The leaders of the United States and Germany announced Wednesday that they will send tanks to Ukraine. Former CIA director and former commander of US Central Command, retired Army General David Petraeus, joins CNN’s Erin Burnett to discuss. #CNN #News
As a grandson of WWII soldiers I never thought possible of welcoming German tanks rolling into Ukraine… I want to express my infinite gratitude to everyone helping our country.
That is well said Outcast
To bad it's taken this long for the west to pull there heads out and do the right thing. Maybe by June they'll send some warplanes.
Maybe you could leave the Iron Crosses on, they would terrify the Russians, as would American flag emblems on Abrams.Psyops.
We stand with you ukraine 🇺🇦 Slava ukraini putting and his rabid dogs of war will pay for this
Tanks with nazi logos killed millions of Russians. What Russians reaction would be if they seem again? It will undoubtedly unite the Russians. Be aware of what you wish for
The irony of all this is that Russia launched this attack to keep Ukraine from joining NATO and forming closer ties with Western Europe, while the attack itself has probably resulted in Ukrainian troops receiving more training on NATO weapons systems than if they had actually joined NATO.
Classic example of a self fulfilling prophecy.
Exactly. As awful as Putin and his fellow monsters are, they also live in the Middle Ages and it makes them dumb.
Ukraine joining NATO ? On what means ? Democracy ?

Supplying Ukraine w tanks should have been done from day 1!! Countless lives lost by sitting on their hands on this!!
just dont be fooled, this isnt about to let UA to win, its about to have war as long as possible
The Abrams, Leopard, and Challengers don’t burn that easily unlike all the Russian tanks that already have.
Different approaches - we protect the manpower better.
So Putin is going to really like them when he takes them from the Nazi Ukrainians. Good to know.
US dollars burn the same as Rubles.
They did in Syria with the SDF on the Turks and parts of Iraq with RPG on the backside of Abrams with hit and runs by ISIS. And now are talking about Russia!
“Supreme “. Huh
A good explanation from General Petraeus. Tank itself is less important. But once the tank work with other weapon/units, it increase the total fire power in order of magnitudes, and also for that other weapons/units. This is called a synergy, and it is a core principle of combined arms. “Quantity has a quality all its own” has implied no synergy onto it.
Yes he said it the way it needs to be said. The Tank isn't the answer to combat operations it's an important word in the sentence. An infantry rifleman is part of the sentence as is artillery. People tend to focus on the invincibility idea or the awesome power idea of a Tank but it's really the queen on the chess board (as seen early in the war a pawn with an NLAW can still take her off the board).
also only the presence of tanks bring huge morale boost and confidence for the casual footsoldier.. when i was trained as jaeger its a powerful feeling when these metal monsters are around you
Tanks and infantry are teamed. Tanks without infantry are doomed. Infantrymen have a love hate relationship with tanks. Lol
Well said. "Quantity has a quality all its own" should be relegated as only true regarding what worked for the Soviets when they were able to push back the invading Germans ...80 years ago and at a massive cost to their future.
Outdated thinking tanks are obsolete in the age of drone warfare. Ukraine has taken out 80 odd russian tanks with drones. A kamikaze drone is more mobile.
Patreas is a great choice to speak on such tactics. Very interesting.
Love hearing from General Petraeus. Nice to have a knowledgeable General speaking about this war.

So knowledgeable that compares the US army's miserable performance in Afghanistan and Iraq with Russian fighting the professional Ukrainian army equipped with all that NATO can deliver!
@@barnowl4528 He did not have any reputation before that. His biggest achievement was to pay GOOD terrorists in Iraq to watch his back when withdrawing from Iraq. Combined arms the key. Russians ignore this to their cost. One of the best analysts
They already did ignore it. Remember the tanks rolling into urban environments with no infantry support in the early days of the war? I was shocked to see that. They got whacked.
Nope! It’s not 1945 and Russian are not “Dumb” like you.
The U.K. had more balls and was the first Western country to provide Ukraine with tanks ..So please , give credit where it’s due !!!
One would be really naive to think Ben Wallace acted unilaterally, without support from DC; he’s just just a parsley to push Germany over the line. The credit really belongs to Alex Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, who wasn’t hesitating in his support for Ukraine, which probably helped deflect some attention from his domestic challenges. Any pose of UK grandeur on the world stage is perhaps slightly tone deaf, given the, let’s say it politely, transitional current situation. How’s that Brexit working out for ya…..

