ammo in greater quantities than stasis and health, but since you only have one gun (i.e the Plasma Cutter) on you, it's forced to flush ammo for that down your throat.

  • I think one of the biggest changes to the story is that it ties in better to the lore revealed from Dead Space 2 and 3. It also helps to resolve the confusion people had with why the marker in Dead Space 1 seemed genuinely helpful while the markers in 2 and 3 were obviously not. Dead Space 2 revealed that the marker needs a significant amount of biomass and its creator to start convergence. The red marker in DS1 probably did not have enough biomass or its creator was not present on Aegis 7 during the first outbreak when the government was testing it. Therefore, it helped the scientists escape most likely in the hope that more people would return. The government however, actually did the sensible thing at the time and sealed off the area leaving it to languish for centuries until the Ishamura arrived. By that point, the creator was definitely dead meaning that the marker can't start convergence. Comments made by Dr. Kyne and the marker as Nicole also point to it having lost control of the hivemind by being moved to the Ishamura. So the marker lured people into trying to get it back to the pedestal where it could then imprint the marker blueprints onto the ones helping it (Isaac in this case) and shut down the hivemind so that they could then leave Aegis 7 and create new markers and properly kick off convergence. We get some nice confirmation of this when Nicole communicates with the marker and it says an architect will come when it realizes it can't get the maker. In an ironic twist, Kendra may have actually been doing the right thing in trying to take the marker away rather than letting Isaac take it back to Aegis 7. I also actually really liked Isaac having a voice this time around. Despite being the engineer, it was Hammond and Kendra who told him what to do and how to fix the ship in the original. In the remake, he is the one that is making suggestions and actually being the expert in the room when it comes to how to keep the ship afloat. I also liked Kendra being a nicer person. Made her much more likeable and the betrayal much worse than it was in the original where it really wasn't a shock that she did that. I think my favorite part of the remake though was the much greater degree of freedom and exploration. Solving the side quests and making decisions on when to return to areas to unlock doors/chests as I got higher security clearance knowing that there was a risk of being ambushed by necromorphs felt great. Some of my most intense fights happened doing that. Edit: I won't deny, I was kind of hoping I could save Hammond and maybe some other people even though I knew it wasn't going to happen.

    • One of the main dead space writers revealed recently why the "marker" was helpful in the first game. Cause he viewed the ghosts to be not the marker but actual ghosts helping Isaac. A positive force in the universe, that's why two creates a contradiction cause chuck beaver wanted the ghosts to be real and the other writer was like "no its all the marker it's all evil!".

    • @@toddclawson3619 It's true that they didn't fully map out what exactly the marker was for, the views of the unitologists and the ultimate end goal of the necromorphs until DS2. But the contradiction was in Dead Space 2 as because Chuck Beaver said that while making 2 he and Ben could never fully come to a agreement on the ghosts. and said it creates a contradiction all through out DS2 because they weren't able to come to a agreement on what it was and so DS2 is all "it's the marker, no they're actual ghosts, no they're the marker!, they're ghosts!". lol.

    • Isaac's head the moment he started being voiced (in DS2) was already based on Gunner Wright's. What was different back then is that they still borrowed some characteristics from the original character's face in DS1, which were the blue eyes and dark hair with greying. Also the facial geometry wasn't as accurate to Gunner's as it is in the remake. What blows with Isaac's case in the remake is that they completely threw his most recognizable facial traits out the window and instead we get 100% of Gunner Wright in there - brown eyes, reddish brown hair and for whatever reason no greying at all. I hear some people argue that it was a decision done purposely because Isaac is Gunner and vice versa, so it's better this way to do a clean slate if remaking the rest of the trilogy is on the table. To that I say... why? There clearly were a ton of key components that Motive decided to honor and keep as hands-off as possible while recreating DS, how was the face of the main character himself not one of those? They say they aged both characters yet Isaac looks quite a bit younger both from the new Nicole and his "older selves".

  • A few things to note...I think that Isaac having a voice now works for two reasons, they use the same voice actor as DS 2 & 3 (Gunner Wright) & the actor does such a fantastic job. He sells the character so well. I personally like some of the changes but other changes I DON'T like. For example, in the original, areas had varied lighting. Some areas (rooms) were well lit, others were dimly lit, and others were pitch dark. It was varied. But in the Remake, they are almost always pitch dark. This annoys the hell out of me. There is next to no variation to the lighting. Its always too dark. I get having dark areas but DON'T make them all dark. Also, they changed the sounds made by the necromorphs and they just DON'T sound as scary. They sound pathetic, imho. And there are some other changes that I don't like, but ultimately I think its a great Remake. I hope they Remake 2 & 3 and soon.

