The Toyota 3SGE and 3SGTE have finally hit Iconic Engines. The 3SGE and 3SGTE are probably the engines that I got most requests to do. So here they are, as the fifth episode of Iconic engines.
I think that the 3SGE and 3SGTE engines may be Toyota's best four cylinder, perhaps even best engine altogether. Now before ya'll 2jz people flame me, watch the video and see what makes these engines so great. The 3sge and 3sgte started in 1984. It was a different time back then, a different economy. Toyota had set it's sights on showing the world what it can do by over-engineering everything it could. Toyota also needed a new large flagship four cylinder engine (the 2.0 liter 18R-G was very much outdated by 1984). The 3sgte and 3sge engines were born lucky. It was the right time, Toyota had the right vision, needed a new 2.0 liter four cylinder flagship and the Japan 80s bubble was in full swing.
Both the naturally aspirated and turbo version of the 3s engines as found in the MR2 mk2 sw20 and Celica GT-four gt4, among other cars, gave automotive enthusiasts access to lightweight compact power-plants that made good power, could be tuned to make even more and were reliable. Although the 3sgte and 3sge did something amazing for car fans and drivers, they did something far more amazing for Toyota when it comes to motor sport. The 3sgte is by far Toyota's most successful racing engine and here's the evidence to prove it.
1. Tom's Castrol Supra
They removed a 2jz so they could fit a 3sgte into a Supra. That Supra with an inline four than beats inline six RB powered Nissan Skyline GTR cars in the All Japan Grant Touring Car Championship (JGTCC, today known as Super GT) Enough said.
2. WRC ST185 Celica GT Four
The ST185 Celica GT4 is Toyota's most successful rally car ever. But that's not important. What's important is that it was the first AWD Turbo Japanese car that won titles and trophies in the WRC and disrupted the dominance of European brands. By the time Subaru and Mitsubishi came to kick ass in the WRC, "Celica wuz here" was written on the track.
3. Eagle MKIII
The Eagle MKIII was Dan Gurney's All American Racers race car. It was powered by a 800 hp heavily tuned 3SGTE. The block was off the shelf OEM block. The Eagle MKIII won 21 out of 27 races and was so good that the racing class it was created for had to be abolished because of it.
4. Still not convinced. What about Rod Millen's "Celica"? (Not a real Celica, just a tubular chassis monster). But it was powered by another crazily tuned 3sgte, with 888hp in a car that weighed 880 kg. Rod Millen, this car, and its 3sgte will remain as the eternal champions of the all dirt version of Pikes Peak (the REAL Pikes Peak), because Rod Millen's 10:04:06 from 1994 was only beaten 13 years later, when 46% of Pikes Peak had already been paved.
When it comes to the specs the 3SGE and 3SGTE use a simple proven design for engine performance and reliability. These square engines employ a cast iron block with a forged steel fully counter-weighted crankshaft that spins on five main bearings. The rods and pistons are cast but a very good design. We have a DOHC alloy cylinder head with both cam gears spun by a rubber timing belt. We have 16 valves and a pent roof combustion chamber design with good squish areas. The 3sge and 3sgte engines were on the market for 23 years and during that time they significantly evolved. The 3sge started with a modest 135 horsepower but ended with a very respectable 210 horsepower in the gen 5 3sge blacktop beams. The 3sgte started with 185 horsepower and ended up with 260 horsepower in the gen 4 and gen 4 3sgte Toyota Caldina.
When it comes to tuning, the motor-sport heritage of the 3s engines shows you that they have amazing potential. However 3sge stage 1 stuff like intake, headers and cams won't yield desired results until a standalone ECU is thrown into the mix. Big naturally aspirated power will come at a cost and will require custom internals, crazy cams and serious tuning experience. But fear not, there's a super quick path to crazy fun by swapping a redtop or blacktop beams into an older Toyota chassis (ae86, aw11, ke70, kp61, ta22).
