It always pisses me off that dental is separate from health insurance. Insurance companies are the devil. I do like my dentist though and he’s pretty affordable out of pocket but people less fortunate than me would have a much harder time.

A dentist wanted me to paint his house. When I got there, I jokingly told him an estimate would cost $100, every hole regardless of size would cost at least $300 a piece. He said, "That's ridiculous!". I told him that's exactly what I said in your office last year. True story!

Not that a five year degree or student loans means much, just about everyone with a bachelor's degree could say the exact same thing. Mean while they like to pretend they have MD which required eight years (four undergrad and four medical) plus another three to seven years of residency. As for the equipment aspect, most dentist don't own a private practice.

Eactly! What thy won't tell you is the fact it's just another scheme to harm the consumer. It's the use of "scarcity." Limiting goods and services to the few keeps the high cost above all. We are seeing this in the "pet" health care insurance industrytoday. Also, millinials may not be aware, but our parents and their parents remember the days of cheap yet effective medical care. Actually, it was in the sixties when both Big-Pharma and Attorney services sought and received media advertizing to the public. Once that was achieved, we've seen the costs soar to current levels. Foe example, the use of lawsuits. That was quite rare back in the day. Yet today you can sue anyone for any reason. The average GOP supporter back in the eighties and ninties claimed it was the public's fault in being too reliant on lawsuits when in fact mass advertising was the norm. However, gaining legal assistance is difficult unless your "case" meets the cookie-cutter type that brings hefty sums in compersation to both the plaitiff and or his attorney. However, common scams are rarely fought in court due to the fact that most attorneys will avoid seeking litigation without being paid accordingly. It is simply not worth their attention. However, if you are inclined financially, they will preform as needed. The same is in the medical industry. Especially, now with Big-Pharma. Daily we are told of another "miricle" is available to all people needing treatment with this drug or another. Yet, we've seen rogue practices of increasing the price of certain drugs and based on what the market will bear. Or, for what they assume. Recently, the costs of Insulin that has been marketed for decades to treat diabetes suddenly shot up in the price that threated people on a fixed income. The point I'm making is the fact there is a war against the American consumer. Wall Street, "too big to fail," dreams up new attacks, legal or not, to enrich themselves. And, for those who criticize their actions, they revert to the old mentality that all attempts to "control" and "micromanage" their bottom line is the work of socialists or communists. That any infringement in the normal operation of the free market system is a sin that can't be tolerated. What they won't tell you is the fact their constant lobbying efforts the past fifty years has created a system of corruption never seen before as it is now. Yet, we are discussing Dentistry in America. And while you consider that, remember to monitor the upcoming industry of pet health care insurance. You will see the same stencil applied. And, all things are rare and costly these days. and, there are plenty of reasons why and by whom benefits as a result. One thing you will never see is a major break to benefit the consumer.
In 1 year we make enough to pay our assistants for 5 Years & our Materials are paid off by the 2nd year. Ea Dentist has his own price & can set it to what ever they please to, it’s one of the biggest money schemes PERIOD.

Even with straight white teeth and dental coverage, preventative dental care or minor procedures are ridiculously expensive.
No it’s only $60 for a normal cleaning. Now if you have periodontal disease you will need scaling and root planing, that will cost more.
@@LordLoMR2 a normal cleaning is the only thing I’d consider affordable. That’s literally only one service lol . For the same amount you can have a small operation done at an urgent care clinic, and that’s twice what you’d pay for any other standard procedure like a physical or a pap.

Probably because people thought dental care wasn't necessary and was more cosmetic. But recent research has shown that proper dental care is valuable and even things like braces (which seem like a purely cosmetic thing) can improve health.
Dentists or any business or service can charge whatever they want , it's a free market , if you don't like it then don't use it nobody's obligated to offer there services to you for cheap

In Canada, dentist's are considered a business, where as doctor's are a practice. This is stupid & dangerous. I've had some dentist's preform some _super_ shady 'business practices' to "save money". 🙄
Tell me about it. It's not so far from that system here. Optical & Dental are separate insurances entirely here so basically nothing gets covered and everything is out-of-pocket expenses.