    • I agree the remake is great but im still more for the OG . My biggest problem with the remake are that the animations are pretty lame . The OG had great animations that made the necromorphs so outworldly and really creepy to look at and even the creepy scenes hit much better than the remake did. Even Isaac clarke had much more appropiate movements for situations that reflects his panic and sheer fear what could happen to him . The weapon-/Tool- sounds are the biggest down-grade in the remake . In the OG they were punchy with slight sci-fi elements that made them so cool amd dangerous to use . Another problem i have is hammonds death. Its very unfitting with such emotional touch about the underwritten character named chen that it drags the story even a bit . But overall its a great remake that brought some fresh ideas and improvements in the gameplay and can stand with the greats of the series . But i wouldnt say it is a replacememt for the OG because the OG is designwise a differently visioned game that had these design-choices with reasons behind it. . And most importantly it was back then planned to be on the Original Xbox which makes this game even more special all around.

    • It actually make a lot more sense for the entire ship to be dark. The ship was stranded for 6 MONTHS ever since the outbreak within the ship. So many people died in the process amids the chaos and destruction. It's pretty stupid how a good portion of the ship still well lit in the original that completely contradicted the narrative that covered in the comic, animated movie as well as the prequel game.

A dev said they aged them more or less alongside the players who were fans of the original. We're all a good 15 years older than we were back in 2008. I don't think this was necessarily NEEDED, but I get what they were going for. I like how realistic Nicole looks, now. • I’m in the camp that Isaac not talking was the worst part of Dead Space. It was really awkward and off putting when people would die and he wouldn’t say anything or constantly being told what to do instead of figuring out things for himself as he was definitely the smartest of the 3 and as you said we already know him from 2 and 3 so the shoe filling role doesn’t work anymore. Again I don’t think it worked in the original either. The flamethrower is cracked in the remake. Plasma cutter + Flamethrower is the best Combo in the remake. Also you can exploit the ammo by using less guns. Using 1 or 2 at a time will yield lots of ammo for both.

      @alt0799@alt0799 Жыл бұрын
    • Im actually in the opposite direction but i can agree that Isaacs voice isnt unfitting for the remake . The OG was actually plamned to be for the Xbox and should play out a mix between RE4 and System shock which would explain why Isaac was a silent protag . He is to be planned to have his own agency without other characters constantly command what hebshould do . But then they changed plattforms and even changed the game in some parts to have a clear story and characters on his side to do these objectives . That isaac never talked in scenes when people died was small design-problem because its now very story-driven instead of exploration-driven . And since Dead Space 2 was revealed that Isaac had a voice it suddenly didnt fit to the OGs design. We could say that either the cinematic approach destroyed the original vision of dead space or enchanced the series because the first game went into that direction after porting itvtonthe xbox 360 and ps3 . Both ways are pretty understandable but i would rather see the game fully visioned in its original ideas since the cinematic approach lately leads more to lame passive cutscenes instead of interactive situations in points of the game where you must find a way to change the situation by different choices and solutions . But i think , being the silent protag is much more fitting in games when it isnt cinematic and the player does his own choices what he can do to preventbthe situation or have a solution to these problems and situations.

They wanted the game to play like you remembered it, even if your memories are a tad wrong, like everyone remembers Isaac being voiced, even if they remember him being silent in the OG. He has a voice in our memories now. They also played the OG side by side with the Alpha to make sure its as close to as possible. Of all the games I bought on discount or had thrown at me for free this Christmas I have to say this one has risen to the top and absolutely blown me away. I found a PC disk version of the original in a second hand shop a couple of weeks ago and I have every intention of taking a crack at it once I'm done with this remake. It truly is something special. • After playing the OG and the remake back to back there is a little detail I want to complain about. In the OG game necromorph seems to act like rabbid animal. Running full speed on the player like true killing machine. In the remake they act more like zombie,walking slowly and sometimes running at light speed. And this create a problem in term of difficulty balancing, because they don t add more ennemy to compensate or new difficulty settings (impossible is just hard but with one live) but they also gave more powerfull tool (especially the DS 2 TK) without making the ennemies more ferocious. I guess one could argue they remove ennemy stun after a shot to counterbalance (and stopping you to finish the game on hard with a unupgrade plasma cutter)

  • I don't think Isaac being a silent protagonist ever made sense (and I think it was mildly criticized for it back in 2008.) It's in 3rd person, he's not a cipher the player could put themselves into since the plot mainly involves his relationships, and the awkward silences as NPCs talked to you weren't as smooth or believable as, say, Half-Life. Regarding color temperature, the original came out during the time when every game was grey/brown and DS1 was definitely guilty of that. It was one of my most hated trends of the era, but I can see it appealing more after 15 years and the homogeneity of it being a thing of the past. It definitely was better implemented than, say, MGS4, which is insanely brown/grey.