When it comes to the Turbo 3SGTE bigger power is naturally achieved more easily. The stock 3sgte internals are usually tuned to around 400 horsepower relatively safely and reliable. Big turbo 3sgte power will require forged rods and pistons, giant turbos and similar upgrades, but the 3sgte stock block and crank have seen beyond 1000 hp without much issues.

They got ban with the celica for having an over sized turbo ......that’s why Toyota didn’t make a full works rally car again till the yarris
epic projects chris The turbo was not oversized, they came back with a Corolla a year later and raced for three more seasons until 1999.
Would you consider doing a video on the North American 1.4 Multiair which is used in the Fiat 500 and 124 Abarths, as well as the Jeep Renegade?
M156, first AMG engine that wasn't based on a mercedes block. I have it in my S63 naturally aspirated and I love it!! . I believe the M159 version of this block used in the SLSv is still the most powerful V8 engine in a production car.
Can you please give us you opinion about the 3t-gte engine?
I *finally* got my Altezza RS200 with the Beams 3SGE and I cannot say enough how enamored I am with the engine in the car. It pulls hard to its 8k redline, without running out of breath. Yamaha and Toyota are a match made in engineering heaven.
You lucky F'er. How much $$'s did you wind up forking out for that engine? I'd love to get that setup for my SW20 but pretty sure I wouldn't be able to afford it right now.
@@mrt2this607 I bought it from a kid here in Okinawa for $9.5k, it had 72k KMs and bone stock. The Red Top 3SGE is a good engine for the SW20, as it was designed for the FWD transaxle or mid-ship layout. They usually cost less than the blacktops as well
That's nice to hear. My 75 Cilica can no longer be rebuilt. Parts for the 20R blocks are now non-existent. Found a 3s GE beams Blacktop with tranny from JDM $1700. I'm here because I didn't know what it was. Now I know, it will soon be mine.
@@Ozarkprepper643 you would likely have to search the world over in Japan to find someone with a stash of OEM parts for the stock engine. I think the 3SGE will work well :)
Im currently working on my altezza and you can reakly tell the engine is made for motorsport!
When a German need to speak English to gospel about a Japanese engine you better take it seriously
Break down cultural boundaries, talk about engines!
The Japanese and Germans are cooperating again

@@walangchahangyelingden8252 Amen to that! Preach it brother!
Resently took delivery of my GR Yaris rally, this little car is just amazing in everything it does, TOYOTA motorsport spirit is back
this was so good thanks for making the video. but there is a few facts missing, 1 the race cars shown don't use a "3sgte" its the 503E which the 3sgte is based on (503e existed before it), 2 the biggest missed fact of toda racing built 3sge (gen 1) for japans formula 3 and were fantastic making insane na power for the time (1980's) 3 the gen 2/3 3sgte blocking cracking is also around the water pump and between cylinders 2 and 3. this was due to casting movements and affects random blocks some will crack with 300hp some not til 1000+hp just depends on the block. 4 within the mr2 community they is now many reliable, solid builds using the stock gen 4 3sgte making 400whp with no troubles at all but they are some thin connecting rods. 5 the main down fall of the 3s and 5sfe is oiling, specifically the oil pump. it is a little undersized and is prone to damage from contamination, less oil pumped, no oil pressure, spun bearings. but this is fix with a 98+ camry oil pump or gen 4/5 3sgte one
Yep be lost me a bit after mixing up the 503e. Dont try and make 800 hp on the stock block!!!. I have a gen 3 motor in my 185 and all though people do upgrade the oil pumps on high hp builds I wouldnt call it the main failure, I very rarely hear of oil pump issues. Cracked blocks at 400hp + yes definitely, not so much pumps. Much of oil starvation pre gen 3 has been attributed to poor sump baffling.
came here to mention the 503E. Nice.
I'm not arguing or anything so don't jump down my throat, what's the second fact he's missing? That Toda racing used 3sge's for formula 3? Is that really an important missing fact? Does he need to mention everywhere this engine was ever used? I'm sure you'll be able to convince me I'm just asking.