In 2013 I went to Dominican Republic, flight was 350, dentist got my tooth fixed and whitened for 25 dollars.
I will never understand why dental and vision is barely ever covered. Both things are incredibly important to daily life and taking care of your eyes and teeth can be life saving. People legitimately cannot be productive without corrective vision devices, which are incredibly expensive. And don't even get me started on the safety risks of not having vision care.

Because they don't have any oversight and don't entirely follow evidence based practices. Its not like medical where its heavily regulated. So they are free to upsell people into unnecessary procedure. Its near impossible for a dentist or office to lose their license to practice, short of killing someone (which has happened).
Generally speaking, it's a myth that people worry about their smile. We just want healthy teeth. That's all.

All I can say is I put off going for a long time and ended up being hospitalized. Going sooner will almost always be cheaper than going later. Take care of yourself and I hope you’re doing well.

I lost my dental insurance and had to go to a low income clinic paid by the county. This dentist was a joke! He said I had 17 cavities when I had regularly gone before. I opted to not return. 5 years later I went to a diff dentist and confirmed I had zero cavities.

I had to sit with 2 abscesses for about a year because of this crap, and my poor husband had to stop in the middle of treatment because his employer cancelled his benefits. He quit that job to find another one with benefits so that he could continue, only to discover that no one will hire him because his mouth was left unfinished and looks pretty bad.

I have health insurance and supplemental dental insurance. My dentist said I needed some preventative work. Insurance covered 0%.

This is so weird.... I’ve been planning a trip to Mexico to go get my wisdom teeth extracted that been hurting for like 4 months now. Then this video just showed up on my feed. Mexico is really the place to go for good profesional work and great price point. Everytime I get some teeth work here in the US they tend to over charge and do a crappy job.

The company I worked for was forced to close down due to a unsustainable drop in business due to pandemic. I lost my insurance so got Medicaid which I used one time for wisdom teeth extraction. They did a very bad job, FORGETTING to give me antibiotic prescription when I left. They simply forgot, no apologies. Two trips to doctor and ER, then back to Dentist when they opened after their three day weekend hours. For 16 days I had major swelling, pain, bleeding and could not open my mouth. When the swelling finally went down there was a large shard of broken tooth left protruding. Had to go back AGAIN. Before they tried to up sell me like a car salesman. Then they made comments about “the State”. It all became clear after I researched. Most Dentists are conservative, no problem, however there is an underlying bias against low income as there is very little over sight in Dentistry. Also, the wife of the owner that did the work was talking about her sister’s baby shower and Im laying there very worried. So why do they take on Medicaid recipients at all? Is it a sadistic profession that attracts predators? Based on past experiences I am starting to believe this is true. Being a dentist is a lousy way to get rich quick. I will never go back to that dentist and now have to screen future dentists about their Dental Philosophies. It’s sad that an election result can effect how someone treats a patient.
@@ToneTraveler that’s a horrible experience, definitely see your point there. Yes I work in the ER and we get a lot of patients that have Medicaid and we have to turn them away. Unfortunately, Medicaid or Medicare most dental, medical , vision visits are most of the time shitty services because the hospitals/clinics don’t make money seeing those types patients. And by those types of patients I mean low income/poverty patients which majority are Hispanics and black people. The whole point is to make money off peoples insurance and bill them. It’s a horrible situation!!!!