  • Nicole's age doesn't bother me. She looked too young in the original, while Isaac looked too old, for their canonical ages. The remake is more realistic. Also, your CPU is bottlenecking the 3080ti. CPU is still very important. Traversal stutter is still a thing that is being worked on though, that's what the frametime spikes in certain places is. That is an issue with the game. The performance is your CPU bottlenecking your GPU.

On a side note, I walked into a gamestop the other day and there was someone asking if they had a copy of the Dead Space Remake yet, and the employee said that they were all sold out. I have not seen copies in any store, as whenever they get any copies they sell out quickly. I get why many refuse to pre-order, but sometime its a good idea. By pre-ordering it on Amazon so close to release date, I secured a copy, but I didn't get it until like a week after it actually came out. That way, I could get a refund as it hadn't been shipped yet if the game was terrible on release and it gives time for the initial patches to be applied if I did still want to get it. I am doing the same with RE4 remake.

I recommend making sure you can keep at your target framerate at all times. I had to make a custom resolution in Nvidia control panel to run my monitor at 75 Hertz., if you don't want to do all that, you could just vsync to 60fps

    @kyledupont7711@kyledupont77117 ай бұрын
  • Great review Jared, the stuttering is indeed mostly due to DSR not utilizing the loading bulkhead doors that OG Dead Space used (doors and elevators that took longer than usual to open because they're unloading the current level and loading in the new one once activated), and it's way more noticeable on hard drives than on solid state drives. But overall I agree that DSR is what modern remakes should strive for. Not quite as game changing than the RE2 and 3 remakes (I don't count FF7R as a "remake," it's a completely different game), but Motive showed that they absolutely get what Visceral Games was aiming for when they originally made Dead Space. Can't wait for DS2R, DS2 is right up there with RE4 IMO so I'm hoping that Motive can keep their momentum going.

  • So I know what you’re talking about with visual artifacts with stuff like DLSS or FRS impairing the visuals of the game, but a setting I noticed that was just destroying the visual quality was actually the film grain effect setting that’s on by default. I turned it off and it cleaned up extremely well. Does seem odd you were having a rough time with a 3080 TI, as it performs a good bit better than my 6800XT, and I got close to 100 at 1440p after some fiddling with settings. I know it’s not an apples to apples comparison, but I still can’t help but feel like your rig should have handled it better. Anyways, great video as always, and I’m happy to hear it sounds like you enjoyed the game as much as I did (which is a lot).

  • The remake is great, with the same praise that Jared stated. But for criticism: - Nicole - not how she looks (though I share the same opinion as Jared) but how she acts. When we meet her in remake she acts so cold and dispassionate that even new players immediately pick up that something's not right. - Difficulty - the game is objectively easier than the original, no matter the difficulty level. In the original we were hindered by Isaac's sluggishness and Necromorphs being very aggressive and fast, being able to go into a fast rush mode that they used to overwhelm you. In the remake, the necros at most do a silly jog that builds no pressure. I have seen in videos that they can still do the rabid rush mode that they used to do, but I played the game twice at max difficulty and NEVER saw them do that once. - Kendra and Hammond - now that Issac actually acts like an engineer, Hammond mostly feels like he has nothing to do, he just mopes around for Shen (his beloved) and then dies an IMO much more pathetic death than the original one, where he was killed because he was actually doing things in the ship to help the team. Remake Kendra just feels like she tries too hard to be sympathetic, she immediately raises alarms in the head of any attentive player. Her attempts in the remake to redirect suspicion towards Hammond also comes off much more obvious compared to the original, where the much more heightened paranoia was far palpable. In here, right after the prologue, they react very non-challantly to the crew being monsters, especially compared to the original.

Some of the Tools/Weapons handle now differently , the story was touched upon with decisions that sadly took the mystery of the marker away instead to improve it and the animations on the remake are very lackluster tbh . And especially that the vision of the OG Dead Space had a different impact and its noticable that it was meant to be much more open in its design originally but was changed later on to be linear . The remake made a fantastic job but i would even assume that the remake is more of an action game instead of an horror game .

That was with fsr in quality mode. I did a little bit of investigating into this, and what I found that made the game hitchy for me was my memory tuning. I had went through and tuned my memory using the Ryzen calculator when I got my PC, saved the profile and never looked back. But after disabling my custom profile and running XMP instead I found the game to have very bad hitching in certain spots. So maybe this a specific thing to Ryzen CPUs and how they handle their resources? I have no clue, aside from being able to recognize settings and what they do a little more than the average person, I am by no means good at tuning nor at tracking a problem down to a specific thing. My buddy played with a 5700xt and an Intel i5 I believe 10 series (not amazing CPUs, but not bad) with XMP enabled and he didn't have hitches like me with XMP enabled. I enabled my custom profile back and the hitches were all gone. If anyone else has had a similar experience please do share.