The late gen 3 blocks were revised (97 or 98+), had a reinforced waterpump area, and Toyota used better castings. These are equivalent in strength to the gen 4 blocks.
www.dailysportscar.com/2017/10/27/the-legend-of-the-castrol-toms-supra.html There are the facts!! The Castrol TOM’s Yoyota Supra GT, with a 3SGTE swap!!
More people should give this engine some serious love here in the states. This engine (fitted in a MR2) is what turned me from a v8's ONLY mindset to a true car enthusiast!!! In stock form it was EXTREMELY entertaining! Respect and thank you for bringing info to the people!
I have one sitting in my garage right now
@@KZheadforcedmetochangemyname meee too :D m1.5 ftw
Agreed! These engines are taken for granted here in the states. I get Honda are great engines as well but it’s all too common for me even when I was a teenager. Only owned 1 Honda Civic. Everyone in my high school had one back in 2004. I stuck to Toyota and doing unique things.
I like the 3sgte for its reliable power output and small size giving it the option to fit in many chassis and also gives weight advantages like when they swapped the supra with it. The 3sge is also very nice of an engine and has lots of potential even in the heavy toyota altezza it still performs well. I think an engine you should cover next is the barra 4.0l I6 a mix of US and Australian goodies
I like it in old model rav4
3S-GTE is a damn good engine. I had 2 (1990) ST185s. Bore & stroke aside, I like that it has brass oil jets which shoot oil vertically underneath the piston crowns for increased cooling.
People keep sleeping on 3sgte . This my favorite 4cylinder engine . It’s like a 2jz but 2 cylinders less . They also share same sensors and the design is almost the same
Problems is not like the 2jz. They have block casting issues. They like crack between cylinders 2 and 3. They are good for 300-400 whp but you start pushing them to over 500 whp plus they will crack the cylinder wall. That’s why they use 5sfe block on big builds.
I own both a 1jzGTE and a 3sGE, so often when working on both I forget I'm working on different engines
josh vega As usual, that’s a rumor that is greatly exaggerated. There were a few early third gens that did that. You almost never actually see that. 800whp is not uncommon.
Yep! Same Bore and Stroke too!
People sleep on the 2rz truck engine as well, whew.
I love the 3SGTE in my MR2 Turbo. I've had it for over 30 years and it's been very reliable, however it's so hard to find OEM parts now. It's not as quick as modern sports cars, but who cares, the little Toyota is fun, reliable, and makes great sounds. I really enjoy driving it. And thanks for the informative video, I learned a lot.
How about 3sgte 5th gen on Toyota caldina gt4 ? Is it more powerful than the last gen 3sgte ?
if for whatever reason you started to care, your engine is the first and last look you need to make. tear it apart and make double the stock power reliably and continue slaying newer bulkier cars with the same or more power and hurt tik toker's brocoli haired feelings.
I have a Gen3 Mr2 Turbo with a bit tuning and it make now a bit over 300hp and even today it is a fast car, 100-200km/h in about 11 sec and 0-100 km/h in under 5 sec.
I have 5sfe. Not sure if i should 5sgte, k24, or 2gr it haha
giving 4 bangers some love
I've got the 1990 celica gt4 imported from japan to here in australia. Just done a total rebuild with strengthened internals, now saving again to buy supporting parts. ( pretty much everything) The goal is about 400-450 hp. Already upgraded the brakes, suspention is next.
Nice series. One correction: TVIS (and the tuned duel plenum of the 3SGE) has nothing to do with valve timing; both impact air flow through the intake and head only to increase torque at low RPM.
Correct and Yamaha did a magnificent job of creating a near perfect flow rate on these heads with that plenum and exhaust system.
Yes, it was on my 4A-GE with fixed timing (1985).
This is a channel making series, keep it up, I've learned so much about engines I love thanks to the few videos of this series you made, it helps that it's not done in a boring way and very in-depth. Congrats on the AEM sponsoring by the way!
I own 3s since 10 years, and this one of the most complete info videos about 3S engines. my respect and greetings from Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo!