Dental School in US is 500k. Dental products/equipment very expensive. Staff wants 25/hr. New PPE requirements. Taxes, Rent and Insurance. And you guys want CHEAP dental treatment....get real.
I went in to have a tooth pulled. I walked out in tears and a list of $10k worth of work they claim i needed. Healthcare is not affordable, it's criminal. The tooth i needed pulled? Half of it fell out months later so the pain isn't as bad and the infection on my gum seems to have somewhat went away. 🙍

that's really sad. I mean, I'm from post-soviet country. Propaganda and neoliberals(they are a lot more different than in US, communists in post-soviet countries are absolutely different than western toothless reds) saying about punitive stomatology in USSR without pain-killers, but those times many countries at the other side of the border didn't used painkillers too. So, I got my wisdom teeth deleted for around 12$ including painkillers. I had to stay in the queue of that government clinics for around an hour to do the first check and when the specialist only in that kind of surgery(yep, he is an orthodontic surgeon) made an x-ray prescription( there is a rentgenologist downstairs who does X-ray photos for 3$ and 5$ for entire jaw) and after half an hour I hot my film. He took a look out of the queue because it is fast and told me that it would cost for around 11$ and he would be free at monday 10:30( it was saturday morning). So, he did it at monday, my teeth was growing almost horizontally and he has succeeded, put some stitches and told me to come at the day after tomorrow for an antibiotics injection. So, 2 more visits and I've paid each time around 2-3$. Average salary in my country is around 200-300$. But it was organized by professor that working in that clinics and know her very good, she typically points to the people for doing the job of narrow specialist. It wasn't special price because of my connections and I knew that it worth money that I've paid: new single use tools, new syringes and so on. Equipment wasn't completely out of date, but mostly it is okay for 10 years old equipment that was properly serviced. And this is what was left from old " republic dentist polyclinic 1", half of the building is privatized and there is an another dentist clinic just in that building. The trick with price if fairly simple: you pay only for consumables, amortization of equipment and so on. The rest is paid by government and when a doctor exceeds the plan of patients that he has taken, he can take everything in his pocket. But he had to buy consumable materials that are cheap, simple, mass produced and cost really cheap. In old times they had salary, that was based on quantity of patients and patient didn't paid at all. There was a queue and you had to wait a lot. And now I'm confused that regular operations that was done in that clinic almost everyday since 60's for free until 1991 and after for absolutely fair price as far as I remember( My entire family was visiting that clinic), in US it would cost thousands of dollars. I understand price for complex operations, that require specific equipment like ilizarov apparatus, cancer treatment, neurosurgery and so on. I mean you can do 4 nasal surugical operations at once for around 600$ in private clinic by all-inclusive system, plus you can make a phone call to a doctor at working time if you got any questions. After asking some questions and sniffing out organization of that clinic I've just realized that doctors having a share in that business. Not some sort of entrepreneur guy that just bought equipment, rent/bought a building, hired doctors and then opened a clinics. No, It was a bunch of doctors and one guy that had a little more money at the begging: they share profit among themselves proportionally what they have invested. And that type of business organization is called cooperative company and used in soviet union...probably, since the beginning( by sure including Stalin's times too). My grandma(babushka, I know that many people like that word) was working in one of those places as a seamstress.

dental abscess-quite a nasty thing. Just do the diagnostic, follow the recommendations and visit a doctor just to check , if everything is at least satisfactory.

