I turn 18th tonight. It was such a blast to have this whole album as my 17th anthem last year. Now I'm writing this as I think of myself last year when I tried to get out of my comfort zone and survive a quarter-life crisis that had me gone insane. To all the teens out there, I haven't even finished college and I promise you it gets easier. Having control over your own life and having your decisions matter is scary but it feels unbelievably freeing.
For all you teenagers out there freaking out that you're doing life wrong, I'm gonna let you in on a little secret that I wish to god someone had told me. Adulthood is really just day to day bullshitting and imposter syndrome. We're all just bumbling through life and love pretending like we know what the hell is going on and what to do it about it. The only difference between adulthood and being a teenager is bigger consequences for not keeping your shit together, somewhat better control over emotions thanks to our brains fully finishing development of the prefrontal cortex, and the thankful upside of gradually liking yourself and being more comfortable in your own skin that gets stronger with every year past 23. So don't worry, we don't know what the hell we're doing either, we are just as big of an emotional dumpster fire, you aren't doing it wrong and all your friends, parents, teachers, etc feel exactly the same way as you do, even if they don't want to admit it.

It brings a bittersweet smile to my face to hear a song so perfectly describe EXACTLY what I’m going through. I’m 16 years old and I can’t talk to my best friend (and only friend) anymore because my issues are no longer valid in her eyes because she has just lost a close relative. I didn’t tell her about any of my issues until a year after her relative passed (I told her I had been RPED and was on the verge of ending it all; I had just attempted ending myself when I told her this) and she told me that she’s not my therapist and that I’m just being overdramatic. I chose to ignore how much that hurt because she’s still grieving. My family is total mess. My Mum is dying and according to my whole family, I have to look after to her before she goes. I do have a much older sibling who should be helping but he’s nowhere to be found and my twin sister hates my Mum. My cousin who was keeping up the roof over our heads is now seriously ill and soon we’ll have nowhere to live. AND my aunt just went to prison and we have to find the money for court fees. My sister was just diagnosed with epilepsy, we are not close but everyone tells us we should be because we are twins (which is so frustrating). And they also say I’m a terrible sister because I don’t monitor my 16 year old sister’s epilepsy (she wouldn’t let me anyway). With all this going on, it means none of my issues matter in my family. The only thing that brings me a little happiness right now is; my dream to be a doctor, my new job (that pays me minimum wage even though I’m only 16 - in my country, most kids my age can’t get a job because of their age and the ones that do get paid WAY LESS than minimum wage) and that I got an offer to college but I can’t talk about any of that because I have no friends to tell about it and I can’t talk about it at home because according to my Dad it will make my sister “feel bad” because she hasn’t even applied for any sixth form yet and doesn’t want to work. He also says I should be more humble and ‘ladylike’, which is his way of saying I should learn how to cook instead of working. My Dad who was missing most of my childhood and constantly reminds me that I am not his favourite child, I looked up to him greatly until I was 12 because I realised how much he didn’t love me (and that he was a racist sexist twit). I’m also in the middle of my GCSES and I’m predicted 4s which stresses me out because I need 5s to keep that offer to the college and to be a doctor I need way higher than 4s and 5s. Also my parents have refused to help me financially in University because “just drop out at 16, like I did”. So everything I’m doing might all be for nothing because I might never achieve my dream. But I’m not allowed to talk about any of it though.

Your family thinks its your responsibility to take care of your Mom vs your brother bc of sexist ideals pushed on us by the patriarchy. Its not your job to play care taker to your Mom and sister. Its really messed up your family does that to you. But you'll be out of there before you know it. These years may feel like they drag on forever but as someone who went thru a similar situation in my teens; it does get better. I know that doesnt mean much at the moment to you, but it really really does. Dont let your family pull you down & cut your wings before you even get a chance to fly. Just focus on school & maybe helping where you can. Try not to overwork yourself. And when you get into college (& you will! I totally believe in u) you can move out & you can be as selfish as you deserve. Selfishness isnt always a bad thing. People can purposefully or inadvertently take advantage of those of us who have a big heart & are selfless to a fault. I'm so sorry you have to go thru it all right now but I swear to you in 5yrs you will look back & be so glad you stayed around to see what the future has to offer you. 🧡