You make an excellent point about the NA engine with ecu. I make wire harnesses and tuning solutions for a living with a lot of BEAMS customers. It's not uncommon to see +30-40HP with an ecu and good tune. In a small car it's quite adequate.
Glad I bought a 91 MR2 Turbo a few years ago when they were still kind of cheap. The value appreciation on these machines is crazy! I'd pay thousands more for the same car today!
Really enjoying this channel, genuinely shocked at the lack of subscribers! As a mechanic and a petrol/diesel head it’s incredibly informative and funny!
I'm pretty sure that the 503E engine, which was in the cars like the Eagle Talon mk3, was the basis of the 3S engine. Being a race engine, many materials were exotic, such as the block, which was a special iron that isn't the same as the typical cast iron you see in the vast majority of engines. The cylinder heads are also completely unique, due to the differences in water jackets and cooling between the 503E and the 3S-GTE. They are directly related however!
Hey, this is a fantastic video man, I really enjoyed it, I have owned my celica gt4 wrc (with non active antilag, spray bar ect..) for a year now and it still makes me as happy as the first time driving it, I'm not a wizard with the mechanics so I cant give input on this but I want to learn as much as I can and this video is some real motivation to go about doing so, thank you and keep up the good work
Most cars with a turbo: BRAAAA *woosh* 800hp turbocharged 3S-GTE: BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *STUTUTUTUTUTUTUTU*
That has nothing to do with the car lol you’ve just described the difference between having a blow off valve and not having one 😂
@@stefan_4508 well for whatever reason, they all seem to sound just the way DIgBigger188 pronounce it with the STUTUTUTUTUT.
@@stefan_4508 bro you’re dumb that is just surge anti surge housings are what help mitigate surge.

I Just found your channel and I'm loving the iconic engine series, great stuff keep it up 👌
I removed the 4AGE from my AW11. What replaced it? 3SGE (Gen1). It is absolutely bonkers to drive! The throttle response is instant and the power does not taper off, even when you're screaming near the 7200rpm redline! There is no other engine/setup that I could ever imagine/want in my AW11.
This is a fantastic video and you clearly demonstrate you know your stuff. All the guides on my favourite MR2 board back in the day said 300bhp was the safe point for stock internals before spending the big money. A thing you alluded to that will always be my favourite thing about the MR2 and it's 3s-ge is the reliability. I honestly thrashed the living crap out of my mr2. I bounced it off the rev limiter daily and it never missed a beat. Fantastic sound for a four cylinder and the way the power built over the rev range encouraged you to chase the 7250rpm limit. Absolute diamond of an engine and a car. Thanks for the video. Luv and Peace.
Finally! Someone showing love for the greatest 4cyl of all time Easily the best video I’ve ever seen on the 3S-GTE engine. Thank you very much.
I love my 3S engines! I've got a 1989 Celica GT-Four that I've just bought a Caldina 3SGTE for, and I'm slowly building a 5SGTE for my 1984 Celica. You should make a video about the 1UZ at some point, they're a really under-appreciated engine! I put one in my Cresta instead of the 1/2JZ that everyone else runs and I love it, so now I'm putting one in my 1977 Celica too and boosting it. Toyota FTW
You are living my dream... I have a 1991 Celica that I'm just now going to build, It has a 5sfe I'm planning on doing a 3sge swap this year it's my first project car do you have any advice?
@@marcostorres1053 buy the repair manual for your car and for the car your donor engine came from. I can't recommend repair manuals enough, they make everything a lot easier and just reading them helps you understand how it all works.

Until this subject, i send you all my petrolhead energy to continue your amazing work !