My family comes from Wisconsin and southern Minnesota, an area where selenium soil content is very high. Excessive selenium contributes to caries and gum diseases. My grandfather had his teeth removed at 19 years old, and my father died with one tooth at fifty-two years old. After an infection in a tooth that caused lock-jaw, I had all my teeth pulled at twenty-one years and replaced them with dentures. The reason I did this was the many toothaches and an estimate from an American dentist of $2,000 in 1971(that's almost $13,000 today) for root canals and bridgework. When I asked for his guarantee, he laughed, he told me that my teeth were "fragile", and that he wouldn't guarantee his work. My grandmother got her dentures at 25 years old, and I have nieces and nephews who lost the majority of their teeth by their 30's. The funny thing: not one of us were meth addicts or excess sugar users. By the by, I haven't had a toothache in 50 years, and my teeth are straight and pretty white. My first set of dentures, including the pulling of all my teeth cost $350 in Mexico, and this last set cost $550 in Mexico. My choosing dentures has saved me a lot of pain, misery and a lot of money. Additionally, I had childhood arthritis, which vanished after I had all my teeth pulled. My infected teeth were poisoning my entire body. Bad teeth can kill you. American dentists do have one of the best technologies to save teeth. the problem is that some would like to save teeth and don't mind paying some money because they can. For example, if you were a millionaire, you probably saved your teeth and be happy with all your own teeth. Much better than dentures for sure. However, most of us are not millionaires so there you go. You get more affordable one. Good for you.
I do have dental coverage as a part of my health insurance. I am not afraid of any procedures. What I am afraid of is that dentists somehow seem to find and suggest unnecessary procedures. I have healthy teeth. absolutely no problems. But, each time the dentists would like to suggest procedures that are more cosmetic or not necessary. I have a Ph.D. and yet I am left worrying if I am second guessing the dentists. Ever since fluorides made dental decay rare, dentists are inventing new procedures that insurance does not cover and force patients fork out money.
I'm all too aware of this entire thing 42 years old, I have been steadily loosing teeth at the gums over the last 2 years and only have 1 root canal/crown that hasn't failed ($10,000+ out of pocket wasted). I'm trying to hold out for implants, roughly 20k out of pocket. The biggest thing about dental insurance is it doesn't cover nearly enough out of pocket costs. A lot only cover 50% of "major" work, like root canals, crowns, etc. US Medicaid will only cover 1 set of dentures and 0 crowns or caps. So they reward you for getting dentures at a younger age than needed, causing bone loss and worse.
Why: Education: Dental school costs between $300,000-420,000 not including interest or existing debt from college. Overhead: the average dental office needs to make $250,000 a year just to keep the lights on. Materials, staff, malpractice insurance, and PPE are not free. Lab fees: labs can charge the dentist hundreds or thousands of dollars for crowns, dentures, Invisalign, etc. and that gets passed onto the patient. Continuing education: to learn more skills and maintain their licenses, dentists must pay tens of thousands of dollars for continuing education courses each year. There is more than just this, but these are some of the main reasons why dental care costs what it does.

I went to the dentist to get decay of second molar and he removed the decay on top of the tooth and put a filling but left decay on the side. I didn’t notice until I got home and looked in the mirror. Also while removing the decay he kept scrapping the tool against my gum making them bleed a bit. I never went there again.

My great-grandfather died at 97 and according to my mother (his granddaughter) he never went to a dentist his entire life but still maintained most of his teeth till the end. I didn't come to know him well because of language barrier (he was a Japanese immigrant) and plus he died when I was 14 but for all I know he only ate Japanese food and drank green tea. As an immigrant I presume he had a really rough life so I don't think caring about his teeth was a priority.

The truth is there is a connection to poor dental hygiene that leads to heart disease. It is important to visit a dentist at least sometime in your life.
The reason it costs so much is much simpler .... (I worked in dental) 1. Dental products are grossly over priced. An analogy, it's like buying a Kia Rio for as much as a jet plane. 2. There is a fee schedule set by the College of Dental Surgeons that dentist can not go below. Most dentist follow it but a small number go above. 3. Dentist are in it for the money so they take a big cut. It's dentist on the College board that set pricing.
Dental care here in Czech republic is cheap. 50 bucks for a rootcanel. I have friends from the US who fly here with their family and have a vacation and get there teeth worked on. It ends up being cheaper then going to their local dentist

Dentist here. Going to a private dental practice is expensive everywhere in the world... But it wasn't until I talked to people from the US and Canada that I realized just how expensive it is there. Materials, renting or owning a clinic, paying your assistant, all sums up and makes it expensive for us to treat you, but the prices in the US are like, 10? or more times bigger than the ones in my country, it's INSANE.

