  • Actually, some of these "tips" aren't entirely accurate. Of course, style is up the the individual since "art (beauty) is in the eye of the beholder", but, historically, one of the rules of design is to have your furniture touching - and even the front two legs at least should be on top of - and area rug. It is proven to help anchor a room and make all the pieces look intentional and not like they were just thrown in as an after thought. Idea such as this can be considered fact since it is based on humans and how our eye both sees things and communicates said information to the brain, which then interprets it , giving us the picture we see in our mind. At that point of course you can either like the way it looks or not. Some people prefer things very precise and the small details matter to them. Others are more of a "big picture" type and don't see details unless they are pointed out. Either way, if you should put down an area rug and it just isn't finishing things off like you thought it would, or the room doesn't look cohesive.......etc, ....you know what I mean. Something just looks off somehow.....check your area rug. Odds are it's probably even a bit small. Since rugs are can be fairly pricey and most people don't realize how much impact rugs and flooring can really have on a room, most people will opt for a smaller size which is less expensive thinking that it's big enough. When in doubt, however, and of course if you can afford it, invest in the bigger size. Food for thought