Love this series! The ST165(1986-1989) was the first AWD Turbo 4cyl to win titles in the WRC. The 165 is the first iteration of the 3sgte, renowned for its incredible block. A 1sgt gen Block Frankenstined with a 185 or 205 head and later model turbo setups is an ironclad street and strip monster. My 1sgt gen GTE has been running on its original rebuilt using other gen parts and a JDM GRP A trans for almost 10 years and reliably makes close to 350 at the wheels. Gas Mileage is shitty but I didn’t build it as a commuter. Find some of the older Gt-Four and home built Gt2’s out there from the early 2000’s and ask them what they ran back then. Later model heads and turbo parts. 1st gen Blocks. Solid and proven combo. Keep doing this series its badass!
i have a gen 1 on my ae92. upgraded turbos and internals. honda dizzy and box. solid af to drive
This is one of the best KZhead videos I have seen in a while
Absolutely amazing information, i have a 3sgte engine I'm currently building into a monster and its such an underrated platform.
100 hp per cylinder is astounding... 200 + hp per cylinder is insane. I do love this channel.
Finally!!! I was waiting for this. You didn't talk about putting a turbo on a 3sge beams. Beams+turbo is going to be something
yeah i was wondering about this, am interested in buying an altezza and boosting it in the future. seen a lot of threads with mixed messages about that
Toyota Caldina GT-FOUR Station Wagon (Gen 4 3S-GTE) 2002-2007 - Amazing all round car, practical. Has the 90s 4WD turbo cred and feeling but rock solid Toyota mid-2000's reliability. Real shame Toyota did not make a successor.
Man, my parents had an '85 Camry. Never realized growing up that it might have had one of the first 3S engines ever. My first car was a 1988 celica all-trac. Cool car, classic old-school turbocharged feeling.
I'm planning on building a cheap 5S-FE right now, and I'm loving the simplicity of this engine. There's a boatload of them out in junkyards and upgrades have gotten more accessible over the years. I'm so excited to get refresh this little engine and make some power
I own 2 st165 celica all tracs I’m bringing back from the grave. Not easy, definetly not cheap, but so worth it. There is a good aftermarket for 3sgte still. Look at quaiffes atb center differential. Cool stuff. Can make these cars very fast and reliable with right parts. OG Jdm turbo awd ftw
Very informative! I plan on swapping a 3SGE into my '85 Pickup, so there's lots of interesting information here. As for iconic American engines? You don't get more iconic than the 454 big block Chevy and it's small block brother, the 350. The LS series engines are more common, but in terms of engines that make up a huge part of car culture history in America, it's predecessors take the cake. Decades of racers used Chevy engines in classic hot rods, drag cars, street cars, low riders, and everything else you can imagine.

@@d4a I 100% agree! Even the rap is getting better. Thanks for the huge tip about how the 3S-GTE gen 3 is probably the best gen for squeezing big power. However, could you elaborate on what you meant by an engine that makes the majority of its power in the high rev zone is probably not the best for a daily driver?
@@FumanShu8 I was referring to a heavily tuned naturally aspirated 3sge. To get big NA power you need to make the engine rev very high and high powered NA four cylinders usually have a weak bottom end of the power curve and poor idle and are very loud as a consequence. This makes it kinda crappy around town. But I'm really speaking about heavily tuned naturally aspirated engines around the 300hp+ mark as you can see in the video. These engines often aren't even road legal anymore in many parts of the world.
@@d4a I actually love my BEAMS blacktop I have in my RN30, I'm pulling just a hair under 300whp, straight piped and pisses everyone off but it's a blast to drive around the city, also lucky enough to be legal because of the age of the car it's in. being a 1983, I don't have any type of inspection.
Great video. Thought Toyota lied about power, at least on the gen3 MR2 turbos. Mine came across with about 30k miles on the clock and got serviced then dyno'd completely stock making 280bhp at the crank. Simple mods and upping the boost got that over 300 safely and I ran it up to about 108k miles for 7 years before selling on.