The stereotype of evil dentists is so wild to me bc in my experience, they are usually the kindest and most pleasant medical professionals I've visited, even when it comes to fillings, extractions, surgery, etc. But, they're still all way too expensive and inaccessible. (Except for l the one who gave my mom a heavy discount and let her pay it off at like $30/month with no interest after she explained her mouth was a disaster bc her parents were abusive and neglectful and didn't take her to the dentist as a kid. That guy was cool. We need more of that guy.)

Dental services in the US are ridiculously overpriced... I'm dentist from Iraq and I perform RCT on molar teeth for 120 iraqi denars ( and anterior teeth for less )which is like 85 dollars Not only here...dentists from egypt, syria, Lebanon and countries in south east Asia do dental services for pennies compared to US dentists. And yes professionally ( although not all dentists know or want "shady less expensive practices" to practice professionally ) And of course scams are rampant here too, I'm just mentioning prices range.
Dentists in US do have to spend about half a million dollars in education to get their licenses and the cost of living here is expensive. The problem is some greedy people such as DSOs and some greedy dentists.
Dental insurance is a sham. It's been capped off at 1,200 since the 70s. Most millennials I know never go to the dentist, and will inevitably be paying thousands in the future for crowns and implants. When ONE crown costs 2,000, you can see why it quickly can bring about financial ruin. IT NEEDS TO CHANGE.

Dental healthcare can be expensive here in Germany too but I get a free checkup every year and the costs of my braces were reimbursed, all in my normal health insurance.

There are 3 important factors: *are the braces a necessity?* As in, are your teeth in such disarray that the need orthodontic intervention. Secondly, is the patient under 18? Thirdly, is the patient playing an active role in successfully completing the treatment? If all of these criteria are met, and your health insurance approves of the treatment, every bill from the orthodontist would be half the cost. After completing the treatment successfully, we then sent those bills to our health insurance and they paid back the half that my parents put in. This made my braces effectively free. I was under 18 when this happened. If I’d been an adult at the time, they may not have reimbursed us the half we paid. Not all insurances do this btw. I have a friend who got to do the whole ordeal twice under the age of 18 with the same criteria as my health insurance. But I also had a friend whose parent paid for a pretty expensive private health insurance and never got help when he has his braces. Their insurance policy didn’t included orthodontist procedures.
Maybe this video should have a disclaimer that says it only applies for NA folks. In Brazil the treatment cost for fixing your teeth is below R$3.000,00 (which translates to less than 1K USD).
In the USA, dental care is considered mostly a "cosmetic" procedure, not a medical necessity, especially to insurance providers. Ever notice there's a line dentists don't cross? It's a specialty service, like podiatry. Insurance companies further that divide. Even when it's proven a "medical necessity" due to disease, you will have to see a Dental Surgeon/MD. You can be meticulous, but "body rot" of all kinds (including cavities and cancer) happens to each and every human in some form or fashion.

Just called the dentist I was suppose to visit last February (as I had just received dental insurance from my job) before the pandemic to reschedule a year later. Unfortunately the dentist that could see me because of my insurance is no lo get there. They offered me to see the owner of the business but he is a premium dentist so my cost would be a lot higher. I had to refuse, I mean we are still under a pandemic and money is tight right now. This completely depressing, how is a civil servant who works more than 40hrs a week not covered properly with dental. My dental insurance is already expensive! This country is terrible!

What kills me is that I have great medical insurance through my employer however, my vision/ dental insurance is complete trash. I took a severe hammer blow to my lower jaw right up front busted lip and all . Wound up with an abscess on my front incisors and had to get a bridge which was about 3500....after insurance did it’s measly 500 dollars worth of coverage. Anyone dealing with that I feel your pain both figuratively and physically!

My father's dentist waited till he was 80 years old to tell him to remove his teeth (he still had alk is them). He was smart though, he had them make an exact replica, stains crooked ones and all.