It takes 22 weeks to train on the m1 and for every 1 hour of operation there is 3 hours of maintenance. Are they sending all the maintenance support crews needed to keep these tanks moving?
Nope! They are being taught by the U.S. as we text. 🤔 I forgot where but I think they flew in a bunch from Ukraine to N.C. for training.

Will be interesting to compare the performance of the Abrams vs the Leopard. In tank vs tank comparisons I've seen, it's usually the Leopard rated as the best.
u ***** s**t...this its not a game
The Abrams uses the Leopards Gun and firing system , manufactured in the US under licence from Rheinmetal and the armour is Chobam, a British invention
Can these tanks do anything without the air cover that the US normally provides?
Yeah they will burn.
You're about to find out...
Can these neo nazis I mean Ukrainians do anything without the US giving them money and weapons?
depends. they dont need air cover if Ukraine is able to prevent Russia from having it. Ukraine was able to push hundreds of miles east of karkiv without air cover and using much less capable tanks than what they are getting now. Taking Izyum, a large city with a lot of russian forces, was a huge win..that Ukraine accomplished with very little major US equipment. Taking Melitpol with 130 western tanks and 50 bradleys will be easy in comparison.
I would guess there are some Ukrainian pilots getting F16 training right now. When the tanks roll out F16s will be included and the pilots will be ready. Don’t show all of your cards at once.
Also, Ukraine is getting more than 100 tanks...more like 200 - You left out Spain, Estonia, Poland, etc.
Wrong, maybe 100
😂 all tanks that Russia doesn’t destroy the will now own! This is a bad investment to give a bunch of Ukraine losers anything! They have no chance will 1000 tanks!
The good news is the tanks they are getting seem to be mainly 2A6 and 2A5 which are fairly modern. The 2A4 is 40 years old. Though still good and with composite Armour it would be better to upgrade them to Leopard 2A5 standard. I don't know if there is time for this.
No. they are getting 31 Abrams which won't be in Ukraine until next year. Then about 100 leopards from various countries and 12 Challenger.
They dont deliver many tanks as of now. Poland delivers 10, Norway is thinking about 4, Finnland and Swedens numbers are unknown, Spain thought about 7, Greece and Slowakia cant sent any (they have good reasons thought), Netherlands thinks about sending only a handfull. To reach even 100 in this batch is unlikely. However, there are rumours about Germany preparing to sent in 90 battletanks in the long run, wich would most likely be bought out of the stock of older and used pieces that the industry holds (total numbers in stock: around 120). Thats why Scholz put on so much pressure on the US to sent Abrams. The US military alone has 4000 discarded yet usable Abrams in stock. Only 10% of them would be sufficient to turn the whole war around
Without adequate air support, we really can't talk about combined arms operations. Giving anti-air systems without fighter jets makes it really hard to use these tanks as effective offensive tools against an enemy who has advantages in numbers, resources, and airforce. It is a huge step forward that might be significant for making Ukraine able to defend itself. But it isn't enough to end this war.
German Gepard is the short answer.

If HIMARS is so effective than why we need to send tanks
@@maximgrey8174 Your point is well taken about the American public not actually understanding the horrors of war. Nevertheless we understand, as does almost every other country on earth, that a Russian victory absolutely means the end of self-rule by Latvia and Estonia and a half dozen other countries. You know that and so does everyone else. So by not stopping Putin now the entirety of Eastern Europe, and then Germany and the rest of Central Europe, may be in a permanent state of semi-war. Listening to a western general about how a tank is the centerpiece but still just a piece that is excellent when used and supported properly in combined arms warfare. Then there's the Russians who seem to think tanks don't need infantry support or recon or air support or artillery support or anything and then they wonder why their war has been a disaster, why they've lost so many tanks and APCs that they are now dusting off old shit retired since the early 80's and trying to get this stuff ready to go fight for lack of anything better.
Ukraine prooved that a couple of theams with manpads are very valuable. And russian showed that theyr logistics doesnt exist. They deploy troops/vehicules on the ground and they wander around. What ukraine needs is constant missions and target aquisitions, non stop
And now Ukraine wants F16 fighters for air support/superiority no doubt.
True. Im curious how the Abrahams armor will do. They aren't getting our newest depleted uranium armor but they will still be the most advanced version of the tank and well beyond any russian tank. Their ability to communicate on the battlefield is second to none and often overlooked.