Love this series!
gen 5fs came in the camry 2.2 and in the rav4 of the same gen making the hybrid 5fs with 3s head is a monster
F series head engines where almost always the non-performance engines in toyota's line up they almost always have low power numbers and not very much in technology nor excitement in the engine design, so i think most F series head engine's wont come up in the iconic engine series. But yeah I agree the 5sfe block with 3sgte head should have been brought up which has been given the name 5sgte a stroker engine made with toyota parts just like the 7age. ATS racing also has a 2.3 liter kit for this frankenstein engine kinda like mrp's 9age kit. Maybe there could be a 3s revision or part 2 video. :D
If you want a suggestion on european engine : check peugeot's TU ( TU 24, TU 5JP4) and XU engines ( 205 gti, 306 s16, 405 mi16 etc) familys
My suggestion for an european engine: VAG AEB 1.8T but be aware its most likely that Volkswagen asked Toyota how to build this 20V turbocharged fourcylinder inline engine since Toyota had the same technology years in advance. The AEB is an engine with good availability nowadays and it can reach 350hp with mild tuning and up to 1000hp with major tuning. Thumbs up for the iconic rap.
On a second thought there is nothing iconic about the AEB. The original Audi Quattro engines seem more likely to fit to your series of iconic engines. Namely the WR or its beefier brother RR. Inline five cylinder engines with 2144ccm displacement from the mid 80s.
VW KR, PL and PG engines. PL is the original 1.8 16V, the KR is the electronic injection (Bosch K or L-Jetronic) version of the 1.8 16V and the PG is the 1.8 8V G-lader engine. All of them have the same block, in fact even the 20V engines all still use that same block.
love these videos...please consider doing a vtec engine vid and a nissan sr20/sr20ve vvl
Joshua Madurai Dude gets a Hard on with Toyota.
Got the 3SGE in my 86 Celica GTS and love it! Had the car 14 years. Plan to swap in a Beams red top when it finally dies
Put a 5th gen blacktop in it mate. Got one in my SXE10 Altezza, epic engine for NA and it's not a vtec either!
@@kiwidiesel5071 better off sticking with the redtop, the improvement of the blacktop isn't worth the extra hassle when doing the conversion into FWD/4WD applications
I recently found your channel. My first video of yours was the Iconic Engines L24/26/28 video, which is absolutely great. Didn‘t know they were that good of an engine series. I‘m also in the market for an MR2 W2 - and there is the matching video. This one is great too and I subbed after the first one already. Tho I‘m probably swapping the MR2 for a 3 Liter V6 (sooomeday), because V6. 🤔 You didn‘t touch on the fact that the 156hp MR2 3SGE engine liked to burn up to 1 Liter of oil every 1000km. Keep it up man, love these videos!
Thats false
Wow! This was a really great video. I feel like I learned so much! I am interested in swapping a 3SGE or 3SGTE into my Celica and this info was really helpful. Kudos!
Eyyy.
WOW Love To SEE LADIES With GREAT CAR INTEREST ,THUMBS Up
I’m actually curious of the deference’s between the 3S-GE and the 5S-GE, I would love to know their strengths .
no such thing as a 5SGE apart from a hybrid made from a 3sge head on a 5S block...
The 5S(FE) is a 2.2L version but the head design is build for economy and they are bullet proof, not powerful but a great taxi engine. The 3SGT head can I believe go on a 5SFE Block making it basically a stroked 3SGT (so I believe, but I could be wrong).
Very different kind of engines but definitely need to do the good old Land Cruiser engines, the F, 2F, 3F engines and the 1FZ successor.
Great video! I have a usdm 94 MR2 with a 5th gen 3sgte. The boost is set to around 17psi and did 340whp on the dyno. Super fun car to drive!
caldina engine swap?
Just bought a 99 altezza with beams dual vvt-i as my first car. Loving it
Bmw made some good engines :) The m50b25 for example is a very common high horsepower turbo swap! Or possibly the good old s14b25 from the old e30 m3? Would be great to see! Loving your Videos, just found out about them a few weeks back. Keep it up!
Quite a few s14 suggestions coming up. I do like that thing too :)
Bro big up from jamaica.u just saying music toy hears at my brand toyotas..toyota king of the autos...👑👑👍👍👍👍👍
Fi real bredda straight outta Jamaica...one a dem engine ya me a pree fi put inna my ae 111
Two Way Twin Scroll, BEAMS, TVIS. I loved the abbreviations on the JDM engines when I was a small kid.