10 years ago, it cost me $120 for a regular teeth cleaning with no insurance. In Mexico, it was $25 and no appointment necessary. Same sh$t. Same cleaning. Same scrubbing. Yet dentist in the USA required a full set of X-rays before doing any cleaning... you read that right. I went to two different dentists and they both wanted X-rays. Why TF do they need X-rays? In case of “issues”, apparently. I call BS, it’s just thoroughly cleaning for f$ck sake. And I asked a friend with health insurance and they paid $120 as a copay with their dental insurance too... which was more BS because they pay monthly premiums just to pay the same amount as me without insurance? It’s laughable.

the service has sky rocketed and the dentist knows it. they are, what looks to me, simple procedures yet they keep the prices in the thousands. So one bit of advice, avoid all sugars and starches for if sugar is in your system at high amounts, it not only affects the body, it also affects teeth. So give them up and enjoy healthy strong teeth. And if course, make regular appointments.
I'd like to point out in the UK under 18s and students get free dental care plus the elderly and people on benifits. Not only this but if your teeth are bad enough your bill can be entirely covered by the NHS. Typically for people who don't fall under these categories the NHS covers 80% of their bill. People can go private which is the only time that you would see figures like they showed in this

4:00 Here in Quebec Canada, i consulted five different dentists with my broken and or rotten theets and all of them firmly refused to do extraction ''because of the impact it would have on my overall health afterward''. Told them i would never be able to affort thoses repairs that cost over 1000$ per thoot and so in my case it would be better to just extract all of the rotten and dead ones because of the danger of poisoning (ill pass for the breath you end up with when your rotting alive) and to remove the painful broken ones since i will eat and drink more without the upsetting pain. I explained to them the plan i figured out so i can affort at least the basic interventions such as extractions. My plan of action was and still is, according to my budget: Extracting 1 theet every month until only the good ones remain in my mouth, and then do an evaluation for me to know the price of one or two dental prothesis and i would comeback as soon as i would have managed to get the total amount of cash needed to proceed and finaly enjoy my new life with theets to eat and smile. None of them where interested.. All of them gave me answers like; Nobody work like this anymore, that silly '50s fashion of theeth extraction. One even told me that THERE IS, actualy, a place in montreal where you can get extractions as many as you want as long as you have the cash and that the man is knowed by many dentists including him as ''the tooth puller''. He said that like its a funny story. I'm sick of this hearthless mafia called DENTIST. More gain is their gasoline, being human to their client is a lost of time and money. They'r running a luctrative juicy buiseness. Strict greed. ITS A SHAME!!! Do they have at least basic ethic codes as proffessional healthcare providers?
The costs are high in the US because it's highly regulated. Allow competition and those cheaper dentists in other countries would happily sell their services in the US if not prohibited from doing so.

The dental industry is one of the most backwards industries of all time. Thy drill, fill, and bill. Look up root canals and the dangers they cause to your over all health. Not only are they unhealthy they have a high failute rate. The industry should've grown but its such a money making system they leave it as is. I’ve researched this and came to the same conclusion, the dental industry is a racket. Imagine my shock when I learned that regrowth of tooth enamel has been observed after patients switched to a particular diet (whole foods that are high in fat soluble vitamins and low in phytic acid, i.e. avoid most grains). But now I’m wondering, what are the possible alternatives to a root canal? How can this type of tooth decay/damage be fixed, especially when caused by poorly done fillings?

At 30 years old after saving a decent amount of money I had to have all of my teeth removed and dentures put in their stead. It was 9k after insurance. Leading up to that I went the majority of my life with hardly any dental coverage or the means to and by the time I did it was too late. Brushing 2x a day, flossing and mouthwash wasn't quite enough for some reason. It was mentally exhausting brushing my teeth and spitting out chunks of a tooth so often without the means to do much.
Sadly a lot of study's are actually saying that some instances of tooth decay can be genetic.