The German Leopard tanks are best used on the Frontline battlefields. The Abrams could be used behind the lines as a mobile artillery piece-shoot and scoot to minimize wear & tear= greater survivability & cheaper maintenance costs.
those "Frontline battlefields" leos were destroyed by isis gorela fighters in Syria........
Spain has the Leopard "E" with unique features like extra front and top armor. I would run away from such a beast in the battlefield. It has a 100% accuracy at 4000 meters distance on the run. Russian tanks' termograph system reaches only to 3200 meters. So they will be detected and destroyed, well in advance, they enter action.
They'll burn all the same. More dead ukrops. Sad!
As a former M1 crewman , the M1 is the wrong tank to use in this environment. M1’s only fit the US doctrine of overweighting force and speed. The Ukraine war is a war of attrition and requires a more hearty , durable alternative that is more fuel efficient. This is precisely why Israel never bought the M1 tank.
@@Etruscan70 Former German soldier here (not a tanker). I generally agree. I'm under the impression that the US finally sent the M1s to kick Germany's butt to finally release the Leopards, as Ben Hodges has pointed out. The M1's problem isn't just the doctrine, the biggest issue is the weight. Most of their infrastructure is built around the lighter soviet tanks and the soft ground in spring is also not ideal for such high ground pressure. The Leopard 2 has the lowest ground pressure of all delivered tank models. It's funny how so many people make jokes about the older Leopard 1 being promised now as well, when in fact that tank probably makes a lot of sense because of its mobility and much lower weight. its firepower can be upgraded to use the same gun as the M1 and Leo 2 but its mobility on this battlefield is probably superior to both. And not every tank will fight T90s anyway, the biggest threats are artillery, drones and hand held weapons. And to avoid those you need to be fast and mobile and avoid getting hit in the first place. And that's EXACTLY what the Leo 1 was designed for back in the day. I'm sure the M1 will be helpful somewhere, if only to be held as a reserve around Kiev to free up Ukrainian forces there. The M1 also eats a crapton of fuel for breakfast so I'm not sure if that's ideal for sustained operations anyway, depending on the situation. For now I'm just happy my former home (no longer living there) finally got its ass in gear and is sending the tanks that are required, and if it took M1 deliveries to get that done.. so be it. Let's also not forget the major morale boost for the Ukrainian tankers when they hear they're getting both the Leo and the M1. That alone is valuable as well.

I took a brief run on ground in Tikrit shoulder and shoulder with you and talks need to happen. Ukraine prospers from veterans like me that will lead

I'm still a bit skeptical. 90 tanks is about the number in one US armored brigade and while these tanks may be better they are not invincible and can still sustain a lot of casualties. They' ll have to be used very intelligently and skillfully to have a big impact....when they actually do arrive in the field and ready for use.

Interesting to hear him describe the tank as the very centerpiece to ground warfare (the way surface naval forces are grouped around supporting the carrier.) I think that perhaps largely applies in offensive operations, but combining with infantry (especially when mechanized) is really important, and I honestly don't think he's explaining that very well. In layperson's terms, tanks (supported by infantry) take ground; and infantry (supported by tanks) hold ground. And infantry are far more important in cities and any built up areas. If Ukraine gets the tanks it needs, it can make a major counterattack in a few months. If those don't arrive in time (in large enough quantities, with newly trained Ukrainian crews, etc) then Ukraine will have to focus on holding off the Russian attack.

"Maximum casualties for Minimal gains" has been the Russian playbook for a long time now....in defensive war, they trade territories and lives to eventually, aided by winter, repel the enemies. In offensive wars, they rely on overwhelming numerical superiority...
The tank is only as good as the supply line.
I love him’ Great General ❤ All support for #Ukraine 🙏

The US and Europe need to pile on and get this done before US elections in 2024. Insurance.
or before christmas if you still believe in Coca-Cola Santa Claus
Tanks alone are a big help. But without Airplanes their effect is also minimal because they are a easy target for the Russian airforce. For that reason we should also provide F16's and other fighterjets to maximize the effect.
You mean that huge Russian airforce that has achieved air superiority over Ukraine? Or the one that keeps its aircraft on the airbases?
Great Idea Tough Guy! See video. kzhead.info/sun/arqAYsWCsHt8pXk/bejne.html
Artillery is still the King of Battle. Tanks fire a 105 mm round -- straight.. Against armored front. An artillery shell fires a 155 or more sized shell that lands from above on the succeptible part of the defense. I'd rather have a lot of 155 Palladins than and some HIMARS versus a few tanks. And artillery is easier to train - because you don't shoot and fire at the same time.
Ask him to speak about the Minsk agreements!