Im so glad I found your channel
Brilliant video, very interesting even for the likes of me who is 3sgte mad. Thank you!
Omg I learned so much from this video it not even funny 💯💯💯💯 so here it is: Gen four 3sgt with with 3rd gen internal and big turbo, AEM 2 brains stop tech brakes in the rear with some slics and a tune done ✅
I had a stage 2 mr2 turbo back in the day, the turbo was huge and took a little bit of spooling up but when it did it was some boost and it sounded great just behind my head
I just bought a 3s motor today. I had no idea about the racing history behind it. I'm excited to build it
I got confused as well if you didnt tell me the Toms Supra had a 3S-GTE. How dumb of me. Its a shame the 3S didnt really have a true sporty successor other than a Supercharged AZ engine. And the latest AR engine are found in boring SUV/CUV and boring Luxury saloons. I will always think the 3S GTE is like the Mitsubishi 4G63 engine since they both have a long production run of the engine. Both cast iron bottom. Used in many applications and both have slight improvement to the engine over the years. Not only the 3S GTE is swapped to AW11 MR2. It common to see NA to Turbo swaps of the SW20. And some RAV4 getting the full AWD swap with the 3S-GTE for that sleeper SUV look. Not a common mod but still possible. Some company did try to turbo the 3S BEAMS engine. Someone did swap the 3S BEAMS turbo into a Toyota FR-S. With low boost got 330whp on 93 Octane. Standalone ECU and E85 tuning will be the way to extract out tons of power from both NA 3S and 3S Turbo engine. Bad tune and you will expect a blown engine be it fully built or billet block. Good series. Keep it up :)
Also Mandalay from Australia had a Rotrex Centrifugal Supercharged BEAMS MR2...I heard he was making figures above 600bhp. I remember hearing about him selling it a few years back, if you search it you should be able to still find something about.
Very difficult and expensive to generate big horsepower from NA engines without alot of work when compared to turbo engines. E85 is garbage , thankfully here in New Zealand we have 98 octane at the pump which my 5th and last gen 3sge just loves to drink. Thanks to Yamaha I get titanium valves and a head that is flowed to as near perfect as is possible for NA engine.
So you're saying the engine I have in my garage is a bad ass engine
No bro, it's shit but don't worry I'll take that piece of shit out of your hands so you can clear space for a better one
@@jaydeleon695 lol it's in Arizona now gave it to my kid or I would say come get it
Thanks for yet another informative automotive lesson, Shaggy!
Thank you for the thorough history of these engines. I always new they were great, I just didn't know they were that great. I own a 92 MRT2 with the 3SGTE engine in it. Made a few mods to it which boosted the HP up a couple hundred. Also controlled by an AEM stand alone. Really fun car to drive; not fun to wok on....tight engine bay. None the less, I love it. Keep up the good work. Your content is very detailed and thorough.....Thanks
Try removing the bootlid fully from the car and you can sit in the boot and work on the engine with ease.
just give the man his sub.
I love my mildly modded 3SGTE. It still has the ability to shame many a modern car! Great video, thanks 👍 Has to be 1J, 2J, RB26 or K20 next. I know they aren't euro or us but they are way cooler! 😉
Me too! I have a JDM Celica GT4 ST205. All you really need to do is let them breath and its a serious upgrade. Decent filter, decat and exhaust is all you really need. The stage 1 upgrade on the turbo really helped too, hits 12psi at 3100 rev's now. Being a bit neglected right now as I bought the new Supra back in September.
@@webweasel4401 absolutely. Only other thing I'd add is an ebc to up the boost slightly. Sounds like you have a great motor there. I'm on the fence with the mk5 though, struggling with the BMW thing. 😉
@@davidagcole Try one on a test drive. And don't forget that collab's are normal in the industry. The 3S the 2J engines were Yamaha designs.
:15 amazing editing. I loved this
After watching the vids on the all the Toyota engines I have concluded they are all fabulous.
