  • The irony of all this is that Russia launched this attack to keep Ukraine from joining NATO and forming closer ties with Western Europe, while the attack itself has probably resulted in Ukrainian troops receiving more training on NATO weapons systems than if they had actually joined NATO.

  • A good explanation from General Petraeus. Tank itself is less important. But once the tank work with other weapon/units, it increase the total fire power in order of magnitudes, and also for that other weapons/units. This is called a synergy, and it is a core principle of combined arms. “Quantity has a quality all its own” has implied no synergy onto it.

    @budbas@budbas Жыл бұрын
    • Yes he said it the way it needs to be said. The Tank isn't the answer to combat operations it's an important word in the sentence. An infantry rifleman is part of the sentence as is artillery. People tend to focus on the invincibility idea or the awesome power idea of a Tank but it's really the queen on the chess board (as seen early in the war a pawn with an NLAW can still take her off the board).

    • They dont deliver many tanks as of now. Poland delivers 10, Norway is thinking about 4, Finnland and Swedens numbers are unknown, Spain thought about 7, Greece and Slowakia cant sent any (they have good reasons thought), Netherlands thinks about sending only a handfull. To reach even 100 in this batch is unlikely. However, there are rumours about Germany preparing to sent in 90 battletanks in the long run, wich would most likely be bought out of the stock of older and used pieces that the industry holds (total numbers in stock: around 120). Thats why Scholz put on so much pressure on the US to sent Abrams. The US military alone has 4000 discarded yet usable Abrams in stock. Only 10% of them would be sufficient to turn the whole war around

  • Without adequate air support, we really can't talk about combined arms operations. Giving anti-air systems without fighter jets makes it really hard to use these tanks as effective offensive tools against an enemy who has advantages in numbers, resources, and airforce. It is a huge step forward that might be significant for making Ukraine able to defend itself. But it isn't enough to end this war.

The Ukraine war is a war of attrition and requires a more hearty , durable alternative that is more fuel efficient. This is precisely why Israel never bought the M1 tank.

      @Etruscan70@Etruscan70 Жыл бұрын
    • @@Etruscan70 Former German soldier here (not a tanker). I generally agree. I'm under the impression that the US finally sent the M1s to kick Germany's butt to finally release the Leopards, as Ben Hodges has pointed out. The M1's problem isn't just the doctrine, the biggest issue is the weight. Most of their infrastructure is built around the lighter soviet tanks and the soft ground in spring is also not ideal for such high ground pressure. The Leopard 2 has the lowest ground pressure of all delivered tank models. It's funny how so many people make jokes about the older Leopard 1 being promised now as well, when in fact that tank probably makes a lot of sense because of its mobility and much lower weight. its firepower can be upgraded to use the same gun as the M1 and Leo 2 but its mobility on this battlefield is probably superior to both. And not every tank will fight T90s anyway, the biggest threats are artillery, drones and hand held weapons. And to avoid those you need to be fast and mobile and avoid getting hit in the first place. And that's EXACTLY what the Leo 1 was designed for back in the day. I'm sure the M1 will be helpful somewhere, if only to be held as a reserve around Kiev to free up Ukrainian forces there. The M1 also eats a crapton of fuel for breakfast so I'm not sure if that's ideal for sustained operations anyway, depending on the situation. For now I'm just happy my former home (no longer living there) finally got its ass in gear and is sending the tanks that are required, and if it took M1 deliveries to get that done.. so be it. Let's also not forget the major morale boost for the Ukrainian tankers when they hear they're getting both the Leo and the M1. That alone is valuable as well.

I think that perhaps largely applies in offensive operations, but combining with infantry (especially when mechanized) is really important, and I honestly don't think he's explaining that very well. In layperson's terms, tanks (supported by infantry) take ground; and infantry (supported by tanks) hold ground. And infantry are far more important in cities and any built up areas. If Ukraine gets the tanks it needs, it can make a major counterattack in a few months. If those don't arrive in time (in large enough quantities, with newly trained Ukrainian crews, etc) then Ukraine will have to focus on holding off the Russian attack.

  • Artillery is still the King of Battle. Tanks fire a 105 mm round -- straight.. Against armored front. An artillery shell fires a 155 or more sized shell that lands from above on the succeptible part of the defense. I'd rather have a lot of 155 Palladins than and some HIMARS versus a few tanks. And artillery is easier to train - because you don't shoot and fire at the same time.
